Manatal vs Greenhouse: Which ATS Should an Australian Business Buy?
Our pick: Manatal. The verdict below says who should buy the other.
Verdict (TL;DR): These two applicant tracking systems sit at opposite ends of the budget. Manatal (16/25) is the affordable, AI-sourcing ATS for small agencies and lean in-house teams. Greenhouse (19/25) is the structured-hiring heavyweight for scale-ups that want interview rigour and reporting depth. For the typical Australian buyer — a small or growing business hiring a handful of roles a year — Manatal wins on value and is the right starting point. Cross the 150-staff line with a real recruitment function, and Greenhouse earns its premium.

The tension
Most ATS comparisons pit similar tools against each other. This one doesn't. Manatal and Greenhouse are not really competing for the same buyer.
Manatal is the cost-conscious choice. It publishes its prices, starts at roughly AUD $21 per user per month, and puts AI candidate scoring in reach of a three-person team. Greenhouse is the process heavyweight. It hides its pricing behind a sales call, runs into five figures a year, and is built for businesses that hire continuously.
So the real question isn't "which is better." It's "which stage of business are you at." A cost-conscious small recruiter buys Manatal. A process-mature growth company buys Greenhouse. Get that match wrong and you either overpay for rigour you won't use, or outgrow a tool mid-hiring-spree.
In our standalone reviews, Manatal scored 16/25 and Greenhouse 19/25. Three points apart — and note that Manatal's total came down from 18/25 on 21 September 2026, when its Value for Money score was corrected from 5/5 to 3/5 for having neither a free tier nor AUD billing. The gap between them as products is wider still than the numbers suggest, and so is the gap between the businesses they suit.
AUD pricing at a glance
This is the clearest line between the two. Manatal publishes everything. Greenhouse publishes nothing.
| Manatal | Greenhouse | |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Public, per-user, self-serve | Quote-only via sales |
| Entry plan | Professional — US$15/user/mo (annual); US$19 (monthly) ≈ A$21/user/mo | No published entry price |
| Mid plan | Enterprise — US$35/user/mo (annual) ≈ A$49/user/mo | Core / Plus / Pro tiers, dollar amounts not disclosed |
| Top plan | Enterprise Plus — US$55/user/mo (annual) ≈ A$77/user/mo | Enterprise quote |
| Indicative annual cost | ~A$830/yr for a 3-seat Professional team | ~A$9,300–A$15,500/yr for a small business (industry estimate, not a vendor quote) |
| Free trial | 14-day, no card required | None; no self-serve trial |
| Billing currency | USD only | Not disclosed; USD per industry reporting |
AUD conversions at approximately USD 1.00 = AUD 1.40 (September 2026). Prices exclude GST. Both are overseas suppliers, so GST on imported services typically falls under the reverse-charge rules for GST-registered businesses — confirm the treatment for your circumstances with your accountant.
The Manatal figures come straight from its pricing page, verified on the day of writing. The Greenhouse figures are different in kind. Greenhouse lists three plan tiers — Core, Plus, and Pro — but shows no dollar amounts at all. Every figure in the Greenhouse column above is an industry estimate, not a Greenhouse quote. Treat it as a planning range, not a price.
The practical effect: you can sign up for Manatal this afternoon and know exactly what you'll pay. With Greenhouse, you book a demo, sit through a sales process, and wait for a custom quote before you can even compare cost to budget. For a busy operator, that opacity is a real friction point.
Feature difference: sourcing speed vs hiring rigour
Both are proper applicant tracking systems. Both add AI on top of the core workflow. But they optimise for different jobs.
Manatal optimises for sourcing and speed. Its AI Recommendation Engine scores each candidate against a job description and produces a ranked shortlist with a match percentage and a line-by-line breakdown. Its candidate-enrichment tool scans public platforms and auto-populates profiles during candidate creation. The pitch is simple: spend less time digging, get to a first-pass assessment faster. The full AI recommendation engine sits on the Enterprise plan (US$35/user/mo); the entry Professional plan gives you resume parsing and pipeline management without it.
Greenhouse optimises for structured hiring and reporting. Its whole design rests on putting every candidate through the same defined stages, assessed against the same scorecards. Its AI suite — confirmed feature names include automated hiring plans, AI insights, offer forecasting, and key takeaways (interview transcription and summaries) — supports that process rather than replacing it. Resume anonymisation can blur names, photos, and demographic data before review. The reporting layer is where Greenhouse pulls ahead: pipeline drop-off, time-to-hire, source attribution, offer-acceptance rates.
Here is the difference in one line. Manatal helps you find and rank candidates cheaply. Greenhouse helps you run a consistent, auditable, measurable hiring process at scale.
| Capability | Manatal | Greenhouse |
|---|---|---|
| AI candidate scoring | Yes — match score + breakdown (Enterprise plan) | Yes — scorecards + AI-generated attributes |
| Candidate enrichment | Yes — auto-populates from public platforms | Resume anonymisation focus, not enrichment |
| Structured interview framework | Light | Best-in-class — the core design |
| Reporting & analytics depth | Adequate | Best-in-class |
| Setup time | Hours to a day | Guided enterprise implementation |
| Integrations | Solid, SMB-focused | Extensive marketplace (453 partners listed) |
Our review scored Manatal 4/5 on Feature Depth and Greenhouse a full 5/5. That gap is real. But it only matters if you'll use the depth.
Australian fit
Neither tool is built for Australia. Both store data offshore. The difference is one of degree, and the SEEK question.
Data residency — a wash, slightly against both. Both run on US-based AWS infrastructure with no Australian data-residency option. Manatal's security page states plainly that all customer data is stored in the USA; it holds SOC 2 Type II certification. Greenhouse also runs on AWS with no Australian data centre confirmed in its primary sources, and its cross-border compliance documentation references the EU-US framework with no equivalent instrument named for the Australian Privacy Principles. For HR data specifically — resumes, contact details, sometimes sensitive categories — this matters more than in most software. Under APP 8 you remain accountable for personal information sent overseas. Regulated buyers in finance, health, legal, or government should get written confirmation of data handling before signing either contract.
Support — neither has a local team. Manatal runs from Bangkok with chat-and-email support and no Australian office. Greenhouse's public pages don't confirm AU-hours support; we couldn't verify it from primary sources, so confirm it with their sales team if timezone coverage matters to you. On local presence, call it even.
GST — identical treatment. Both are overseas suppliers of imported services. For GST-registered Australian businesses, the reverse-charge rules typically apply. Neither bills in AUD, so both carry exchange-rate exposure. Verify your obligations with your accountant.
SEEK — where Greenhouse earns its half-point. Both connect to SEEK, Australia's dominant job board. Manatal uses its "My Own Contracts" feature so you can post to SEEK with your existing contract, plus a Workforce Australia integration — a complete loop for an SMB. Greenhouse lists "Apply with SEEK" in its integrations marketplace, letting SEEK applications flow into the same pipeline as other sources; the exact posting mechanics weren't fully detailed on the integrations page, so confirm them at the demo stage.
The scores reflect the balance. Manatal earned 2/5 on Australian Fit. Greenhouse earned 3/5 — the SEEK integration and its Fair Work-friendly structured framework lift it one notch above. Neither clears the bar for a local champion.
The Australian Fit gate: A five-star rating or a category Top Pick requires Australian Fit of at least 4/5. Both tools fall short — Manatal at 2/5, Greenhouse at 3/5 — so both are capped at four stars and neither can be named the category Top Pick, regardless of raw score. See our Methodology page for the full framework.
A shared caution worth stating: both tools' AI ranks candidates, but the employer remains responsible for every hiring decision under the Fair Work Act 2009 and state anti-discrimination law. Treat AI recommendations as a tool, not a decision. Document who made the call, and why. Neither product replaces qualified HR or employment-law advice.
Who buys which
Buy Manatal if you are a cost-conscious small recruiter or lean in-house team. You're hiring 5–20 roles a year. You want AI-assisted shortlisting without an enterprise budget or a sales call. You post to SEEK and want one platform for the full pipeline. The 14-day trial lets you prove it before you pay. At roughly A$21 per user per month, the value is genuinely hard to beat. This is most Australian businesses.
Buy Greenhouse if you are a process-mature growth company. You have 150-plus staff, a dedicated recruitment function, and you hire 30-plus people a year. You want interview rigour, scorecards, an audit trail, and reporting depth that Manatal doesn't reach. The setup investment and five-figure cost only make sense at that volume — but at that volume, they make a lot of sense.
The trap to avoid: buying Greenhouse before you've grown into it. The setup overhead and cost-per-seat punish low hiring volume. Equally, don't push Manatal past its ceiling — if you're running 500-plus applications a month with a dedicated recruiter and need deep analytics, you've outgrown it.
The verdict
For the typical Australian buyer, Manatal is the winner. Most businesses reading this hire occasionally, watch their costs, and don't need an enterprise audit trail. Manatal gives them real AI scoring, SEEK posting, and a proper pipeline at a price Greenhouse won't approach. The transparent pricing and free trial seal it.
Greenhouse is the better product — its 19/25 is clear of Manatal's 16/25, and it's best-in-class at structured hiring. But "better product" and "right purchase" aren't the same thing. Greenhouse is the right purchase only once your hiring volume and process maturity justify the cost and the setup.
So: cost-conscious small recruiter, buy Manatal today. Process-mature growth company, run the Greenhouse demo. And whichever you choose, get written confirmation of how applicant data is stored and protected before you sign — the offshore data-residency picture is the one due-diligence step neither tool lets you skip.
Neither can be crowned our category Top Pick — the Australian Fit gate stops both — but for value at the volume most Australian businesses actually hire at, Manatal is the call.
Note: Neither Manatal nor Greenhouse replaces qualified HR or employment-law advice. Australian businesses should consult a Fair Work-specialist adviser or employment lawyer when designing hiring processes, particularly around interview practices, algorithmic candidate scoring, and candidate-data handling.
