Octane AI vs Rep AI (2026): Capture Data or Convert the Browser?

By Adam · 30 Jun 2026 · 7 min read
Head-to-head verdict

Our pick: Rep AI. The verdict below says who should buy the other.

Verdict (TL;DR): These two solve different halves of the same problem. Octane AI captures zero-party data upfront through quizzes, then feeds it to Klaviyo. Rep AI converts browsers in the moment with proactive chat. For the typical Australian DTC store, Rep AI is the better first buy. It acts on every visitor, not just quiz-takers. But neither serves Australia well — both bill in USD and store data offshore.

Scores: Octane AI 16/25 (⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good) · Rep AI 15/25 (⭐⭐⭐ Good).

Both reviewed separately by Adam. This comparison does not re-score.

The tension

You run a direct-to-consumer store on Shopify. You want more of your traffic to buy. Two tools promise to help, in opposite ways.

Octane AI asks the shopper a few questions, recommends the right product, and captures their email. You learn what each visitor wants, then market to them later. It works front-of-funnel.

Rep AI watches the shopper instead. When its behavioural model reads exit intent, a chat opens and tries to close the sale before the shopper leaves. It works in the moment.

One captures data. The other converts attention. This guide sorts out which an Australian store should buy first.

Both are Shopify-native. Both bill in USD. Both store data offshore. The real question is where your leak is: are shoppers not choosing, or not staying?

Scores at a glance

Criterion Octane AI Rep AI
Value for Money 3/5 3/5
Ease of Use 4/5 4/5
Feature Depth 3/5 4/5
Australian Fit 2/5 2/5
Reliability & Support 4/5 2/5
Total 16/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 15/25 ⭐⭐⭐

The one-point gap is narrower than it looks. Octane AI wins on reliability. Rep AI wins on feature depth. They tie on everything else. Neither clears the Australian Fit gate.

What it costs in Australia

Both tools bill in USD, so every invoice carries exchange-rate drift. We convert at US$1 ≈ A$1.40 (September 2026) and flag GST below.

Octane AI — tiered, credit-metered. One credit is roughly one quiz engagement; AI features consume extra fractional credits.

Plan Price (USD) Approx AUD (÷1.40) Credits/month
Basic US$50/mo ~A$70/mo 400 (two quizzes)
Plus US$200/mo ~A$280/mo 2,200 (unlimited quizzes)
Enterprise & Unlimited from US$500/mo from ~A$700/mo 7,250+ or unlimited

Overage bills at US$0.10 per credit. Unused credits roll over 30 days. There is a 14-day full-feature trial, no free tier.

Rep AI — tiered by monthly visitors, billed through Shopify every 30 days.

Plan Price (USD) Approx AUD (×1.40) Visitors included
Free to install US$0 — 100/mo
Starter US$99/mo ~A$139/mo up to 10,000
Basic US$199/mo ~A$279/mo up to 25,000
Standard US$350/mo ~A$490/mo up to 50,000

Overage is US$12 per additional 1,000 visitors. Annual billing saves 20%. A 30-day trial runs on paid plans; the free tier is a test environment, not a usable plan.

GST. Both are overseas digital services. GST is not shown in either vendor's headline price. Rep AI bills through Shopify, so your Shopify tax settings may apply GST — check them. Octane AI bills direct in USD; treat it as an imported service and check your invoice. Neither offers AUD-native billing.

Reading the two models. Octane's cost tracks how many quizzes you run. Rep AI's cost tracks how much traffic you have. A small store with heavy traffic pays Rep AI more; a large-catalogue store running one tuned quiz pays Octane less. Model your own volume before committing to either. Both punish an under-buy: Octane through credit overage, Rep AI through per-visitor charges on a promotional spike.

Feature difference

The tools barely overlap. Here is where each earns its fee.

Octane AI Rep AI
Core tactic Product-recommendation quiz Proactive exit-intent chat
When it acts Front-of-funnel, on quiz start In-session, on disengagement
Data captured Zero-party (declared) + email Conversation, email, purchase context
AI features Smart Products, Smart Copy, Image Analyzer LLM chat trained on your catalogue and help centre
Support automation None Order status, returns, shipping; human handoff
Multi-channel Quiz plus email via Klaviyo Web, email, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp
Key integration Klaviyo Klaviyo, Gorgias, Zendesk, Attentive
Depth score 3/5 4/5

Octane's strength is the data, not the sale. It does not close the purchase itself. It captures what the shopper tells you directly — skin type, budget, use case — then hands that zero-party data to Klaviyo for email flows. Its value compounds over weeks, in your list, not on the day.

Rep AI's strength is the moment. It targets the shopper about to leave and tries to convert them then. Rep AI cites a 13% conversion rate from chat interactions in its Shopify App Store merchant summary. Treat that as a vendor-reported figure, not an independent benchmark. It also deflects support tickets, which Octane does not attempt.

That is why Rep AI scores a point higher on depth. It spans sales and support across several channels. Octane goes deep in one direction — quiz-and-capture — and stays silent on the rest.

Australian fit

Neither tool is built for Australia. Both score 2/5 on Australian Fit, and that matters under our framework.

Data residency. Octane AI's privacy policy lists data storage in the US, Canada and other destinations outside the EEA and UK, with no Australian region. Rep AI Technologies is a US company storing data on US servers, with no documented Australian residency. Octane's quiz-and-email data is relatively low-sensitivity. Rep AI's chat logs are more exposed: names, emails, location and purchase context, processed offshore. For a store with obligations under the Australian Privacy Principles — particularly APP 8 on cross-border disclosure — that is worth a conversation with your adviser before deploying Rep AI at scale.

Billing and GST. Both bill in USD with no AUD option. Every invoice carries currency risk. Neither includes GST in its headline price.

Support. Octane AI runs email support on US hours; Enterprise adds a dedicated account manager. Rep AI is US-based with no documented Australian support hours. Octane scores 4/5 on Reliability and Support as an established Shopify app with a mature Klaviyo integration; Rep AI scores 2/5 despite a strong store rating, held down by US-only support and no published SLA.

The Australian Fit gate. Australian Fit is this publication's defining criterion. Under the Australian Fit gate, no tool with Australian Fit below 4/5 can be a category Top Pick. Both sit at 2/5. So neither Octane AI nor Rep AI can be crowned the category winner — that pick goes to an AUD-native option such as Shopify Magic. See our Methodology. This comparison names the better buy between these two, not the category champion.

Who should buy which

Buy Octane AI if:

  • You sell a large or considered catalogue — skincare, supplements, gear — where shoppers get stuck choosing.
  • Your goal is list growth and zero-party data, not just today's sale.
  • You already run Klaviyo and want quiz answers feeding your email flows.
  • You can forecast quiz volume and size a credit plan that earns out.

Buy Rep AI if:

  • You have meaningful traffic and your problem is abandonment, not indecision.
  • You want the tool to act on every visitor, not only quiz-takers.
  • You want support deflection — order status, returns, shipping — handled alongside sales.
  • You can measure attributed chat conversions against a climbing, traffic-based bill.

Skip both if your catalogue is small and your shoppers already know what they want. A quiz nobody needs and a chat nobody triggers both cost money for nothing. Start with Shopify Magic — free, built in, billed in AUD.

The verdict

For the typical Australian DTC store, Rep AI is the better first buy.

The reasoning is about reach. Octane AI only works on shoppers who choose to take a quiz, and only pays off if your catalogue is large enough to confuse them. That is a narrower slice of stores than the marketing suggests. Rep AI acts on every visitor who shows exit intent, which is most stores' actual leak. Its 4/5 feature depth spans sales and support; Octane's 3/5 stops at capture.

Octane AI carries the higher raw score — 16/25 to Rep AI's 15/25 — and it is the more reliable, better-supported app. If you run a considered-purchase catalogue and live in Klaviyo, buy Octane and ignore the rest of this verdict. The data it captures is an asset Rep AI does not build.

But for the median Australian store choosing one conversational tool, Rep AI converts a wider audience with less setup. Run its 30-day trial. Track attributed chat sales against the monthly fee. If the numbers hold, keep it.

Two honest caveats apply to both. The bill is in USD and it grows. Your shoppers' data goes offshore. Neither is a dealbreaker for most merchants, but you should know both before you install.

They are not really rivals. The store that can afford it runs Rep AI to convert the browser today and Octane to capture the data for tomorrow. Forced to pick one, most Australian DTC stores should start with Rep AI.
