Midjourney vs Ideogram for Australians 2026 — which image generator wins?
No single winner. The right choice depends on the job; the verdict below says who should buy which.
Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).
Editor's note: Every pricing and feature claim below is anchored to our full Midjourney and Ideogram reviews (both reviewed 2 June 2026). AUD figures use the editorial standard exchange rate of US$1 ≈ A$1.40 and assume ~10% GST added at checkout for Australian accounts. Neither vendor publishes AUD prices, so treat the AUD figures as estimates, not invoices.
These two tools get lumped together as "AI image generators," and that label hides the only thing that matters: they do opposite jobs well. Midjourney makes the most beautiful pictures you can buy. Ideogram is the one that can write words inside a picture without turning them into gibberish. Ask either to do the other's job and you'll be disappointed.
Both score the same on our framework — 16/25, ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good — and both score badly on Australian fit for the same reasons: USD-only pricing, no local data residency, no published compliance, no AU support, and a public-by-default privacy posture that catches people out. So the question isn't "which is better." It's "which is better for the picture you're actually trying to make." Here's the honest head-to-head.

What both tools do
Both are text-to-image generators: you type a description, optionally feed reference images, and get back a set of pictures you refine. Both run as web apps with mobile access, both have matured well past the "roll the dice on a prompt" stage, and both ship fast.
Both also give you real production controls rather than just a prompt box. Midjourney has Omni Reference (carry a consistent character across images), style references, mood boards and a personalisation profile. Ideogram has Canvas (an infinite board), Magic Fill (inpainting), Extend (outpainting), Style and Character References, and Batch Generation from a CSV on its higher tiers. Both let you lock a consistent look across a set of images, which is what turns either into something you can do client work with.
And both share the same Australian weak spots, which is why neither cracks four stars. USD-only billing, no AUD displayed anywhere, no advertised data residency, no published SOC 2 / ISO 27001 / IRAP certification, and support that's docs-and-community only with no AU hours. On both, your generations are public by default and your inputs may be used to train the model. That last point is the one most likely to bite an Australian business, and we'll come back to it.
Pricing in Australia — the real numbers
Neither tool prices in AUD. The figure that lands on your card depends on your bank's FX rate plus GST added at checkout under Australia's imported-digital-services rules. Here's the all-in AUD estimate at the editorial standard rate.
| Plan | Midjourney (AUD est. inc. ~10% GST) | Ideogram (AUD est. inc. ~10% GST) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | None | $0 — 10 slow credits/week, public, undeletable |
| Entry paid | ~A$14/mo (Basic, USD$10) | ~A$28/mo (Plus, USD$20) |
| Sweet spot | ~A$42/mo (Standard, USD$30) | ~A$28/mo (Plus, USD$20) |
| Power tier | ~A$84/mo (Pro, USD$60) | ~A$84/mo (Pro, USD$60) |
| Top tier | ~A$168/mo (Mega, USD$120) | ~A$42/mo per seat (Team, USD$30, min 2) |
Sources: our Midjourney review and Ideogram review. Both vendors offer roughly 20% off on annual billing. Re-checked against each vendor's live plans 18 June 2026 — figures unchanged. Confirm the GST line on your first invoice and check it's a compliant tax invoice for your accountant; neither vendor publishes AU-specific GST guidance.
The pricing takeaway: they're closer than they look, but the shape is different. Midjourney has no free tier and no AUD pricing, so you can't try it without paying — and the metered "Fast GPU hours" model means light users on the cheap Basic plan hit the meter fast. The plan that makes sense for most serious users is Standard at about A$42/month, where unlimited Relax mode lets you stop counting generations.
Ideogram is cheaper to get serious on: Plus at about A$28/month is the tier most Australians should buy, and it's the same plan that unlocks private generation and the editing tools. But read Ideogram's credit meter carefully — monthly priority credits expire each cycle, and the advertised "up to X images" counts are calculated on the cheapest old model. On the newest 3.0 model at Quality, you get far fewer images than the marketing implies.
One catch sits on each side. On Midjourney, privacy costs an extra step up to Pro (~A$84/month) — that's a A$50/month premium over Standard purely to keep your work off the public gallery. On Ideogram, the Free plan is a trap for business use: everything you make is public and can't be deleted, so the real entry point for any client work is Plus.
Where Midjourney wins
Image quality, full stop. This is the whole reason to choose Midjourney. Its V7 model — and the newer V8.1, released 30 April 2026 with HD 2K output — produce the most aesthetically polished stills of any consumer generator in 2026. If the look of the picture is the point, nothing in this category matches it out of the box. Ideogram's 3.0 is strong and handles photorealism well, but on pure art-directed aesthetics Midjourney is the benchmark.
Text-free artistic and photographic work. Concept art, mood boards, album and book covers, marketing imagery where the visual carries the message — this is Midjourney's home ground. Our Ideogram review says as much outright: for text-free art and photography, Midjourney is the stronger tool.
One subscription covers video. Midjourney's V1 Video model animates a still into short clips, starting at five seconds and extending to around 21. It's an add-on to the still-image core, not a standalone editor, but it means a single plan spans image and basic motion. Ideogram has no video.
Unlimited Relax mode from Standard up. Above Basic, you can generate without watching the Fast-hours meter — slower and queued, but uncapped. For iterative creative work, that changes the experience.
The honest cost of all this is a real learning curve. Midjourney rewards people who learn its prompt language; a first-timer gets pretty pictures, a fluent user gets exactly the picture they pictured. It's closer to a camera than a vending machine.
Where Ideogram wins
Text inside images — and it isn't close. This is the one job Midjourney can't do. Ask most image models for "a vintage travel poster that says VISIT TASMANIA in bold serif lettering" and you get a beautiful poster with mangled, dreamlike text. Ask Ideogram and the words come out crisp, correctly spelled and styled to match. Our Midjourney review flags weak text rendering as a standing limitation; Ideogram was built by ex-Google Brain researchers specifically to solve it. If your image has words on it — a menu board, a "Just Listed" tile, an event poster, a logo concept, a book cover — Ideogram is the tool.
Genuine editing, not just generation. Magic Fill (select a region and replace an object or fix a detail) and Extend (grow an image beyond its frame) mean you can edit and compose, not just re-roll a prompt. Midjourney's controls are strong for art direction, but Ideogram's inpainting/outpainting toolkit is the more complete production environment for graphic work.
Unrestricted commercial rights on every tier — including Free. Ideogram states it doesn't restrict your rights in your output on any plan. Midjourney allows commercial use on paid plans, but any company grossing more than USD$1M a year must hold a Pro or Mega plan before it can use a single image commercially. For a growing Australian small business, Ideogram removes a licensing headache Midjourney imposes.
Cheaper to get private and productive. Ideogram's Plus unlocks private generation and the full editing kit at about A$28/month. The equivalent privacy on Midjourney (Stealth Mode) only arrives at Pro, around A$84/month.
The trade-off: Ideogram does one thing brilliantly rather than everything adequately. If your work has no text and you already own Canva or Adobe, you may not need it at all.
Australian fit
Neither tool is built for Australians, and our scores say so: Midjourney 1/5, Ideogram 2/5 on Australian Fit. Both are USD-only with GST added at checkout, both are US-based with no advertised data residency, neither publishes SOC 2 / ISO 27001 / IRAP certification, and both offer docs-and-Discord support with no AU office or hours.
Ideogram edges ahead for one concrete reason: unrestricted commercial usage rights on every tier, which removes a real licensing question for a small business. Midjourney sits at the bottom of the category — no free tier, USD-only, paywalled privacy, the >USD$1M revenue rule, and, importantly, no IP indemnity: its Terms of Service disclaim IP warranties, so if an output triggers a copyright claim, you defend it yourself. Ideogram doesn't offer indemnity either, but it doesn't carry Midjourney's revenue gate or its higher cost-of-privacy.
The privacy default is the thing every Australian buyer must understand before signing up. On Midjourney, your prompts and images are public and may train the model unless you're on Pro/Mega with Stealth Mode enabled — and Stealth isn't retroactive. On Ideogram, generations are public by default and, on the Free plan, can't be deleted; private generation requires Plus or Pro. For client work, NDAs, or anything confidential, on either tool you must pay, and on Midjourney you must pay more.
The gate matters here. Under our Australian Fit gate, a tool needs Australian Fit of at least 4/5 to be a category Top Pick. Both tools fall well short — Midjourney at 1/5, Ideogram at 2/5 — so even though one of them is the clear capability winner for a given job, neither can be named the Image Generation category Top Pick on current Australian fit. They are tools we recommend for specific jobs, not the category champion.
Who should pick what
The right answer depends on the picture, not the brand.
If your image has words on it — menus, social tiles, posters, logos, book covers, event flyers — pick Ideogram, on the Plus plan at about A$28/month. Nothing else in the consumer field renders legible, correctly spelled, styled text reliably. This is a one-tool decision.
If you want the best-looking text-free visuals — concept art, photographic imagery, mood boards, album/book art — pick Midjourney, landing on Standard at about A$42/month once you're past learning the ropes. The aesthetic ceiling is the highest in the category.
If you also need short video from your stills — pick Midjourney. Its V1 Video model brings basic motion into the one subscription; Ideogram has no video at all.
If you're a small business that needs clean commercial rights and low cost — lean Ideogram. Unrestricted usage on every tier and private generation at A$34/month beat Midjourney's revenue gate and A$102/month price for privacy. Just don't use Ideogram's Free plan for anything you wouldn't publish.
If copyright exposure is a real risk for your business — neither is ideal, because neither offers IP indemnity. Our reviews point regulated or risk-averse buyers toward Adobe Firefly, which is trained on licensed content and backs commercial work with enterprise indemnity.
If you need Australian data residency or published compliance today — neither. Both are US-based with no advertised residency or certification. If that's a hard requirement, this isn't the category to shop in.
Our verdict
This isn't a tie, even though the scores are. Both land at 16/25 because they're excellent at one thing and weak on Australian fit — but they're excellent at opposite things, so for any given job there's a clear winner.
For text in images, Ideogram wins outright — it's the only tool here that does the job, it's cheaper to get private and productive, and it carries cleaner commercial rights. For everything else visual — pure image quality, art direction, photographic work, and video — Midjourney wins, and its quality is genuinely the best you can buy. If you do both kinds of work, the honest answer is that they're complementary, not competitive: Ideogram when the words matter, Midjourney when the picture does, roughly A$85/month all-in for both on their sweet-spot plans.
What neither earns is the category crown. With Australian Fit at 1/5 and 2/5, both fall under our Top Pick gate — strong tools for specific jobs, but not the tool we'd hand an Australian business as a safe default. Go in clear-eyed about the USD pricing, the public-by-default privacy, and the absent IP indemnity. We'd expect to refresh this comparison inside six months — both products ship fast, and pricing, privacy and commercial terms are the areas most likely to move.
A note on professional advice
This comparison is general information for Australian readers, not legal, financial, tax or HR advice. The IP-indemnity and commercial-usage points in particular turn on your specific circumstances and the vendors' current terms — confirm the live terms before you rely on them, and speak to a qualified professional (a lawyer for copyright or licensing exposure, your accountant for GST and deductibility) before making a business decision on either tool.
Update history
- 24 Sep 2026 — The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was. The header read “gross-up; GST unconfirmed” and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, 141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10. No figure changed here; only the description of them did. Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: gross-up names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and GST unconfirmed is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. No USD price moved and no score changed.

Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper for an Australian user?
Ideogram, to get serious. Its Plus plan (~A$28/month ex-GST, est.) gives you private generation and the editing tools, where the equivalent privacy on Midjourney only arrives at Pro (~A$84/month). Midjourney's Basic (~A$14/month) is cheaper on paper but has no private mode, no Relax mode, and a tight Fast-GPU-hour meter.
Can I use both?
Yes — and for a lot of creative work that's the sensible setup. Ideogram for anything with text, Midjourney for everything else visual plus short video. All-in roughly A$85/month with GST on their sweet-spot plans (Ideogram Plus + Midjourney Standard).
Will my work be public or train the model?
On both, yes, by default. Midjourney makes prompts and images public and may train on them unless you're on Pro/Mega with Stealth Mode on (and it isn't retroactive). Ideogram makes generations public by default and can't delete them on Free; private generation needs Plus or Pro, and its privacy policy says inputs may train its models. For confidential or client work, pay for the private tier on either.
Which is safer for commercial use?
Ideogram grants unrestricted commercial rights on every tier, including Free. Midjourney allows commercial use on paid plans, but companies grossing more than USD$1M a year must be on Pro or Mega first. Neither offers IP indemnity — if copyright exposure is a real concern, our reviews point you to Adobe Firefly instead.
Can I claim either as a business expense in Australia?
For tools used in producing assessable income, generally yes — but both bill in USD with GST at checkout. Check the tax invoice for the supplier's details and GST line, and talk to your accountant before treating it as deductible. This is general commentary, not tax advice.
How often will this comparison be updated?
Quarterly at minimum, and immediately on any material change to pricing, model lineup, privacy terms, or Australian availability for either tool. The "last reviewed" date at the top of the page is the source of truth.
