> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Retell AI is a capable, developer-oriented voice agent platform that competes directly with Vapi on features and wins on pricing transparency. The pay-as-you-go model with no platform fees is genuinely good for teams starting out or running variable call volumes. The product is well-built. The Australian compliance situation is, however, no better than any other US-based platform: US data centres, no Do Not Call guidance, and multi-party call recording consent is your responsibility to manage.

## What Retell AI is

Retell AI is a San Francisco-based voice AI platform founded in 2023\. It provides the infrastructure layer for building AI agents that conduct phone calls — inbound, outbound, or both. Like Vapi, it is positioned firmly at developers and technical teams.

The key commercial difference from most competitors: no platform fee. You pay for what you use. Retell charges per minute, broken into its component costs: voice infrastructure, LLM, TTS, and telephony. An account starts with US$10 in free credits and 20 concurrent calls.

The product supports pre-built agent templates, a simulation testing environment (which lets you run test calls before going live), post-call analysis, AI quality assurance, and a visual conversation builder. On the enterprise side, Retell offers dedicated servers, HIPAA/BAA arrangements, SOC 2 compliance, custom data processing agreements, and custom concurrency scaling.

## What it costs in Australia

Retell's pricing is modular. The calculator on the pricing page lets you build up cost by component.

| Component | USD | AUD (approx ×1.40) | Notes |
| ------------------------------ | ----------------- | -------------------- | ------------------------------ |
| Retell voice infrastructure | US$0.055/min | \~A$0.077/min | Platform layer |
| TTS — Retell/Cartesia/OpenAI | US$0.015/min | \~A$0.021/min | ElevenLabs higher at $0.04/min |
| LLM — GPT-5 mini | US$0.012/min | \~A$0.001/min | Cheapest capable option |
| LLM — GPT-5.1 (recommended) | US$0.04/min | \~A$0.056/min | Mid-range quality |
| LLM — Claude 4.5 Sonnet | US$0.08/min | \~A$0.112/min | Higher quality |
| Telephony — Australia (Twilio) | US$0.015/min | \~A$0.021/min | PSTN rate |
| **Total (budget stack)** | **\~US$0.10/min** | **\~A$0.140/min** | GPT-5 mini + platform voices |
| **Total (mid-range stack)** | **\~US$0.13/min** | **\~A$0.182/min** | GPT-5.1 + Cartesia + AU Twilio |
| Additional concurrency | US$8/line/month | \~A$11.20/line/month | First 20 concurrent calls free |
| Phone number | US$2/month | \~A$2.80/month | Per number |
| Knowledge base | US$8/KB/month | \~A$11.20/KB/month | First 10 free |

A mid-range agent handling 500 calls per month of five minutes each runs to approximately A$500–$650/month in usage costs. That is before any telephony configuration or concurrency overages.

These are AUD conversions at approximately 1.40 USD. GST applies as a reverse-charge obligation for Australian business customers — you self-assess GST at 10% on the AUD equivalent. Confirm with your accountant.

## How it works in practice

Retell provides a web dashboard where developers configure agents, connect LLM and voice providers, and run simulation tests before deploying to live calls. The simulation testing environment is a genuine differentiator: you can test your agent in the browser before a single real call is made, which reduces the risk of shipping an embarrassing agent in front of customers.

The conversation builder (Retell's term for its visual flow editor) gives non-developers some visibility into the call logic, though actually building and modifying agents still requires developer involvement. Pre-built templates for common scenarios — appointment booking, customer support, lead qualification — give teams a starting point rather than a blank page.

Call analytics include full transcripts, call duration, sentiment indicators, and post-call summaries. The AI Quality Assurance feature (first 100 minutes free, then US$0.10/min) lets you automatically evaluate calls against custom rubrics — did the agent follow the script? did it collect the required information? did it offer a human transfer when appropriate?

## What it does well

**Transparent modular pricing.** Retell's cost calculator is genuinely useful. You see each component separately — infrastructure, TTS, LLM, telephony, add-ons — which makes real cost modelling possible before you commit. This is meaningfully better than platforms that bury the real cost.

**No platform fee.** For teams with variable call volume or who are still testing, paying only for what you use is a significant advantage. A startup running 50 calls per month pays only for those 50 calls — no US$299 monthly platform fee just for the privilege.

**Simulation testing.** The ability to run full test calls in a sandboxed environment before going live prevents expensive mistakes. Voice agents are hard to debug in production.

**Post-call analysis.** Automated call summaries, transcripts, and custom QA rubrics make it practical to run quality assurance at scale. A human reviewing 500 calls per month is impractical; an AI flagging the worst 5% for human review is not.

**Strong compliance infrastructure at enterprise tier.** SOC 2, HIPAA-ready (with BAA), GDPR-compliant, SSO, RBAC, PII removal. The enterprise offering is well-considered.

**Australian telephone support.** Australia (Twilio) appears explicitly in the telephony pricing dropdown, which confirms Australian PSTN numbers are supported.

## What it doesn't do well

**Still fundamentally developer-led.** Despite the templates and visual builder, Retell is not a product a non-technical person can deploy independently. You need a developer to set up integrations, manage API keys, and configure the agent logic.

**PII removal is an add-on at US$0.01/min** (\~A$0.001/min). For any business handling personal information on calls — which is almost all businesses — redacting PII from transcripts is not optional. Treating it as a chargeable add-on rather than a default is a poor design decision.

**The free $10 credit does not go far.** At US$0.10–0.13/min, ten dollars buys roughly 75–100 minutes of test calls. That is enough to validate the technology but not to run a meaningful pilot.

**Enterprise pricing is fully custom and opaque.** If you need dedicated infrastructure, custom SLAs, or HIPAA compliance, you need to contact sales. There is no indication of enterprise pricing ranges on the site.

## Australian fit

Retell AI's data infrastructure runs in the United States. This is the common position across US voice AI platforms — Retell is not unique here, but it is worth stating clearly.

**Data residency:** Call audio, transcripts, and analytics are processed and stored on US servers. There is no Australian data residency option (confirm at enterprise tier). For most Australian SMBs this is an accepted tradeoff. For organisations handling health data (Medicare numbers, clinical notes mentioned on calls), financial data with APRA-regulated entities, or any government-contracted work, this is a hard compliance question that needs a legal answer before deployment.

**AUD billing:** No. You pay in USD. Budget accordingly.

**Do Not Call Register:** This is the most important practical issue for any Australian business considering outbound AI calling. The Do Not Call Register Act 2006 prohibits calling numbers listed on the DNCR for telemarketing purposes. This applies whether a human or an AI makes the call — the Act does not distinguish. The ACMA enforces it and has issued fines of up to A$250,000 per contravention for companies (verify current penalty amounts with ACMA). Retell AI provides no DNCR guidance, no built-in DNCR screening, and no Australian-specific compliance documentation.

**Call recording consent:** Before your AI agent records a call, Australian state law may require all-party consent. NSW's Surveillance Devices Act 2007 and Victoria's Surveillance Devices Act 1999 both require that participants be informed of recording. The standard practice — and it is the safe practice — is an opening disclosure: "You are speaking with an AI assistant. This call may be recorded for quality and service purposes." Build this into your agent script before deployment.

**Australian Fit score: 2/5.** Australian PSTN numbers are supported. Compliance guidance for the Australian context is absent.

## Alternatives

If the developer requirement is the problem, **Synthflow** (reviewed separately in this series) offers a no-code approach to voice agent building, though it has shifted to enterprise pricing. For general AI agent building with voice capability in a lower-friction environment, [**Relevance AI**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-relevance-ai-australia-2026/) is worth evaluating — it is an Australian-founded company. For a comparison of the voice-agent platforms specifically, see our review of Vapi, Bland AI, and Synthflow in this series.

## Bottom line

Retell AI is a well-priced, well-built developer platform for AI voice agents. The transparent modular pricing model and no-platform-fee structure make it easier to start without overcommitting, and the simulation testing and post-call QA features show genuine product maturity.

The honest verdict for Australian businesses: this is a developer tool, compliance is your responsibility, and the Australian legal picture for AI outbound calling requires more attention than most businesses are giving it. Retell does not make this easier or harder than its US competitors — it simply does not address it at all.

If you have a development team and a compliance officer, Retell AI is a strong candidate. If you have neither, it is not the right starting point.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Retell AI available in Australia?

Yes. Retell AI supports Australian phone numbers via Twilio and there are no geographic restrictions on sign-up. However, all data is processed on US servers. Australian businesses must independently manage compliance with the Do Not Call Register Act 2006, state-level call recording consent laws, and ACMA telemarketing guidelines.

### How much does Retell AI cost per minute for Australian users?

Retell AI charges per component. With a capable LLM (GPT-5.1), standard TTS, and Australian Twilio telephony, a realistic all-in cost is approximately US$0.13/min (\~A$0.18/min at a 1.40 exchange rate, before GST). The platform's own cost calculator at retellai.com/pricing lets you model your specific configuration.

### Can Retell AI help my business comply with the Australian Do Not Call Register?

No. Retell AI provides no built-in Do Not Call Register screening and no Australian-specific compliance guidance. If you are using Retell AI for outbound calls to Australian consumers, you are responsible for screening your call list against the DNCR before each campaign, under the Do Not Call Register Act 2006\. Non-compliance can result in fines issued by the ACMA.
