> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Cody is a capable, codebase-aware AI coding assistant with a genuine edge — it reads context across many repositories, not just the file you're staring at. But Sourcegraph killed its free and solo-developer plans in mid-2025 and folded Cody into an enterprise-only platform that starts at US$16,000 and bills in US dollars. For a Melbourne dev shop of three, the door is shut. For a 50-engineer Australian company already drowning in a big monorepo, it's worth a sales call — but only with your data-residency questions written down first.

## What Sourcegraph Cody is

Cody is an AI coding assistant from Sourcegraph, the code-search company. It plugs into your editor and does the now-familiar things: chat about your code, autocomplete, suggest edits, find and fix bugs. The difference is the engine underneath. Cody sits on top of Sourcegraph's code-search platform, so instead of only seeing the file open in front of you, it can pull relevant functions, types and documentation from across your whole codebase — including multiple separate repositories at once.

That matters for one specific reader: someone working inside a large, sprawling codebase where the answer to "how does this work" lives in five repos, not one. For a solo developer on a small project, the advantage mostly evaporates.

There's a catch that shapes this entire review. In mid-2025 Sourcegraph discontinued the Cody Free and Cody Pro plans. New signups closed on 25 June 2025 and existing free and pro accounts were terminated on 23 July 2025\. Cody now exists only as part of Sourcegraph's Enterprise platform. For individual developers, Sourcegraph now points you at a separate product called Amp.

## What it costs in Australia

There is no Australian pricing, no AUD billing, and no published per-seat number you can sign up for online. Cody is sold inside Sourcegraph Enterprise, and the public pricing page lists only a starting figure.

| Plan | List price (vendor) | \~AUD ex-GST | Notes |

| Cody Pro (solo) | Discontinued | — | Same dates; Sourcegraph now recommends Amp instead |
| Sourcegraph Enterprise (includes Cody) | "Starting at US$16,000" | \~A$22,470 | Annual; scales with team size; includes AI-feature credits |
| Cody Enterprise, per seat | \~US$59/user/mo (third-party figure) | \~A$83/mo | Per-seat figure widely cited by third parties; **not** found on Sourcegraph's own pricing page; annual contract |

**AUD basis:** conversions use USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026) and are shown ex-GST. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; an unregistered buyer should allow \~10% on top. The US$16,000 floor is confirmed on Sourcegraph's own pricing page (primary), where it is listed as an annual figure that includes credits for AI features and scales with team size. The US$59/user/month per-seat figure appears across third-party reviews but does not appear on any Sourcegraph-owned page, so it should be read as an unconfirmed third-party number, not a vendor quote. How — or whether — Australian GST is invoiced on a US-dollar enterprise contract will depend on how Sourcegraph bills an Australian entity, so treat the AUD figures as indicative conversions rather than a billed price.

The honest summary: you cannot find out what Cody costs your team without talking to sales. For a publication that prizes specific numbers, that's a mark against it.

## How it works in practice

You install the Cody extension in VS Code, JetBrains, or Visual Studio (the Visual Studio build is marked experimental), or use the web app. Once connected to your organisation's Sourcegraph instance, Cody can chat with full repository and file context, suggest edits as you move your cursor, run customisable prompts for repetitive tasks, and explain or debug unfamiliar code.

The standout in real use is the context retrieval. Ask Cody why a function behaves a certain way and it can reach into related repositories to answer, rather than guessing from the 40 lines on your screen. Admins can also set context filters to exclude specific repositories — useful if some code must never touch the AI.

On models: Sourcegraph's own docs describe Cody as using "all the latest LLMs" and let enterprise admins choose the model, but those public docs don't name the exact model line-up. So we can't tie Cody to specific model versions (Claude, GPT or Gemini) from a primary source — if a particular model matters to your team, confirm the current options with Sourcegraph directly.

## What it does well

- **Multi-repository context.** Cody pulls relevant code from across many repos at once. In a large enterprise monorepo this is a real, measurable advantage over tools that only see your local files.
- **Editor coverage.** First-class support for VS Code and JetBrains, plus Visual Studio (experimental) and a web app. Most Australian teams will be covered.
- **Admin control over context.** Context filters let admins exclude sensitive repositories from the AI entirely — a sensible guardrail for regulated work.
- **No training on your code.** Sourcegraph states it does not use your data to train models. For Enterprise customers this is a stated guarantee, which matters for any AU business handling client code.
- **Deployment flexibility.** Sourcegraph's pricing page lists self-hosted deployment alongside its managed cloud, so teams with strict requirements can run it in their own infrastructure. The finer detail — how far the self-hosted option goes, and whether a fully air-gapped install is supported — isn't spelled out publicly, so confirm the specifics with sales if isolation is a hard requirement.

## What it doesn't do well

- **It abandoned the solo and small-team market.** Killing Free and Pro in 2025 means the freelancer, the two-person startup, and the curious individual have no on-ramp. You're either an enterprise buyer or you're using a different product.
- **Pricing is opaque and US-dollar only.** A US$16,000 starting point, no published per-seat price you can trust, no AUD billing. You can't budget without a sales call.
- **No Australian data residency story.** Nothing on Sourcegraph's primary pages confirms Australian-hosted data or local infrastructure. AU teams with data-sovereignty obligations should raise this explicitly with sales and get any commitment in writing.
- **The "use Amp instead" split is confusing.** Sourcegraph now sells Cody to enterprises and pushes Amp at individuals. Buyers have to work out which Sourcegraph product they're even meant to want.
- **Value is concentrated.** If your codebase isn't large and multi-repo, you're paying enterprise money for an advantage you won't use.

## Australian fit

Weak. There is no AUD billing, no published Australian pricing, and no primary-source confirmation of Australian data residency. Support and contracting run through Sourcegraph's US-centric enterprise sales motion. The no-training-on-your-data stance is welcome and relevant to AU businesses, and self-hosted deployment could satisfy a sovereignty requirement — but both need confirming in writing before any Australian team in finance, legal, health or government signs. The product isn't hostile to Australians; it simply wasn't built with us in mind, and the enterprise-only pivot makes the gap wider for the small operators this publication serves.

## Alternatives

- **GitHub Copilot** — the obvious default. Cheaper, has real individual and business plans you can sign up for online, and broad editor support. Less codebase-wide context than Cody, but a far easier on-ramp for Australian teams of any size.
- **Claude** — not an IDE plugin, but for many Australian developers a strong general coding assistant via chat, with clear per-seat pricing and no enterprise-only wall.
- **Amp (Sourcegraph)** — Sourcegraph's own recommendation for individuals now that Cody Pro is gone. Worth noting if you liked Cody's lineage but aren't an enterprise buyer. \[Not yet reviewed by The AI Directory.\]

## Bottom line

Cody is a genuinely good tool wearing the wrong pricing for most of our readers. The codebase-wide context is real and, in a big multi-repo environment, hard to match. But Sourcegraph has decided Cody is for enterprises, full stop — and it shows in the US$16,000 floor, the missing AUD billing, and the absent Australian data-residency story. If you run a 50-plus-engineer Australian company with a tangled monorepo, book the sales call and bring your sovereignty questions. Everyone else — freelancers, small studios, curious individuals — should look at GitHub Copilot first and move on. Good tool, wrong shop for most Australians.

Update history
- **1 Oct 2026** — Sourcegraph's pricing page, checked from Australia, still offers a single Enterprise plan starting at US$16,000 a year (a minimum annual contract that includes credits for AI features), sold through sales. No change to this review's pricing.
- **21 Sep 2026** — **The stated conversion basis was the retired rule, written out in full: “AUD ≈ 1.40 × USD as a gross-up, plus a notional 10% on top.”** our GST rule retired the notional 10%, because a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service. The basis note now reads USD→AUD 1.4045 (ECB reference rate, 18 September 2026), ex-GST, and the AUD column header loses “(gross-up; GST unconfirmed)”. The Enterprise floor moves **\~A$25,280 → \~A$22,470** — and the old figure was not even the rule it claimed: US$16,000 at 1.40 plus 10% is A$24,640, and A$25,280 is a ratio of 1.58 that matches no basis this publication has used. The per-seat row at \~A$83 was already correct and is untouched. **No USD figure moved and no score changed.** Superseded figure kept visible per our price-history rule; `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.
- **20 Jun 2026** — First reviewed.
- **24 Sep 2026** — **The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was.** The header read *“gross-up; GST unconfirmed”* and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045\. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, **141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10**. **No figure changed here; only the description of them did.** Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: *gross-up* names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and *GST unconfirmed* is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is **not charged GST** on an imported digital service. **No USD price moved and no score changed.** `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Sourcegraph Cody available in Australia?

Yes, but only as part of Sourcegraph's enterprise platform. The free and solo-developer plans were terminated on 23 July 2025, so there's no on-ramp for freelancers or small AU teams.

### Does Cody bill in AUD?

No. There's no AUD billing and no published per-seat price you can sign up for — Sourcegraph Enterprise starts at US$16,000 annually and is sold through sales. GST treatment is unconfirmed.

### Is there a free plan?

Not any more. Cody Free and Cody Pro were discontinued in mid-2025\. Individual developers are now pointed at Sourcegraph's separate Amp product instead.

### Is my code stored in Australia?

No primary source confirms Australian-hosted data. Sourcegraph does state it doesn't train on your code, and self-hosted deployment is offered — but AU teams with sovereignty needs should get both confirmed in writing.

### Is Cody worth it for Australian teams?

Only for large companies with sprawling multi-repo codebases, where its cross-repository context is a genuine edge. Smaller teams should look at GitHub Copilot first — cheaper, with real plans you can sign up for online.
