PocketSmith vs Frollo 2026: forecast the future or fix the present?
Our pick: Frollo. The verdict below says who should buy the other.
Winner: Frollo, for the typical Australian. It scores 22/25 to PocketSmith's 18/25, and it is genuinely free. It uses the Consumer Data Right to pull every account into one safe view, with data stored primarily in Australia. PocketSmith is the better tool for one specific buyer — the long-range planner who wants to project cash flow decades ahead across many accounts. Choose PocketSmith if you live to model the future; choose Frollo if you want present-day clarity now.

The tension
These two apps barely compete. They answer different questions.
PocketSmith answers: what will my money look like in 2040? Frollo answers: where did my money go this month, and is it safe?
PocketSmith is a New Zealand-built forecasting tool. It projects daily bank balances up to 60 years out. Frollo is a North Sydney-built Open Banking app. It reads your real accounts now and sorts the spending for you.
One is a planner's spreadsheet with superpowers. The other is a free, Australia-native dashboard for the present. The right pick depends entirely on which question keeps you up at night.

Both connect to Australian banks. Both bill honestly. Neither markets real AI in the product you would actually use. After that, they diverge hard.
What each is for
PocketSmith is the planner's tool. You connect accounts, build budgets, then set up forecasts. You model income, expenses, and one-off events into the future. The calendar projects your balances and net worth forward — as far as 60 years on the top tier. Nothing else in this category forecasts that far.
Frollo is the present-tense tool. You connect your banks through the CDR, and it pulls every account into one view. Spending sorts into categories automatically. Budgets, goals, bills, and net worth all update in real time. It is the app we would hand a non-technical Australian first.
The split matters. PocketSmith rewards people who enjoy modelling scenarios. Frollo rewards people who just want clarity without effort.
Pricing in Australia
Both price in AUD, so there is no FX guesswork either way. The structures are opposite.
Frollo is free. No subscription, no ads, no in-app purchases. Its revenue comes from the B2B Open Banking side of the business, so the consumer app stays free. There is no GST question, because there is no charge.
PocketSmith offers a free plan, then three paid tiers. Prices are published and billed in AUD. As an overseas NZ merchant, it does not separately itemise GST — the AUD figure shown is what you pay.
| Plan | Provider | Price (AUD) | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frollo (consumer app) | Frollo | $0 | Open Banking aggregation, auto categorisation, budgets, goals, bills, net worth |
| PocketSmith Free | PocketSmith | $0 | Manual entry, 2 banks, 2 dashboards, 6-month projection |
| PocketSmith Foundation | PocketSmith | $9.99/mo annual (≈ $14.95 monthly) | Automatic feeds, 6 banks, 6 dashboards, 10-year projection |
| PocketSmith Flourish | PocketSmith | $16.66/mo annual (≈ $24.95 monthly) | 18 banks, 18 dashboards, 30-year projection |
| PocketSmith Fortune | PocketSmith | $26.66/mo annual (≈ $39.95 monthly) | Unlimited banks, unlimited dashboards, 60-year projection, priority support |
PocketSmith's lower rates need annual billing; monthly costs more. The verdict on value: for the long-range forecasting it offers, PocketSmith's pricing is fair, and the free plan is a genuine way to test it. But Frollo does the everyday job for nothing.
Feature diff
Here the two apps stop overlapping.
Forecasting. PocketSmith owns this outright. Its calendar projects daily balances and net worth up to 60 years ahead. Frollo does not forecast decades; it shows your present position and recent trends. If "what happens if I save $X a month until 2040" is your question, only PocketSmith answers it.
Account aggregation. Both pull multiple accounts into one view. The difference is the pipe. Frollo connects only through the CDR — you never type a banking password. PocketSmith uses Basiq under the CDR for Australian feeds, but Yodlee screen-scraping for many other countries. For AU-only accounts both are safe; if you add overseas accounts to PocketSmith, the connection method changes.
Reporting depth. PocketSmith wins. It offers far more dashboards, multi-currency support, and analytical control than Frollo. Frollo's insights are useful but standard — helpful nudges, not deep analysis.
Ease of use. Frollo wins, clearly. PocketSmith has the steepest learning curve in the category; it feels like a friendly personal-finance spreadsheet. Frollo is a tap-and-go dashboard. The trade is real: PocketSmith gives power at the cost of simplicity.
AI. Neither markets genuine AI in the product you would use. PocketSmith's categorisation is explicitly rule-based, by design. Frollo's consumer app uses automatic categorisation, not advertised as AI. For an AI directory, both are honest about this, and neither is the pick if you want an AI money coach.
Maintenance cadence. Worth flagging. Frollo's energy has shifted to its B2B business; its Android app was updated March 2026, but its iOS app has not changed since May 2025. PocketSmith is a mature, actively maintained global product. If you are on iPhone and want a fast-moving app, neither is venture-fintech slick — but PocketSmith's cadence is steadier.
Australian fit
This is where the gap in the scores comes from.
Data residency. Frollo wins decisively. Its privacy policy confirms data is primarily stored in Australia, and it deletes your data on cancellation to the extent reasonably possible. The one exception is if you opt into Yodlee screen-scraping for an account, which may process data in the US. PocketSmith stores data offshore as an NZ-built global product, publishes no AU data-residency option, and does not publish its data-centre location — only that data is encrypted at rest. For Australians who want financial data onshore, that is the deciding sticking point.
CDR / Open Banking. Frollo is an Accredited Data Recipient under the Consumer Data Right, bound by the CDR Rules and Privacy Safeguards on top of the Privacy Act 1988. It was an early mover on Open Banking in Australia. PocketSmith connects AU feeds via Basiq under the CDR, so its Australian connections also run through the regulated pipe — but PocketSmith is not built around the Australian context the way Frollo is.
GST. Frollo: no charge, no GST question. PocketSmith: as an overseas merchant, GST is not separately itemised; the AUD figure shown is what you pay.
Support. Both are light on public support detail. Frollo offers in-app help and email at support@frollo.com.au — expected for a free app. PocketSmith offers priority support on its top Fortune tier.
Australian Fit scores. Frollo earns 5/5 and clears the Australian Fit gate; it is our category Top Pick. PocketSmith earns 3/5 and does not clear the gate — offshore data and a global product hold it back. PocketSmith cannot be named a category Top Pick under our Methodology.
Neither app replaces qualified financial advice. PocketSmith's forecasts are models built on your assumptions, not predictions. Frollo shows you your money; it does not tell you what to do with your super or your mortgage.
Who should buy which
Buy PocketSmith if you are a long-range planner. You want to see cash-flow projections years — even decades — ahead, across many accounts and currencies. You enjoy modelling scenarios and you want analytical control. You are willing to pay, climb a learning curve, and accept offshore data for the deepest forecasting in the category. For that buyer, PocketSmith is a strong four-star pick.
Buy Frollo if you are the everyday Australian who wants present-day clarity now. You want one free app that reads every account safely, sorts your spending, and shows where the money went — without a password handover, a subscription, or offshore storage. That describes most readers.
The verdict
For the typical Australian buyer, Frollo wins. It scores 22/25 to PocketSmith's 18/25. It is free, Australian-built, and stores data primarily onshore through the CDR. It does the job most people actually need — see your money clearly — better, safer, and at no cost.
PocketSmith is not beaten so much as different. It is the best forecasting tool here, and for the planner who lives years ahead, it is worth the price and the learning curve. But forecasting decades out is a specialist want, not a universal one.
Pick PocketSmith to plan the future. Pick Frollo to understand the present. Most Australians need the present first — so most should start with Frollo.
