Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Verdict (TL;DR): If your business already runs on Google Workspace, Data Studio is a no-brainer — it's genuinely free, connects natively to Google Analytics, Sheets, and Search Console, and now includes Gemini AI for natural-language data exploration (on the paid Pro tier). But the free ride ends the moment you need to pull in non-Google data, and the data governance story is more complex than Google's marketing suggests.

What Data Studio is

Google Data Studio is a free, browser-based business intelligence and data visualisation tool. You connect it to data sources — Google Sheets, Google Analytics 4, BigQuery, Search Console, YouTube — and build interactive dashboards and reports without writing a line of code.

A quick naming note for context: this product was originally called Data Studio, renamed to Looker Studio in October 2022 (when Google absorbed it into the Looker product family after acquiring Looker in 2019), and then renamed back to Data Studio in April 2026 — a move Google described as a strategic clarification to reduce confusion between the free reporting tool and the enterprise Looker platform. If you've seen it called "Data Studio," that's the same product.

It sits squarely in the SMB market alongside Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, and Metabase. But Data Studio has one weapon those competitors don't: the price tag is zero. The core product is free, permanently, with no usage limits on report creation, dashboards, or viewer seats.

As of mid-2026, Google has added Gemini AI features to Data Studio — but these require the paid Data Studio Pro subscription. Specifically: natural-language calculated field creation and AI-assisted content export to Slides are available for Pro subscribers. Both carry a "Preview" label and are currently included at no additional charge, though Google's documentation notes that fees may apply when the preview period ends. A separate "Conversational Analytics" feature — which lets users query their data in plain English — does not require Gemini in Data Studio to be enabled, but its availability depends on the connected data source.

What it costs in Australia

This is where Data Studio breaks from every competitor in the category.

Plan Monthly (AUD) What you get
Data Studio (free) $0 Unlimited reports, unlimited dashboards, all native Google connectors, unlimited viewer seats
Data Studio Pro ~$15.40 per user/month (approx. AUD, inc GST) Team workspaces, enterprise access controls, SLA, Gemini AI features (Preview), Google Cloud support
Google BigQuery Usage-based Separate BigQuery pricing applies; required for some advanced analytics and certain Conversational Analytics features

Currency note: Data Studio Pro is priced in USD at USD $9/user/month (confirmed current pricing). One important caveat: billing is per user per Google Cloud project — if you manage clients across separate GCP projects, each project incurs its own per-user fee. At the current rate of approximately AUD 1.40 per USD, that's roughly AUD $12.60/user/month before GST. Google charges 10% GST on all Google Cloud Platform services sold to Australian customers (in effect since November 2016), making the AUD all-in price approximately AUD $13.86/user/month. Verify the exact amount at your Google Cloud billing console at the time of purchase.

For the vast majority of Australian SMBs, the free tier is the whole product. You are not getting a crippled demo — you get working dashboards, live data connections, shareable reports, and unlimited viewer seats, all at no cost.

How it works in practice

Setup takes about ten minutes for anyone already using Google products. You open Data Studio at datastudio.google.com (or the redirect from lookerstudio.google.com), hit "Create," choose a report or explorer, and connect a data source. If you pick Google Analytics 4 or Google Sheets, the connection is one click and a permissions grant. Your data appears in a drag-and-drop canvas where you add charts, scorecards, date range controls, and filters.

The Gemini AI features — on Pro — let you use natural language to create calculated fields and export dashboard content to Slides with AI-generated summaries. The Conversational Analytics feature, which lets users query data in plain English without building charts manually, operates separately from the Gemini Pro features. The depth of Conversational Analytics depends on the connected data source — it works best with BigQuery-connected data.

Sharing is Google-native: you share a report link the same way you share a Google Doc. You can embed dashboards in other web pages or export to PDF. For teams already living in Google Workspace, this friction is essentially zero.

The moment you step outside the Google ecosystem, the experience changes. Connecting Data Studio to a Shopify store, a Facebook Ads account, a Xero ledger, or a Salesforce CRM requires a third-party connector. The most common option is Supermetrics, which starts at USD $39/month (annual billing) or USD $49/month (monthly billing) for a Starter plan. That cost quickly erodes the "free" value proposition for businesses with mixed data environments.

What it does well

  • Genuinely free at a useful tier. Not a 14-day trial, not a feature-limited teaser. The core product is permanently free for any business with a Google account.
  • Native Google Workspace integration. Google Analytics 4, Search Console, Sheets, BigQuery, YouTube, Google Ads — all connect in one click. For businesses running marketing on Google's stack, nothing else connects to Google's own data this quickly.
  • Drag-and-drop interface. Building a traffic dashboard, a sales pipeline report, or a marketing attribution overview takes an hour, not a week. No SQL required for standard use cases.
  • Unlimited viewer seats. Sharing dashboards with clients, board members, or the whole team costs nothing extra. This is a genuine advantage over Power BI's per-seat licensing for read-only users.
  • Conversational Analytics for supported data sources. For BigQuery-connected data, users can query their data in plain English without building charts manually — a meaningful capability for small business owners who don't live in spreadsheets.

What it doesn't do well

  • Weak connector ecosystem for non-Google data. If your business operates on Shopify, HubSpot, Xero, MYOB, Meta Ads, or LinkedIn, you need third-party connectors that cost real money. The "free" headline is accurate but incomplete for businesses outside the Google ecosystem.
  • Gemini AI is Pro-only and still in Preview. The Gemini features — calculated field assistance and Slides export summaries — require a paid Pro subscription and are still labelled Preview, with a warning that fees may apply after the preview period ends. The free tier gets none of these. Don't buy into the AI hype until you've tested Conversational Analytics against your own BigQuery data.
  • Data governance is opaque. Google's infrastructure is excellent, but understanding exactly where your Data Studio data goes — and whether it stays within Australia — requires more digging than most SMBs will do. See the Australian Fit section below.
  • Limited advanced analytics. Data Studio does not handle complex statistical modelling, predictive analytics, or R/Python integrations. For serious analytical work, you'd need BigQuery or a dedicated analytics platform.
  • No offline mode. It's browser-only. If your internet drops, your dashboards go with it.

Australian fit

Google has data centres in Sydney and Melbourne — a genuine advantage for Australian businesses that care about where their data lives. If you're connecting to Google Sheets data stored in a Google Workspace for Australia tenancy, your underlying data is stored in Google's AU region. However, whether Data Studio's processing layer — when it runs a report or dashboard query — operates exclusively within the AU region is not clearly confirmed in Google's publicly available Data Processing Addendum. Google's DPA applies Australian Privacy Act 1988 as an "Applicable Privacy Law," meaning Google's data processing obligations extend to AU Privacy Act requirements, but the specific data residency guarantees for Data Studio processing are deferred to service-specific terms not clearly published at the time of this review. If your business handles personal customer data and data residency is a compliance requirement, get written confirmation from Google before connecting sensitive data. This is not a red flag unique to Data Studio — it applies to any cloud BI tool — but the opacity is worth flagging.

The complexity arises with the Privacy Act. Australia's Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) require businesses to take reasonable steps to protect personal information. If you're building dashboards containing customer data — email addresses, purchase histories, identifying information — you need to understand what Google does with that data when it processes a Data Studio report. This is a conversation to have with your privacy adviser before connecting sensitive data.

Pricing for Data Studio Pro is in USD, which is a minor friction. Google charges 10% GST on all Google Cloud Platform services sold to Australian customers (in effect since November 2016). The all-in AUD cost for Data Studio Pro works out to approximately AUD $13.86/user/month at current exchange rates — verify the exact amount at your Google Cloud billing console at time of purchase.

Google's customer support for free-tier users is documentation-only. Data Studio Pro includes Google Cloud support, but the free tier relies entirely on the community forums and Help Centre. For Australian businesses with urgent dashboard issues, there is no phone support and no guaranteed SLA unless you're on Pro.

One practical note: Data Studio's outputs are not Australia-aware by default. Currency will display as USD unless you manually set it. Date formats default to US conventions unless overridden. These are small but real friction points for Australian SMBs building client-facing dashboards.

Alternatives

Microsoft Power BI — More powerful, more feature-complete, and Copilot AI integration is more broadly available across the product. The catch: it's not free. Power BI Pro costs AU$21.00/user/month (annual, exc. GST); Premium Per User (required alongside Fabric capacity for Copilot) costs AU$35.90/user/month. Consider Power BI if you're already on Microsoft 365 or need advanced analytics, DirectQuery to enterprise databases, or more mature AI features.

Julius AI — A newer entrant with a better conversational AI interface for data exploration. You upload CSVs or connect data sources and query them in plain English. Better NL experience than Data Studio's Gemini features, but far less integrated with the broader ecosystem. Good for analysts who want AI-first data exploration rather than dashboard building. [Internal review: not yet published — check Review-Queue.md.]

Metabase — The better choice for businesses that need to query a database directly. Metabase connects to PostgreSQL, MySQL, and other SQL databases and generates reports from live queries. The open-source version is free; Metabase Cloud Starter costs USD $100/month + $6/user/month. If your data lives in a database rather than Google Sheets or GA4, Metabase is more appropriate than Data Studio.

Bottom line

For Australian businesses that already use Google Workspace — and that is a large cohort — Data Studio is the obvious starting point for business intelligence. The price is zero, the Google integrations work without setup, and Conversational Analytics adds genuine plain-English data querying for BigQuery-connected data. A marketing team tracking GA4, Search Console, and Google Ads performance can have a polished live dashboard running in an afternoon with no technical skills required.

The ceiling appears quickly, though. Add a Facebook Ads account, a Shopify store, or MYOB to the mix, and you're paying for third-party connectors that can cost more per month than a Power BI subscription. The Gemini AI features are Pro-only and still in Preview — not a reason to upgrade on their own yet. And the data governance story requires more attention than Google's one-click onboarding implies — particularly for any business handling personal customer data under the Privacy Act.

The Australian Fit score of 3/5 reflects a genuine gap. Google's AU infrastructure is strong, but four things hold it back: USD-only Pro pricing (billed per user per GCP project — a hidden complexity for agencies), 10% GST on top, limited local support on the free tier, and opaque data residency terms for Data Studio specifically. Together they mean it doesn't serve Australians quite as well as the raw product quality would suggest.

Use Data Studio if you live in the Google ecosystem. Evaluate Power BI or Metabase if you don't. Either way, there is no excuse for not trying the free tier — the downside risk is nil.

Score

Criterion Score Notes
Value for Money 5/5 The free tier is genuinely exceptional — unlimited reports, unlimited dashboards, unlimited viewer seats. No other BI tool in this category comes close at zero cost.
Ease of Use 4/5 Clean drag-and-drop canvas, one-click Google integrations, and shareable links make onboarding fast. Third-party connector setup is frustrating and adds cost.
Feature Depth 3/5 Gemini AI features are Pro-only and still in Preview; free tier gets Conversational Analytics for BigQuery data. Works best within the Google ecosystem; limited for non-Google data sources without additional connectors.
Australian Fit 3/5 Google's AU data centres are a genuine plus. However: USD Pro pricing (billed per user per GCP project), 10% GST on top, opaque data residency terms for Data Studio specifically, and documentation-only support for free tier.
Reliability & Support 5/5 Google's infrastructure is best-in-class for uptime. Documentation is extensive. Community forums are active. Free-tier SLA is nil, but in practice outages are rare and brief.

Frequently asked questions

Is Data Studio available in Australia?

Yes. It's a free, browser-based Google tool available to any Australian business with a Google account, and Google operates data centres in Sydney and Melbourne.

Does Data Studio charge in AUD?

The free tier costs nothing. Data Studio Pro is priced in USD (US$9/user/month) — roughly A$13/user/month all-in once you add the 10% GST Google charges on Cloud services and convert at current rates.

Is there a free plan?

Yes, and it's the whole product for most Australian SMBs. The free tier gives unlimited reports, dashboards and viewer seats with all native Google connectors — permanently, not a trial.

Does Data Studio keep my data in Australia?

Partly unclear. Google has Sydney and Melbourne regions, but whether Data Studio's processing layer stays in the AU region isn't clearly confirmed in Google's public DPA. For sensitive customer data, get written confirmation from Google first.

Who is Data Studio best for?

Australian businesses already on Google Workspace — GA4, Sheets, Search Console and Google Ads connect in one click. If your data lives in Shopify, Xero or Meta Ads, you'll pay for third-party connectors; consider Power BI or Metabase instead.
