> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Don't. Tome's AI presentation product was sunset on 30 April 2025 — the company said it "failed to find a sustainable path" for consumer AI slides. Decks that weren't exported beforehand were permanently deleted. The founders moved on to build an unrelated sales CRM (Lightfield), and the Tome brand was sold to AngelList. For an Australian wanting to make slides today, there is nothing here to sign up for. We review it only so you don't waste an afternoon looking.

## What Tome is

Tome *was* one of the breakout AI presentation tools of 2023\. You typed a prompt, and it generated a scrolling, web-native "story" — slides, but laid out like a webpage rather than PowerPoint. It went viral. By the company's own account it reached one million users quickly and tens of millions in total — reports repeating Tome's figures land somewhere between 20 and 25 million, and none of them rest on an audited source, so treat the headline number as vendor-stated rather than confirmed.

That product is gone. In 2024 the company stripped AI features out of its free tier, cut staff, and started steering toward sales and marketing teams. In early 2025 it gave up on consumer slides entirely. The AI presentation product was shut down on **30 April 2025**.

What exists today under the "Tome" name is not a presentation tool. The original founders, Keith Peiris and Henri Liriani, spent a year in stealth and launched **Lightfield**, an AI-native CRM for sales teams — a completely different product. Separately, the **Tome brand itself was acquired by AngelList** in 2025, which folded the document-summarisation technology into its fund-admin backend. Neither is a slide-maker.

So the honest answer to "should I use Tome for presentations?" is: you can't. This review exists to close the loop for anyone who still has Tome on a 2023-era shortlist.

## What it costs in Australia

Nothing — because there is nothing to buy. There is no current Tome presentation plan, no free tier, no Pro tier, and no Australian billing. For the record, here is what the tool charged before it was discontinued, and what its successor charges now.

| Plan | Status | Price (as last seen) | AUD basis |
| --------------------------------------- | ---------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------- |
| Tome Free (presentations) | **Discontinued 30 Apr 2025** | Free; AI removed from free tier in 2024 | N/A — product sunset |
| Tome Pro (presentations) | **Discontinued 30 Apr 2025** | \~US$16/user/mo billed annually (US$20 monthly), as last published before sunset | No AUD billing ever offered |
| Lightfield (successor CRM — not slides) | Live, unrelated product | US$36/user/mo (Startup) to US$99/user/mo (Pro) | Sales CRM, out of scope for this category |

**Basis:** US$1 ≈ A$1.40 (September 2026). GST treatment is moot — there is no Australian presentation product to invoice. The old Pro pricing is included for context only and should not be treated as a live quote.

## How it works in practice

It doesn't, anymore. If you visit a "Tome" link today you'll either hit a dead page, a redirect, or AngelList/Lightfield material that has nothing to do with making a deck.

The practical lesson for Australian operators is the one that bit Tome's users hardest: it was **web-only, with no offline file**. When the product sunset, anyone who hadn't manually exported their decks lost them outright. There was no .pptx sitting in a folder to fall back on. If you are choosing an AI slide tool today, that is the failure mode to design against — favour tools that export clean PowerPoint or PDF you actually own.

## What it does well

Being fair to the product as it existed in its prime, before judging it as a 2026 buy:

- **The scrolling "story" format was genuinely novel.** For web-first pitches and portfolios, the page-style layout looked sharper than a recycled PowerPoint.
- **Fast first drafts.** Prompt-to-deck in roughly a couple of minutes was a real speed-up over a blank slide.
- **It moved the category.** Tome proved the demand that Gamma and others now serve. Its DNA is in the tools that survived it.

None of this is a reason to choose it today. All three points are historical.

## What it doesn't do well

This is the part that matters.

- **It no longer exists as a presentation tool.** The single biggest flaw: you cannot sign up, pay, or make a slide. A review can't get more disqualifying than that.
- **It deleted user data on shutdown.** Decks not exported before 30 April 2025 were permanently lost. For an Australian business that kept a client pitch only inside Tome, that is gone.
- **No Australian footing at any point.** No AUD billing, no stated Australian data residency, no local support — even when the product was live.
- **The brand is now ambiguous and confusing.** "Tome" today points to an AngelList asset and an unrelated CRM (Lightfield). Searching for it leads Australians in circles.
- **A track record of pulling features.** Even before the full shutdown, the company removed AI from the free tier and pivoted away from its core users. That is a reliability signal, not a one-off.

## Australian fit

There is no Australian fit to assess, because there is no Australian-accessible product. While it ran, Tome billed in USD only and we could find no published Australian data-residency commitment or local support channel — and with the product now gone, there is no live vendor page left to confirm one either way. Australian GST treatment is irrelevant now: nothing is being sold to Australian customers under this name as a presentation tool.

For data-sensitive Australian work — anything client-confidential, or touching the Privacy Act 1988 — the shutdown is the cautionary tale. A web-only tool with no local file and no residency guarantee is exactly the kind of dependency that leaves you exposed when a US vendor changes its mind.

## Alternatives

Because Tome is off the table, here is where Australians should actually start.

- **Gamma** — the most direct heir to Tome's scrolling, AI-generated format, and the one that survived and grew while Tome folded. The natural first stop for most Australian small businesses. See our [Gamma review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-gamma-australia-2026/).
- **Canva (Magic Design for presentations)** — Australian-built, AUD billing, GST-compliant invoicing, and a local data story most rivals can't match. For Australian operators it's the safe default. See our Canva Magic Studio review.
- **Microsoft Copilot in PowerPoint** — if your business already runs Microsoft 365, you generate slides inside the file format you already own, billed through your existing AUD agreement. See our Microsoft Copilot review.

## Bottom line

Tome is a closed chapter. As a presentation tool it was shut down on 30 April 2025, it deleted decks that users hadn't exported, and its name now belongs to two unrelated products. There is no version of "try Tome for your next pitch" that we can recommend to an Australian in 2026.

If you arrived here from an old listicle, cross it off and start with **Gamma** or, for the strongest Australian fit, **Canva**. The score below reflects a product you cannot buy, use, or trust with your files — not the tool it once was.

Update history
- **9 Oct 2026** — Re-checked for the AUD-claim queue (#378): tome.app and tome.app/pricing return 404 on an Australian connection, the presentation product remains discontinued, and there is still nothing to buy, so the pre-shutdown USD figures in the table stay as the historical record; `aud_native: false` set (Tome only ever billed in USD). Lightfield, the successor CRM, is out of scope and its site did not resolve on 9 Oct, so that row is unverified today. Capture: `Dossiers/captures/tome-pricing-2026-10-09.txt`.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I still use Tome in Australia?

No. Tome's AI presentation product was sunset on 30 April 2025\. You can't sign up, pay, or make a slide. The "Tome" name now points to an AngelList asset and an unrelated sales CRM (Lightfield) — neither is a slide-maker.

### What happened to my Tome decks?

If you didn't export them before 30 April 2025, they're gone — permanently deleted on shutdown. Tome was web-only with no offline file, so there was no PowerPoint to fall back on. That's the failure mode to design against when choosing any AI slide tool.

### What should Australians use instead?

Start with Gamma, the direct heir to Tome's scrolling format that survived and grew. For the strongest Australian fit — AUD billing, GST-compliant invoicing, a local data story — Canva's Magic Design is the safe default. Microsoft Copilot in PowerPoint suits Microsoft 365 users.

### Did Tome ever bill in AUD?

No. Even while live, Tome billed in USD only, with no published Australian data residency or local support. Its old Pro plan was \~US$16/user/month billed annually. None of that is buyable now — the figures are historical context only.

Pre-shutdown Pro pricing is drawn from archived third-party pricing pages, and the user-count figures are vendor-stated and unaudited — both should be read as historical, not as a live quote. The verdict rests on the shutdown itself, which is corroborated across multiple independent sources and the founders' own Lightfield launch.*
