AI in January 2026: the month Australia got a price tag
Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow ~10% on top (Methodology).

January set the tone for the whole year: this was the month the big assistants started pricing and shipping for Australians, not around us.
The headline — cheaper paid tiers reached Australia. ChatGPT Go launched globally at USD$8/month, giving Australians a sub-AU$15 paid ChatGPT for the first time. Around the same time, Google AI Plus reached Australia in native AUD at A$12.99/month including GST — a genuine budget tier with Gemini 3 Pro and 200GB of storage. After years of USD-only billing, two of the three biggest assistants now had an affordable, locally-priced entry point.
Agentic tools arrived. Anthropic opened Claude Cowork in research preview, pointing its coding engine at everyday knowledge work. Replit shipped Mobile Apps — describe an app in plain English, get a published iOS build. Both were early signs of the "AI that does things" shift that would define the next five months.
Also worth knowing: ChatGPT Health launched with early access including Australia, and Google's Pomelli Animate landed with Australia in its first wave of regions.
What it meant for you: if cost had been your reason to stay on free AI, January removed it. A capable paid assistant was suddenly under A$15/month.
