Leonardo AI vs NightCafe for Australians in 2026: An All-Australian Derby

By Adam · 12 Jun 2026 · 8 min read
Head-to-head verdict

Our pick: Leonardo AI. The verdict below says who should buy the other.

Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Winner: Leonardo AI for most Australian businesses. It has the deeper toolkit — its own foundation models, a sketch-to-image canvas, 8K upscaling, video and an API. Pick NightCafe if onshore data storage matters more. Both are Australian-built. Both score 21/25.

Corrected 21 September 2026: this comparison said NightCafe was half Leonardo's price to start. It is not, any more. NightCafe has retired its US$5.99 AI Beginner tier, so its entry is now US$12.49/month against Leonardo's US$12 — Leonardo is fractionally the cheaper start. Every price line below has been corrected and the entry-price argument for NightCafe withdrawn. The winner does not change; the reason it wins gets stronger.

What both tools actually do

This is a head-to-head no global publication can write credibly. Both contenders are Australian. Both scored 21/25 in our Leonardo AI review and NightCafe review. The tiebreak has to come from somewhere other than the scoreboard.

Leonardo AI is the bigger story. It was founded in Sydney in December 2022 and raised A$47 million in 2023, led by Blackbird Ventures. In 2024 it shipped Phoenix, billed as Australia's first homegrown foundation model. The same year Canva — another Australian company — bought it. By late 2024 it reported more than 29 million users and over 200 staff. The product is a creative workstation. You get Leonardo's own models (Phoenix, Lucid Origin) plus third-party heavyweights — Google's Veo 3 and Nano Banana, OpenAI's GPT Image 1. Around them sit a Realtime Canvas for sketch-to-image work, an 8K Universal Upscaler, custom model training, short AI video and an API.

NightCafe is older, smaller and quieter. Australian software engineer Angus Russell founded it in 2019. The operator is NightCafe Studio Pty Ltd, a Queensland company (ABN 76 654 351 701), under Queensland law. Its pitch is breadth in one account: many of the best image models behind a single login, so you stop juggling five vendor sites. It runs on credits with free daily top-ups, and a genuine community — daily challenges, streaks and badges that earn you more credits.

Both replace the same job: type a prompt, pick a model, get usable images. The difference is what surrounds that job — and where your money and data end up.

Pricing in Australia

Here is the awkward shared truth: neither Australian-built tool bills in Australian dollars. Both quote US dollars, so the figure on your statement moves with the exchange rate. Our AUD conversions below use ≈1.40.

The GST treatment differs, and it matters for business buyers.

Leonardo AI bills through Stripe, ex GST. Its pricing FAQ says tax is added at checkout only if Leonardo has crossed the local tax threshold. So the headline number may not be the final number. The upside: Leonardo Interactive Pty Ltd has an ABN (56 662 209 485), so your Stripe invoice carries it.

Leonardo plan Price (USD/mo, ex GST) Approx AUD (≈1.40, ex GST)
Free $0 $0
Apprentice US$12 ≈ AUD$16.80
Artisan US$30 ≈ AUD$42.00
Maestro US$60 ≈ AUD$84.00
Teams from US$24/seat (min 3 seats) ≈ AUD$33.60/seat

NightCafe is cleaner on tax. Paddle acts as Merchant of Record, charges Australian GST at checkout on top of the ex-GST USD price, and issues the tax receipt.

NightCafe plan Price (USD/mo, ex GST) Approx AUD (≈1.40, ex GST)
Free $0 $0
AI Hobbyist USD$12.49 ≈ AUD$17.49
AI Enthusiast USD$24.99 ≈ AUD$34.99
AI Creator USD$39.99 ≈ AUD$55.99
AI Artist USD$62.49 ≈ AUD$87.49

Leonardo's prices verified 21 September 2026; NightCafe's re-verified the same day in a browser from an Australian IP after it restructured its tiers and retired AI Beginner. Earlier figures were verified 3 June 2026. All are ex GST; GST is added at checkout — conditionally by Stripe for Leonardo, always by Paddle for NightCafe. Annual billing discounts apply on both (roughly 17–20% on Leonardo; quarterly and annual discounts on NightCafe).

On usage, both run consumption models — Leonardo's tokens, NightCafe's credits. Heavy jobs burn faster than the headline price implies on either tool. Leonardo's video and 8K upscaling are token-hungry. NightCafe's top models cost more credits per run. Budget on usage, not the sticker.

On free tiers, NightCafe wins outright. Its daily top-ups come with full IP ownership — the terms assign artwork IP to you, commercial use allowed. Leonardo's free tier is generous at 150 tokens a day, but images are public by default and the IP vests in Leonardo. On Leonardo, you must pay to own your work.

Where Leonardo AI wins

  • Feature depth — clearly. Its own foundation models plus Veo 3, Nano Banana and GPT Image 1, a Realtime Canvas, 8K upscaling, custom model training, video and an API. NightCafe offers model breadth, start images, ControlNet and bulk tools — useful, but not a pro editing suite. Leonardo scored 5/5 on Feature Depth; NightCafe scored 4/5.
  • Security posture. SOC2 certified, AWS-hosted, AES-256 at rest, TLS 1.2+ in transit. NightCafe advertises no SOC 2, ISO 27001 or IRAP certification. Procurement teams will notice.
  • Scale and backing. Canva ownership, 29 million-plus users and 200-plus staff. NightCafe is a lean operation with no enterprise SLA.
  • Mobile. Native iOS and Android apps that sync to your account.
  • Print and production output. The Universal Upscaler takes an image to 8K with generative refinement — real client-deliverable territory.

Where NightCafe wins

  • Your data stays in Australia. The privacy policy states personal information is stored onshore, with Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) coverage. Leonardo stores data in the United States on AWS, with no published AU region. This is the single biggest gap between two "Australian" tools.
  • Australian law, end to end. A Queensland company under Queensland-law terms, with Queensland courts holding jurisdiction. That is rarer than Sydney founding plus US data centres.
  • GST done properly, every time. Paddle charges GST at checkout and issues the tax receipt. Leonardo's tax is conditional on a threshold — your final price is less predictable.
  • Free-tier ownership. You own what you make from day one, commercial use included. Leonardo's free tier is an IP trap for client work.
  • Credits that roll over. Unused subscription credits carry forward, which suits irregular use. On entry price the two are now level — NightCafe US$12.49 against Leonardo US$12 — so price is no longer a reason to pick either.

Which to pick — decision framework

  • You produce client or marketing work weekly → Leonardo AI on a paid plan. The canvas, upscaler and model lineup earn their keep.
  • Your data must stay onshore — legal, health, government-adjacent, or just policy → NightCafe. It is the only one of the pair storing personal information in Australia.
  • You want commercial rights without paying → NightCafe. Its free tier assigns IP to you; Leonardo's keeps it.
  • You need sketch-to-image, 8K print output or AI video → Leonardo AI. NightCafe has no equivalent.
  • Your procurement checklist asks for certifications → Leonardo AI (SOC2). NightCafe advertises none.
  • You want predictable GST on the invoice → NightCafe. Paddle charges GST at checkout every time and issues the receipt; Leonardo's tax is conditional. On the price itself the two are level at the entry tier.

The verdict

Pick Leonardo AI unless your data must stay in Australia. For the working Australian business owner, it does more. Its own foundation models, the Realtime Canvas, 8K upscaling, video and an API beat NightCafe's breadth-in-one-account pitch. Paid plans carry full commercial ownership and a documented security posture. That is why it took 5/5 on Feature Depth where NightCafe took 4/5.

NightCafe wins the thing this publication exists to measure: Australian Fit, 5/5 against Leonardo's 4/5. It is an Australian company, under Australian law, storing personal data in Australia, with GST receipted cleanly. Both clear the Australian Fit gate (Australian Fit 4/5 or better), so both keep five-star ratings. But a tie on paper is not a tie in practice. Depth wins for the default reader; residency wins for the reader who needs it.

One caveat on the winner. Leonardo bills in USD, adds GST only conditionally, and keeps your data in the United States. If any of those three is a dealbreaker, the derby flips — take NightCafe and lose little.
