We have reviewed and scored 662 AI tools for this market. Every one carries a hand-scored Australian Fit mark out of five: AUD pricing, data residency, GST clarity, local support, Australian-aware output. **439 of them — 66% — score 2 out of 5 or lower.** Only 126, or 19%, clear the 4-out-of-5 bar our five-star rating demands.

That is the number we will defend, because a person scored it against a published rubric on every single review.

The currency figure points the same way and is less exact. **560 of those 662 tools — 85% — have no Australian dollar price we could find.** That count is partly inferred from review text rather than set by hand. We found and fixed a defect in that inference this week. It is still approximate by a few percentage points. Section four shows the working, including what we got wrong.

The interesting part is not either headline. It is 10% and 90%.

Ninety per cent of the AgTech tools we have reviewed bill Australians in Australian dollars. Ten per cent of the Video AI tools score above 2 on Australian Fit. Same directory, same method, same week. The distance between those two ends is the whole story, and it is not really about currency at all.

## The split: local categories bill locally

Sort our 30 categories by either measure and the same pattern falls out. The categories that treat Australians properly are the categories that have Australian vendors in them. Agriculture. Property. Accounting. Cybersecurity. Recruitment.

The categories that don't are the globally traded software categories — video, audio, writing, meeting notes, marketing. Those are sold from San Francisco to everyone at once. Australia is a rounding error in the addressable market.

Here are the rows that carry the argument. We have trimmed 30 categories to 14 rather than dump the full table. The middle of the distribution is noise. The two ends are the finding. "Clears the gate" means the tool scored 4 or 5 on Australian Fit, the bar the Australian Fit gate sets for five stars or a category Top Pick.

Look at Video AI. Sixty tools reviewed, the largest category we cover. Not one of them publishes an Australian dollar price. Fifty-seven of the sixty score 2 out of 5 or worse on Australian Fit. Writing & Content AI, Audio and Presentation tools produce **zero** tools between them that clear the gate. The slide-maker we do send Australians to, [Canva Magic Studio](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/canva-magic-studio-review-australia-2026/), is filed under Design & Creative.

Then look at the other end. [DataFarming](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-datafarming-australia-2026/) is a Toowoomba company charging A$595 a year, with GST stated explicitly on its per-hectare rates — 22/25, Australian Fit 5/5\. [Archistar](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-archistar-australia-2026/) publishes every tier in AUD inclusive of GST and supports customers from Sydney — 22/25, Australian Fit 5/5\. [SiteMinder](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-siteminder-australia-2026/) leads its category globally and is an ASX-listed Sydney company — 22/25, Australian Fit 5/5\. [Hnry](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-hnry-australia-2026/) charges 1% of income capped at A$1,500 +GST, lodges with the ATO, and scores 24/25.

None of those is a coincidence either. Local vendors bill locally because they have no other option. Their customers are here.

## Why it matters at the checkout

A USD price is not just a price with a conversion sum attached. It costs you three specific things.

**The FX margin.** You do not get the mid-market rate. You get your card issuer's rate plus a foreign-transaction fee, and the number moves month to month. Our [VibeCode review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-vibecode-australia-2026/) worked the exact case. The US$19.99 web plan looked cheaper than the A$29.99 App Store price until the fee and FX movement went on top.

**The GST position, which you work out yourself.** The ATO is explicit. A GST-registered Australian business "shouldn't be charged GST" on imported services and digital products. But only if you give the supplier your ABN *and* state that you are registered. A business that is not GST-registered pays the GST. That is why we publish USD conversions ex-GST and say so, rather than quietly adding 10% to every number — see our [Methodology](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/). This is general information, not tax advice. Check your own position with your accountant.

**The tax invoice.** Overseas suppliers in the ATO's simplified GST system are not given an ABN. They get an ATO Reference Number instead. The ATO is blunt about what follows: "Unless a supplier has an ABN, they cannot issue a valid tax invoice to you." Your bookkeeper then has a line item that does not behave like the others. For one subscription that is an annoyance. Across a stack of eleven tools it is an afternoon.

None of this is catastrophic. All of it is friction an Australian pays and an American does not.

## Billing in AUD is not the same as being good for Australians

This is where the number needs an honest caveat, and our own data supplies one.

A real AUD price does not save a bad tool. [VibeCode](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-vibecode-australia-2026/) bills through the Australian App Store at A$29.99 a month with GST already included. That is native AUD pricing, the cleanest kind. Our own currency flag still misses it, which is the next section's problem. It scores **13/25**, with Australian Fit 2/5\. It is US-hosted, with no Australian data residency and no local support. Currency was the one thing it got right.

The reverse happens too. [Frollo](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-frollo-australia-2026/) scores 22/25 with Australian Fit 5/5 and counts as *not* billing in AUD — because it is free. A North Sydney company running on the Consumer Data Right, and our currency flag reads it as a gap. Free tools and local-first tools that never publish a price list push our count the wrong way, and they push it in Australia's favour.

So the 85% measures one thing: whether a vendor thought to publish a price in our currency. It is a proxy for attention, not a verdict. The verdict is the Australian Fit score, and that one is worse.

One number does come out better. Eighteen of our 27 Editor's Choice picks show AUD billing. That figure comes from the same partly-inferred field as the 85%, so treat it as a tendency rather than a count. When we pick a winner on the merits, we usually land on a tool that bothered.

## How we counted — and what we got wrong

The corpus is **662 reviewed AI tools carrying a full 5×5 score**, across 30 categories, from the directory manifest regenerated **20 September 2026**. Our directory holds 680 entries. The other 18 have not been reviewed, so they carry no currency value and are excluded. Counting a tool nobody has checked as "no AUD billing" would assert a fact we never established.

Australian Fit is one of five criteria, each scored out of 5, defined on our [Methodology](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/) page. It is set by hand on every review. There is no inference in the 439 figure, and no inference in the 126.

The currency field is a different matter, and last week it was broken.

**What was wrong.** Where a review does not set the flag explicitly, the manifest infers it from the review text. That inference searched for the phrase "native AUD" and returned true on a match, before the test for USD-only billing ever ran. Our own house boilerplate contains that phrase — in the sentence saying a tool is *not* shown as a native AUD invoice. So the check fired hardest on exactly the tools it was meant to exclude. The error was not random noise. It was systematic, and it ran in the vendors' favour.

**What it cost.** Measured against the 399 reviews that set the flag by hand, the old rule was **59.6% accurate, with 156 false positives**. It over-counted AUD billing badly. The published figure was 450 of 664, or 68%.

**The fix and the new accuracy.** The order of the tests was corrected so the USD-only check runs first, and the phrase match was tightened. Against the same 399 hand-set reviews, the rebuilt rule scores **90.5% accurate, with 28 false positives**. The manifest was regenerated on the fixed field. The headline moved from 68% to 85%. Every figure in this piece is from the rebuilt file.

**What is still wrong.** Two things, and they run in opposite directions.

The residual inference still produces 28 false positives against 10 misses on the validation set. That net tilts towards over-counting AUD billing, which means the true gap is more likely above 85% than below it. But you can find errors both ways in the shipped file without our help. Eleven tools whose own price record reads "billed in AUD" are still counted as non-AUD. ChatGPT and Claude Code are two of them, and both are bought here in volume. Seven tools counted as AUD-billing carry a price record stating they bill in US dollars.

Treat 85% as approximate to a few percentage points either way. Treat 66% as exact, because a person set every one of those scores.

**This is our corpus, not the market.** We review the tools Australians ask about, in the categories we cover. It is the largest scored set of AI tools built for this market that we know of. It is still a sample, and we chose it.

We are publishing the defect rather than quietly restating the number. A publication whose wedge is verification does not get to skip the part where its own data was wrong.

## The verdict

Australians are not a market to most AI vendors. They are a postcode on a payment form.

The fix is not a campaign, because nobody is listening. The fix is a buying habit. Where a category has a local vendor — accounting, property, agriculture, health, recruitment — check it first. It will almost certainly bill in your currency, state its GST position, and answer the phone in your time zone.

Where a category has no local vendor, accept that you are buying a US product on US terms, and price it that way. Convert ex-GST, budget the FX margin, and check the tax invoice before you file it.

And when a global vendor does publish an AUD price, notice it. It means someone in that company looked at the map.

We have scored all 662 of these tools on Australian Fit, and we will keep doing it.
