> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Lyro is the simplest AI chatbot we've tested. You connect it to your website, point it at your content, and it handles customer queries autonomously — no coding, no consultant, no complicated onboarding. For small Australian e-commerce businesses and Shopify merchants who want a chatbot up and running before lunch, it is genuinely impressive. The limitations are real though: EU data storage is a concern under Australian privacy law, there is no local office, and per-conversation pricing scales poorly once your volume grows. A strong tool for the right operator. Not a fit for everyone.

## What Tidio Lyro actually does

Tidio is a live chat and customer support platform founded in Poland in 2013\. It is used by over 300,000 businesses globally, with particular traction in e-commerce and Shopify stores.

Lyro is Tidio's conversational AI layer. It sits on top of Tidio's live chat infrastructure and handles customer queries autonomously — without a human agent in the loop. You feed it your FAQ pages, help docs, or website content. It learns from that material and answers customer questions in natural language, 24/7.

The workflow is straightforward. A visitor opens the chat widget. Lyro greets them, understands their question, and responds using the content you've provided. If it cannot answer — or if the customer asks to speak with a person — it escalates to a live agent. The handoff is clean. The conversation history transfers. The agent picks up without asking the customer to repeat themselves.

That handoff quality is underrated. Many AI chatbots botch the escalation. Lyro handles it well.

## Pricing — and what it actually costs in AUD

Tidio's pricing structure has two components: the platform plan and the Lyro conversation volume. Understanding this split is important before you sign up.

**Platform plans (USD, approximate AUD at 1.40 exchange rate):**

| Plan | USD/month | AUD/month (approx) |
| ------- | -------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------ |
| Free | $0 | $0 |
| Starter | $24.17 | \~$34 |
| Growth | from $49.17 | from \~$69 |
| Plus | **$300/mo** *(was from $749 — see the 23 Sep 2026 note)* | \~A$421 |

*Pricing sourced from tidio.com/pricing, June 2026\. Annual billing; monthly billing is higher.*

**Lyro conversations:** Lyro charges per conversation, not per resolution. This is a key distinction. Intercom Fin charges \~USD $0.99 per *resolved* query. Tidio Lyro charges per *conversation started* — regardless of outcome. The per-conversation rate is USD $0.50, available as monthly add-ons starting at $32.50 for 50 conversations.

The Free plan includes 50 Lyro conversations per account (a lifetime allocation for testing, not a monthly reset). After that, additional conversations are purchased as paid add-ons.

**What this means in practice for an Australian SMB:**

If your store handles 300 customer conversations per month and Lyro manages 70% of them, you're looking at roughly 210 Lyro conversations. At USD $0.50 per conversation, that's USD $105 — approximately AUD $147\. Add the Growth plan at \~AUD $76, and your monthly outlay is around **AUD $239 per month**.

That is not outrageous for what you get. But it can surprise businesses that start on the free tier and see volume grow. Budget for it.

**GST note:** Tidio LLC is a US-registered company (San Francisco, CA) with a Polish entity (Tidio Poland Sp. z o.o., Szczecin). It sells digital services to Australian businesses. Under Australian tax law, foreign digital service providers supplying to Australia are generally required to collect and remit GST. Tidio's pricing page does not display any Australian GST treatment, and the company publishes no AU-specific tax statement — so whether GST appears on, and is claimable from, your invoice is not something you can confirm from public sources. Check your actual Tidio invoice (or ask your accountant) before claiming input tax credits.

## Setup — genuinely the easiest we've tested

This is where Lyro earns its five stars for ease of use.

Setup takes three steps. First, connect Tidio to your website — via a Shopify app, a WordPress plugin, or a single JavaScript snippet. Second, point Lyro at your content — paste in URLs, upload docs, or connect your FAQ pages. Third, toggle Lyro on.

That is it. No training pipeline. No developer required. No consulting engagement. Most businesses will have a working chatbot in under an hour.

The Shopify integration is particularly polished. Tidio has a native Shopify app with 1,251 reviews and a 4.7-star rating on the Shopify App Store (verified June 2026). It connects to your product catalogue, order management, and customer data without a manual sync. Lyro can answer questions like "where is my order?" and "what's your return policy?" without any additional setup.

For a solo operator running a Shopify store in Brisbane or a small team in Melbourne managing a few hundred daily visitors, this simplicity is genuinely valuable.

---

## Feature depth — solid, but not enterprise-grade

Lyro handles the fundamentals well. It understands natural language. It answers multi-turn questions. It escalates gracefully. It learns from your content without manual rule-building.

What it does not do:

- **Execute actions autonomously.** Lyro is primarily a question-answering agent. It can look up order status via Shopify integration, but it cannot issue refunds, modify orders, or run multi-step workflows without additional configuration. Tools like Intercom Fin offer deeper process execution.
- **Handle complex enterprise workflows.** No role-based access controls, no multi-team routing logic, no advanced analytics dashboard.
- **Integrate deeply with non-Shopify stacks.** Lyro works well with Shopify and WooCommerce. Tidio lists integrations with Zendesk, Intercom, Salesforce, and 20+ platforms, but integration depth varies.
- **Support voice or omnichannel.** Lyro is chat-only. No voice, no phone, no social media direct messages.

For a small e-commerce business, none of these limitations matter. For a growing business with a support team of five or more, they will start to bite.

---

## Australian fit — the honest assessment

This is where Tidio's score falls, and you should know why before you commit.

**Data residency:** Tidio has a dual corporate structure. The Polish entity (Tidio Poland Sp. z o.o., Szczecin) primarily processes data on EEA servers. However, Tidio LLC — the US entity at 1301 Sansome Street, San Francisco — is the contracting party for most accounts, and its privacy policy states that "some of your data may be transferred from the EEA and/or the United Kingdom and processed in the United States." In practice, your customer conversation data may be processed in both the EU and the US. Neither location is Australia.

This matters. The Australian Privacy Act 1988 (APP 8) requires businesses to take reasonable steps to ensure overseas recipients handle personal information in a way consistent with Australian Privacy Principles. "Reasonable steps" is not defined prescriptively, but storing customer data with a European provider in EU servers does not automatically breach the Privacy Act — Tidio is GDPR-compliant, which sets a high bar. However, you should:

1. Review Tidio's Data Processing Agreement (DPA) before signing up.
2. Update your privacy policy to disclose overseas data transfers.
3. Seek legal advice if you handle sensitive personal information (health, financial, etc.).

Small Shopify stores asking "where's my order?" are unlikely to trigger serious privacy risk. The concern scales with the sensitivity of queries your chatbot handles.

**No Australian office:** Tidio has no Australian presence. Support is chat-based and async. Response times are not guaranteed during AEST business hours — Tidio's support team operates from Europe and North America. For an operator running a busy store during peak season, async-only support is a risk.

**AUD pricing:** Tidio does not offer AUD-denominated pricing. You pay in USD. Your monthly cost fluctuates with the exchange rate. There is no Australian billing entity, so there is no AUD invoice — this can complicate accounting.

**Australian-aware outputs:** Lyro's conversational responses are in English but not localised for Australian spelling or conventions. If your knowledge base uses Australian English, Lyro will reflect that. If your content uses US spelling, so will the chatbot.

## Who Tidio Lyro is best for

**Strong fit:** \- Small Australian Shopify or WooCommerce merchants wanting 24/7 chat coverage without hiring - Solo operators or micro-businesses with under 500 customer conversations per month - Businesses with a clear FAQ and help doc library ready to feed Lyro - Teams with no developer resources — setup requires none

**Weak fit:** \- Businesses handling sensitive personal data where overseas storage is a concern - High-volume e-commerce stores (per-conversation pricing adds up fast above 500 conversations/month) - Businesses requiring AUD invoicing or local support - Growing customer service teams that need agent routing, SLAs, and workflow automation

*Prices as of September 2026, converted at US$1 ≈ A$1.40 (approx) where the vendor bills in USD. Sources: Tidio (tidio.com/pricing — Starter US$24.17/mo annual), Intercom (intercom.com/pricing — Essential US$29/seat/mo annual; Fin US$0.99 per resolution; regional AU data hosting on Advanced/Expert annual plans), Freshdesk (freshworks.com/freshdesk/pricing — Growth US$19/agent/mo annual), Zoho Desk (zoho.com/desk/pricing.html?currency=AUD — AUD-native, GST-inclusive, Sydney + Melbourne data centres). All checked 8 June 2026.*

Intercom Fin is more powerful but more expensive once you add per-resolution charges, and it charges per resolved query rather than per conversation. For a store with a 60% resolution rate, Intercom's per-resolution model can work out cheaper at high volume. At low volume, Lyro wins on cost. Note that Intercom — unlike Tidio — does offer an Australian data-hosting region (AWS Sydney), though only on its Advanced and Expert annual plans.

Freshdesk and Zoho Desk offer better Australian support presence and more flexible data arrangements. Neither matches Lyro's ease of setup or Shopify integration quality.

## Score breakdown

| Criterion | Score | Notes |
| --------------------- | --------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Value for Money | 4/5 | Free tier is genuinely useful. Starter plan at \~AUD $37/month (annual billing) is fair. Per-conversation pricing at USD $0.50 is transparent but scales. |
| Ease of Use | 5/5 | Best onboarding of any chatbot tool we've reviewed. Up and running in under an hour. |
| Feature Depth | 3/5 | Handles the basics extremely well. Falls short on action execution, enterprise workflows, and omnichannel. |
| Australian Fit | 2/5 | EU/US data storage, no AU office, USD-only billing, no AUD pricing. Functional but not local. |
| Reliability & Support | 3/5 | Platform is stable and well-regarded. Async-only support and no AU presence reduce the score. |
| **Total** | **17/25** | **⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good** |

**Australian Fit gate note:** Australian Fit score is 2/5\. Under the publication's methodology, a score of 17/25 would normally qualify for ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good — and that is the correct rating here, as the gate only restricts ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent (which requires AU Fit ≥ 4/5). Tidio Lyro earns four stars. It cannot earn five while its Australian data and support story remains this thin.

## The verdict

Tidio Lyro is the most accessible AI chatbot we have tested. If you run a Shopify store in Australia and you want a chatbot that answers customer questions overnight and on weekends — without a developer, without a consultant, and without a six-week implementation — Lyro gets you there faster than anything else in this category.

The Australian limitations are real and you should go in clear-eyed. Your customer data lives in the EU or US. Support is async. Billing is in USD. These are not dealbreakers for most small e-commerce operators, but they are factors you should document in your privacy policy and factor into your accounting.

At \~AUD $37/month for Starter (annual billing) plus a modest conversation budget, Tidio Lyro is an affordable, capable, and fast entry point into AI-powered customer service. For the right operator — small, e-commerce-focused, Shopify-native — it is a very good choice.

**Recommended for:** Small Australian e-commerce businesses and Shopify merchants wanting fast, low-friction AI chat coverage.

**Not recommended for:** Businesses with sensitive data handling requirements, high conversation volumes, or a need for local support.

Update history
- **24 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 CORRECTION — Plus fell from US$749 to US$300.** Verified 24 September 2026 in a browser on an Australian connection. Tidio's page now reads *“Plus — get premium features, priority support, and advanced team management* *for $300/mo* *”*, against the **from $749** this review recorded — a **60% cut**, or about **A$421** rather than A$1,049\. **Free ($0), Starter ($24.17/mo, 100 billable conversations) and Growth (from $49.17/mo, from 250 conversations) are all unchanged.** Starter and Growth now also carry a **7-day free trial**. Currency confirmed: the page states **USD** and there is no AUD, so `aud_native: false` stands and this closes Tidio's row on the AUD claim queue. Converted at US$1 = A$1.4045 (Frankfurter/ECB, 18 September 2026), ex-GST per our GST rule. **No score change:** Value for Money 4/5 already rested on the free tier and Starter being fair, and a cheaper top tier does not change either.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Tidio Lyro available in Australia?

Yes. Tidio works for Australian businesses and integrates natively with Shopify and WooCommerce. The catch is structural, not access-based: there's no Australian office, support is async on European and North American hours, and your data is stored offshore.

### Does Tidio charge in AUD?

No. Tidio bills in USD only, with no AUD pricing or Australian billing entity, so your monthly cost drifts with the exchange rate. GST treatment isn't shown on the pricing page — check your actual invoice or ask your accountant before claiming input tax credits.

### Is there a free plan?

Yes. The Free plan includes 50 Lyro conversations — a lifetime allocation for testing, not a monthly reset. After that, conversations cost USD $0.50 each as add-ons. Paid platform plans start at Starter, around A$37/month on annual billing.

### Where is my customer data stored?

In the EU and potentially the US — never Australia. Under the Privacy Act (APP 8) you must take reasonable steps over overseas data handling. Review Tidio's DPA, disclose the transfer in your privacy policy, and seek advice if you handle sensitive personal information.

### Tidio Lyro vs Intercom Fin — which is better for Australians?

Lyro is cheaper at low volume and easier to set up, but stores data in the EU/US. Intercom Fin offers AWS Sydney hosting (Advanced/Expert annual plans) and a Sydney office, and charges per resolution. For data residency, Intercom wins; for fast, low-cost Shopify chat, Lyro wins.
