- Description: Pixlr is a Singapore-based AI photo editor with 500 million users and a genuinely useful free tier. Its Premium plan is among the cheapest paths to AI image and video generation in the browser. The catch: data privacy terms deserve a close read, and the free tier shows ads.

*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Pixlr is a legitimate Photoshop alternative that has quietly expanded into AI image generation, video creation, audio tools, and face swap. Its free tier is genuinely useful, and its Premium plan at USD $9.99/month (approx. AUD $13.99 + GST) is one of the better-value AI creative bundles available. It's not trying to replace Midjourney or Adobe Firefly — it's trying to replace your entire creative software stack at a fraction of the cost. For non-designers and small business owners who want one browser-based tool that does a lot, it delivers. Read the privacy policy before uploading photos of clients.

## What Pixlr is

Pixlr is an online photo editor that has been running since 2008 — one of the few AI tools in this space that's older than the smartphone. It was originally built by Swedish developer Ola Sevandersson and is now operated by Pixlr Pte Ltd, headquartered in Singapore.

The product has evolved significantly from its early days as a browser-based Photoshop alternative. Today, Pixlr is better understood as an AI-powered creative suite that covers:

- **Photo editing** (Pixlr Express and Pixlr Editor) — layers, masks, filters, AI background removal, generative fill, object removal, and upscaling
- **AI image generation** — text-to-image using Flux, Flux Pro, Recraft V4, Stable Diffusion, and other models
- **AI video generation** — text-to-video and image-to-video using Kling AI, Google Veo, PixVerse, and others
- **AI audio** — text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and text-to-music via ElevenLabs and similar models
- **Face swap** — AI face replacement in photos and video
- **Collage and template tools** — for social media and marketing content

The company claims 500 million users worldwide and 50 billion photos edited. Those numbers are plausible given the product is genuinely free to use and has been around for nearly two decades.

## What it costs in Australia

All **web** prices are in USD, with GST applying as an imported digital service; exchange rate approximately USD $1 = AUD $1.40 (May 2026). **The iPhone and iPad app prices in Australian dollars with GST included** — see below the table. *(Corrected 21 Sep 2026 — this section previously gave only the USD ladder.)*

**In the app, Australian dollars — and the headline tier is a wash.** The [Australian App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/au/app/id526783584?ref=theaidirectory.com.au) declares `"priceCurrency":"AUD"` with Pixlr Pte Ltd as seller of record, and sells **Pixlr Premium at A$14.99/month (promo) or A$149.99/year, and A$9.99/week**, a **Premium Subscription at A$4.99/month or A$24.99/year**, **Pixlr Plus at A$4.99/month (promo)** and a one-off **Ads Removal at A$4.99** — all GST included, on an Apple tax invoice. A$149.99 a year is about A$136.35 ex-GST against the \~A$134 the annual Premium conversion above produces: within two dollars. The A$4.99 and A$24.99 rows undercut the web Plus tier. Several of these carry "Promo" in their names, so **check what the app quotes you rather than assuming the promotional rate**. Read 21 September 2026.

**Free tier** includes basic photo editing tools with ads. AI generation is credit-limited.

**Plus** (AUD \~$3.40/month annual): ad-free, 80 AI credits per month (\~80 fast images or \~4 fast videos), 1 concurrent generation.

**Premium** (AUD \~$13.60/month annual): full model access including video and audio, 1,000 AI credits/month, 4 concurrent generations, private mode, full template library. This is the meaningful upgrade for regular users.

**Ultra** (AUD \~$34.10/month annual): unlimited fast image generations (subject to fair use), up to 10,000 monthly credits, 8 concurrent generations.

**Credit packs** available as add-ons for users on any plan who need extra generations.

## How it works in practice

Pixlr runs entirely in the browser — no download or installation required. You open it, drag in a photo or start from a blank canvas, and the full editing interface is available within seconds.

The AI tools sit alongside traditional editing: you can remove a background with one click, then use generative fill to replace it, then upscale the result for print — all in the same session. Image generation lives in a separate tab where you pick a model (Flux is the default; Recraft V4 and others are available on Premium), type a prompt, and get results in seconds.

Video generation uses Kling AI or Google Veo depending on your plan. Results are short clips (typically 5–10 seconds) that are suitable for social media but not broadcast production.

The AI instruct editor deserves a mention: you describe a change in plain language ("make the sky look overcast", "remove the person on the left") and the AI applies it without requiring you to use selection tools manually. It's not perfect, but it works well enough that a non-designer can get usable results.

Mobile apps exist for iOS and Android, though the full feature set is more accessible on desktop.

---

## What it does well

**Breadth of tools in one place.** A small business owner who needs to create a social media post, remove a product background, generate a marketing image, and add a voiceover can do all of that in a single Pixlr session at a fraction of the cost of subscribing separately to Photoshop, Midjourney, and ElevenLabs.

**Genuine free tier.** Many tools advertise "free" and then hit you with a watermark wall or a two-image limit. Pixlr's free tier has ads and credit limits, but the underlying editing tools work, and background removal and basic AI tools are usable without paying.

**Strong model variety.** Being able to choose between Flux, Recraft V4, and Stable Diffusion depending on your use case is a practical advantage over tools that lock you into one model.

**Singapore HQ is closer than the US.** Pixlr is not Australian, but Singapore-based infrastructure is closer to Australian users than US-based competitors, and data transfer within the Asia-Pacific region is governed by more familiar legal frameworks than US jurisdiction. The privacy policy states account data is deleted within 30 days of account closure.

**Long track record.** Pixlr has been running since 2008\. That's 18 years of operation — a meaningful reliability signal in a market full of 12-month-old tools.

---

## What it doesn't do well

**Free tier shows ads and has credit caps.** If you use Pixlr regularly without paying, you will see ads, and you will run out of AI credits. The Plus plan at AUD \~$3.40/month is the practical minimum for regular use without friction.

**Data privacy terms require attention.** Pixlr collects browsing data, usage data, and — if you use face swap or similar tools — biometric facial geometry. The privacy policy states facial geometry is not shared with third parties, but it is collected. If you use Pixlr to edit photos of clients or staff, you should read the privacy policy at pixlr.com/privacy-policy before uploading that material.

**Image generation quality sits behind specialists.** Pixlr aggregates models rather than training its own. Midjourney still produces better aesthetic images for creative work. Ideogram is better at text-in-image. If image generation is your primary use case, a specialist tool will outperform Pixlr at the high end.

**Video generation is short-clip only.** The AI video tools produce 5–10 second clips via Kling or Veo. For longer-form video editing, you need a different tool.

**No Australian entity.** Pixlr Pte Ltd is headquartered in Singapore. There is no Australian business registration, no local support number, and no AU-specific terms. Support is via email (info@pixlr.com).

---

## Australian fit

Pixlr is headquartered in Singapore, not the United States, which is a meaningful distinction: data handling for Australian users is subject to Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act rather than US regulations. The company has a Data Protection Officer contactable at dpo@pixlr.com.

Web pricing is in USD, with the Premium plan at approximately AUD $11.19/month (annual, ex-GST) — accessible for most small business users. There is no AU-specific pricing page and no local entity. **There is an AUD payment option**: the Australian App Store sells Premium at A$14.99/month or A$149.99/year with GST included, effectively the same money. *(Corrected 21 Sep 2026 — this line previously said there was no AUD payment option.)*

The product works equally well for Australian users as anywhere else. There are no geo-restrictions and the service has no specific Australia-unfriendly design decisions.

One flag for Australian users in professional contexts: if you process facial images or photos of identifiable individuals, check your obligations under the Australian Privacy Act 1988 before using Pixlr's face swap or similar tools. Pixlr's privacy policy is not Australia-specific and does not reference the Privacy Act.

Australian Fit score: **3/5** — Singapore HQ, better data framework than US-only competitors; USD web pricing, though the App Store sells the same plans in AUD with GST included at effectively the same price; no Australian entity or local support; solid AU accessibility. *(Rationale corrected 21 Sep 2026; mark unchanged — see Update history.)*

## Alternatives

- [**Canva Magic Studio**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/canva-magic-studio-review-australia-2026/) — Canva is the dominant design tool for Australian SMBs. It has an Australian entity, AUD pricing, and a deeper template library. Pixlr's editing tools are stronger; Canva's design and publishing workflow is better.
- [**Adobe Firefly / Adobe Express**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-adobe-express-australia-2026/) — Adobe has an Australian business presence and sells in AUD. Better for users who need commercially safe training data and legal assurances. More expensive than Pixlr at most tiers.
- [**Picsart**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-picsart-australia-2026/) — Comparable browser-based creative tool with similar AI feature set. Pixlr has a longer track record and better model variety.

---

## Bottom line

Pixlr is a seriously capable tool that most people overlook because it doesn't have a splashy brand. For Australian users who want one browser-based creative platform that handles photo editing, AI image generation, video clips, and audio — the Premium plan at roughly AUD $11.19/month (annual) is genuinely good value.

It's not the best at any single thing. Midjourney beats it on image aesthetics. Adobe beats it on commercial safety and local support. Canva beats it on templates and brand-kit workflows.

But Pixlr does more than most for less than most. If your needs are practical rather than specialist, and you want to avoid managing five separate subscriptions, it deserves a proper evaluation.

Read the privacy policy if you upload photos of identifiable people. Understand it's USD pricing with GST on top. Know that support is Singapore-based. With those facts in hand, it's a fair deal.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Pixlr free to use in Australia?

Yes, Pixlr has a free tier available at pixlr.com with no geographic restrictions for Australian users. The free tier includes basic photo editing and limited AI credits but displays ads. The Plus plan (USD $1.99/month annual billing, approximately AUD $3.40/month including GST) removes ads and adds 80 monthly AI credits. The Premium plan (USD $7.99/month annual billing, approximately AUD $11.19/month ex-GST) unlocks all AI models including video and audio generation.

### Is Pixlr safe to use for business photos in Australia?

Pixlr is Singapore-based and governed by Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act, not US law. For most general editing work it is safe to use. However, if you upload photos containing identifiable faces and use AI face tools, Pixlr collects facial geometry data. The privacy policy states this is not shared with third parties. Australian businesses processing photos of staff or clients should check their obligations under the Australian Privacy Act 1988 before using Pixlr's face swap or similar features.

### How does Pixlr compare to Canva for Australian small businesses?

Both are strong choices, but for different tasks. Canva has an Australian entity, sells in AUD, and has a deeper template library for brand-consistent publishing. Pixlr has stronger photo editing tools and a wider range of AI models for image and video generation. Pixlr's Premium plan is cheaper than Canva Pro. If you primarily create branded content from templates, Canva is likely the better fit. If you frequently edit photos or need AI image generation alongside editing, Pixlr is worth considering.
