AI in March 2026: Anthropic lands in Sydney, ChatGPT brings ads
By Adam · Part of our monthly AI recap series, looking back at March 2026.
March was the month Australia got real attention from the AI majors — some of it welcome, some of it worth watching.
A frontier lab put down roots here. Anthropic opened a Sydney office — its fourth in the Asia-Pacific — appointed a GM for Australia and New Zealand, and signed an AI-safety MOU with the federal government. Australia ranks fourth globally for Claude usage per capita. It's the clearest sign yet that local demand is being taken seriously.
The other side of the coin: ads. ChatGPT launched "Sponsored Tips" in Australia on its Free and Go tiers — ahead of most markets. Plus and above stay ad-free, which made the paid tier a clearer value proposition overnight.
Multi-vendor model choice arrived in the office. Microsoft's Copilot Wave 3 made Claude selectable alongside OpenAI models inside Microsoft 365 — the first major productivity suite to offer Australians a real choice of engine. Microsoft also extended its Copilot Business promo to 30 June.
Also worth knowing: OpenAI shipped GPT-5.4, Mistral released the self-hostable Small 4, and Notion added Tokyo/Seoul data residency — but still nothing in Australia.
What it meant for you: more local presence and more choice, but if you're on free ChatGPT, expect ads. For business users, the Copilot model choice is a genuine reason to re-evaluate.
