**The gate:** Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **The verdict:** Wispr Flow is the best AI dictation app most people will try. You hold a key, talk, and it drops clean, punctuated, formatted text straight into whatever app you are in — email, Slack, a code editor, a document — stripping the "ums" and fixing your grammar as it goes. It is genuinely fast, supports more than 100 languages with automatic switching, and the free tier is usable. The catch is structural and it matters more here than for most tools: Flow is cloud-only, with no offline mode, and your voice is processed and stored on servers in the United States. There is no Australian region. The company also has a real privacy history — early versions quietly captured screenshots, and its 2025 security certifications were caught up in an audit-firm scandal. Flow has since added a proper zero-retention Privacy Mode and commissioned a fresh independent audit, which is the right response. For a busy professional who writes all day, it is a brilliant tool. For anyone dictating client, legal, health or otherwise sensitive material, turn Privacy Mode on before you say a word, and read the data section below first. Score: 18/25 — Very Good.

## What it is

Wispr Flow is an **AI voice-dictation app** that turns speech into finished, formatted text inside any application. You assign a hotkey, hold it, speak, and Flow types the result wherever your cursor is. The difference from the dictation already built into your Mac or phone is what happens in between: Flow runs your speech through cloud AI that understands context, so it removes filler words, fixes the sentence structure, adds the right punctuation, and formats the output to suit the app you are in. A rambled thought comes out as a tidy paragraph. The company pitches it as roughly four times faster than typing.

It is made by **Wispr**, a San Francisco company founded in 2021 by Tanay Kothari and Sahaj Garg. Wispr is well funded — it raised a US$30 million Series A led by Menlo Ventures in 2025, then a US$25 million extension led by Notable Capital later that year, and has reportedly raised much more since at a far higher valuation. That backing matters for a tool you might come to rely on daily: it is not going to vanish next quarter.

Flow runs on **macOS, Windows, iPhone (iOS) and Android** (Android is newer and still being rolled out), so your dictation setup follows you across devices.

## What it costs in Australia

Flow bills in **US dollars** across three public plans, plus an enterprise tier. The headline rates:

| Plan | USD | Approx AUD (\~1.40, ex-GST) | What you get |
| -------------- | ------------- | ---------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Basic (free) | $0 | $0 | 2,000 words/week on Mac or Windows; 1,000 words/week on iPhone; 100+ languages; custom dictionary; Privacy Mode |
| Pro (monthly) | US$15/mo | \~A$21/mo | Unlimited words on all platforms; Command Mode editing; priority support; early features |
| Pro (annual) | US$12/mo | \~A$17/mo (US$144/yr ≈ \~A$202/yr) | As above, 20% cheaper paid yearly |
| Teams (annual) | US$10/user/mo | \~A$14/user/mo | Pro for teams; shared dictionary; centralised billing (3-seat minimum) |
| Enterprise | Custom | — | SSO/SAML, enforced Privacy Mode, enforced HIPAA, SOC 2 / ISO 27001, admin controls |

A few notes for Australian buyers. **The free Basic plan is genuinely useful** — 2,000 words a week on desktop covers light, regular dictation without paying anything. Every new account also starts with a **14-day Pro trial, no card required**, then drops to Basic unless you upgrade. **Students, educators and non-profits** get discounted Pro (students get around 50% off plus an extended trial). Pricing is **USD only** — Wispr publishes no AUD price and no GST line, so expect the roughly 55% currency gap plus GST through the app-store or card-processor billing layer, and confirm the GST treatment at checkout. The AUD figures above are our conversions, not quoted prices.

## How it works / features

You hold a key, you talk, Flow types. Around that core, the useful parts are:

- **Formatting that reads your context.** Flow adjusts the output to the app — a clean paragraph in a document, a short reply in a chat box, a commit message in a code editor. It removes filler words and fixes grammar automatically.
- **100+ languages with auto-switching.** It detects the language you are speaking and transcribes it, and lets you move between languages mid-flow without changing a setting.
- **Command Mode (Pro).** Speak an instruction to edit text you have already dictated — "make that more formal," "turn it into a list" — rather than retyping.
- **Custom dictionary and snippets.** Teach it names, jargon, acronyms and abbreviations it would otherwise mangle, and trigger saved blocks of text by voice. This is on the free plan too.
- **Works in every app.** Because it types at the cursor, it works anywhere you can type — Gmail, Outlook, Word, Slack, your browser, your IDE — without per-app integrations.
- **Cross-device.** The same account and dictionary on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.

Speed and accuracy hold up in independent testing — real-world accuracy on clear English audio lands around 97%, comparable to the best cloud speech engines, and the perceived speed gain over typing is real.

## What it does well

**It is the smoothest dictation experience available.** The thing that makes Flow click is that you stop talking and finished text is just *there*, formatted and clean, in the app you were already using. There is no transcribe-then-copy-then-tidy loop. For email, messaging, notes, first drafts and code comments, it genuinely changes how fast you move.

**The cleanup is the feature.** Built-in dictation gives you a wall of run-on words. Flow gives you something you can send. Removing filler and fixing structure on the fly is what justifies the price over the free option already on your device.

**The language support is excellent.** More than 100 languages with automatic detection and mid-sentence switching is well ahead of the built-in tools, and useful for multilingual Australian workplaces and households.

**The free tier is real.** A 2,000-word weekly desktop allowance is enough to decide whether dictation suits how you work before you pay anything, and the 14-day Pro trial needs no card.

**It is well backed and cross-platform.** Heavy funding and apps on every major platform mean it is a safe tool to build a daily habit around.

## Where it falls short

**It is cloud-only — no offline mode at all.** Every word you dictate is sent to Wispr's servers to be processed. Lose your internet connection and Flow stops working. Competitors such as Superwhisper offer on-device transcription that never leaves your machine; Flow does not. For anyone on patchy regional Australian connections, or anyone who simply does not want their voice leaving the device, that is a hard limitation.

**Your voice is processed and stored in the United States.** This is the single most important point for Australian buyers and it gets its own section below. There is no Australian data region.

**It has a genuine privacy history.** Early versions of Flow periodically captured **screenshots of your active window** to understand context, and sent those to the cloud alongside your audio — and when a user surfaced the practice, the company's first move was to ban them before a senior executive later apologised publicly. Separately, Flow's 2025 SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certifications were issued through an audit firm (Delve) that became the subject of a 2026 scandal alleging its attestations did not reflect real testing. Flow's response to both was the right one — it built a proper zero-retention Privacy Mode and engaged a top-tier auditor (A-LIGN) and a new compliance platform for a fresh, independent audit — but the history is part of the honest picture.

**The defaults are not the private settings.** Zero data retention is available, but you have to turn Privacy Mode on and Cloud Sync off yourself. Out of the box, transcription data can be stored on Wispr's servers. A privacy-sensitive user has to know to change this.

**USD web billing, no local presence.** No AUD pricing or GST line of Wispr's own on the web, and no Australian support entity or local-time support anywhere. The iPhone app does bill in Australian dollars with GST included, and cheaper than the web. *(Corrected 21 Sep 2026.)*

## The data question — read this before you dictate

Dictation is uniquely sensitive: an always-ready microphone that turns your spoken words — which may include client details, health information, financial figures or privileged matters — into text on someone else's servers. So the data handling deserves more than a line.

Here is how Flow actually works. Transcription **always happens in the cloud** — Wispr says this is what gives it the speed and accuracy. Audio is processed by a third-party inference provider (Baseten), the text-cleanup step runs through OpenAI, Anthropic and Cerebras models, and data is stored on **AWS in the United States**. Wispr states it holds **zero-data-retention agreements with those subprocessors**, meaning they do not store your data or train on it, and that data is encrypted in transit and at rest.

The control you have is real but opt-in:

- **Privacy Mode** enables zero data retention — audio is transcribed and immediately discarded, with no audio, text or derived data stored or used for training. It is available on **every plan, including free.**
- **Cloud Sync**, when switched off, stops Flow storing your transcripts on its servers at all.

Turn Privacy Mode on and Cloud Sync off and you reach genuine zero retention. On **Enterprise**, an admin can enforce both so individual users cannot change them, and signing a HIPAA business associate agreement permanently locks them on.

What this means for an Australian buyer. Even with zero retention, your raw voice is still **transmitted to and processed in the US** in real time — residency settings for an Australian region do not exist. For most everyday writing that is an acceptable trade for the quality. For **Privacy Act-regulated work, or any legal, medical or financial information**, treat US processing as the deciding factor: enable Privacy Mode before first use, confirm your professional and client obligations allow cloud dictation of that material at all, and prefer an on-device alternative where the content is truly sensitive. To Flow's credit, the privacy controls it offers are better than most of the category — but the defaults are not them, and the processing location is not negotiable.

## Australian fit

**Pricing:** US dollars on the web, no AUD shown there and no GST line of Wispr's own — expect the exchange gap plus GST via the billing layer, confirmed at checkout. The Australian App Store sells Pro in Australian dollars with GST already included (A$20.00/month, A$194.99/year), which is cheaper than the web on both terms. **Data residency:** processed and stored in the US on AWS, with no Australian region; zero retention is available but opt-in. For Privacy Act-sensitive work that is a material gap. **Support:** no Australian entity or local-time support. **Availability:** fully available to Australians on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, with 100+ languages including strong English handling — but nothing Australia-specific in the product, and no offline option for patchy connections. Australian Fit: 3/5\. *(Was 2/5; corrected 21 Sep 2026 — see Update history.)*

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good (16–20).

Australian Fit is 2/5, below the 4/5 threshold in our [methodology](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/), so Wispr Flow cannot be named a category Top Pick regardless of its score — the raw 18/25 still earns an honest four stars.

## Bottom line

**If you write all day and want to write faster,** Flow is the easiest recommendation in dictation. The free tier lets you test it properly, and for most people the quality of the formatted output is worth the Pro price. It is the tool that finally makes voice typing feel better than the keyboard.

**If you work on patchy or regional connections,** the cloud-only design is a real problem. There is no offline mode, so no internet means no dictation. Look at an on-device alternative if reliability matters more than polish.

**If you dictate sensitive material** — client files, legal matters, health or financial information — the US processing and storage is the deciding issue, not a footnote. Turn Privacy Mode on before you start, check that cloud dictation of that content is allowed under your obligations at all, and keep the truly sensitive work on a tool that never sends your voice off the device.

**If privacy is your top concern generally,** Flow has done the right things lately — a proper zero-retention mode and a fresh independent audit — but the defaults are still cloud storage, and the history is part of the decision. Set it up deliberately rather than trusting the out-of-box settings.

- **21 Sep 2026** — **Australian Fit corrected 2/5 → 3/5\. Total 18/25 → 19/25\. The band does not change: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good.** The bullet below is right that wisprflow.ai prices in US dollars, and it was looking at one of two surfaces. The [Australian App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/au/app/id6497229487?ref=theaidirectory.com.au) declares `"priceCurrency":"AUD"`, names **Wispr AI, Inc.** as seller and sells the Pro plan in Australian dollars with GST included, on an Apple tax invoice: **A$20.00/month, A$194.99/year or A$6.99/week**, plus **student plans at A$10.00/month and A$96.00/year**. **And it is cheaper than the web on every term.** A$20.00 including GST is about **A$18.18 ex-GST against the \~A$21** this review publishes for monthly Pro, and A$194.99 a year is about **A$177.30 ex-GST against the \~A$201** the US$144 annual plan converts to. The student tiers have no published web equivalent at all. This row named four failures — *"No AUD, GST unstated, US-only processing and storage with no AU region, no AU support"* — and **two are answered**: Australian dollars, and GST that is not merely stated but already in the number on a claimable invoice. The two that remain are the ones that matter for Privacy Act-sensitive work — **US-only processing and storage with no Australian region, and no local support** — and they keep this well below the Australian Fit threshold. ## Frequently asked questions

### Does Wispr Flow work offline?

No. Flow is cloud-only and needs an internet connection at all times — your speech is sent to Wispr's servers to be transcribed. There is no offline or on-device mode. If you need offline dictation, look at an on-device alternative.

### How much does Wispr Flow cost in Australia?

Pricing is in US dollars on the web. The free Basic plan covers 2,000 words a week on desktop. Pro is US$15/month, or US$12/month (US$144/year) paid annually — roughly A$21 and A$17 a month ex-GST and the exchange rate — with no AUD price or GST line of Wispr's own there, so confirm GST at checkout. **In the iPhone app it is Australian dollars and cheaper**: the [Australian App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/au/app/id6497229487?ref=theaidirectory.com.au) sells Pro at **A$20.00/month, A$194.99/year or A$6.99/week**, and student plans at **A$10.00/month or A$96.00/year**, GST included on an Apple tax invoice. A$194.99 a year is about A$177.30 ex-GST against the \~A$201 the annual USD plan converts to. *(Corrected 21 Sep 2026 — this passage previously said there was no AUD price of any kind.)*

### Is my voice data stored in Australia?

No. Flow processes and stores data on AWS servers in the United States, with no Australian region. You can enable Privacy Mode (available on every plan, including free) for zero data retention, but even then your audio is still transmitted to and processed in the US in real time.

### Is Wispr Flow safe to use for sensitive work?

With Privacy Mode on and Cloud Sync off, Flow achieves zero data retention and holds zero-retention agreements with its AI subprocessors. But the data is still processed in the US, and these privacy settings are opt-in rather than the default. For legal, health or financial material, enable Privacy Mode first and confirm your professional obligations allow cloud dictation of that content at all.

### What languages does Wispr Flow support?

More than 100, with automatic language detection and the ability to switch languages mid-sentence without changing a setting. English handling is strong, with real-world accuracy around 97% on clear audio.

### What devices does Wispr Flow run on?

macOS, Windows, iPhone (iOS) and Android, with the Android app newer and still rolling out. The same account, dictionary and snippets sync across your devices.
