The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.
Skip to the verdictPricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).
Verdict (TL;DR): Metabase is the best business intelligence tool for Australian teams that have a developer or data analyst on staff and take data sovereignty seriously. The open-source version is free — you pay only for the AWS Sydney infrastructure that keeps your data inside Australia. If you don't have technical staff, look elsewhere.

What Metabase is
Metabase is an open-source business intelligence tool. It connects to your database — whether that's PostgreSQL, MySQL, a data warehouse, or a spreadsheet — and lets you build dashboards, run queries, and answer business questions without writing SQL. It was founded in 2014 and is headquartered in the United States.
The open-source version is free to download, self-host, and run forever. That is not a freemium bait-and-switch. The software itself costs nothing. You host it on your own infrastructure — which, for Australian businesses, means you can run it on AWS Sydney or Azure Australia and your data never leaves the country.
Metabase also offers a cloud-hosted version (Metabase Cloud), where Metabase manages the infrastructure. That version is simpler to set up but your data sits on Metabase-managed cloud infrastructure — regions include the US, Europe, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific. The specific region assigned to your instance needs to be confirmed with Metabase at sign-up; the default is US-based. For Australian businesses with customer data obligations under the Privacy Act, that distinction matters enormously.
In the Australian market, Metabase competes with Power BI (Microsoft), Looker Studio (Google), Tableau, and newer AI-native tools like Julius AI. Its defining edge is the combination of open-source pricing, self-hosting, and an increasingly capable AI query layer called Metabot.
What it costs in Australia
This is where Metabase earns its five on value for money. The self-hosted open-source version is genuinely free — no seat limits, no feature gating at the core level.
Self-hosted (Open Source)
| Plan | Software cost | Infrastructure cost (estimate) | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open Source | $0 | from roughly AUD $30–$80/month on our estimate (AWS Sydney t3.small–t3.medium) | Full BI platform, unlimited users, core dashboards, Metabot AI (requires your own API key — Anthropic models supported) |
Infrastructure cost depends on your database size and user count. The exact figure depends on your instance size, database, and user count. On our estimate, a small business running Metabase on an AWS Sydney t3.small EC2 instance with an RDS database would budget from roughly AUD $30–$80 per month in AWS costs — run your own numbers through the AWS Sydney pricing calculator for a firm quote. That is the entire cost of a fully sovereign BI stack.
Metabase Cloud
| Plan | Monthly (USD) | Monthly (AUD approx.) | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | USD $100/month (5 users; +$6/user extra) | ~AUD $140/month (approx, at 1.40) | 5 users included, managed cloud hosting, 3-day support SLA, SOC 2 |
| Pro | USD $575/month (10 users; +$12/user extra) | ~AUD $805/month (approx, at 1.40) | 10 users included, SSO, row/column permissions, AI controls, white-label embedding; Cloud or self-hosted |
| Enterprise | Custom (from ~USD $20k/year) | Custom | Dedicated success engineer, 1-day SLA, professional services |
Important: Metabase Cloud pricing is listed in USD. As a general guide, overseas suppliers of digital services to Australian consumers are required to charge 10% GST once they pass the AUD $75,000 registration threshold — so you may or may not see GST on your invoice depending on how Metabase is registered. Treat the USD figures as ex-GST and confirm the final amount, and your own GST credit position, with your accountant.

The Pro plan is also available as a self-hosted option (same price, same feature set). Enterprise self-hosted is available on custom pricing. Both add SSO, advanced permissions, and AI governance controls on top of the open-source base.
How it works in practice
Metabase's core workflow is straightforward: connect a data source, then ask questions about it.
Setting up (self-hosted): You spin up a server, deploy Metabase via Docker or a JAR file, and point it at your database. This takes a developer half a day on first attempt. It is not click-and-go. For a business with an AWS account and a developer on staff, the setup process is well-documented and manageable. Without technical staff, it is not feasible.
Building a dashboard: Once connected, non-technical users can build dashboards through a GUI. You click "New question," choose your table, filter, group, and visualise. A marketing manager who has never written SQL can produce a chart of monthly signups in around five minutes.
Metabot — the AI query layer: Metabot is Metabase's natural language interface. You type a question in plain English — "How many customers signed up last month?" or "Show me revenue by state for the last quarter" — and Metabase generates the SQL and returns the result. This is genuinely useful for business users who know what they want to know but not how to ask the database.
Metabot works against your connected data, not a general knowledge model. It does not hallucinate business data — it queries your actual database. That is an important distinction. The AI is an interface layer, not a data source.
One important nuance: Metabot is available on all tiers, including open-source, but the open-source version requires you to supply your own API key (currently Anthropic models only). Metabase's own hosted AI service is a Cloud-only add-on. On the paid Cloud plans, Metabot is more turnkey — no API key management required.
Alerts and subscriptions: You can subscribe to a dashboard and receive email or Slack updates on a schedule. A weekly revenue summary sent to your team's Slack channel takes about ten minutes to configure. This turns Metabase from a passive tool into an active reporting system.
Embedding: Metabase supports embedding dashboards into external applications. This is useful for SaaS businesses that want to give their own customers analytics within their product. The paid tiers unlock more advanced embedding options.
What it does well
- Data sovereignty by default. Self-host on AWS Sydney and your data physically never leaves Australia. No other major BI tool in this category offers this at zero software cost. For businesses processing customer data, this is the most important thing Metabase does.
- Free for serious use. The open-source tier is not artificially limited. Unlimited users, full dashboarding, and alerts are all available without paying for software. Metabot AI is also available on open-source — you supply your own Anthropic API key; there are no AI feature paywalls at the core level.
- Non-technical dashboards on top of technical data. A developer connects the database once. Business users then explore it without writing SQL. This division of labour works well in practice.
- Broad database support. Metabase connects to PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, BigQuery, Redshift, Snowflake, MongoDB, Athena, Databricks, ClickHouse, Oracle, and others. Most Australian businesses running common database stacks are covered. There are no native connectors for accounting platforms such as Xero — you would need to export data into a supported database first.
- Active open-source community. Metabase has been open-source since 2014. The GitHub repository is active, documentation is solid, and community forums are responsive. This matters for self-hosted tools — if something breaks, help is findable.
What it doesn't do well
- Technical barrier is real. The self-hosted version requires someone who can manage a server, handle Docker or JARs, and run updates. For sole traders and small teams without technical staff, this is a hard stop. The tool is not available in the same way that a SaaS subscription is available.
- Metabase Cloud is expensive for small teams. If you cannot self-host, the cloud version starts at USD $100/month for five users (approx AUD $140 at 1.40). For a business that could use Looker Studio for free or Power BI for around AUD $17/user/month, that premium is hard to justify without a compelling data sovereignty reason.
- Metabot has limits. Natural language queries work well for straightforward questions against well-structured data. The current version cannot generate SQL with parameters or field filters, cannot modify visualisation formatting, and struggles with tables beyond the first 100 in a database. Metabot is a useful shortcut, not a replacement for a data analyst on difficult problems. On open-source, running Metabot requires managing your own Anthropic API key and the associated costs.
- No native predictive analytics or forecasting. Metabase shows you what happened. It does not natively predict what will happen next. For forecasting or advanced statistical analysis, you need a different tool or a custom integration.
- Updates are your responsibility (self-hosted). Metabase releases updates regularly. On self-hosted, you apply them manually. In a cloud product, this is invisible. Here, it is a small but real ongoing overhead.
Australian fit
This is the section that makes Metabase unusual among BI tools for the Australian market.
Data sovereignty — the headline. Under the Privacy Act 1988, Australian businesses that handle personal information must take reasonable steps to protect it, including from overseas disclosure in some circumstances. The privacy landscape is changing: the small business exemption that keeps many smaller businesses outside the Act is under active review and is widely expected to narrow or be removed in a future tranche of reform, though no removal has been legislated and no firm date is confirmed. Check oaic.gov.au for current status and seek your own advice on whether the exemption still covers you. If it goes, these obligations will extend to a large cohort of businesses currently exempt.
Self-hosted Metabase on AWS Sydney (ap-southeast-2) or Azure Australia East keeps all data processing and storage within Australian jurisdiction. No data crosses to the United States. No US cloud provider has a legal hook into your customer data. This is a genuine competitive advantage for Metabase in the post-amendment environment.
For comparison: Power BI in its default configuration processes data through Microsoft's Azure infrastructure, which may route through US or European data centres depending on your tenant configuration. Looker Studio stores data on Google's infrastructure. Julius AI, a popular AI-native competitor, stores and processes data in the United States (confirmed via Julius AI's privacy and data security documentation, checked 8 June 2026). Self-hosted Metabase is the clean answer to the "where does my data go?" question.
Metabase Cloud data location. Metabase Cloud offers regions in the US, Europe, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific. The Asia-Pacific region option is a meaningful improvement over a US-only position, but Metabase does not publish specific data centre addresses or guarantee which sub-region within Asia-Pacific applies. Confirmed via metabase.com/security (verified 7 June 2026). If your compliance requirement is "data must remain in Australia specifically," self-hosted on AWS Sydney (ap-southeast-2) is the only clean answer — Cloud's Asia-Pacific region may include Singapore or Tokyo rather than Sydney. Verify your region assignment with Metabase before relying on it for Privacy Act compliance.
AUD pricing. Metabase does not display AUD pricing on its website. All cloud pricing is in USD (confirmed via metabase.com/pricing, 7 June 2026). This is a minor friction point, not a blocker.
GST. Metabase is a US-based company. Under the ATO's rules for imported digital services, an overseas supplier must charge 10% GST once it passes the AUD $75,000 registration threshold, so whether GST appears on your Metabase invoice depends on the company's registration status — confirm the final figure with your accountant. Self-hosted open-source has no purchase transaction, so GST is not applicable for the software itself — only for your AWS/Azure infrastructure costs, which are billed by those providers.
Australian support. Metabase offers community support for the open-source tier and paid support for cloud and enterprise plans. Community forums are global; Enterprise plans include a dedicated success engineer and a 1-day SLA response time (confirmed via metabase.com/pricing, 7 June 2026), but there is no dedicated AU support channel or AU business hours support for standard tiers. For a critical internal BI tool, the lack of local support hours is worth factoring into enterprise decisions.
AU context in outputs. Metabase queries your own data and does not inject AI-generated business context. Its outputs are as Australian as your data. There is no risk of a US-centric model generating AU-irrelevant summaries.
Alternatives
Power BI — Microsoft's BI platform. Better AI integration, deeper Microsoft 365 ecosystem, more complex setup. AUD pricing available. Starts at approximately AUD $17/user/month (Power BI Pro). Data sovereignty depends on your Azure tenant region — configurable but not automatic. Consider Power BI if you are already in the Microsoft stack and your team can handle a steeper learning curve.
Looker Studio — Google's free BI tool. Best for visualising Google Ads, Google Analytics, and Google Workspace data. No SQL database connectivity in the same way as Metabase. Free. Data stored on Google infrastructure in regions that may include the US. Consider Looker Studio if your data is already in Google's ecosystem and data sovereignty is not a primary concern.
Julius AI — AI-native data analysis. Upload a CSV, ask questions in plain English. Simpler interface than Metabase, no SQL or server required. Stores and processes data in the United States (per Julius AI's published privacy documentation). No self-hosting option. Consider Julius AI if you need quick analysis of flat files and don't have a live database to connect to. Not a like-for-like comparison — Julius AI is an analytics assistant, not a dashboarding platform.
Bottom line
Metabase is the right choice for a specific type of Australian business: one that has a developer or technical analyst on staff, has customer data that needs to stay in Australia, and wants a serious BI platform without a serious software bill.
The Privacy Act reform story is real. If the small business exemption is narrowed or removed — as the current review is widely expected to recommend, though nothing is yet legislated — a large cohort of Australian SMBs would come under stricter data handling obligations. Self-hosted Metabase on AWS Sydney is a clean, defensible answer to those obligations — and it costs nothing for the software itself.
The weakness is equally real: if you don't have technical staff, self-hosted Metabase is not an option. And Metabase Cloud, while simpler, is expensive and puts your data in the US. This review recommends the self-hosted path or not at all.
Watch for: Metabase's AI capabilities are developing rapidly. Metabot's natural language query quality is improving with each release. Within 12 months, the gap between Metabase and AI-native analytics tools may close significantly. If you're evaluating now, the 2026 open-source release is the version to test.
