*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Verdict (TL;DR):** SaneBox does one thing well — it learns which senders matter to you and shunts the rest into a folder you check twice a day. It is genuinely useful if email noise is eating your mornings. But it bills in US dollars only, hosts on US infrastructure, and reads your message headers on its servers — so the Australian small business owner pays a foreign-exchange premium and parks email metadata offshore. Worth a 7-day trial if your inbox is out of control. Not a five-star buy for Australians.

## What SaneBox is

SaneBox is an AI email filter that sits on top of the inbox you already have. You don't install an app or switch email providers. It connects to Gmail, Microsoft 365, iCloud, Fastmail, or any IMAP/Exchange account, then sorts incoming mail by predicted importance.

The pitch is simple. Important email stays in your inbox. Everything else — newsletters, receipts, notifications, cold outreach — drops into a folder called **SaneLater**. You check that folder once or twice a day instead of being interrupted by every ping. SaneBox has been doing this since 2010, which makes it old by AI-tool standards. The "AI" here is behavioural machine learning, not a large language model.

It learns by watching what you do. Drag an email out of SaneLater and back to your inbox, and SaneBox marks that sender as important. Drag one the other way, and it learns the opposite. Over a week or two it gets accurate.

## What it costs in Australia

SaneBox bills in **US dollars**. There is no AUD pricing and no local billing entity, so your card issuer adds the foreign-exchange spread and possibly an international transaction fee. The conversions below use US$1 ≈ A$1.40 and show figures ex-GST (GST-registered businesses quoting an ABN are not charged GST; other buyers add \~10%)— but, as the GST note below explains, treat the AUD column as an indicative conversion, not a GST-inclusive quote.

| Plan | Accounts | Features | Price (USD/mo) | Approx AUD/mo (ex-GST) |
| ------ | -------- | -------- | -------------- | ---------------------- |
| Snack | 1 | 2 | US$9.49/mo | \~A$13 |
| Lunch | 2 | 6 | US$15.99/mo | \~A$22 |
| Dinner | 4 | All | US$42.99/mo | \~A$60 |

**Billing basis:** monthly, billed in USD (re-read in a browser 30 September 2026). Annual billing brings the plans to US$5.42, US$9.08 and US$26.58 a month, and two-year billing to US$4.54, US$7.46 and US$22.04 — the page loads on the two-year rate, so read the toggle. A **7-day free trial** runs across all plans, with no credit card required to start. SaneBox also advertises a 25% discount for education, non-profit, and government users.

**GST note:** As a US vendor with no AUD billing, SaneBox is unlikely to issue a GST-compliant tax invoice. Treat the spend as an overseas software subscription and check the treatment with your accountant before claiming it. The plan figures above match SaneBox's published Snack/Lunch/Dinner tiers; we cross-checked them against the vendor's pricing and help pages plus independent pricing trackers, because SaneBox's own pricing table did not render cleanly in our capture.

## How it works in practice

Setup takes about five minutes. You authorise SaneBox against your mailbox, it creates a few folders, and filtering starts within minutes. The first day is noisy — it guesses, and it gets some wrong. By day three or four the guesses are mostly right. By the end of the 7-day trial you'll know if it suits you.

The day-to-day payoff is real. If you get 80 emails a day and 60 are noise, SaneBox keeps those 60 out of your face. You triage them in one batch instead of 60 interruptions. A **digest email** summarises what landed in SaneLater, so nothing vanishes silently.

Beyond the core sort, the headline features are **SaneBlackHole** (drag a sender here once and you never see them again — a blunt instrument that beats hunting for unsubscribe links), **SaneReminders** (it nudges you to follow up when a sent email gets no reply), snooze, and **SaneAttachments** (auto-saves attachments to cloud storage). The features you get depend on your plan tier.

The privacy model matters and is a genuine strength: by default SaneBox **only reads email headers** — sender, subject, timestamp — not the body. Optional features that need the body retrieve it but, per the vendor, never store it. *Source: SaneBox security page.*

## What it does well

- **The core sort genuinely works.** After a short training period it reliably separates signal from noise. For a busy operator drowning in newsletters and notifications, that's hours back each week.
- **No migration, no new app.** It layers onto your existing Gmail or Microsoft 365 mailbox and syncs across every device, because the filtering happens server-side in the folders themselves.
- **Header-only by default.** It doesn't read your message bodies to do its main job. For anyone wary of an AI tool ingesting email content, that's a meaningfully lighter footprint than LLM-based inbox assistants.
- **SaneBlackHole is the best unsubscribe tool going.** One drag kills a sender forever. No clicking through unsubscribe pages that don't work.
- **It's stable and mature.** Fifteen years in market, broad provider support, and no sign of the feature thrash that sinks newer tools.

## What it doesn't do well

- **USD-only billing with no AUD option.** Every Australian pays the FX spread and likely an international card fee, and won't get a GST-compliant invoice. For a tool you pay for monthly, that friction adds up.
- **No Australian data residency.** SaneBox processes your email headers on its own servers, and its security page requires its data-centre provider to hold ISO accreditation but names no hosting region — there is no disclosed Australian (or any-country) residency option. Your sender/subject metadata leaves the country. Some AU businesses in regulated sectors can't accept that.
- **It's a filter, not an assistant.** It won't draft replies, summarise threads, or do anything generative. Against 2026 AI inbox tools that write for you, SaneBox can feel narrow. It sorts; it does not think.
- **The value is invisible until it isn't.** When it works, you forget it's there — which makes the monthly USD charge easy to resent. The benefit is real but hard to feel, so renewal can be a tougher sell than the trial.
- **Mis-sorts need babysitting early on.** During training it will tuck the occasional important email into SaneLater. If you don't check that folder daily in week one, you can miss something. The risk fades, but it's real at the start.

## Australian fit

This is where SaneBox loses ground. There is no AUD pricing, no Australian billing entity, no local support presence, and no Australian (or even disclosed) data residency. The product is competent and provider-agnostic, so it *functions* identically for an Australian as for an American — but "functions the same" isn't the same as "built for you."

For a sole trader or small business in marketing, property, or trades, the offshore metadata processing is probably an acceptable trade for a tidier inbox. For anyone in legal, finance, health, or government — where even email metadata can be sensitive — the lack of disclosed data residency is a genuine blocker worth raising with your IT or compliance person first. **Australian Fit: 2/5.**

## Alternatives

- **Microsoft Copilot** — if you're already on Microsoft 365, Copilot's inbox features summarise and draft email natively, with AUD billing through your existing Microsoft agreement. Different job (it writes; SaneBox sorts), but a stronger Australian buy on billing and residency.
- **ChatGPT** — not an inbox filter, but for drafting and triaging email content it does more thinking than SaneBox ever will. Pair it with your provider's built-in rules and you replicate part of SaneBox's value for free.
- **Native rules + a tidy unsubscribe habit** — Gmail and Outlook both have free filtering. They won't learn the way SaneBox does, but for a modest inbox they may be enough to skip the USD subscription entirely.

## Bottom line

SaneBox is a good, narrow tool that does exactly what it claims: it learns your inbox and keeps the noise out of it. If email overwhelm is a daily tax on your time, the 7-day trial is worth taking — you'll know inside a week whether it earns the spend.

But it is a US product paid for in US dollars, hosting your email metadata offshore, with no Australian billing or residency story. That's why it lands at **Good**, not better. Take the trial if your inbox is chaos. Walk away if your provider's built-in filters already cope, or if your sector can't park metadata overseas.

Update history
- **30 Sep 2026 — re-verified by browser; monthly prices rose and the trial halved.** `sanebox.com/pricing` on an Australian connection: monthly **Snack US$9.49, Lunch US$15.99, Dinner US$42.99** (the table had US$7, US$12, US$36); annual US$5.42 / US$9.08 / US$26.58 and two-year US$4.54 / US$7.46 / US$22.04 a month (the page loads on the two-year rate). The free trial is now **7 days**, not 14\. Account and feature counts hold. Table, billing note, four trial references and both pricing FAQs (body and schema) updated. Bare `$`, no `A$`. `aud_native: false` set. Score unchanged. - **20 Jun 2026** — First reviewed.
- **24 Sep 2026** — **The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was.** The header read *“gross-up; GST unconfirmed”* and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045\. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, **141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10**. **No figure changed here; only the description of them did.** Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: *gross-up* names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and *GST unconfirmed* is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is **not charged GST** on an imported digital service. **No USD price moved and no score changed.** `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is SaneBox available in Australia?

Yes. It layers onto the mailbox you already have — Gmail, Microsoft 365, iCloud, Fastmail or any IMAP/Exchange account — and works identically for Australians. There's no local billing entity or AU support presence, though; support is email-based and US-timezone.

### Does SaneBox charge in AUD?

No. Billing is USD only, with no AUD option, so your card issuer adds the FX spread and possibly an international transaction fee. Plans run from US$9.49/mo (Snack) to US$42.99/mo (Dinner) on monthly billing, less on annual or two-year billing. SaneBox is unlikely to issue a GST-compliant tax invoice.

### Is there a free plan or free trial?

There's a 7-day free trial across all plans, with no credit card required to start. There's no permanent free tier. SaneBox also advertises a 25% discount for education, non-profit and government users.

### Does SaneBox store data in Australia?

No. SaneBox processes your email headers on its own servers; its security page requires its data-centre provider to hold ISO accreditation but names no hosting region, so there's no disclosed Australian residency. Your sender/subject metadata leaves the country — a blocker for some regulated sectors.

### Who is SaneBox best for?

Busy operators in marketing, property or trades whose inbox is chaos — the core sort genuinely buys back hours, and it's header-only by default. It's a filter, not an assistant: it won't draft or summarise. Skip it if your provider's built-in filters already cope.
