> **Verdict (TL;DR):** tldraw is the best free infinite-canvas whiteboard available right now, and its "Make Real" AI feature — which turns a rough sketch into working HTML in seconds — is genuinely impressive. For Australians it's free, runs in the browser without a login, and needs no subscription. The catch: it's primarily an SDK for developers building products, the hosted canvas wipes data after 24 hours unless you self-host, and the AI features require your own API key from a US provider. Worth using; understand what it actually is first.

## What tldraw is

tldraw is an open-source infinite-canvas library built for React. There are two ways to encounter it: as the free web app at tldraw.com (a polished whiteboard anyone can use without signing up), and as the SDK that developers licence to embed an infinite canvas inside their own products.

The web app is what most users see first. You open it in a browser, start drawing, and share a link. Companies including ClickUp, Google, Shopify, Replit, and Runway use the SDK inside their own products — which tells you how well-regarded the underlying technology is.

The AI piece — "Make Real" — sits on top of the canvas. You sketch a rough wireframe: boxes for buttons, squiggly lines for text, a rectangle for a header. You select the sketch, click Make Real, and tldraw sends it to an AI vision model (GPT-4o by default, though it also supports Anthropic and Google models) with instructions to generate working HTML, CSS, and JavaScript that matches the sketch. The result renders in an iframe beside your canvas, usually within ten seconds.

That's the core loop: sketch, generate, iterate. Draw on top of the rendered output, click Make Real again, and it produces a revised version.

## What it costs in Australia

| ------------------------ | ------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| tldraw.com canvas | Free | No login required. Data wiped after 24 hours. |
| Make Real (AI) | Free app, but bring your own API key | Uses OpenAI GPT-4o Vision via your own OpenAI account — you pay OpenAI's usage rates directly. Approx. USD $0.01–$0.05 per generation (estimate). |
| SDK — hobby licence | Free | Non-commercial personal projects only. Apply via tldraw.dev. |
| SDK — startup licence | Value-based pricing, sales-led | Discounted pricing available for early-stage companies. 100-day free trial available. |
| SDK — commercial licence | Value-based pricing, sales-led | No public price list. Contact sales. |

**AUD note:** tldraw publishes no AUD pricing because the hosted canvas is free and SDK pricing is negotiated. If you're paying OpenAI for API calls to use Make Real, OpenAI charges in USD and adds 10% GST for Australian accounts at checkout (confirm GST treatment at checkout). At today's rate of \~AUD 1.40 to the USD, a typical Make Real session costs cents, not dollars.

## How it works in practice

Opening tldraw.com requires no account. The canvas loads in under two seconds. You get drawing tools, sticky notes, arrows, shapes, and a frame tool for organising work. Real-time collaboration works by sharing a URL — no invite flow, no seats to manage.

Make Real requires a small setup. You open the Make Real panel, paste in your OpenAI API key (stored in your browser's local storage — it never leaves your machine), and then start sketching. The workflow is:

1. Draw a rough UI layout — login form, dashboard, landing page, whatever you need.
2. Select the sketch with the pointer tool.
3. Click Make Real.
4. In ten seconds or so, a working HTML page appears beside your sketch.
5. You can click links and buttons in the generated output. It's live, not a screenshot.
6. Draw annotations on top of the output ("make this button bigger," "add a nav bar"), select it, click Make Real again.

The output quality depends on sketch clarity. A clearly labelled wireframe with text descriptions produces much better code than a mess of unlabelled boxes. The AI does not read minds — it reads what you drew.

## What it does well

**The free canvas is best-in-class.** As a pure whiteboard, tldraw is fast, clean, and genuinely good. The multiplayer collaboration works without friction. No other free tool matches it for speed and reliability.

**Make Real works as advertised.** Turning a sketched login form into a functioning HTML login form in under fifteen seconds is real value. Designers and developers who want a quick proof-of-concept — before committing to code or a full design tool — get a meaningful shortcut.

**Bring-your-own-key model is honest.** tldraw doesn't build a margin into AI calls. You pay your AI provider directly. For low-volume use this costs almost nothing.

**Self-hosting is supported and documented.** If you want persistent data and full control over where your canvas content lives, tldraw's sync server can be self-hosted via Cloudflare or your own backend. The template is public on GitHub. For privacy-conscious Australian businesses, self-hosting is a real option.

**The SDK ecosystem is substantial.** For developers building collaborative tools, tldraw's 48,000+ GitHub stars and 266,000+ weekly npm downloads reflect a genuinely healthy and maintained project.

## What it doesn't do well

**The hosted canvas is not persistent.** Data on tldraw.com is wiped after 24 hours. If you want to keep your work you need to export it or self-host. This is not a collaborative design tool with project management — it's a scratch pad with a 24-hour clock.

**Make Real is experimental, not production-ready.** The HTML it generates is functional but not clean code you'd ship. Expect to edit what comes out. Complex layouts with many components often come back with errors or misinterpretations. It's a prototyping accelerator, not a design handoff tool.

**No account system on the free product.** No login means no saved projects, no version history, no teams. For anything beyond a quick brainstorm you're either self-hosting or using tldraw embedded inside another product.

**Data residency is offshore.** The hosted tldraw.com runs on Cloudflare infrastructure, which distributes data globally across US and international data centres. Canvas content you don't explicitly export is stored offshore (no explicit Australian data region stated). For sensitive business content, self-hosting is the answer.

**AI pricing is in USD via a third party.** Make Real's costs go through your OpenAI account, billed in USD. Not a major issue, but Australian users should note the currency and GST treatment.

## Australian fit

tldraw fits an Australian audience well for lightweight use. The core whiteboard is free, browser-based, and needs no credit card. For design workshops, sprint planning, or quick wireframing with a remote team, it does the job without requiring an Australian-specific plan.

The complications are for heavier use. If you're handling sensitive commercial or client data on the canvas, the 24-hour wipe and Cloudflare's offshore infrastructure are limitations. Self-hosting solves both — but requires a developer to set it up.

Make Real's dependency on an OpenAI API key is a minor friction for non-technical Australians. If you've never created an OpenAI account, there's a setup step before AI features work.

There is no Australian support line, no AUD billing option, and no stated AU data region for the hosted product. That's not unusual for a free open-source tool — but it does cap the Australian Fit score.

## Alternatives

- [**Figma AI**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/figma-ai-review-australia-2026/) — the industry-standard design tool now has AI features, including generative UI components. Better for teams doing serious design work; costs more and requires an account.
- [**Canva Magic Studio**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/canva-magic-studio-review-australia-2026/) — broader creative AI suite with strong Australian market presence and AUD pricing. Not a whiteboard tool, but covers similar "turn ideas into visuals" territory.
- [**Uizard**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-uizard-australia-2026/) — specifically designed for turning hand-drawn wireframes into app mockups with AI. More polished output than Make Real, but costs from USD $12/month.

## Bottom line

tldraw is the right answer if you want a free, no-login collaborative whiteboard, and the Make Real feature will genuinely impress any designer or developer who tries it. Understand the limits: canvas data is ephemeral on the free hosted product, AI features need an OpenAI API key, and the offshore infrastructure means sensitive content should go self-hosted.

For an Australian solo designer prototyping fast, or a developer exploring the SDK for a product build: use it. For a team that wants persistent projects and AU data residency: look at Figma or Canva for the design work, or commit to self-hosting tldraw's sync server.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is tldraw free to use in Australia?

Yes. The tldraw.com whiteboard is completely free — no account, no credit card, no subscription. You can open it in any browser and start collaborating immediately. The AI 'Make Real' feature is also free to use in the app, but requires you to supply your own OpenAI API key. You pay OpenAI directly for API usage, which typically costs a few cents per generation.

### Does tldraw store data in Australia?

The free hosted tldraw.com runs on Cloudflare's global infrastructure, with no stated Australian data region. Canvas data is also wiped after 24 hours on the free hosted product. For persistent storage with Australian data residency, you would need to self-host tldraw's sync server on Australian cloud infrastructure — tldraw provides open-source templates and documentation to do this.

### What is tldraw's Make Real feature and how accurate is it?

Make Real is an experimental AI feature that converts a hand-drawn wireframe sketch into working HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. You draw a rough UI layout on the canvas, select it, click Make Real, and an AI vision model (GPT-4o by default) generates functional code that renders beside your sketch within seconds. It works best with clearly labelled sketches. Complex or ambiguous layouts often produce imperfect output that needs editing. It's a useful prototyping accelerator, not a production code generator.
