- Description: Stable Diffusion is the open-weights image generator you can run for free on your own computer — or pay to use through Stability AI's hosted plans. For Australians the model is free, but every paid path bills in USD with no local hosting. Here's the honest read.

> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Stable Diffusion is the do-it-yourself end of AI image generation. The models are open-weights and free to download, and under Stability AI's Community Licence you can use them commercially for nothing as long as your business turns over **under USD $1M a year** — which covers almost every Australian small business reading this. The catch is that "free" means you supply the computer: a decent graphics card, some patience, and a tolerance for setup. If you don't want that, you pay for a hosted version (Stability's **pay-as-you-go API, from USD $0.03–$0.08 per image**; the old Brand Studio Core self-serve plan is gone — Brand Studio is now an enterprise-only custom engagement with no public price) — and every one of those paths bills in **US dollars**, with no native AUD, no GST line, and no Australian hosting. Stable Diffusion is the most flexible, most customisable image AI you can get, and the cheapest if you have the hardware. It is also the least convenient, and the least Australian-friendly on billing. For a tinkerer or a small studio that wants total control, it's an easy recommendation. For a busy business owner who just wants a picture in 30 seconds, a hosted rival will serve you better.

## What Stable Diffusion is

Stable Diffusion is a family of AI image-generation models from **Stability AI**. You type a text prompt — "a flat-lay of a coffee cup on a linen tablecloth, soft morning light" — and it paints an image to match. What sets it apart from most rivals is that it is **open-weights**: Stability publishes the actual model files, so you can download them and run them on your own machine, offline, with no subscription and no one watching your prompts.

The current generation is **Stable Diffusion 3.5**, released **22 October 2024** (with the Medium variant following on 29 October). It ships in three sizes:

- **SD 3.5 Large** — the flagship, **8.1 billion parameters**, the best quality and prompt-following in the family.
- **SD 3.5 Large Turbo** — a distilled, faster version that makes images in roughly four steps instead of dozens.
- **SD 3.5 Medium** — **2.5 billion parameters**, built to run "out of the box" on ordinary consumer hardware.

Because the weights are open, a large community has grown around them: thousands of fine-tuned models, add-ons and interfaces (ComfyUI, Automatic1111, Forge, Fooocus and others) that nobody at Stability built. That is the real Stable Diffusion story — the model is a starting point, and the ecosystem does the rest. It also means there is no single "Stable Diffusion app" to review; there is a free model and several ways to run it.

## What it costs in Australia

This is where Stable Diffusion splits in two, so read both halves.

**Path one — run it yourself (free):** Download the SD 3.5 weights and run them locally. Under Stability's **Community Licence**, this is **free for non-commercial use and free for commercial use for any individual or organisation under USD $1M in annual revenue** — "regardless of the source of that revenue." For the vast majority of Australian sole traders and small businesses, that means the model itself costs nothing, forever. You pay only in hardware and electricity. Cross USD $1M in turnover and you need an **Enterprise Licence** (custom pricing, contact required).

**Path two — pay Stability to host it:** If you don't want to run your own machine, Stability sells hosted access. None of it is priced in AUD.

All figures are USD; the AUD figures are my own conversion at ≈1.40 for guidance only and are not what Stability charges.*

**Value verdict:** On raw value, Stable Diffusion is unbeatable — a flagship image model, free to use commercially for almost every small business. But that value is conditional on you having the hardware and the willingness to set it up. The hosted plans are where the value gets ordinary: the **pay-as-you-go API** (from **USD $0.03 per image**) is the only self-serve hosted path now that Brand Studio Core is gone, and it still bills in USD with no AUD line — dearer, in the friction sense, than several hosted rivals that bill in plain AUD and need zero setup. So the score depends entirely on which path you take.

## How it works in practice

Run locally, the experience is whatever interface you install. The friendly end (Fooocus, or the Stable Assistant web app) looks like any other prompt box: type, wait, get an image. The powerful end (ComfyUI) is a node-graph you wire together yourself — total control over every step, and a genuine learning curve. This is the trade at the heart of Stable Diffusion: **more control than any hosted rival, in exchange for more work.**

Where it shines is **customisation**. Because the weights are open, you can train the model on your own images — your products, your brand style, a specific person's likeness (with consent) — using techniques like LoRA fine-tuning. No hosted, closed rival lets you do that to the model itself. For a studio that needs a consistent house style across hundreds of images, that is the whole argument.

Where it frustrates is **setup and consistency**. Getting SD 3.5 Large running well wants a capable GPU (broadly, 8GB+ of video memory, more for the Large model) and time. Results swing on prompt wording, the specific fine-tune you loaded, and a stack of settings. Paying per image via the API smooths most of that away, but then you're back to billing in USD and the open-weights advantage is mostly gone.

Two honest limitations to name. First, **text rendering and fine detail** in SD 3.5, while much improved, still trail the very best closed models on tricky prompts. Second, **safety and copyright sit with you**: open weights mean no guardrails you didn't add, and the training-data provenance of these models has been the subject of public legal disputes — a consideration if you're generating commercial work.

## What it does well

- **Free to use commercially for almost every small business.** Under the Community Licence, any Australian individual or organisation under **USD $1M revenue** can use SD 3.5 commercially at no cost. That is genuinely rare.
- **It runs on your own computer, offline.** Your prompts and images never have to leave your machine — the strongest privacy position of any tool in this category.
- **Unmatched customisation.** Open weights let you fine-tune the model on your own images for a consistent house style. No closed rival allows that.
- **A huge free ecosystem.** Thousands of community fine-tunes, interfaces and add-ons, none of which you pay Stability for.
- **A current, capable flagship.** SD 3.5 Large (8.1B parameters, released October 2024) is a strong, modern model, not a legacy release.

## What to watch out for

- **You supply the computer.** "Free" assumes a capable GPU and the patience to set it up. Without that, the free path isn't realistic and you're into the paid plans.
- **Every paid path bills in USD.** No native AUD, no GST line, no local tax invoice. The self-serve hosted path is pay-as-you-go API credits, **from USD $0.03 per image**; Brand Studio is now enterprise-only with no public price.
- **No Australian data residency.** Stability is a US/UK vendor and transfers data internationally for its hosted services. (Running locally sidesteps this entirely — that's the point.)
- **No local support.** Help docs, a Discord community and email only. No AU office, no business hours.
- **Safety and copyright are on you.** Open weights mean no built-in guardrails, and the models' training data has been litigated publicly. Factor that into commercial use.

## Australian fit

- **Available in Australia:** Yes — the model is downloadable worldwide; hosted plans and the API are open to Australian users.
- **Pricing in AUD:** **No.** Everything paid is in **USD**. The model itself is free, but there is no AUD billing anywhere.
- **GST:** Not shown as an AUD GST line. US-dollar billing; check whether your card issuer adds a foreign-transaction fee.
- **Data residency:** None for Australia on the hosted side (international transfers). **Running locally keeps everything on your own machine** — the best residency answer in this category, but only if you self-host.
- **Local support:** None AU-specific — docs, community Discord and email.
- **Training on your data:** If you run locally, nothing is sent anywhere. For hosted services, Stability's Privacy Policy states it does use your inputs and outputs "to train and improve our models" — but it also gives you an opt-out: "you can opt-out of our use of this personal data for these training purposes." Opt out before uploading sensitive material.

## Bottom line

Stable Diffusion is the power tool of AI image generation. For a tinkerer, a developer, or a small studio that wants to train the model on its own house style and keep every image on its own hardware, nothing else comes close — and for almost every Australian small business, the model is free to use commercially. That is a remarkable deal.

But it is not the easy choice, and this is an Australian publication for busy people. The free path demands a capable computer and real setup time. The convenient path bills per image in US dollars via the API, with no GST line and no Australian hosting, and at that point cheaper, AUD-native rivals with zero setup start to look smarter. Stable Diffusion scores 16, not higher, for those honest reasons: the value is extraordinary *if* you'll do the work, ordinary if you won't, and the Australian-billing experience is the weakest in this category.

Our pick: if you have the hardware and the curiosity, run SD 3.5 locally — it's the best value in image generation, full stop. If you don't, look first at a hosted, AUD-billing rival before paying USD per image here. We'll refresh this if Stability adds AUD billing, an AU region, or a new model.

*Note: under the Australian Fit gate, five stars requires Australian Fit ≥ 4/5\. That isn't in play here — the raw total of 16/25 sits in the four-star band regardless — but it's why the USD-only billing weighs on the verdict.*

Update history
- **29 Sep 2026 — verified USD by browser; API rates unchanged.** `platform.stability.ai/pricing`: 1 credit = $0.01, 25 free credits to start, Stable Image Ultra 8 credits, SD 3.5 Large 6.5, SD 3.5 Large Turbo 4 — every figure holds. No `A$`. The per-credit AUD figure was still on the retired 1.55 basis (\~$0.0155); now \~A$0.014 at about 1.40, ex-GST, with per-image AUD added. Brand Studio remains custom. Score unchanged. - **21 Sep 2026 — correction** — **Brand Studio Core, the self-serve USD $50/month hosted plan this review scored against, no longer exists.** The citation for it (`stability.ai/brand-studio-plans`) now returns HTTP 404 — found in a full-corpus citation check. Stability AI's own site now routes Brand Studio's "See plans" link to `stability.ai/strategic-partnerships`, a bespoke enterprise-engagement page with no listed self-serve price ("Get in touch with our team"); there is no public Trial/Core/Enterprise tier structure any more. The only remaining self-serve hosted path is the pay-as-you-go API credit model, which this review already documented separately and is unchanged (Stable Image Ultra 8 credits/US$0.08 per image, SD 3.5 Large 6.5 credits/US$0.065, credits US$0.01 each). Every "Brand Studio Core at USD $50/month" reference below is corrected to reflect this. **No score change made in this pass** — the Value for Money criterion's note ("loses a mark because hosted Core at USD $50/mo is dearer than AUD-native rivals") no longer describes a real plan and needs a full re-verification against the current pay-as-you-go economics; flagged for `aid-score-sync`, not resolved here. ## Frequently asked questions

### Is Stable Diffusion available in Australia?

Yes. The open-weights models are downloadable worldwide, and Stability AI's hosted plans and API are open to Australian users. There's no Australian office, region or local support behind it.

### Is Stable Diffusion free in Australia?

The model is, for most. Under Stability's Community Licence you can use SD 3.5 commercially for free if your business turns over under USD $1M a year — but you supply the computer (a capable GPU and setup time).

### Does Stable Diffusion charge in AUD?

No. Every paid path bills in US dollars — pay-as-you-go API credits from USD $0.03 per image, or a bespoke enterprise deal via Brand Studio (no public price) — with no AUD billing, no GST line and no local tax invoice.

### Is my data stored in Australia?

Only if you self-host. Run locally and nothing leaves your machine — the best privacy position in the category. Stability's hosted services transfer data internationally and use inputs for training unless you opt out.

### Who should actually use Stable Diffusion?

Tinkerers and small studios wanting total control and a consistent house style via fine-tuning. A busy owner who just wants an image in 30 seconds should pick a hosted, AUD-billing rival instead.

*Secondary (context only): Get AI Perks and Oreate AI pricing-explainer pages — used only to cross-check the per-image credit counts against Stability's own credit model (1 credit = USD $0.01; Ultra 8 / SD 3.5 Large 6.5 / Large Turbo 4), not relied on for any primary fact.*

*Note: the live developer-platform pricing table (`platform.stability.ai/pricing`) is JavaScript-rendered and did not return to text on review, so the per-image credit figures are anchored to Stability's published credit model (Source 5, API Pricing Update) and the fixed USD $0.01/credit rate; the hosted-service training-on-inputs stance is quoted from Stability's Privacy Policy (Source 6).*
