AI in June 2026: Gemini cuts AU prices, Anthropic ships Fable 5

By Adam · Part of our monthly AI recap series, looking back at June 2026 (to date).

June delivered the rarest kind of AI news for Australians: prices falling, in AUD, with no asterisk.

Gemini got cheaper — a lot cheaper. Google overhauled its Australian pricing: AI Plus dropped from A$12.49 to A$7.99/month, a 36% cut and the lowest paid entry point of any major assistant here. The single A$409.99 AI Ultra tier was split into A$149.99 and A$329.99 options, and the free tier moved to Gemini 3.5 Flash. AI Pro held at A$32.99.

The frontier moved again. Anthropic released Claude Fable 5, a new Mythos-class model and its most powerful public release — free on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise for an introductory window before moving to usage credits.

Billing models bedded in. GitHub Copilot's usage-based AI Credits billing took effect on 1 June, and Windsurf relaunched as Devin Desktop under Cognition — one subscription now spanning the desktop editor and the cloud agent.

On the horizon: Microsoft's M365 Copilot Business promo ends 30 June, with AU$26.91/user/month reverting to AU$31.40. (Update, 1 Sep 2026: the rise didn't land — Microsoft re-ran the AU$26.91 discount for a new 1 July–31 December 2026 window. Source)

What it meant for you: if you've been weighing Gemini, this is the moment — A$7.99/month is hard to argue with. And if you run Copilot for Business, lock in your understanding of the new pricing before 30 June.
