ChatGPT Images 2.0: the text in your AI images finally says what you typed

On 21 April OpenAI launched ChatGPT Images 2.0, built on a new model called gpt-image-2. It becomes the default image generator on every ChatGPT tier, free included.

What changed

Three things, in order of how much they'll matter to you. Text rendering is dramatically better — the perennial embarrassment of AI images, where your sale poster reads "SAEL 50% OPH", is now mostly fixed. Generation is roughly four times faster, which changes how the feature feels: iteration instead of a coffee break. And the model brings multilingual support and stronger visual reasoning — it follows layout instructions ("logo top-left, phone number along the bottom") with far less fighting.

What it means for Australians

For the small businesses in our audience, legible text is the whole story. The most common real-world use of AI images here isn't art — it's the Instagram tile, the market-stall sign, the EOFY-sale banner. Those all need words, and words were the thing AI images couldn't do. A free-tier tool that renders clean text in Australian English removes the main reason to pay a designer for throwaway promotional graphics — or to pay for a separate image tool at all.

Two caveats. Free and Go tier users in Australia have seen sponsored content in ChatGPT since late March, and that context doesn't change here. And as always with generated imagery for commercial use: check what you're putting your brand on — speed makes it easier to publish something you didn't look at properly.

What we're watching

How gpt-image-2 stacks up against the dedicated image tools on quality, and whether "good enough, free, and built into the assistant you already use" hollows out the paid image-generation category for everyday business use. That's a question for our Image Generation reviews to settle.
