The gate: Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

Arithmetic note (added 5 Oct 2026): the five criterion scores in this edition add up to 16/25. The 13/25 total shown here was an addition error in the original file. We have left every figure as it was written. Edition 2 corrected the total to 16/25 with the same criterion scores, so the move from 13 to 16 was a correction, not a change of verdict.
Verdict (TL;DR): Copy.ai is not the tool it was. The simple AI copywriter that drafted your blog intros and Instagram captions has rebuilt itself as a "go-to-market AI platform" aimed at sales and marketing teams — workflows that research accounts, write outreach sequences and repurpose content at scale. The chat writer and 90-plus templates still work, and they sit behind a genuinely useful free plan (2,000 words a month) and a Chat plan at US$29/month (about A$45). But the moment you want the automated workflows that are now the headline, the next plan up is US$1,000/month — there is no affordable middle. For an Australian solo operator or small business that just wants to write faster, the free or Chat tier is fine, if dated, value. For the workflow platform, the price is built for a US sales department, not a Tasmanian consultancy. It bills in USD only, with no native AUD pricing, no Australian data residency and SOC 2 the only certification on show. A capable writer trapped inside an enterprise sales pitch.

What Copy.ai is
Copy.ai launched as one of the first mainstream AI copywriting tools — you picked a template, typed a few words about your product, and it spat out blog intros, product descriptions, ad copy and social captions. That tool still exists inside the product. But in 2026 the company describes itself as "The First AI-Native GTM Platform" — GTM meaning go-to-market, the sales-and-marketing machinery of a business. The pitch is no longer "write copy faster." It's "run your whole sales and marketing motion through one AI platform."
Four pieces make up the modern product. Chat is a prompting interface — much like ChatGPT — for one-off tasks, and it's where the 90-plus writing templates live. Workflows are the headline act: multi-step chains that mimic a human's process — research a target account, find a contact, draft a personalised email, then repeat across a list. Brand Voice stores your tone so outputs sound like you. Infobase is a knowledge store you load with company and product facts so the AI stops inventing them.
Under the bonnet, Copy.ai is model-agnostic: it routes to OpenAI's GPT models, Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini, and lets you pick per task (Copy.ai help centre). That's a sensible design — you're not locked to one engine — but it also means Copy.ai is a layer on top of the same models you could reach directly. Its customer wall lists Siemens, Lenovo, ServiceNow and Gong, which tells you exactly who it's now built for: enterprise revenue teams, not the freelancer who signed up in 2022.
To its credit, Copy.ai states plainly on its security page that it "doesn't train on your data," doesn't share prompts and doesn't sell data. That's the right answer, and worth noting in a category where it isn't always the answer.
What it costs in Australia
Here's where the Australian buyer needs to pay attention, because the plan structure has a hole in the middle you could drive a truck through.
| Plan | Price (USD) | Approx AUD (≈1.55) | Seats | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | US$0 | A$0 | 1 | 2,000 words/month, Chat, Infobase, basic templates |
| Chat | US$29/mo (or US$24/mo billed annually, US$288/yr) | ≈ A$45/mo (annual ≈ A$37/mo) | 5 | Unlimited words in chat, unlimited chat projects, GPT/Claude/Gemini access |
| Growth | US$1,000/mo (billed US$12,000/yr) | ≈ A$1,550/mo | 75 | Everything in Chat + 20,000 workflow credits/month |
| Expansion | US$2,000/mo (US$24,000/yr) | ≈ A$3,100/mo | 150 | 45,000 workflow credits/month |
| Scale | US$3,000/mo (US$36,000/yr) | ≈ A$4,650/mo | 200 | 75,000 workflow credits/month |
| Enterprise | Custom (quote on demand) | — | Custom | API access, 20+ integrations, dedicated support, security controls |
Pricing as of 3 June 2026, from copy.ai/prices and the free-plan help article. All prices are USD — Copy.ai shows no native AUD pricing. AUD figures are our own conversion at ≈1.55 and will move with the exchange rate. GST treatment below.
The jump is the story. You can write all day on Chat at US$29/month (about A$45). But the automated workflows — the prospecting, the outreach sequences, the account research that the entire 2026 marketing push is built around — start on the Growth plan at US$1,000/month, roughly A$1,550. There is no US$99 or US$199 self-serve workflow tier. For a small Australian business, that's the difference between an affordable writing assistant and an enterprise contract with nothing in between.
GST: Like most US software firms selling into Australia, Copy.ai is required to add 10% GST on sales to Australian consumers under the ATO's digital-services rules. Neither Copy.ai's pricing page nor its security page states how it handles Australian GST, so budget for GST on top of the USD figure and check your tax invoice; if you're GST-registered you can generally claim it back.
Value verdict: The free tier is a real, permanent offer and the most honest part of the line-up. Chat at A$45-ish a month is fair if you write a lot and want model choice in one window. Everything above it is priced for a US sales department and makes no sense for a sole trader or small firm — at A$1,550/month you'd want a dedicated revenue team to justify it.
How it works in practice
For everyday writing, Copy.ai is quick and familiar. Open Chat, pick a template or just prompt it, and it drafts a 500-word blog post, a batch of subject lines or ten ad variations in under a minute. Brand Voice keeps the tone consistent once you've set it up, and Infobase cuts down the made-up "facts" that plague generic chatbots. If your need is "help me write more, faster," the free or Chat tier does that job without fuss.
The Workflows are the genuinely different part — and the part most Australians won't reach. A prospecting workflow can take a list of target companies, research each one, find a contact, and draft a personalised first email, all in one run. An ABM (account-based marketing) workflow can generate insights and assets for your top accounts at scale. Built well, these save a sales team real hours. But they consume workflow credits, and credits only come with the US$1,000-plus plans. So the most-promoted capability is locked behind a four-figure monthly spend.
The honest read: most of what a small Australian business needs — fast, on-brand copy — lives in the cheap tiers. The expensive tiers buy automation that only pays off at sales-team scale.
What it does well
- A genuinely useful free plan. 2,000 words a month, permanent, no card required, with Chat and Infobase. A real try-before-you-buy, not a 7-day tease.
- Model choice in one window. Route the same task to GPT, Claude or Gemini and pick what works. You're not locked to one engine.
- A clear "we don't train on your data" stance. Stated plainly on the security page, alongside no prompt-sharing and no data-selling.
- Fast, on-brand drafting. With Brand Voice and Infobase set up, it produces consistent copy that needs less cleanup than a raw chatbot.
- Built for real workflows at scale — if you're the right buyer. For an enterprise revenue team, the automated prospecting and ABM workflows are the actual value.
What to watch out for
- No native AUD pricing. Everything is in USD. Australians pay an exchange-rate-dependent amount and carry the currency risk.
- A huge gap in the plans. Straight from US$29/month to US$1,000/month. If you want workflows but aren't an enterprise, there's nothing for you.
- It's pivoted away from solo creators. The product, the customer logos and the marketing are all aimed at sales-and-marketing teams now. A freelancer is no longer the target user.
- No Australian data residency. US vendor, US-centric hosting; no AU region advertised. Fine for marketing copy, a question for regulated data.
- Thin certifications. The security page shows SOC 2 and SSO only — no ISO 27001 or IRAP, and no public trust centre portal. That matters for government or enterprise procurement here.
- No local support. Help centre and a support form only — no AU office or business hours.
Australian fit
- Available in Australia: Yes — it's a web platform, open to Australian sign-ups.
- Pricing in AUD: No. USD only. We've converted at ≈1.55; your charge moves with the exchange rate.
- GST: Not stated on Copy.ai's pricing or security pages. Under ATO rules, expect 10% GST added for Australian consumers; check your invoice and claim it back if registered.
- Data residency: None advertised for Australia. US vendor, no AU hosting region on show.
- Local support: None AU-specific — help centre and support form only.
- Training on your data: No. Copy.ai states it never trains on your data and doesn't share or sell prompts.
- AU-aware outputs: No. It writes in whatever English you steer it to — set Brand Voice for Australian spelling, or it'll default to US.
Alternatives
| Tool | Why you might prefer it |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT / Claude direct | If you just want fast writing with model quality, going straight to the source is cheaper and gives you the same engines Copy.ai routes to. (Read our ChatGPT review →) |
| Jasper | A closer like-for-like on the marketing-copy side, with its own brand-voice and campaign features — worth a head-to-head if Copy.ai's enterprise pivot leaves you cold. |
| A native AU or AUD-billing writer | If GST clarity and an Australian tax invoice matter to your bookkeeping, a tool that bills in AUD removes the currency and invoicing friction Copy.ai adds. |
Bottom line
Copy.ai is a capable writer wearing an enterprise sales suit. If you're an Australian solo operator or small business and you just want to draft copy faster, the free plan is a legitimate place to start, and Chat at US$29/month (about A$45) is fair value for unlimited writing with model choice. That's the recommendation for most readers of this site.
But understand what you're buying into. The product's whole 2026 identity — the automated go-to-market workflows — sits behind a US$1,000/month wall with nothing affordable beneath it. It bills in USD, offers no Australian data residency, shows only SOC 2, and has no local support. For a Tasmanian consultancy or a Melbourne small business, that's a writing tool with a free tier worth using and an upper range built for someone else entirely.
It scores 13 for honest reasons. The writing is good and the free tier is real, but the Australian fit is weak — USD-only, no AU hosting, GST unstated — and the plan structure abandons the small buyer the instant they want the platform's marquee feature. We'll refresh this if Copy.ai adds a mid-tier workflow plan or native AUD billing.
Score
| Criterion | Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Value for Money | 3/5 | Real free tier and a fair US$29 Chat plan, but a US$29 → US$1,000 cliff with no affordable workflow tier |
| Ease of Use | 4/5 | Familiar chat-and-template interface; drafts a 500-word post in under a minute; Brand Voice and Infobase reduce cleanup |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | Deep platform — 90+ templates, multi-model chat, multi-step workflows, ABM and prospecting automation — though the depth is locked to expensive tiers |
| Australian Fit | 2/5 | USD-only, no AU data residency, GST unstated, no local support, no AU-aware defaults |
| Reliability & Support | 3/5 | Enterprise customers (Siemens, ServiceNow) and SOC 2, but support is web/help-centre only with no AU presence |
| Total | 13/25 | ⭐⭐⭐ Good |
