> **The verdict:** Sapia.ai is the most credible AI interviewing tool we have looked at for Australian employers, and it is one of ours — built in Melbourne, used by Qantas and Woolworths. It runs untimed, text-only chat interviews that candidates genuinely seem to like, and it has done more public work on bias and fairness than almost anyone in the category. But it is enterprise software, not a tool you sign up for on a Tuesday. Pricing is a sales conversation, volumes are high, and one detail every Australian buyer should nail down — where your candidate data actually lives — is not spelled out on the website. **Worth a serious look if you hire at volume. Skip it if you hire a handful of people a year.** Score: 19/25 — ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good.

## What it is

Sapia.ai is an AI hiring platform built around a single sharp idea: replace the first-round phone screen with a structured, text-based chat interview that every candidate takes in the same way.

A candidate gets a link, opens it on their phone, and answers a set of open questions by typing. No video. No camera. No timer. Sapia's models read the written answers, score them against a competency model for the role, and hand the recruiter a shortlist with an explanation attached. Every applicant gets personalised feedback at the end, whether they progress or not.

The company was founded in Melbourne in 2018 (originally as PredictiveHire) by Barb Hyman, who remains CEO. In late 2022 it raised a A$17 million Series A from Woolworths and Macquarie Capital — a useful signal, given Woolworths is also a customer. Sapia now runs offices in Melbourne, Sydney, London and Chicago, but the engineering and the origin story are Australian.

This is not a general HR suite. It does one job — high-volume first-round interviewing and assessment — and it is built for employers screening hundreds or thousands of applicants, not for a small business filling one role.

## What it costs in Australia (AUD + GST)

Here is the honest answer: **Sapia does not publish its prices.** There is no pricing page, no plan table, no self-serve checkout. Every deal is a quote, scoped to your hiring volume and the integrations you need.

Third-party resellers and software directories float figures — entry tiers "from about US$1 per interview" with a 100-interview monthly minimum, and enterprise contracts in the six figures. None of that is confirmed by Sapia, so treat it as rumour, not a rate card. Reported average enterprise contract values sit around US$100,000–150,000 a year, which tells you the shape of the customer they want: a Qantas, not a corner cafe.

On GST and billing currency: because pricing is bespoke and the company is global, **we cannot confirm whether an Australian buyer is invoiced in AUD or USD, or how GST is handled**. As a Melbourne-headquartered company selling to Australian enterprises, AUD invoicing through an Australian entity is plausible — but you should get it in writing. If you are quoted in US dollars, the real cost to an Australian budget is roughly the USD figure × 1.40, ex-GST on the local supply. Confirm both before you sign.

For a publication that puts AUD-native pricing front and centre, this opacity is a genuine mark against the tool — not because the software is bad, but because you cannot compare it to anything without picking up the phone.

## How it works / features (the specifics)

Three things define how Sapia actually operates:

**1\. The chat interview is text-only and untimed.** Candidates type their answers to a fixed set of open questions — the same questions, in the same order, for everyone applying to that role. There is no video recording and no camera. Crucially, Sapia assesses *what* a candidate writes, not how they look or sound. It explicitly does not do facial analysis or voice-tone analysis — the two techniques that have landed other "AI interview" vendors in regulatory trouble. Candidates answer at their own pace; Sapia's published reasoning is that timing the assessment would penalise people for anxiety, language background or neurotype rather than for the job.

**2\. Scoring runs on validated language models against a competency framework.** Sapia uses natural language processing and machine learning trained on a very large interview dataset — the company cites more than 3.5 million interviews and billions of words. Answers are scored on job-relevant competencies and a structured personality read (built on the HEXACO model). A newer agent, "Jas," turns a job description into a weighted competency model so the scoring maps to the actual role.

**3\. Everything is wrapped in explainability.** Each candidate receives written feedback and personality insights at the end of the interview — unusual in a category where most people hear nothing. Recruiters get the reasoning behind a score, and Sapia has shipped a generative-AI assistant (branded SAIGE/Tia depending on the surface) to explain decisions in plain language and help build shortlists.

It plugs into existing recruitment systems — it has a published integration with SmartRecruiters, for instance — so it sits in front of an ATS rather than replacing one. Sapia says it supports interviews in 50+ languages.

## What it does well

**Candidate experience is the standout.** Sapia reports an average candidate rating around 9 out of 10 across millions of interviews, with a large share leaving unprompted written feedback. That is not normal for hiring tech, where the candidate is usually the person the software treats worst. The untimed, text-only, mobile-first format removes a lot of what makes screening miserable — the awkward phone tag, the on-camera nerves, the sense of being ghosted.

**It has done the fairness homework.** Sapia publishes a "FAIR" framework (Unbiased, Valid, Explainable, Inclusive) and has released an *independent* bias audit — third-party scrutiny most vendors avoid. It runs adverse-impact tests such as the four-fifths rule and reports outcomes like 98% hiring equity for candidates with disability on the blind, untimed design. You can argue with any single number, but the posture — publish the audit, invite the scrutiny — is the right one for a tool making decisions about people's livelihoods.

**It is genuinely proven at scale in Australia.** Woolworths, Qantas, Suncorp and Starbucks Australia are among named users. This is not a pilot-stage curiosity; it is screening real applicants for some of the country's largest employers.

## Where it falls short

No tool is above scrutiny, and an AI tool that scores job applicants deserves the hardest look we can give it.

**The pricing wall is real.** No published rates, high minimum volumes, and enterprise-style contracts put Sapia out of reach for the small and mid-sized businesses that make up most of our readership. If you hire ten people a year, this is not your tool, and you will not even get a meaningful quote.

**"Fair" is a claim you must keep auditing, not a setting you switch on.** Sapia's transparency is real, but any AI that scores candidates carries legal weight in Australia. Algorithmic hiring decisions sit squarely under the *Fair Work Act*, federal and state anti-discrimination law, and the Privacy Act. A vendor's bias audit does not transfer that liability to the vendor — the employer is still accountable for the outcome. Sapia gives you good evidence to work with; it does not give you a free pass. You should run your own adverse-impact monitoring on your own roles, not rely solely on the vendor's aggregate figures. **AI screening does not replace qualified HR and legal advice on your hiring process.**

**Data residency is unconfirmed.** For a tool ingesting the written answers — effectively personal information — of thousands of Australian job applicants, where that data is stored matters under the Privacy Act and the Australian Privacy Principles. Sapia runs a public trust centre, which is a good sign, but we could not confirm from the public pages whether Australian candidate data is hosted in an Australian region or what certifications (ISO 27001, SOC 2) currently apply. Any Australian buyer should make data location and certification a contract question, not an assumption.

**It is narrow by design.** Sapia does one stage of hiring very well. It is not a full applicant tracking system, not an onboarding suite, and not a fit for senior or specialist roles where a structured first-round chat is the wrong instrument.

## Australian fit

On the things that are easy to verify, Sapia scores well. It is **Australian-built** — Melbourne-founded in 2018, still Melbourne-headquartered, backed by Woolworths and Macquarie, and deployed across marquee Australian employers. That is about as locally rooted as enterprise AI gets. AU-based sales and support are a reasonable expectation given the customer base, though, like pricing, the specifics are scoped per contract.

Two gaps stop it from being a clean five on local fit, and both are about transparency rather than capability. First, **AUD billing and GST treatment are unconfirmed** — likely fine, but get it in writing. Second, **candidate-data residency is unconfirmed** from public sources — a material question for any Australian employer subject to the Privacy Act. Neither is a red flag. Both are due-diligence items you must close before signing.

| --------------------- | --------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Value for Money | 3/5 | Capable, but opaque pricing and high minimums make value impossible to judge without a sales call; out of reach for SMBs. |
| Ease of Use | 4/5 | Candidate side is exceptional — link, type, done. It is still an enterprise deployment, not self-serve. |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | Best-in-class at its one job; deliberately narrow, with no ATS or onboarding breadth. |
| Australian Fit | 4/5 | Genuinely Melbourne-built and proven on AU enterprises; docked one point for unconfirmed AUD billing and data residency. |
| Reliability & Support | 4/5 | Millions of interviews, enterprise SLAs, published independent bias audit and FAIR framework. |
| **Total** | **19/25** | **⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good** |

**Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good (19/25).** Australian Fit clears the 4/5 gate, so the rating is not capped — Sapia simply lands at four stars on its own merits.

## Bottom line

**If you are a large Australian employer hiring at volume** — retail, hospitality, contact centres, graduate intakes — Sapia.ai is the strongest AI interviewer we have assessed, and the fact that it is Australian-built is a real plus. Shortlist it, then make data residency, AUD billing and your own adverse-impact testing explicit conditions of the contract.

**If you are a small or mid-sized business** hiring a handful of people a year, this is not your tool. The minimum volumes and enterprise pricing rule it out, and a structured chat interview is overkill for low-volume hiring. Look at lighter screening tools instead.

**If you are an HR or talent leader weighing the fairness question**, Sapia has done more public work on bias than its rivals — but treat that as evidence to build on, not liability you can outsource. Under Australian law, the hiring decision is still yours.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Sapia.ai an Australian company?

Yes, and that matters. Sapia was founded in Melbourne in 2018 (as PredictiveHire) by Barb Hyman, who is still CEO, and remains Melbourne-headquartered. Woolworths and Macquarie Capital backed its A$17 million Series A. It screens applicants for Qantas, Woolworths, Suncorp and Starbucks Australia — about as locally rooted as enterprise AI gets.

### What does Sapia.ai cost in Australia?

Sapia publishes no prices — every deal is a scoped quote. Third-party estimates float roughly US$1 per interview with a 100-interview monthly minimum, and enterprise contracts around US$100,000–150,000 a year, none confirmed by Sapia. AUD invoicing and GST treatment are also unconfirmed. If quoted in US dollars, budget roughly the figure × 1.40 ex-GST.

### Who should use Sapia.ai — and who shouldn't?

Large Australian employers hiring at volume — retail, hospitality, contact centres and graduate intakes — should shortlist it. It replaces the first-round phone screen with untimed, text-only chat interviews candidates rate around 9 out of 10\. Small and mid-sized businesses hiring a handful of people a year should skip it; minimum volumes and enterprise pricing rule it out.

### Is Sapia.ai safe and compliant for Australian employers to use?

Sapia has done the fairness homework — a published FAIR framework, an independent bias audit, and no facial or voice analysis. But under the Fair Work Act, anti-discrimination law and the Privacy Act, the employer stays accountable for hiring outcomes. Candidate-data residency is unconfirmed on public pages, so make it a contract question. Run your own adverse-impact testing. AI screening does not replace qualified HR and legal advice.

### What score did Sapia.ai get in our review?

19/25 — ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good. It earns four points each for ease of use, feature depth, Australian fit and reliability, with value for money at three because opaque pricing makes value impossible to judge. Australian Fit at 4/5 clears our gate; the tool loses points only for unconfirmed AUD billing and data residency.
