Claude Sonnet 4.6 lands — same price, better default for Australian users (2026)

By Adam · 17 Feb 2026 · 3 min read

Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

What changed

Anthropic has released Claude Sonnet 4.6, a full upgrade to the model that most Claude users already rely on. It improves across the board: coding, computer use, long-context reasoning, agent planning, knowledge work and design.

The numbers are concrete. In Anthropic's testing, developers preferred Sonnet 4.6 over the previous Sonnet 4.5 roughly 70% of the time on coding tasks. The model also gains a 1M-token context window, in beta — enough to hold an entire codebase, a long contract, or dozens of research papers in a single request.

The most important detail is the price tag: there isn't a new one. Sonnet 4.6 costs the same as Sonnet 4.5, at US$3 per million input tokens and US$15 per million output tokens (roughly A$4 and A$21 per million, ex-GST, at ~1.40 USD).

It is now the default model on the Free and Pro plans, and in Claude Cowork. Most users get the upgrade automatically.

What it means for Australians

This is the rare upgrade that asks nothing of you. If you use Claude on a Free or Pro plan, your default model just got better — for the same money. There is no new tier to buy and no migration to manage.

The 1M-token context (beta) is the standout for Australian professionals. A property lawyer can feed in a full lease pack. An accountant can drop in a year of board minutes. A marketer can hand over an entire brand archive and ask for a consistent rewrite. Long documents that once needed chopping up now fit in one go.

Data residency is unchanged. Anthropic still processes prompts on US infrastructure, so treat client data with the same care you did last week. For Legal, Finance and HR work, Claude assists — it does not replace qualified professional advice.

Does it change our recommendation

No — it strengthens it. Claude was already a top pick among AI assistants for Australians, and Sonnet 4.6 widens the gap on reasoning and long-document work without touching the price. The case for trying the free tier is now stronger, not weaker.

We score every tool against the same five criteria, including Australian Fit. See our Methodology for how that works.
