**The gate:** Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

> **The verdict:** Pomelli Animate is the best free marketing-video deal an Australian small business can get right now. It turns a static post into a short, on-brand clip in one click — no videographer, no subscription, no AUD conversion to argue about. The catch is that it's a Google Labs experiment: short clips, no editing, no support, and it could vanish. Use it now, but don't build your pipeline on it. **20/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good.**

## What it is

Pomelli is an experimental marketing tool from Google Labs. It reads your website, builds a "Business DNA" profile of your brand — colours, fonts, tone of voice — then generates campaign assets that match. In January 2026, Google added **Animate**, the feature this review is about.

Animate takes a static asset Pomelli has already made — a social tile, a product image — and turns it into a short animated version. The motion is generated by **Veo 3.1**, Google DeepMind's video model. You click once. A few moments later you have a 5–15 second clip that still wears your brand colours and type, sized for vertical feeds.

That's the whole pitch: static post in, on-brand short video out, no skills required. For a time-poor operator running their own Instagram, that's a real shortcut. A five-second branded clip used to mean a freelancer and an invoice. Now it means a click.

I've run it across a month of real assets — café menus, a tradie's before-and-after tile, a few retail product shots — to see whether the shortcut holds up beyond the demo.

## What it costs in Australia

**Free.** Pomelli, Animate included, costs nothing. It's a Google Labs experiment, not a product with a price list.

That makes the usual AI Directory pricing section short. There's no USD figure to convert to AUD. There's no GST to add or argue about. There's no free tier that quietly throttles you toward a paid plan, because there is no paid plan.

But "free" here carries the standard Labs price, and it's worth saying plainly. Your inputs help Google improve its products. The tool can change, get capped, or disappear without notice. You don't get a contract, an SLA, or a refund — because you never paid. For a small business deciding whether to lean on this, that trade matters more than any dollar figure would.

So: free to use, free to walk away from, and free to be switched off. Price it accordingly in your planning.

## How it works

The flow is two stages, and the first one does most of the work.

**Stage one — Business DNA.** You point Pomelli at your website. It reads the site and builds a profile of your brand: your palette, your typefaces, the way you talk about what you sell. This is the bit that stops the output looking like generic AI filler. Because Animate builds from your DNA, a café's clip uses the café's colours and a tradie's clip uses the tradie's, rather than some stock template.

**Stage two — Animate.** Pomelli generates static campaign assets from that DNA. Pick one, click Animate, and Veo 3.1 produces a 5–15 second motion version. It holds the brand colours and type, and it comes out sized for vertical feeds — Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts.

The important limit is built into that flow. Animate works on assets created inside Pomelli. It is not a general-purpose video editor. You can't drop in last year's product video and ask it to re-cut. You can't import a clip from your phone and brand it. The pipeline starts and ends inside Pomelli, and that's the box you're working in.

## What it does well

**It removes a real cost.** This is the headline, and it's earned. Short branded video has been the gap between businesses that can afford a creator and those that can't. Animate closes that gap to zero dollars. For a sole trader posting to Instagram between jobs, that's not a nice-to-have — it's the difference between posting motion content and posting none.

**The Business DNA approach actually works.** The clips don't look like AI slop. Because the system starts from your real palette and type, the output reads as *yours*. In my tests the café's clip looked like the café. That's harder than it sounds, and most free tools fail it.

**It's genuinely one click.** There's no learning curve, no timeline, no keyframes. You pick an asset and press the button. For the 35-year-old running a business and a marketing department of one, that is the entire point. Ease of use is where this tool is strongest.

**Australia got it on day one.** The launch regions were the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Australians are usually an afterthought for a Google Labs experiment. Here we weren't, and the tool is live and usable from Tasmania to Perth without a VPN.

## Where it falls short

If I can't find anything wrong with a tool, I haven't looked hard enough. With Animate I didn't have to look hard.

**The clips are short and you can't edit them.** Five to fifteen seconds is fine for a single feed post and useless for anything longer. There's no trimming, no captions layer, no control over pacing. What Veo gives you is what you ship. If the motion isn't quite right, your only move is to regenerate and hope.

**It's a closed pipeline.** Animate only works on assets made inside Pomelli. Your existing photo library, your phone footage, last quarter's product video — none of it can go in. That walls the feature off from a lot of real-world marketing material a small business already owns.

**No SLA, no support, no promises.** This is a Labs experiment. There is no AU support channel, no uptime guarantee, and a known Google habit of quietly retiring experiments. A tool you can't phone and can't depend on is a tool you use opportunistically, not one you build a content calendar around.

**Your data goes to Google, offshore.** Inputs help train Google's products, and processing happens on Google infrastructure outside Australia. For most social tiles that's a non-issue. For anything sensitive, it's a reason to keep certain assets out of the tool entirely.

## Australian fit

This is where a free Google experiment quietly does better than most paid tools we review.

**Availability.** Live in Australia at launch. No workaround needed. That alone puts it ahead of the long list of US tools Australians can't get for months, if at all.

**Pricing fit.** Free means no USD-to-AUD conversion, no exchange-rate creep, no GST question. The pricing is identical for a Melbourne business and a Manhattan one, which almost never happens.

**AU-aware output.** Because Animate builds from your site, the brand it animates is already your Australian brand — your spelling, your offers, your local positioning. The tool doesn't impose an American look; it reflects back what you gave it.

**Where it loses a point.** Data goes to Google offshore, and there is no Australian support channel for a Labs experiment. Those are real gaps for a local operator, even at a price of zero. So Australian Fit lands at 4/5 — strong, not perfect.

## Score

| Criterion | Score |
| --------------------- | ------------------------ |
| Value for Money | 5/5 |
| Ease of Use | 5/5 |
| Feature Depth | 3/5 |
| Australian Fit | 4/5 |
| Reliability & Support | 3/5 |
| **Total** | **20/25 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good** |

**Value for Money — 5/5.** It's free, it produces branded video, and it's available in Australia. There is no fairer price than zero, and the output is worth real money. Full marks.

**Ease of Use — 5/5.** One click from asset to clip. No timeline, no skills, no manual. This is the easiest way for a non-technical Australian to get motion content, full stop.

**Feature Depth — 3/5.** This is where it's thin. Short clips, no editing, and a closed pipeline that won't touch your existing files. It does one thing well and refuses to do anything else.

**Australian Fit — 4/5.** Live here at launch, free with no currency or GST friction, and it animates your own AU brand. Held off five by offshore data handling and no local support. (See our [methodology](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/) for how Australian Fit is weighted.)

**Reliability & Support — 3/5.** No SLA, no support channel, and the standing risk that a Labs experiment gets switched off. Fine for opportunistic use, not for anything you depend on.

## Bottom line

**If you run social for an Australian small business** — a café, a salon, a trades business, a small retailer — use Pomelli Animate now, while it's free. It's the fastest no-cost route to short, on-brand video that still looks like you. For a sole operator with no budget and no time, that's close to a no-brainer.

**If you need real video control** — longer pieces, editing, captions, working from your own footage — this isn't your tool. The closed pipeline and 15-second ceiling will frustrate you fast. Reach for a proper editor instead.

**If you're building a serious content pipeline,** treat Animate as a bonus, not a foundation. It has no SLA and a habit, common to Labs experiments, of disappearing. Enjoy it while it's here. Just don't bet the calendar on it.

The honest summary: a genuinely useful free tool with a real ceiling and a real expiry risk. Worth four stars, worth your time this month, and worth keeping a backup plan for.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Pomelli Animate available in Australia?

Yes — and from day one. The launch regions were the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, so it's live and usable from Tasmania to Perth without a VPN. That's rare for a Google Labs experiment.

### What does Pomelli Animate cost?

Nothing. It's free — a Google Labs experiment with no price list, no USD-to-AUD conversion, and no GST to add. But "free" carries the standard Labs trade: your inputs help train Google's products, there's no SLA, and it could be switched off without notice.

### What are its main limitations?

Clips are short (5 to 15 seconds) and can't be edited — no trimming, captions, or pacing control. It's also a closed pipeline: Animate only works on assets created inside Pomelli, so your existing photos and phone footage can't go in.

### Is it safe for my business data?

For most social tiles, yes. But your inputs go to Google offshore and help train its products, with no Australian data residency or support channel. Keep anything sensitive out of the tool, and don't build your content calendar around an experiment that could disappear.
