Claude Code learns to run on a schedule — Routines arrive with a redesigned desktop app

On 14 April Anthropic shipped two Claude Code updates: Routines — a configured task that runs on a schedule, via the API, or when an event fires — and a redesigned desktop app built to run more Claude Code tasks at once.

What changed

Until now, Claude Code worked while you watched. Routines break that tether: the nightly dependency audit, the Monday-morning test sweep, the lint-and-tidy pass after every release — configured once, run unattended. Combined with the desktop redesign's parallel tasks, the shape of the product shifts from "an agent you supervise" toward "a small team you brief."

What it means for Australians

The time-zone arithmetic is quietly excellent for Australian developers. A routine scheduled for 3am AEST runs while you sleep and lands results before stand-up — and US-hours service load is at its lowest exactly when Australian overnight routines would fire. Unattended runs do shift the discipline, though: a task that executes without you watching deserves tighter scoping than one you can interrupt. Start routines on read-only work — audits, reports, reviews — before letting them touch code unattended, and keep the output in a branch a human merges.

For the small Australian software teams in our audience, the practical unlock is paying for judgement once and running it nightly. The same caveats as ever: bills in USD, processing offshore, and an agent with repository access is a security decision before it's a productivity one.

What we're watching

What unattended routines do to usage quotas in practice — scheduled work burns allowance whether or not you're at the desk — and how this lands against the rest of the agentic-coding field, which is moving the same direction fast.
