Freshdesk Freddy AI vs Tidio Lyro for Australians 2026: Full Helpdesk or Smart Chat Widget?
Our pick: Freshdesk Freddy AI. The verdict below says who should buy the other.
Winner: Freshdesk Freddy AI for the typical Australian support team that runs on tickets. It scores 20/25 to Tidio Lyro's 17/25, and it gives you a real helpdesk you won't outgrow. Pick Tidio Lyro if you run a small Shopify or WooCommerce store and just want a capable AI chat widget live today. Freshdesk now clears our Australian Fit gate at 4/5 — corrected 21 September 2026, when its native AUD billing was confirmed; Tidio, at 2/5, does not.

If you're shopping for an AI customer-support agent, these two tools sit on opposite sides of one decision. Freshdesk Freddy AI is an AI layer bolted onto a full ticketing helpdesk. Tidio Lyro is a live-chat-first bot built to answer questions on a small store's website. Both answer customer queries from your own content. Both escalate to a human when they can't. The real choice isn't quality — it's shape. Do you need a support desk, or a smart chat widget? Get that wrong and you either overbuy a ticketing suite or outgrow a chat bot in six months.
We've reviewed both in full. This head-to-head pulls the two verdicts together for a buyer choosing between them. It does not re-score either tool.
At a glance
| Freshdesk Freddy AI | Tidio Lyro | |
|---|---|---|
| Our score | 20/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (AU Fit 4/5) | 17/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (AU Fit 2/5) |
| What it is | Full ticketing helpdesk + AI layer | Live-chat widget + autonomous AI bot |
| Pricing model | Per agent, per month | Platform plan + per-conversation |
| Entry price (AUD approx) | ~$29/agent/mo (Growth, annual) | ~$37/mo (Starter, annual) |
| AI cost | Answer Bot on Growth; Copilot is a paid add-on | Lyro at US$0.50 per conversation |
| Free option | 6-month program, 1–2 agents | Free plan + 50 lifetime Lyro conversations |
| Best for | Growing support teams on tickets | Small Shopify / WooCommerce stores |
| AU office | Yes (Sydney) | No |
| AU data residency | Not publicly confirmed | No (EU / US) |
| Billing currency | USD only | USD only |
Both score four stars. Freshdesk edges ahead on 20/25 against Tidio's 17/25, on feature depth and a clearly stronger Australian footprint — a Sydney office and native AUD billing against neither. But the score gap isn't the story. The shape difference is.
What each one actually is
Freshdesk Freddy AI is the AI layer across the Freshworks suite. Inside Freshdesk it shows up three ways. Freddy Answer Bot is an AI chat widget that deflects inbound queries from your knowledge base. Freddy Copilot sits in the ticket, drafting replies, summarising threads and adjusting tone for human agents. Freddy Insights surfaces trends in your support data. All of it rides on a proper ticketing helpdesk — email, SLAs, routing, reporting, the lot. You're buying a support desk first, AI second.
Tidio Lyro is a conversational AI layer on top of Tidio's live-chat infrastructure. You point it at your FAQ pages and help docs. It answers customer questions in natural language, 24/7, and hands off cleanly to a live agent when it can't. Its Shopify integration is the standout — it reads your catalogue and order data, so it can answer "where's my order?" without extra setup. You're buying a chat widget first, ticketing barely at all.
That's the whole tension. One is a desk. One is a widget.
Pricing — what it costs in AUD
Both vendors bill in USD only. Neither offers AUD-denominated pricing, so every renewal carries currency risk. Conversions below use ~1.40 AUD per USD (September 2026, approximate). Both prices are annual-billing rates; monthly billing is higher.
| Plan / item | Freshdesk Freddy AI | Tidio Lyro |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 6-month program, 1–2 agents | Free plan + 50 lifetime Lyro conversations |
| Entry paid | Growth — US$19/agent/mo (~$27 AUD) | Starter — US$24.17/mo (~$34 AUD) |
| Mid tier | Pro — US$55/agent/mo (~$77 AUD) | Growth — from US$49.17/mo (~$69 AUD) |
| Top tier | Enterprise — US$89/agent/mo (~$125 AUD) | Plus — from US$749/mo (~$1,049 AUD) |
| AI cost | Answer Bot on Growth; Copilot add-on — price not published | Lyro — US$0.50 per conversation (add-ons from US$32.50 / 50) |
The pricing models don't line up, and that matters. Freshdesk charges per agent — a fixed, predictable seat cost that grows with headcount, not query volume. Tidio charges per conversation on top of a platform plan — cheap to start, but it climbs with traffic. A busy store can find Lyro's per-conversation bill overtakes Freshdesk's per-seat bill fast.
Two pricing footnotes decide real budgets. Freddy Copilot — the in-ticket AI most teams actually want — is a paid add-on whose per-agent price Freshworks does not publish. It requires a sales call. So Freshdesk's headline entry price understates the cost of an AI-enabled desk. On the Tidio side, our review worked a realistic example: a store handling 300 conversations a month, Lyro managing 70%, lands near AUD $239/month once you add the Growth plan and conversation charges. Neither tool's sticker price is the whole story.
Feature diff
Ticketing and workflow. No contest. Freshdesk is a full helpdesk — email ticketing, SLA management, collision detection, round-robin routing, custom roles, CSAT surveys, audit logs on higher tiers. Tidio has none of that depth. It's a chat tool with a bot, not a case-management system. If your support runs on tickets, Freshdesk is the only real option here.
AI answering. Both do the core job well. Freddy Answer Bot and Lyro each deflect common queries from your own content and escalate cleanly. Lyro's escalation handoff is genuinely good — the conversation history transfers, so the customer never repeats themselves. Freddy Answer Bot performs well on well-documented questions and falls over on ambiguous ones, which is honest bot behaviour. Both are only as good as the knowledge base you feed them.
Agent assist. Freshdesk wins. Freddy Copilot drafts replies inside the ticket using real context — the customer's words, their history, the product category. For agents handling 30-plus tickets a day, that's material time saved. Lyro has no equivalent agent-side copilot; it's built to answer customers directly, not to sit beside a human writing replies.
E-commerce depth. Tidio wins. Its native Shopify app connects to catalogue, orders and customer data without a manual sync, and the WooCommerce path is nearly as clean. Freshdesk can integrate with a store, but it isn't purpose-built for one. If you're a Shopify merchant, Lyro is up and answering order questions faster.
Actions. A shared limit worth naming. Lyro is primarily a question-answering agent — it can look up order status, but it won't issue refunds or run multi-step workflows without extra configuration. Freshdesk's automation lives in the wider platform rather than in Freddy itself. Neither is an autonomous action-taker out of the box.
Australian fit
This is where both tools lose ground, and where Freshdesk's small edge comes from.
Local presence. Freshworks has a confirmed Sydney office — 135 King St, Sydney NSW 2000, with an Australian phone line. That helps with procurement, compliance conversations and support escalation. Tidio has no Australian presence at all; support is chat-based and async, run from Europe and North America, with no guaranteed cover during AEST business hours. For an operator working peak season, that gap is real.
Data residency. Neither confirms Australian data storage. Freshworks' security page references multiple availability zones but names no Australian region — so AU residency can't be confirmed from public documentation, only via a direct sales conversation. Tidio is clearer, and worse for local buyers: customer conversation data is processed in the EU and potentially the US, never Australia. Under the Privacy Act 1988 (APP 8) you must take reasonable steps over overseas data handling — review the vendor's DPA and disclose the transfer in your privacy policy. If AU data residency is a hard requirement, neither tool clears it on public evidence.
GST. Both are foreign digital suppliers selling into Australia, so both should apply GST under the ATO's imported-services rules. Neither displays GST on its pricing page. Check the actual invoice before assuming it's BAS-compliant or claiming input tax credits.
AUD billing. Neither offers it. You pay in USD, and your monthly cost drifts with the exchange rate.
Freshdesk's 3/5 Australian Fit beats Tidio's 2/5 on one thing: the Sydney office and local support line. On data residency and AUD billing, they're equally weak. Both sit below our Australian Fit gate, which requires 4/5 for a category Top Pick — so neither can be crowned the category winner, regardless of raw score. See our Methodology.
Who buys which
Buy Freshdesk Freddy AI if you run on tickets. If your support is email-led, if you have more than a couple of agents, if you need SLAs, routing and reporting, or if you expect to scale a support team — Freshdesk is the pick. It's a real helpdesk you won't outgrow, the entry price is competitive, and the free evaluation window is genuine. Just get Freddy Copilot pricing in writing first, because the AI you actually want isn't in the headline number.
Buy Tidio Lyro if you run a small store. If you're a solo operator or micro-business on Shopify or WooCommerce, with under ~500 conversations a month and a clean FAQ ready to feed the bot — Lyro gets an AI agent live faster than anything else in this category. It's the simplest setup we've tested, and the Shopify integration is the best here. Just watch the per-conversation bill as you grow, and document the offshore data storage in your privacy policy.
The typical Australian buyer — a growing small business that answers customers through a shared inbox and is starting to feel the strain — is better served by Freshdesk. It scores higher (20/25 to 17/25), it gives you ticketing structure you'll need within a year, and it has a local office to call. Tidio is the sharper tool for one specific job — a Shopify store's chat widget — but it's a narrower buy that a growing team outgrows.
Winner: Freshdesk Freddy AI, for the ticket-led support team that is most of this market. Tidio Lyro wins the narrower e-commerce-chat lane. Choose by the shape of your support, not the sticker price.
FAQ
Freshdesk Freddy AI or Tidio Lyro — which is better for Australians?
Freshdesk, for most. It scores 20/25 to Tidio's 17/25, gives you a full ticketing helpdesk, and has a Sydney office. Tidio wins only for small Shopify or WooCommerce stores that want a fast, chat-first AI widget.
Which is cheaper?
At the entry level they're close — Freshdesk Growth is ~$29 AUD/agent/month and Tidio Starter ~$37 AUD/month, both annual, both USD-billed. But the models differ. Freshdesk charges per agent; Tidio adds US$0.50 per conversation. High query volume makes Tidio climb faster; more agents makes Freshdesk climb faster.
Does either store data in Australia?
Neither confirms it. Freshworks names no Australian region in public docs; Tidio processes data in the EU and possibly the US. If AU data residency is a hard requirement, get it in writing from Freshworks, or look at an AU-hosted alternative.
Do they bill in AUD?
No. Both bill in USD only, so your cost drifts with the exchange rate. Neither shows GST on its pricing page — check your actual invoice before claiming input tax credits.
Which should a Shopify store choose?
Tidio Lyro. Its native Shopify app reads your catalogue and order data, so it can answer order and returns questions with minimal setup. Freshdesk can integrate with a store but isn't purpose-built for one.

A handful of items can only be settled through direct vendor engagement and are stated as such in the body: the Freddy Copilot per-agent price, named Australian data residency for either vendor, and the exact GST line on an AUD-equivalent invoice.
