## What Supermaven was

Supermaven was an AI code completion plugin for VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, and Neovim. It was built by Jacob Jackson, the former lead of GitHub Copilot, and launched in 2023\. Its defining technical claim was a 1 million token context window — far beyond what most competitors offered at the time — and sub-10ms inference latency that made completions feel near-instant.

The plugin worked as an editor extension. It watched your keystrokes, indexed your codebase, and predicted what you were about to write. Unlike chat-based coding assistants, it focused purely on inline autocomplete. It did not have a chat interface, did not generate entire files on command, and did not run terminal commands. It did one thing and tried to do it faster than anyone else.

Supermaven attracted strong user loyalty among developers who found GitHub Copilot's suggestions slow or inaccurate. Its multi-file context meant it could suggest code that matched naming conventions and imports from across a project, not just the file currently open.

**This product is no longer available for new users.** The rest of this review explains what happened and what your options are.

---

## What it cost in Australia

Supermaven offered a free tier with limited completions and a paid Pro plan at USD $10/month (approximately AUD $14.00/month excluding GST; approximately AUD $15/month including GST at \~10%). Annual billing reduced that cost.

**All subscriptions were refunded** when the shutdown was announced on 21 November 2025\. Existing Neovim and JetBrains users received free ongoing inference "for the foreseeable future," though Supermaven confirmed no new signups would be accepted and agent features were discontinued immediately.

---

## How the acquisition happened

Anysphere — the company behind Cursor — acquired Supermaven in November 2024\. The acquisition was confirmed simultaneously by both companies via blog posts. The stated rationale: Supermaven's inference pipeline, including its sub-10ms latency architecture and million-token context model, would be integrated into Cursor Tab, Cursor's native autocomplete feature.

For roughly twelve months, Supermaven continued to operate as a separate product while the integration proceeded. On 21 November 2025, Supermaven published a short blog post announcing the sunset. VS Code users were directed to migrate to Cursor. Neovim and JetBrains users were told their inference would continue free of charge for an unspecified period, given the lack of a comparable Cursor integration for those editors.

No timeline was given for when free Neovim/JetBrains inference might end.

---

## What it did well (while it existed)

**Speed.** The sub-10ms response time was measurably faster than GitHub Copilot in independent developer testing. Developers who typed quickly reported fewer interruptions — the suggestion appeared before they needed it, not after a visible pause.

**Context window.** A 1 million token context window let Supermaven pull in far more of a codebase than most competitors. In practice, that meant suggestions matched project-wide naming patterns, not just the last few hundred lines.

**Editor breadth.** VS Code, JetBrains, and Neovim support was broader than some competitors offered. For Neovim users in particular, solid AI autocomplete options were limited, and Supermaven filled a real gap.

---

## What it didn't do well

**Scope.** Supermaven only did autocomplete. No chat, no agentic code generation, no terminal integration. Developers looking for a full AI coding workflow needed additional tools.

**Longevity.** Any tool that is acquired and shut down within 24 months is a risk for teams. Australian businesses that built Supermaven into their development workflow had to migrate on short notice.

**VS Code users got no continuity plan.** The recommendation to "migrate to Cursor" is reasonable, but Cursor is a full IDE replacement, not a VS Code plugin. That is a significant workflow change for teams standardised on VS Code.

---

## Australian fit

Supermaven was a US-based product. Code snippets and context were sent to Supermaven's cloud inference servers, located in the United States. There was no Australian data residency, no self-hosted option, and no APAC server region. For Australian businesses with code IP or compliance concerns, that was a material risk — the same risk that applies to most cloud-based AI coding tools.

The Privacy Act 2025 (Australia) requires organisations handling personal data to apply Australian Privacy Principles when transferring data offshore. If your codebase contained personal data (common in health, finance, or customer-facing systems), routing it through US servers without a data processing agreement raised compliance questions.

**Australian Fit: 1/5** — US-only infrastructure, no data residency, now discontinued.

## Alternatives

Since Supermaven is gone, here are the most relevant alternatives for Australian developers:

- [**Cursor**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/cursor-review-australia-2026/) — The acquirer's own product. Cursor integrates Supermaven's autocomplete technology into a full AI code editor. The logical migration path for VS Code users.
- [**GitHub Copilot**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/github-copilot-review-australia-2026/) — Microsoft's tool, widely used in Australian enterprises. Broader IDE support than Cursor. Microsoft has Australian data residency options via Azure for enterprise customers.
- [**Tabnine**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-tabnine-australia-2026/) — Offers a self-hosted deployment option, which is a meaningful AU-fit advantage for teams with strict IP or compliance requirements.

---

## Bottom line

Supermaven was technically impressive — fast, context-aware, and well-regarded by developers who used it. It is also gone. New users cannot sign up. VS Code users have been told to move to Cursor.

If you are researching AI code completion tools for your team, do not evaluate Supermaven. Evaluate Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or Tabnine instead. If you are a Neovim or JetBrains user who was on Supermaven, you currently receive free inference — but that comes with no timeline guarantee.

**Recommendation: Do not adopt. Migrate to Cursor or GitHub Copilot.**

| Value for Money | 1/5 | Product is discontinued; no new purchases possible |
| Ease of Use | 4/5 | Was genuinely simple to install and use — one of its genuine strengths |
| Feature Depth | 2/5 | Autocomplete only; no chat, no agentic features; now discontinued |
| Australian Fit | 1/5 | US infrastructure only, no data residency, product no longer available |
| Reliability & Support | 0/5 | Shut down with 24 months of existence; no ongoing support for new users |
| **Total** | **8/25** | **⭐⭐ Below Average — Discontinued product** |

*Note: Reliability & Support scores 0 because the product no longer accepts new users and the shutdown demonstrated the inherent risk of narrow single-feature tools dependent on venture funding.*

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Supermaven still available in Australia?

No. Supermaven officially shut down on 21 November 2025 after being acquired by Anysphere (the maker of Cursor) in November 2024\. New sign-ups are not accepted. Existing VS Code users were told to migrate to Cursor.

### What happened to Supermaven after the Cursor acquisition?

Anysphere integrated Supermaven's autocomplete technology — including its sub-10ms inference pipeline and 1 million token context window — into Cursor Tab. The standalone Supermaven product was then sunset in November 2025, roughly one year after the acquisition.

### What should Australian developers use instead of Supermaven?

The most direct replacement is Cursor, which now incorporates Supermaven's autocomplete technology. GitHub Copilot is the other leading option and has broader IDE support. Tabnine is worth considering for teams with strict data residency requirements, as it offers a self-hosted deployment option.
