Klaviyo vs Mailchimp Australia 2026: Which Email Tool Wins?

By Adam · 30 Jun 2026 · 8 min read
Head-to-head verdict

No single winner. The right choice depends on the job; the verdict below says who should buy which.

Verdict (TL;DR): This is the classic fork for Australian online sellers. Klaviyo is the e-commerce-native platform — deep Shopify data, revenue-attributed flows, predictive AI. Mailchimp is the cheaper, more general all-rounder for newsletters and simple campaigns. A serious Shopify store chasing per-email revenue buys Klaviyo. A small business sending a monthly newsletter buys Mailchimp. Both bill in US dollars, and neither has an Australian data region.

Klaviyo: 17/25 — ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good. Mailchimp: 15/25 — ⭐⭐⭐ Good.

Correction, 21 September 2026:
this comparison said both vendors bill in USD only. Mailchimp bills Australians in AUD — its pricing page defaults to an AUD currency setting. Klaviyo does not: its own /au/ page quotes "USD 20", so an Australian URL is not the same as an Australian price. Mailchimp moves 14/25 → 15/25 and Australian Fit 2/5 → 3/5. The verdict is unchanged. The tension

Every Australian online seller hits this question eventually. You want email and SMS doing real work, and two names dominate the shortlist.

Klaviyo and Mailchimp solve the same problem from opposite ends. Klaviyo was built for e-commerce. It tracks product views, cart additions and purchases, then triggers automated, personalised flows off that behaviour. Mailchimp was built for email broadcasts and grew outward. It sends newsletters beautifully and has bolted on automation and AI over time.

The mistake is treating them as interchangeable. They are not. One is a revenue engine that demands setup. The other is a newsletter tool that does plenty more if you ask. Pick by what you actually need, not by which name you recognise.

Both reviews live on this site already. We are not re-scoring here — see the Klaviyo review and the Mailchimp review for the full workings. This piece settles which one an Australian seller should buy.

What it costs in Australia

Start here, because it decides more than features do. Both platforms bill in US dollars. Neither offers AUD billing. You wear the conversion and any foreign-transaction fee your card adds. We convert at roughly US$1.00 = A$1.40.

Pricing on both is contact-count based and climbs as your list grows. The figures below are the entry tiers.

Plan tier Klaviyo (USD, converted ÷1.40) Mailchimp (native AUD)
Free US$0 A$0
Entry paid Email from US$20/mo (~A$28/mo) Essentials A$18.40/mo (500 contacts)
Full-feature tier Email + Mobile from ~US$35/mo, SMS (~A$49/mo) Standard A$28.31/mo (500 contacts)
High tier Scales by active-profile calculator Premium A$495.36/mo

Mailchimp figures read on its pricing page from an Australian IP on 21 September 2026, currency selector on its AUD default — they are the vendor's own prices, not conversions. Klaviyo's figures are USD, converted at ≈1.40 for context; its /au/ pricing page states amounts as "USD 20" outright.

A few things this table hides.

Klaviyo's free tier covers up to 250 active profiles, 500 emails a month and 150 SMS credits. Mailchimp's free tier is now 250 contacts and 500 sends a month, after a February 2026 cut from 500 contacts and 1,000 sends. Multi-step automations left Mailchimp's free plan in June 2025 — you need at least Essentials for anything past a welcome email.

The AI features that matter on Mailchimp — Write with AI, Creative Assistant, Content Optimizer, predictive segmentation — require the Standard plan, A$28.31/mo for 500 contacts. Below that you get little.

Both scale steeply. Klaviyo charges for every active profile you market to, engaged or dormant. Mailchimp climbs hard by contact tier too — Premium is A$495.36/mo at only 500 contacts. The more your list grows, the more both cost — and the jumps are not gentle.

GST: both are foreign digital service providers. Whether GST is added or remitted depends on each vendor's ABN/GST registration under the ATO's imported-digital-services rules. Check your invoice; don't assume the headline figure is the final figure.

The honest read: at small list sizes Mailchimp is cheaper to start. But price-per-contact is the wrong lens. The real question is price-per-dollar-of-revenue, and that is where Klaviyo's case lives.

Feature diff

Klaviyo Mailchimp
Built for E-commerce, store-first Email broadcasts, general marketing
Behaviour-triggered flows Deepest in the category Mature, but secondary to broadcasts
Shopify integration Tight; store data flows in cleanly Direct integration; less store-native
Predictive AI Next-order-date, CLV, send-time Predictive segmentation, send-time
Revenue attribution Per-flow, dollars recovered Weaker; engagement-led
AI content generation Subject lines, copy assists Write with AI, Creative Assistant
SMS / MMS Native, credit-based Limited
Ease of use 3/5 — rewards setup investment 4/5 — very accessible for beginners
Feature depth 5/5 — the deepest e-commerce email/SMS AI 3/5 — strong email, secondary AI

The split is clear in the scores. Klaviyo takes the full 5/5 on Feature Depth in our review — the deepest behaviour-triggered flows in the category, predictive models that actually drive segmentation, and revenue attribution that closes the loop. Mailchimp sits at 3/5: rock-solid email infrastructure with a competent AI layer added on top, not an AI-first tool.

Mailchimp wins back ground on Ease of Use, scoring 4/5 against Klaviyo's 3/5. Mailchimp's editor and automation builder are genuinely beginner-friendly. Klaviyo is not hard to send a campaign from, but building a multi-step abandoned-cart flow — the thing you are paying for — is a real project. Many Australian stores run Klaviyo through an agency for exactly this reason.

So the trade is plain. Klaviyo gives you more power and asks for more work. Mailchimp gives you less power and asks for almost none.

Australian fit

This is where both stumble, and where they stumble together.

Data residency. Neither has an Australian or APAC data region. Klaviyo's Data Processing Agreement reserves the right to store data "anywhere Klaviyo or its Sub-processors maintain facilities." Mailchimp is US-based and acknowledges in its Data Processing Addendum that it may transfer Australian-protected data offshore, committing to comply with Australian Privacy Law when it does. For retail marketing data this is usually acceptable. For customers with heightened privacy expectations, factor it in.

Billing and GST. Split, as of 21 September 2026: Mailchimp quotes Australians in AUD, Klaviyo quotes USD even on its Australian page. Both leave GST treatment to the invoice.

Support. Klaviyo's free-plan email support runs 60 days, then self-service; paid support is offshore across time zones, with no AU phone line at entry tiers. Mailchimp is weaker still — email-only on Essentials, live chat from Standard, phone on Premium only. That gap shows in the scores: Klaviyo takes 4/5 on Reliability and Support, Mailchimp just 2/5. Both platforms are reliable senders; the difference is how fast you reach a human when a flow misfires on a Friday afternoon AEST.

Compliance. Spam Act 2003 obligations — consent, unsubscribe, sender identification — are the sender's responsibility on both. Each enforces unsubscribe links technically. Neither walks an Australian user through their specific legal duties.

Klaviyo scores 2/5 on Australian Fit, Mailchimp 3/5 since its AUD billing was confirmed. Under our methodology that still matters: a tool needs Australian Fit of at least 4/5 to be named a category Top Pick or wear five stars. Neither qualifies. See the Methodology for the gate. So this verdict names the better buy for the typical Australian seller — not a category winner.

Who buys which

The decision comes down to one question: is email a measured revenue channel for you, or a way to stay in touch?

Buy Klaviyo if you run a serious Shopify store. You sell products, you can attribute revenue to email, and you want flows that recover abandoned carts, win back lapsed customers and cross-sell after purchase. The predictive AI and revenue attribution genuinely move numbers. You will invest setup time, or pay an agency to. If email is a line item you watch in your P&L, Klaviyo pays for itself.

Buy Mailchimp if you send a newsletter. You are a café, a service business, a studio or a shop sending a monthly update and the occasional promotion. You want to get from blank canvas to a formatted email in five minutes without a designer. Mailchimp's Creative Assistant and friendly editor do exactly that. You do not need predictive flows, and you should not pay Klaviyo's complexity tax for power you will not use.

The trap to avoid: buying Klaviyo and half-configuring it. A Klaviyo account left as a glorified newsletter tool is the worst-value option on the table — full price, fraction of the product. If you are not ready to build flows, start cheaper.

The verdict

For the typical Australian online seller — a store with products to sell and revenue to chase — Klaviyo wins. It scores 17/25 to Mailchimp's 15/25, and the gap is exactly where it should be: depth, automation and revenue attribution. The platform earns its USD premium when email is a number you care about.

But the win is conditional, and the condition is real. If you are not selling products through measured flows — if you just want a clean monthly newsletter that goes out on time — Mailchimp is the smarter buy. It is cheaper to start, far easier to run, and you keep the money you would have spent on power you would not have touched.

Same fork, two right answers. Serious store, chasing per-email revenue: Klaviyo. Small business, monthly newsletter: Mailchimp. Mailchimp at least bills you in Australian dollars; Klaviyo still doesn't, and neither solves the offshore-data problem — on that front, Australian sellers are still waiting.
