Gumloop vs Zapier for Australian Businesses 2026: AI-First or App Coverage?

By Adam · 28 Jun 2026 · 9 min read
Head-to-head verdict

Our pick: Zapier. The verdict below says who should buy the other.

If most of your automation is AI work — scraping, summarising, enriching, reasoning — Gumloop is built for it. If most of your automation is moving data between apps, Zapier connects more of them than anything else. That is the whole comparison in two sentences. The hard part for an Australian operator is honestly working out which camp you are actually in, because the answer decides which tool wins, and the wrong choice costs you either capability or money.

Both tools already sit in our reviewed library. Gumloop scores 16/25 (⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good); Zapier scores 20/25 (⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good). Neither solves Australian data residency on a standard plan, and both meter usage in a way that can blow a budget. This piece weighs raw AI capability against ecosystem breadth — and names a winner for the typical Australian buyer.

The real split: native AI versus ecosystem

This is not a "better Zapier" story. The two tools were built around different centres of gravity.

Gumloop starts from AI. Its standout pieces are agents — steps you give a goal and a set of tools, which then work out the sequence themselves — and AI nodes you drop into a workflow alongside everything else. Model access is broad: the current OpenAI GPT-5.x family, Anthropic's Claude 4.x Opus/Sonnet/Haiku, Google Gemini 3.x, plus Grok, DeepSeek, Qwen and more. If your workflow is "scrape these 200 pages, summarise each, enrich the contacts, score the leads," Gumloop treats that as its core job, not an add-on.

Zapier starts from connection. It states it links 9,000+ apps with 66,000+ triggers and actions — a catalogue nothing else in the category matches. Its AI layer is now genuinely deep, not cosmetic: Copilot builds a working Zap from a plain-English sentence, AI Agents run background jobs, AI steps summarise or classify inside any Zap, and Zapier MCP exposes the whole catalogue to external assistants. You also choose the reasoning model — Claude, GPT or Gemini. But the AI sits on top of the ecosystem. The ecosystem is the product.

So the buyer's question is simple. Are your automations mostly LLM steps that happen to touch a few apps? Or mostly app-to-app plumbing that occasionally needs an AI step? Gumloop wins the first. Zapier wins the second.

Pricing in AUD (and two different metering traps)

Both tools bill in USD, and both meter in a way you have to actively manage. The traps are different in shape.

Gumloop publishes three tiers, all USD (gumloop.com/pricing): — Wayback 28 June 2026

  • Free — USD $0/mo. 5,000 credits/month, 1 seat, forum support.
  • Pro — USD $37/mo (about A$52 before any GST), dropping ~20% on annual billing. 20,000+ credits/month, unlimited seats.
  • Enterprise — custom. Adds RBAC, SSO, audit logs, and VPC self-host ("Gumstack").

Unlimited seats at the Pro price is genuinely cheap — most rivals charge per editor, so adding your whole team for the same A$52 is a real advantage. The catch is credits. Every node costs credits, and list or loop steps multiply that cost by every item. A 60-credit enrichment over 333 contacts exhausts the entire 20,000-credit Pro allotment in one run. A single Claude Sonnet step (20 credits) over a 500-row list is 10,000 credits — half your month, gone. There is a release valve: bring your own model API key and AI-node cost drops to 1 credit, but you then pay the model provider directly, in USD, on a second bill you track yourself.

Zapier prices in USD with no AUD list (zapier.com/pricing): — Wayback 28 June 2026

  • Free — USD $0. 100 tasks/month, two-step Zaps only.
  • Professional — from USD $19.99/mo billed annually (about A$28/mo + GST at ~1.40). Scales up as you select more monthly tasks.
  • Team — USD $69/mo annually for 25 users (about A$97/mo + GST).
  • Enterprise — custom. VPC peering, task pooling, a technical account manager.

Zapier meters per task — every successful action step burns one. A five-action Zap that runs 1,000 times is 5,000 tasks, not 1,000. Triggers, filters and Zapier's built-in tools (Tables, Formatter, Paths) don't consume tasks, which softens it, but MCP tool calls cost 2 tasks each. High-frequency, multi-step Zaps escalate fast.

The practical read: Gumloop punishes you for AI volume and big lists; Zapier punishes you for run frequency and step count. Model your busiest workflow on a spreadsheet before you commit to either. The headline price decides nothing.

On the AUD figures here: our conversions at ~1.40, excluding GST unless stated, are not vendor-published prices.

Feature diff: where each pulls ahead

Gumloop wins on AI depth. Agents are first-class, not a marketing label, and the model catalogue is wider than Zapier's three. There is a real developer surface underneath — API, webhooks, an SDK, MCP hosting, custom nodes — so it extends well past the 100+ pre-built nodes. We score its Feature Depth 4/5, held off a 5 only because raw connector breadth trails the incumbents. For scraping, summarising and enrichment as the main event, nothing here touches it.

Zapier wins on coverage and on-ramp. The 9,000+ apps put it in a different league for niche or long-tail software — if your stack has an unusual app, Zapier probably already supports it natively, no raw API plumbing required. Copilot is the gentlest start in the category: describe the automation in a sentence and it assembles the steps. We score its Feature Depth 5/5 and its Ease of Use 5/5 — the highest in our automation library. Gumloop's Ease of Use is 4/5: approachable, but thinking in nodes and credit-cost-per-step is a notch more technical.

In short: Gumloop is deeper where AI is the work; Zapier is broader and easier everywhere else.

Australian fit: where both are weak, and how they differ

This is our category's defining criterion, and both tools score a strict Australian Fit 2/5. But the failures are not identical.

Data residency. Gumloop runs on managed US infrastructure by default, with no published Australian region on standard plans. Its route to onshore data is self-hosting — Enterprise customers can run "Gumstack" inside their own VPC. So onshore data exists, but only at Enterprise tier and custom pricing. Zapier is blunter: it is hosted on AWS in the United States, with no self-host and no Australian region at all. If onshore data is a hard requirement, Gumloop can technically meet it at Enterprise; Zapier cannot meet it on any plan.

The AU stack — the decider for finance-led work. This is where the two converge on a shared weakness with a meaningful gap between them:

  • Xero: Zapier has a native integration. Gumloop has no native Xero node.
  • MYOB: Neither is native. MYOB hasn't built a Zapier integration, and Gumloop's docs show no MYOB node either.
  • HubSpot and Slack: both well covered on either tool.

So for a finance-led automation anchored on Xero, Zapier is clearly ahead — it has the connector Gumloop makes you build by hand. For MYOB-based businesses, both make you do API-grade workarounds.

Billing and GST. Gumloop is USD-only with no GST line and no confirmed ABN tax invoice — you carry the FX and the tax-invoice uncertainty. Zapier is also USD, but is registered under Australia's Simplified GST system and charges GST; GST-registered businesses can add an ABN so GST isn't charged. Neither issues a full ATO-style tax invoice, so confirm input-tax-credit treatment before relying on it. On balance, Zapier's billing is marginally more AU-aware.

Support and reliability. Zapier publishes a 99.9% uptime SLA, carries SOC 2 Type II/SOC 3, and is a dependable incumbent — we score its Reliability & Support 4/5. Gumloop's security posture is serious (SOC 2 Type II, AES-256, a no-training-on-customer-data policy, DPAs with model providers), but support is forum-only on Free and US-timezone-aligned otherwise, with no published AU SLA — 3/5. Neither has an Australian support presence.

Who buys which

Buy Gumloop if your automations are mostly LLM steps — scraping, summarising, enrichment, lead scoring, agentic research — and you run a US-style sales and marketing stack (HubSpot, Slack, Salesforce, Google Workspace). You're comfortable being billed in USD on US infrastructure, you'll bring your own model API key to tame the credit cost, and you've actually budgeted the credits on a spreadsheet. The unlimited seats at A$52 are a genuine bonus for a whole team. Walk in clear-eyed: list-heavy work can drain a month's allotment in one run, and onshore data means an Enterprise contract.

Buy Zapier if your automations are mostly app-to-app plumbing that needs the widest possible coverage, you run on Xero and/or HubSpot, and you want the fastest, easiest path from idea to live automation. It suits low-to-moderate task volumes, or high-value-per-run workflows where the per-task cost is easy to absorb. Skip it if you need onshore data residency, run on MYOB, or have very high-frequency multi-step Zaps where the task meter runs away from you.

The verdict

For the typical Australian buyer — a small-business operator or ops person whose automations are mostly moving data between apps, anchored on Xero, who wants the broadest coverage and the gentlest start — Zapier is the winner. It connects more apps than anything else, it is the easiest tool in the category to get live, its AI layer is now deep enough to do real reasoning, and its Xero-native, Simplified-GST billing makes it the more AU-aware of the two. Our score reflects that: 20/25 to Gumloop's 16/25.

But the win is conditional, and the condition is the whole point of this comparison. If your work is genuinely AI-first — if the LLM steps are the automation, not a garnish on it — Gumloop is the better tool, and the score gap closes or reverses for you specifically. It has deeper agents, wider model choice, and a price that doesn't punish you for adding seats. The buyer who picks Zapier for AI-heavy, list-heavy enrichment work will end up fighting the connector catalogue; the buyer who picks Gumloop for broad app plumbing will end up building integrations by hand.

Neither fixes the thing Australian businesses keep asking about: where your data lives. Both default to the US. Gumloop at least offers an Enterprise self-host route; Zapier offers none. If onshore residency is non-negotiable, look past both — to n8n (self-host) or Microsoft Power Automate (Azure AU regions).

Bottom line: Zapier for the widest coverage and the easiest start — our pick for most Australian operators. Gumloop when the AI is the work, not the wrapper.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gumloop or Zapier better for AI automation?

Gumloop. It is built around AI agents and AI nodes with a wider model catalogue, so for workflows where the LLM steps are the main event — scraping, summarising, enrichment, agentic research — it is the stronger tool. Zapier's AI layer is deep and capable, but it sits on top of an integration platform rather than being the core.

Which connects to more apps, Gumloop or Zapier?

Zapier, by a wide margin. It states it connects 9,000+ apps with 66,000+ triggers and actions. Gumloop offers 100+ pre-built nodes plus custom/MCP nodes and bring-your-own-key models, so it can reach almost anything, but app-to-app coverage is not its strength.

Do Gumloop or Zapier connect to Xero and MYOB?

Zapier has a native Xero integration; Gumloop has no native Xero node. Neither has a native MYOB integration — MYOB hasn't built one for Zapier, and Gumloop's docs show no MYOB node. For Xero-anchored finance automations, Zapier is clearly ahead.

Do either charge in AUD?

No. Both bill in USD. Gumloop has no GST line and no confirmed ABN tax invoice. Zapier is registered under Australia's Simplified GST system, charges GST, and lets GST-registered businesses add an ABN — making it marginally more AU-aware on billing.

Can I keep my data in Australia with either tool?

Not on a standard plan. Both default to US infrastructure. Gumloop offers onshore data via Enterprise self-hosting ("Gumstack" in your own VPC); Zapier offers no self-host and no Australian region on any plan. For strict onshore residency, look at n8n (self-host) or Microsoft Power Automate (Azure AU).
