## Verdict

Tableau is the gold standard for visual analytics. There is no serious argument about that. Its AI features — Tableau Pulse for proactive metric monitoring, Tableau Agent for natural language queries, and the new Agentforce Tableau suite — are genuinely useful and better integrated than most competitors. Salesforce runs Australian-region cloud infrastructure (ap-southeast-2, Sydney), which matters for data-conscious Australian organisations.

The problem is the price, and what the price does not buy. Tableau Cloud starts at **AU$21 per user per month** for the Standard edition, billed annually — real Australian dollars, published by Tableau. Enterprise is **AU$49**. Neither includes **Tableau Agent**, the natural-language assistant this review is largely about. Agent requires **Tableau Cloud+**, and Cloud+ is quote-only. Worse for budgeting: every deployment must include at least one Creator licence, and Tableau publishes no price for a Creator. So you cannot cost even the smallest Tableau Cloud rollout from the pricing page.

**For large Australian businesses, finance teams, and professional data teams:** Tableau is the right tool, and the AU data residency story is genuinely strong. Score: 18/25 — ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good.

**For Australian SMBs, startups, or anyone not already in the Salesforce ecosystem:** Power BI Copilot costs a fraction of the price and does most of what you need. Looker Studio is free. Tableau is overkill and the setup cost will sting.

## What Is Tableau AI?

Tableau is a data visualisation and business intelligence platform owned by Salesforce since 2019\. It connects to hundreds of data sources — spreadsheets, databases, Salesforce CRM, cloud services — and turns raw data into interactive dashboards and charts.

The "Tableau AI" umbrella covers three distinct things:

**1\. Tableau Pulse** — proactive AI-driven metric monitoring. Set up a metric (say, "weekly sales in NSW"), and Pulse automatically monitors it and sends you natural language summaries in Slack, Teams, or email. Instead of checking a dashboard, you receive a digest that says "Your NSW sales are up 14% week-on-week, driven by the Sydney region — unit volume is flat but average order value has increased." You can ask follow-up questions in plain English. Pulse is included in all Tableau Cloud editions, including Standard at AU$21/user/month.

**2\. Tableau Agent** — an AI assistant built into the Tableau authoring environment. Analysts use it to generate visualisations from text prompts ("show me monthly revenue by state as a bar chart"), create calculations, clean data in Prep Builder, and get explanations of what a dashboard is showing. **None of it is included in Tableau Standard or Tableau Enterprise.** Tableau's own edition comparison lists Agent in Pulse, Agent in Authoring, Agent in Prep and Agent in Catalog as four separate rows, and all four are ticked only for **Cloud+** and the Tableau+ Bundle. Cloud+ is contact-sales. The Creator and Explorer licence types can *use* Agent, but only on an edition that has it — Tableau's own table is headed "Edition-level feature restrictions apply."

**3\. Agentforce Tableau** (formerly the more experimental "Tableau AI" brand) — the advanced tier. Three skills: Concierge (conversational analysis, ask "why are churn rates up?"), Inspector (proactive anomaly and threshold monitoring), and Data Pro (agentic data prep, semantic model building). This is the cutting edge, and it lives in Tableau Cloud+ or the Tableau+ Bundle tier. Both are enterprise priced — Salesforce will not publish a number publicly.

The practical distinction for Australian buyers: if you are in Salesforce already, the deeper Agentforce integration is compelling. If you are not, you are paying to enter an ecosystem, not just buy a tool.

## Tableau Pulse: The Feature Worth Talking About

Pulse is the most immediately useful AI feature for non-technical business users, and it deserves specific attention.

The concept is simple: rather than expecting every manager and executive to log into Tableau and know how to navigate it, Pulse brings the data to them. Define your key metrics once. Pulse monitors them continuously and sends digests through the channels people already use. It uses AI to detect what changed, why it changed (to the degree the data supports it), and what to watch. Plain language throughout.

You can ask follow-up questions — "Which product drove that?" "How does that compare to last quarter?" — without needing to touch a dashboard. The answers are grounded in your actual data, not a hallucination.

For a busy Melbourne operations manager who has never had time to get comfortable with Tableau's full interface, Pulse genuinely changes what they get from the tool. It is not magic — you need someone to set up the metrics properly first — but once that groundwork exists, the payoff is real.

Enhanced Q&A (deeper cross-metric analysis and multi-turn conversations) is a premium Pulse capability, only available in Tableau Cloud+ and the Tableau+ Bundle.

## Australian Pricing (AUD, Billed Annually)

**Read this bit before you compare Tableau to anything else.** Tableau's pricing page serves **US dollars by default to an Australian visitor**. There is a currency selector on the page; until you change it to Australian Dollar (AUD), you are reading US$15 and US$35\. The figures below were read on 23 September 2026 with that selector set to **Australian Dollar (AUD)**.

These are Tableau's own Australian-dollar prices, not our conversion. Per our AUD pricing rule we publish them as they are.

### Tableau Cloud — sold by edition

| Edition | Price (AUD/user/month) | What it adds |
| ---------------------- | ---------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Tableau Standard** | **From AU$21** | Web authoring, Tableau Desktop, Prep Builder, Tableau Pulse, Tableau MCP, up to 3 sites |
| **Tableau Enterprise** | **From AU$49** | Everything in Standard, plus Advanced Management, Data Management, eLearning, up to 10 sites |
| **Tableau Cloud+** | Contact sales | Everything in Enterprise, plus **all Tableau Agent capabilities**, Premier Success, 50 sites, Release Preview |
| **Tableau+ Bundle** | Contact sales | Everything in Cloud+, plus the Tableau Next platform and Tableau Next in Slack |

All four require an **annual contract, billed annually**. Tableau's FAQ is blunt about it: *"No. All Tableau products require an annual contract, billed annually."* There is no monthly option at any price.

### Where Tableau Agent actually sits

This is the part that matters for an AI review, and it is easy to miss. Tableau's edition comparison breaks Agent into four rows, and **Standard and Enterprise get none of them**:

| Capability | Standard | Enterprise | Cloud+ | Tableau+ Bundle |
| -------------------------- | -------- | ---------- | ------ | --------------- |
| Tableau Pulse | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Tableau MCP | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Tableau Agent in Pulse | — | — | ✅ | ✅ |
| Tableau Agent in Authoring | — | — | ✅ | ✅ |
| Tableau Agent in Prep | — | — | ✅ | ✅ |
| Tableau Agent in Catalog | — | — | ✅ | ✅ |

So an Australian business can buy Tableau Pulse for AU$21 a user a month. It cannot buy Tableau Agent at any published price — Cloud+ is a phone call.

### Creator, Explorer and Viewer are licence types, not tiers

Tableau layers three **user licence types** on top of whichever edition you buy. Creator can build and publish data sources and Pulse metrics; Explorer can edit existing workbooks; Viewer can read, interact and receive Pulse digests. The footnote on the pricing page reads: *"Every deployment requires at least one Creator license. For additional users, Creator, Explorer, and Viewer licenses are available."*

**Tableau publishes no price for any of the three.** The "from AU$21" headline is the cheapest seat in the Standard edition, and a deployment cannot consist only of cheap seats — you must have at least one Creator, and a Creator costs whatever Salesforce AU quotes you. The practical consequence is worth stating plainly: **you cannot work out what the smallest possible Tableau Cloud deployment costs from Tableau's pricing page.** Get a written quote before you budget.

*An earlier version of this review published indicative Creator and Explorer figures of US$75 and US$42 per user per month sourced from third-party sites. Those are withdrawn — they are not vendor-confirmed, and they do not map onto the edition structure Tableau actually sells.*

### Tableau Next (standalone)

| Product | Price (AUD/user/month) | Notes |
| ---------------- | ---------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Tableau Next** | **From AU$56** | Includes Tableau Agent, Tableau Semantics and native Slack integration. Creator and Consumer licence types. Billed annually. |

Tableau Next is the agentic analytics layer built on the Agentforce 360 platform, aimed at Salesforce CRM users. It is the **only published price at which you can buy Tableau Agent** — but it is a different product from Tableau Cloud, not a cheaper way into it. If what you want is AI inside your Tableau Cloud dashboards, Next is not that.

### Tableau Desktop Free Edition

A free, locally installed version is available. Full authoring capabilities against local files (Excel, CSV, databases). Cannot publish to Tableau Cloud or Server. No sharing. No time limit. Useful for individual analysts evaluating the tool.

### GST

Tableau does not state a GST position on the pricing page. Treat the listed AUD figures as GST-exclusive for business customers and confirm with Salesforce AU before contract.

## Australian Data Residency

Salesforce operates Australian-region infrastructure for Tableau Cloud. The Australia region is identified as **ap-southeast-2** (Sydney, AWS region) with pod naming `prod-apsoutheast-a`. This is confirmed in Tableau's own IP authorisation documentation (help.tableau.com, June 2026).

This matters. Australian businesses using Tableau Cloud can elect to have their data hosted in the Sydney region. For organisations subject to the Australian Privacy Act, industry-specific data handling requirements (healthcare, financial services, government), or internal IT policies requiring local data residency, this is a meaningful advantage over some competitors where Australian data processing does not happen locally.

**Important caveat on AI inference data residency:** Tableau Cloud hosting in ap-southeast-2 covers the core analytics data. For AI features (Tableau Pulse, Tableau Agent, Agentforce Tableau), Salesforce uses geo-aware LLM routing via the Einstein Trust Layer — LLM requests are routed to the nearest supported region based on your Salesforce org, but fallback "always routes to the US Azure OpenAI region" if the nearest region is unavailable (confirmed: help.tableau.com/current/online/en-us/pulse\_intro.htm, June 2026). Australia is not listed as a supported AI inference region in Tableau's published documentation as of June 2026 — the confirmed supported regions for AI data residency include Switzerland, India, South Korea, and the US. This means AI inference for Australian Tableau Cloud customers is likely processing through US-based Azure OpenAI infrastructure, not within Australian borders. We could not confirm from public sources whether an Australian AI inference node exists, so do not treat AU AI inference residency as a given. Get direct confirmation from a Salesforce AU account executive before signing any data-sensitive contract.

**Salesforce AU entity:** SFDC Australia Pty Ltd, ABN 91 109 182 989, Salesforce Tower, 180 George St, Sydney NSW 2000\. Offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, and Perth.

For comparison: Power BI Copilot (Microsoft) also has Australian Azure regions, but some AI features route data through US infrastructure for processing. Tableau's Sydney-first architecture gives it a stronger default position for data-sensitive Australian organisations, though the AI caveat above applies to both platforms.

## Ease of Use: Be Honest About This

Tableau is not a beginner tool. This is not a criticism — it is a fact that matters for Australian buyers.

Building a dashboard from scratch in Tableau requires genuine data literacy. Understanding dimensions versus measures, connecting and joining data sources, creating calculated fields — these are learnable skills, but they take time. Tableau estimates a competent analyst needs several weeks to become productive. Most users who get value from it have been through structured training (Tableau offers eLearning, instructor-led courses, and a Trailhead learning path via Salesforce).

Tableau Pulse dramatically lowers the bar for consuming data, but it does not lower the bar for setting it up. Someone needs to build the underlying metrics, publish them, and maintain data connections. In a medium-to-large business with a dedicated data analyst or BI team, this is normal overhead. In a 10-person Melbourne marketing agency with no analyst, it is a significant commitment.

**The onboarding comparison:** \- Looker Studio (Google): connect Google Analytics or Sheets in under 30 minutes, basic dashboards in an hour. Free. - Power BI: steeper than Looker Studio, but Microsoft 365 integration and familiar Office UI help. AU$21.00/user/month (Pro) or AU$35.90/user/month (Premium Per User) for the copilot tier. - Tableau Cloud Standard: from AU$21/user/month, annual contract only. Expect 2–4 weeks before a non-analyst user is genuinely productive building content. The Pulse feature helps consumers, not builders.

This is not unusual for enterprise BI software. But it is the honest picture.

## Who Tableau Is For

**Good fit:** \- Medium and large Australian businesses with at least one dedicated data analyst or BI team - Finance, banking, insurance, government, and healthcare teams with complex data and data residency requirements - Organisations already in the Salesforce ecosystem (CRM + Tableau is a natural combination) - Teams with complex, multi-source data requirements that simpler tools cannot handle - Businesses where the cost of bad decisions outweighs the cost of proper BI investment

**Poor fit:** \- Sole traders and micro-businesses — the cost and complexity are disproportionate - SMBs with simple reporting needs (Google Sheets + Looker Studio will do the job) - Businesses not in the Salesforce ecosystem who baulk at ecosystem lock-in - Teams that need a tool operational in a day, not a quarter - Any organisation where "contact sales for pricing" is a deal-breaker (it often should be)

## How It Compares

| | Tableau Cloud Standard | Power BI Pro | Looker Studio |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------- | -------------------------------------- |
| **Price (AUD/user/month)** | From AU$21 (annual only) | \~AU$21.00 | Free |
| **AI features** | Tableau Pulse (all editions); Tableau Agent needs Cloud+ (quote-only) | Copilot (premium tier) | Basic only |
| **AU data residency** | Yes (Sydney, ap-southeast-2) | Yes (Azure AU East) | Google AU regions (verify with Google) |
| **Ease of setup** | Complex | Moderate (M365 integration helps) | Easy |
| **Visualisation quality** | Best in class | Very good | Good |
| **Best for** | Data teams, enterprise | M365 users, SMBs | Simple reporting, Google stack |

**Power BI vs Tableau:** The honest answer for most Australian SMBs is Power BI. It is cheaper, better integrated with Microsoft 365 (which most AU businesses use), and has genuinely improved Copilot AI features. Power BI Copilot does not match Tableau Pulse for depth, but it is close enough for most business use cases at a fraction of the price. Where Tableau wins is visualisation sophistication, complex data modelling, and — for large organisations — the depth of the Agentforce integration.

**Looker Studio:** Google's free tool is excellent for anyone living in the Google ecosystem (Analytics, Ads, BigQuery). It does not compete with Tableau on power. It competes on simplicity and price.

**Julius AI and similar NL tools:** Julius AI lets you upload a CSV and ask questions in plain English. It is designed for the "I have a spreadsheet and a question" use case. Tableau is designed for the "I have 12 data sources and 50 users who need governed, replicable, monitored analytics" use case. They are not in the same category.

## Score

| ------------------------- | --------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Value for Money** | 2/5 | AU$21/user/month is a fair entry price for enterprise BI, the AUD figures are Tableau's own, and the free Desktop edition is genuinely full-featured. But no published edition includes Tableau Agent — the AI this review scores — and the mandatory Creator licence has no published price, so an Australian buyer cannot cost a deployment or buy the AI without a sales call. Annual contract only; no monthly plan at any tier. |
| **Ease of Use** | 3/5 | Pulse lowers the consumption bar significantly. Building and maintaining content requires data literacy and training investment. Not a quick-start tool. |
| **Feature Depth** | 5/5 | Best-in-class visual analytics. Tableau Pulse — proactive, plain-English alerts on metric changes — is a real step beyond static dashboards. Agentforce Tableau (Concierge, Inspector, Data Pro) at the top tiers is ahead of most competitors. MCP integration is a real developer differentiator. |
| **Australian Fit** | 4/5 | Australian data residency confirmed (ap-southeast-2, Sydney). Tableau publishes genuine AUD prices for every tier it prices at all — not a conversion. AU local Salesforce entity (ABN 91 109 182 989) and offices in major cities. Against that: the page **shows an Australian visitor US dollars by default**, AI inference data residency for Agentforce features is unconfirmed for Australia, and there is no GST clarity. The AUD positive and the USD-default trap cancel out; 4/5 holds. |
| **Reliability & Support** | 4/5 | Tableau is a Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader for Analytics and BI. 99.9% uptime SLA on Cloud. Large AU support team, Trailhead community, certified training partners nationally. Standard Success is self-service; Premier Success (faster response, named support) requires Cloud+ or above. |
| **Total** | **18/25** | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good |

**Note on star rating:** Raw score of 18/25 places Tableau in the ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good band. Australian Fit of 4/5 meets the Australian Fit gate threshold (≥4/5 required for five stars), but the overall score falls in the four-star band regardless. Rating is ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good.

## Our Verdict

Tableau remains the benchmark for enterprise visual analytics, and the AI additions — particularly Tableau Pulse — make a real difference for organisations that already have the data infrastructure to support it. The Sydney-region data hosting is a genuine plus for data-sensitive Australian businesses.

The limitation is access, and it is sharper than it looks. **Every** Tableau Agent capability sits behind contact-sales pricing — not just the advanced ones. What AU$21 buys you is Pulse, which is good, and Tableau MCP, which is genuinely useful if you have developers. What it does not buy you is the AI assistant most people mean when they say "Tableau AI". For a dedicated data team at a mid-to-large Australian organisation, that is a reasonable conversation to have with Salesforce. For a small business owner in Brisbane trying to understand why revenue dipped last quarter, Tableau is solving the wrong problem at the wrong price.

If your business has a data analyst, 20+ staff, and complex reporting requirements — Tableau is worth a serious evaluation. Start with the free Tableau Desktop edition to test the interface, then talk to Salesforce AU about Cloud pricing.

If you are an SMB, start with Power BI (especially if you are on Microsoft 365) or Looker Studio. You can always move up later.

- **23 Sep 2026** — **Correction: this review described a price ladder Tableau has never published, and put Tableau Agent in the wrong tier.** **Was:** a Tableau Cloud matrix of Standard Viewer AU$21 / Enterprise Viewer AU$49 with "Explorer" and "Creator" rows marked *contact sales*, plus the claim that "Tableau Agent is included in Tableau Cloud Standard for some functions" and indicative Creator/Explorer figures of US$75 and US$42 per user/month taken from third-party sites. **Now:** Tableau sells Tableau Cloud by **edition** — **Tableau Standard from AU$21** and **Tableau Enterprise from AU$49** per user per month, billed annually — and **no published edition includes Tableau Agent at all**; Agent in Pulse, Authoring, Prep and Catalog all require **Tableau Cloud+**, which is quote-only. Creator, Explorer and Viewer are user licence types layered on an edition, and Tableau publishes no price for any of them. The third-party US$75 / US$42 figures are withdrawn. - **23 Sep 2026** — **The AU$21 and AU$49 figures are not new, and nothing was restructured.** The [7 June 2026 capture](https://web.archive.org/web/20260607065838id%5F/https://www.tableau.com/pricing) — taken the day this review was written — already carries the four editions, AU$21, AU$49, AU$56 for Tableau Next, and the Cloud+ line "Tableau Agent in Tableau Cloud and Pulse". The error was ours on the day, not a later vendor change. A 21 September monitor note recording a pricing "restructure" is superseded by this bullet.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Does Tableau store Australian data in Australia?** Yes. Tableau Cloud has an Australia-region instance (ap-southeast-2, Sydney). This is confirmed in Tableau's published IP documentation. Verify the data flow for advanced Agentforce AI features with Salesforce AU before signing — AI inference routing requires a specific contractual conversation.

**Can I try Tableau for free?** Yes. Tableau Desktop Free Edition is a full-featured local desktop version with no time limit. You cannot publish or share, and it only works with local files. Tableau Cloud also offers a free trial. Sign up at tableau.com.

**What's the difference between Tableau Pulse and a regular dashboard?** A dashboard requires users to log in, navigate, and know what to look for. Tableau Pulse delivers AI-generated metric summaries proactively — to Slack, Teams, or email — and lets users ask follow-up questions in plain English. It is the difference between a passive report and an active data assistant.

**How much does Tableau cost in Australia, and which tier has Tableau Agent?** Tableau Cloud starts at AU$21 per user per month for the Standard edition and AU$49 for Enterprise, both billed annually on a compulsory annual contract. Those are Tableau's own Australian-dollar prices, but the pricing page shows US dollars to Australian visitors until you change the on-page currency selector to AUD. Tableau Agent is in neither tier — every Agent capability requires Tableau Cloud+, which is quote-only. Tableau also publishes no price for the Creator licence that every deployment must include, so you cannot cost a rollout from the page.

**Is Tableau better than Power BI?** It depends on what you need. For complex, multi-source visualisation and large enterprise data teams: Tableau wins. For M365-integrated SMB analytics at a lower price: Power BI is the better choice. Most Australian SMBs are better served by Power BI.

**Does Tableau work with Salesforce CRM?** Yes. The two are now part of the same product family and integrate directly. If you use Salesforce Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, or Marketing Cloud, Tableau is the natural analytics partner. The integration is tighter than any third-party alternative.

**How the currency was read, and what an archive can and cannot show.** Tableau's pricing page serves USD to an Australian visitor; the AUD figures appear only after changing an on-page `<select>` to Australian Dollar (AUD). No `curl`, fetch or screenshot of the default view would ever show them, and this vendor returns HTTP 403 to `curl` in any case. However — and unlike some vendors — **Tableau renders every currency into the served HTML and merely hides the ones you have not selected.** We confirmed this by fetching the page's own URL from inside the loaded page and comparing the served bytes with the rendered DOM: both contain `AU$21`, `AU$49` and `AU$56`. That means a Wayback capture of this URL **is** valid evidence of the AUD price, provided you read the raw bytes with the `id_` modifier rather than the replayed page. Source 1's 7 June 2026 capture is cited on exactly that basis, and it is the evidence for the correction in the update history: it already carried AU$21, AU$49 and the Cloud+ Agent line on the day this review was first published.

**Contemporaneous snapshot still owed** for the 23 September 2026 read. Save Page Now has returned HTTP 500 since 18 September 2026, so no capture could be created for today's verification.

**Withdrawn sources.** The June 2026 version of this review cited redresscompliance.com, qrvey.com and mammoth.io (⭐⭐ secondary) for indicative USD Explorer and Creator pricing. Those figures have been removed from the review and the citations retired: they were never vendor-confirmed, and they describe a per-role price list Tableau does not publish.
