Replit vs Firebase Studio for Australians 2026: Build It, or Watch It Close

By Adam · 28 Jun 2026 · 9 min read
Head-to-head verdict

Our pick: Replit. The verdict below says who should buy the other.

Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

Winner: Replit, by default. If you are a non-technical Australian founder building a prototype to demo, Replit is the better pick — and right now it is the only one you can actually start. It turns a plain-English prompt into a live, hosted app in one browser tab, and Core lands at about A$34/month. Firebase Studio was the more interesting bet on paper: Google's Gemini-powered builder on a real cloud IDE, with the best Australian data story in the category. But Google is shutting it down — new signups have been off since 22 June 2026, and the whole product is deleted on 22 March 2027. You cannot start a new project on it. Both tools score 16/25, and both miss our Australian Fit gate, so neither is a category Top Pick. But this contest is settled by a fact, not a feature. Pick Replit.

There is a version of this comparison that would have been a genuinely close fight. A non-technical founder has an idea and two ways to chase it. One path — Replit — is the friendliest on-ramp in coding: describe the app, watch it appear, host it instantly. The other path — Firebase Studio — bet that once your prototype worked, you would want Google's backend, authentication and scaling underneath it, with your database able to sit in Sydney.

That second bet is off the table. Google deprecated Firebase Studio on 19 March 2026 and is winding it down. So the real question for an Australian builder is no longer "prototype now, or graduate later?" It is "which of these can I still use?" The answer is Replit. The rest of this piece explains why, and where the honest exception lies.

At a glance

Replit Firebase Studio
Our score 16/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (AU Fit 2/5) 16/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (AU Fit 3/5)
What it is Full cloud IDE + Agent + hosting Gemini prompt-to-app agent + cloud IDE
Maker Replit (California) Google
Can you start today? Yes No — signups disabled 22 Jun 2026
Status Live, actively developed Sunset 22 Mar 2027; data deleted
Entry paid price (AUD est.) ~A$28/mo (US$20, Core, annual) Free; optional ~A$35/mo Premium
Billing model Effort-based credits ("checkpoints") Free tool; Cloud usage pay-as-you-go
Free tier Yes — daily Agent credits, 1 project Yes — the whole tool is free
Database Built in Cloud Firestore (Sydney region available)
Hosting Built in, region choice on Core+ Firebase App Hosting (no AU region)
Data residency US platform; host region selectable Firestore in Sydney; App Hosting offshore
GST ~10% at checkout AUD ex-GST via Google Australia

Both land on the same number — 16/25, the bottom of "very good" — for very different reasons. Replit is dragged down by an unpredictable bill and a thin Australian story. Firebase Studio earns strong marks for being free, capable and well-localised, then loses almost all of it on reliability, because you cannot rely on a product that is being switched off.

What it costs in Australia

Two completely different money models sit behind these tools.

Replit bills in US dollars. The AUD figures are estimates at roughly AUD 1.40 to the USD, with about 10% GST added at checkout for Australian accounts.

Plan Price (USD) Price (AUD est., ex-GST) What you get
Starter $0 $0 Free daily Agent credits, built-in database, 1 published project
Replit Core $25/mo · $20/mo billed annually ~A$28/mo (annual) $25/month in credits, region publishing, up to 5 collaborators
Replit Pro $100/mo · $95/mo annually ~A$133/mo (annual) $100/month in credits, the most powerful models, premium support
Enterprise Custom Custom SSO, region selection, single-tenant, dedicated support

The catch with Replit, which our full review details, is effort-based "checkpoint" billing. Each Agent request costs according to the time and computation it takes, so a busy build session can burn through your monthly credit allowance faster than you expect. It is the hardest all-in cost to forecast in this category. Set a budget cap on day one.

Firebase Studio is, by contrast, the cleanest money story in coding — which makes the shutdown sting more.

Tier Cost What it adds
No Developer Program profile Free 3 workspaces, standard Gemini quota
Developer Program — Standard Free 10 workspaces
Developer Program — Premium US$24.99/mo (~A$35/mo ex-GST) 30 workspaces, higher Gemini quota

The tool itself is free. Where Australia genuinely won is the plumbing: any paid Developer Program or Cloud usage runs through Google Australia Pty Limited, bills in Australian dollars, and applies 10% GST — proper local invoicing, not a USD sticker your bank converts. Against Replit's USD-only billing, that is a real advantage. It is just an advantage on a product you can no longer sign up for.

The feature difference

Strip away the shutdown for a moment and these tools split along a clear line: the friendliest on-ramp versus the most serious backend.

Replit is the lowest barrier in coding. You open a browser tab and you have a full IDE, a built-in database, one-click deployment and Replit Agent (now Agent 4), which scaffolds a working, hosted app from a sentence. Nothing to install. It runs on a Chromebook or a phone, and the place you build is the place your app goes live. When the prompt-driven approach runs out, there is a real codebase, database and deployment pipeline underneath to keep going. For a non-technical founder racing to a clickable demo, that all-in-one accessibility is the strongest in the field.

Firebase Studio was built for the "graduate" half of the story. Its App Prototyping agent lets a non-coder describe an app and have Gemini build it — wiring up Cloud Firestore and Firebase Authentication when the app needs a database or logins. Underneath sits a full Code OSS IDE (the same open-source core as VS Code) on a Google Cloud VM, with broad framework support well beyond the web. That is the bet the brief describes: prototype it, then let Google's backend, auth and scaling carry it into a real app. Architecturally, it was the more grown-up offering.

But two limits matter even before the sunset. The no-code prototyping agent — the part a non-technical person actually uses — builds Next.js web apps only. And the whole value proposition assumes Google lock-in: it leans on Firebase and Cloud, and you are now being migrated to other Google tools, not set free. Replit's lock-in is lighter; you can export and keep building.

So on raw capability it is close. Replit is the friendlier front door and hosts itself instantly. Firebase Studio had the deeper, more scalable foundation — for as long as it exists.

Australian fit

This is where the brief's premise meets the verified facts, and they pull in opposite directions.

On data residency, Firebase Studio wins — on paper. You can host your app's Cloud Firestore database in the Sydney region (australia-southeast1), a genuine, rare advantage for a Privacy Act-conscious Australian business. The hole in it: Firebase App Hosting has no Australian region — the nearest is Singapore — so the app serving your data can sit offshore even when the data does not. Replit is a US platform whose build-time AI runs US-side; it lets you choose a deployment region for the hosted app on Core and above, but offers nothing like an onshore database guarantee.

On billing and GST, Firebase Studio also wins. AUD invoicing with GST through Google Australia beats Replit's USD-only pricing, where you pay your bank's FX rate plus GST and the landed cost runs above the headline.

On support and availability, Replit wins decisively — because Firebase Studio has none to offer a new user. Replit is live, SOC 2-certified, actively developed, with a status page and premium support on Pro. Firebase Studio never left Preview (no SLA, by Google's own description), signups are disabled, and the product is deleted on 22 March 2027.

That is why our scores land where they do. Firebase Studio takes Australian Fit 3/5 — better than Replit's 2/5 on the strength of AUD/GST and the Sydney database — but its Reliability & Support score is 1/5, the floor, because you cannot rely on something being switched off. Replit's reliability is 3/5: established, but with a self-described probabilistic agent and billing-surprise reports.

Neither tool reaches Australian Fit 4/5. Under our methodology gate, that means neither can be named a category Top Pick, regardless of the 16/25 each scores. Both display four stars on the raw maths; read the verdict, not the number.

Who buys which

Buy Replit if you are the founder in the brief — non-technical, building a prototype to demo, wanting it live today. It is the friendliest on-ramp in coding, it hosts instantly, and it is a real platform you can grow into rather than a dead end. Start free, watch the credit meter like a hawk, and move to Core (about A$34/month annual) when you are building for real. Just go in knowing the bill is the least predictable in the category.

Do not start a new project on Firebase Studio. You cannot, in fact — signups have been off since 22 June 2026 — and even if you could, building on a tool that deletes everything on 22 March 2027 makes no sense. This is the rare comparison where the score is almost irrelevant: the shutdown decides it.

The honest exception. If what attracted you to Firebase Studio was the Australian data story — AUD billing, GST through Google Australia, a Firestore database in Sydney — the good news is that none of it dies with Studio. Those are properties of Google Cloud and Firebase themselves, not the Studio building environment. Google is steering people to Google AI Studio for browser prototyping and Google Antigravity for full code-first development, and you keep the AUD/GST/Sydney-region benefits on either. So the "graduate into a real Google-backed app" ambition is still reachable — just not through the door the brief imagined. If you already have a Firebase Studio workspace, export your code to GitHub now and follow Google's migration path; your deployed apps and Firestore data keep running.

The verdict for the typical Australian buyer: Replit. It is the only one of the two you can start, it lowers the barrier furthest, and it ships your prototype to a live URL in the same tab you built it in. Firebase Studio was the more interesting bet on Google's backend — and the clearest possible reminder that a free, powerful tool from a giant is still worthless for a real project if the giant decides to switch it off.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still sign up for Firebase Studio in 2026?

No. As of 22 June 2026, new workspace creation and user signups are disabled, and the product is sunset on 22 March 2027 when remaining data is permanently deleted. Existing workspaces still work until then.

Which is cheaper for an Australian, Replit or Firebase Studio?

Firebase Studio is free as a tool and bills any Cloud usage in AUD with GST through Google Australia. Replit is USD-only — the free Starter tier costs nothing, and Core is about A$34/month (annual) landed after FX, ex-GST. But price is moot, because you can no longer start a Firebase Studio project.

Which has better Australian data residency?

Firebase Studio, on paper — you can host its Cloud Firestore database in the Sydney region, which Replit cannot match. The catch is that Firebase App Hosting has no Australian region, and the tool is being shut down. Those AUD-billing and Sydney-region benefits live on in Google AI Studio and Google Antigravity.

What should I use instead of Firebase Studio?

For a fresh project today, Replit is the friendlier, still-available choice. If you specifically want Google's backend, Google points you to Google AI Studio (browser prototyping) and Google Antigravity (code-first development), both of which keep the AUD/GST and Sydney-region advantages.

Do both tools work in Australia?

Replit works — it is browser-based with global signup, though there is no AU office or local support. Firebase Studio no longer accepts new users at all, so for a new Australian builder it effectively does not.
