*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Yomu AI is the most affordable tool in this roundup with access to frontier AI models — its Ultra plan lists Claude 5 Sonnet and Opus, GPT-5.6 Terra, Grok 4.6, DeepSeek V4 and Kimi K3 as of 21 September 2026 — at prices that will appeal to students on a budget. It does what it says: AI-assisted academic writing, PDF chat, citations, plagiarism checking. The problem is that the company is small, the data-privacy disclosures are thin, your data is processed on US servers, and — critically — the tool is oriented almost entirely around AI text generation. For Australian students whose universities apply TEQSA-aligned academic-integrity policies (most of them), using Yomu's core features for assessed work is a policy breach waiting to happen. It is not a bad tool; it is the wrong tool for many of the people it is marketed at.

## What Yomu AI is

Yomu AI is a London-based academic writing assistant founded by Elman Mansimov (an AI researcher with a background in generative models) and Santiago Silva Dalla Rizza. The company grew out of Sourcely, a citation-finding tool, after user demand pushed it toward full AI writing assistance.

The product is a browser-based writing assistant oriented around students and researchers. It provides AI autocomplete and generation, multi-model chat with PDFs, web search integration, academic paper search, plagiarism checking, and a library for managing sources. The distinguishing claim is breadth of frontier AI model access: the Pro plan includes GPT-4o mini and Claude 4.5 Haiku; the Ultra plan adds GPT-4o, GPT-5, Claude 4.5 Sonnet and Opus, Gemini 3.0 Pro, DeepSeek v3, and others. For a researcher who wants to compare outputs across models, that variety has value.

The Believer plan ($499 one-time) offered extended access to frontier models and Ultra features, pitched at users who want long-term access at a fixed cost. **It no longer appears on Yomu’s pricing page**, which showed only Pro and Ultra when re-read on 21 September 2026; the model version this review attached to it (Claude 4.0 Opus) is not on Yomu’s current list either. Treat the plan as withdrawn until the vendor says otherwise.

Note: Yomu has recently removed its one-time Starter plan (as of October 2025) in favour of subscription-only pricing.

## What it costs in Australia

Yomu prices in USD. No AUD-native pricing, no published GST treatment. Conversions below use USD × 1.40 (ex-GST) and × 1.40 × 1.10 (ex-GST) as estimates.

| Plan | USD/month (annual) | AUD/month ex-GST | Key features |

## How it works in practice

Yomu's interface is a split-pane editor: document on the left, AI chat and model selector on the right. You write, the AI suggests completions or full sections on request, and the chat panel lets you interrogate uploaded PDFs, search the academic literature, or use web search.

The model selection is the headline feature. On the Ultra plan, you can switch between GPT-5, Claude 4.5 Opus, and Gemini 3.0 Pro in the same session. For a researcher who wants to cross-check AI outputs — asking GPT-5 to draft a section, then asking Claude to critique it — that is a genuinely useful capability. Most competing tools lock you to one underlying model.

Plagiarism checking is included. Citation generation works by searching academic sources and suggesting references. As with all AI citation tools, the outputs are not guaranteed to be accurate.

The free trial exists but daily limits are hit quickly — the tool is really designed for paid users.

## What it does well

**Frontier model access at a low price.** Ultra's model list, read from Yomu's pricing page on 21 September 2026, runs **GPT-5.6 Terra, Claude 5 Sonnet and Opus, Grok 4.6, DeepSeek V4 and Kimi K3**; the cheaper Pro plan gets the efficient tier — GPT-5.6 Luna, Claude 4.5 Haiku, Gemini 3.7 Flash and Muse Spark — and Gemini 3.7 Flash is the free default for chat. That is a breadth of top-tier models that costs substantially more through direct API access. *(The price in this paragraph has moved since the review was written and is flagged for the pricing sweep — see the update history.)* For researchers who understand models and want to choose their tool by task, this is a real advantage.

**Price point is genuinely accessible for students.** Pro at $11/month USD (\~$19 AUD) is the most affordable paid plan in this roundup with meaningful capability. A student who uses it within appropriate policy limits — brainstorming, source summarisation — can get value at low cost.

**Multi-model PDF chat.** Uploading PDFs and being able to ask questions of them using different AI models — the OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, DeepSeek and Kimi families all appear on Yomu’s plan lists — in the same session is a feature no competitor currently offers at this price.

**Web search integration.** Unlike Jenni and most competitors at this price, Yomu integrates live web search into the research workflow — useful for current-events research or finding non-paywalled sources.

**Ethics statement is a positive signal.** Yomu publishes an ethics statement (yomu.ai/ethics-statement) addressing its position on responsible AI use in academic writing. Most tools in this category do not. It does not resolve the academic-integrity tension, but the transparency is worth acknowledging.

---

## What it doesn't do well

**Data privacy disclosures are thin.** Yomu's privacy policy is a generic two-page document. It discloses that data processors in the US store authentication and account data under EU Standard Contractual Clauses. It does not specify what happens to your essay drafts, PDF uploads, or AI-generated content. A researcher with sensitive data — ethics-cleared research, commercially sensitive materials, grant-funded IP — should not use Yomu without getting clear answers from the company first (contact@yomu.ai).

**No Australian data residency, no Privacy Act disclosure.** Data goes to US servers. There is no mention of the Australian Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) or the Australian Privacy Principles. Yomu appears to have no specific Australian compliance framework. (not confirmed by the vendor)

**Language editing is not the core product.** Yomu does not have a dedicated academic grammar checker or proofreading module. It generates text and offers rewriting — but it does not flag your grammar errors, suggest corrections, or check against academic style conventions the way Paperpal or Writefull do. If you want feedback on your existing prose, Yomu is not the right tool.

**No Word or Overleaf integration.** Yomu is browser-only. Researchers who work in LaTeX/Overleaf or in Microsoft Word have no native integration. Everything is copy-paste.

**Thin support infrastructure.** Yomu is a small team. Priority support is listed for paid plans, but there is no phone support, no SLA published, and no institutional licensing option described on the website. For a university purchasing tool, that is a gap.

**The core product is optimised for AI text generation.** Yomu's primary function is helping you produce text with AI. That is exactly what most Australian university academic-integrity policies prohibit for assessed work. The tool does not prominently caveat this.

## Australian fit — academic integrity and TEQSA

Yomu's ethics statement acknowledges the tension between AI assistance and academic integrity, and recommends users follow their institution's policies. That is the right position — but Australian students need to understand what it means in practice.

**Under TEQSA's academic integrity framework**, most Australian universities treat AI-generated text submitted as a student's own work as equivalent to contract cheating. The consequences can include grade penalties, course failure, or in serious cases suspension or exclusion. Yomu is primarily a text-generation tool. Its core value proposition — let AI write your academic content — is incompatible with the policies of most Australian universities for assessed work.

**What Yomu can be used for, within most policy contexts:** \- Brainstorming ideas you then develop yourself - Asking the chat to summarise or explain a PDF you are reading - Getting a structural outline you then write from scratch - Citation formatting (with individual verification of every reference)

**What it cannot be used for:** \- Generating essay or assignment text - Using AI-written paragraphs in submitted work without explicit permission

**Citation accuracy:** Yomu's citation generation is AI-assisted and subject to hallucination. Every reference produced must be checked against the original source. Do not trust author names, journal titles, volume numbers, or DOIs without verification.

**Data handling:** US-based servers. Thin privacy disclosures. Not appropriate for sensitive research data without further information from the company.

## Alternatives

For researchers who want **stronger language editing** rather than AI generation, [Writefull](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-writefull-australia-2026/) is the better choice — EU-based, academically trained, does not generate your text for you.

For students who want **affordable AI writing assistance within policy limits**, the Paperpal free plan or Jenni AI's free tier (reviewed separately) offer similar PDF-chat and brainstorming features with slightly more transparent data policies.

For **general grammar and proofreading**, [Grammarly](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/grammarly-review-australia-2026/) or [QuillBot](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/quillbot-review-australia-2026/) are safer under most institutional policies and more appropriate for students.

---

## Bottom line

Yomu AI makes frontier AI model access affordable. For an independent researcher, a professional, or someone writing outside assessed academic contexts, that access at $11–18/month USD is genuinely compelling.

For Australian students, the combination of thin data-privacy disclosures, US server storage, and a product designed around AI text generation makes Yomu a risky choice. The academic-integrity risk is real and the company is small enough that institutional vetting would be difficult. Use it for brainstorming and PDF reading, not for anything you submit.

Score: 12/25.

Update history
- **9 Oct 2026** — Housekeeping: replaced internal editing references in this history with plain wording. No fact, price or score changed.
- **21 Sep 2026** — Model-claims check (our sourcing rules), checked against [yomu.ai/pricing](https://www.yomu.ai/pricing?ref=theaidirectory.com.au) on 21 September 2026\. **Now false, corrected:** every model version in this review. Yomu's own plan lists now read **Pro — GPT-5.6 Luna, Claude 4.5 Haiku, Gemini 3.7 Flash, Muse Spark**; **Ultra — GPT-5.6 Terra, Claude 5 Sonnet and Opus, Grok 4.6, DeepSeek V4, Kimi K3**, with Gemini 3.7 Flash as the no-credit default for chat. GPT-5, Claude 4.5 Opus, Claude 4.0 Opus and Gemini 3.0 Pro are all gone from the page. **Also gone: the Believer plan** — the pricing page shows only Pro and Ultra — which matters here because this review tied a named model to it. **Flagged, not actioned:** the plan prices have moved too (the page now shows Pro US$10/mo and Ultra US$17/mo on annual billing, against the US$18 Ultra this review quotes). That is the pricing sweep's work, not this one's. Score unchanged at 12/25 — the verdict turns on academic-integrity risk and thin privacy disclosure, neither of which moves with a model name. `reviewed:` not moved. Source: https://www.yomu.ai/pricing — Wayback capture pending.
- **24 Sep 2026** — **The grossed-up AUD column removed from the pricing table.** The table carried a second Australian column adding 10% GST to every converted figure, so each plan had two Australian prices and the higher one asserted a tax most of our readers do not pay: a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is **not charged GST** on an imported digital service. The ex-GST column is unchanged and is the price. Removed, and kept visible here per our price-history rule — the column headed *“AUD/month if GST charged, +10%”*: Pro **\~$15.40**; Ultra **\~$26.18**; Believer **\~$768.46**. `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.
- **24 Sep 2026** — **1 Australian figure in the prose corrected to agree with this review's own pricing table.** The table was verified cell by cell earlier today; it still quoted the retired 1.55 basis, in 2 places — verdict lines, score rationales, the excerpt and the JSON-LD are where a reader actually meets a price, and a pairing check cannot see them because they name no USD figure alongside. Kept visible per our price-history rule: **AUD $15.40 → AUD $14.00**. The replacement values are taken from the table, not recomputed, so the two now agree exactly. **No USD price moved and no score changed.** `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can Australian students use Yomu AI for university assignments without breaching academic integrity?

Not for generating submitted text. Yomu's core function is AI-assisted text generation, which is prohibited for assessed work at most Australian universities under TEQSA-aligned academic-integrity policies. Using Yomu to brainstorm, summarise PDFs you are reading, or format citations is generally lower-risk — but check your institution's specific policy before using any AI tool for academic work.

### How much does Yomu AI cost in Australian dollars?

Yomu prices in USD. The Pro plan is USD $11/month (billed annually), approximately AUD $14.00 ex-GST. The Ultra plan is USD $18/month annually, approximately AUD $25.20 ex-GST. A Believer one-time plan costs USD $499, approximately AUD $699 ex-GST. GST treatment is not published by Yomu — check your invoice. These are the most affordable paid plans in the academic AI writing category.

### Where is Yomu AI data stored, and is it safe for research data?

Yomu's privacy policy discloses that user authentication and account data is stored with processors in the United States under EU Standard Contractual Clauses. The policy does not specifically address the handling of essay drafts, PDF uploads, or AI outputs. Yomu does not specify whether it trains on user data or publish Australian Privacy Act compliance information. Researchers handling sensitive or ethics-approved data should contact Yomu directly (contact@yomu.ai) before using the platform.
