*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Phrase is a mature, full-featured translation management system that covers the complete localisation lifecycle — string management, TMS, machine translation orchestration, AI quality tools, and workflow automation — at pricing that is actually published. For Australian organisations serious about multilingual content, it sits in the right zone between consumer-grade AI translators and enterprise-only platforms. But it is complex to set up, USD-priced, and offers no Australian data residency.

## What Phrase Is

Phrase is a localisation platform that emerged from the merger of two European companies: Memsource, a Prague-founded translation management system launched in 2010, and PhraseApp, a Hamburg-founded developer-focused string management platform founded in 2012\. Memsource acquired PhraseApp in 2021, and the combined entity rebranded as Phrase in 2022.

The result is a platform that covers both halves of the localisation problem — managing source strings (the text developers write) and managing the translation workflow (getting those strings reviewed, translated, and returned). The two products are now called Phrase Strings (for developer-led string management) and Phrase TMS (the translation management system, formerly Memsource).

Phrase also includes Phrase Studio (video localisation), Phrase Orchestrator (workflow automation), and Phrase Language AI (machine translation and quality tools). It is a genuinely comprehensive platform used by organisations including Microsoft, Uber, Shopify, and BMW.

In the AI localisation space, Phrase competes directly with Smartling, Lokalise, and to some extent memoQ for enterprise workflows, and with Crowdin and Locize for developer teams.

## What It Costs in Australia

Phrase is one of the few serious TMS platforms to publish its pricing. All prices are in USD and billed annually (quarterly billing is available at a premium).

**Phrase Localization Platform plans (annual billing, USD):**

| Plan | Price/month (USD) | Approx. AUD/month (×1.40) |
| ------------------------------------- | ----------------- | ------------------------- |
| Freelancer | $27 | \~A$38 |
| Professional (Freelancer & LSP) | $525 | \~A$735 |
| Software UI/UX (Developer & Designer) | $525 | \~A$735 |
| Team | $1,245 | \~A$1,743 |
| Business | Custom | Contact sales |
| Enterprise | Custom | Contact sales |

*Source: Phrase pricing page (phrase.com/pricing), re-read in a browser 30 September 2026 (its currency selector offers USD, EUR, GBP and CZK, not AUD); first read with the Help Centre article 26 June 2026\. AUD conversion at \~1.40\. GST is not included in Phrase's published pricing — shown ex-GST (a GST-registered business quoting its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers add \~10%). Exchange rate as of September 2026.*

Plans are usage-based, measured in "pricing metrics" — primarily TMS Processed Words (how many words flow through the translation system per billing cycle), Strings Managed Words (how many source words are stored in Phrase Strings), and Machine Translation Units (MTUs). Plans include a base allocation; exceeding it restricts functionality until you add capacity or upgrade.

The Freelancer plan at USD $27/month (approx. A$38 + GST) is the entry point for individuals or very small teams. It is functional but limited. The next published step is USD $525/month (Professional, or Software UI/UX for product teams), then Team at USD $1,245/month; the June Starter plan at USD $135 is no longer offered.

Enterprise plans are fully customised — contact Phrase sales. Unlike Smartling, the published mid-market tiers give you a realistic anchor for budget planning before you speak to anyone.

**GST note:** Phrase is a Czech/European company. Imported digital services from non-resident suppliers attract Australian GST at 10%. Add 10% to any quoted figure (roughly A$38 becomes A$46 on the Freelancer plan). Confirm with your accountant and review your invoices.

## How It Works in Practice

Phrase operates as two connected products. Phrase Strings handles the developer side: you store your source strings (the text in your app or website), connect your code repository via GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket, and pull strings in and out of the system as your codebase changes. This continuous localisation loop is where Phrase was originally built to excel.

Phrase TMS handles the professional translation side: project managers set up translation jobs, assign to translators (in-house, freelancers, or via Phrase Language AI), track progress, manage glossaries and translation memory, and run quality checks. The CAT editor gives translators context alongside source text.

Phrase Language AI layers machine translation across the workflow. You can configure which MT engine to use (DeepL, Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, or others via API), or use Phrase's own LLM-based AI Translation Agent. The Auto LQA feature evaluates translation quality automatically using AI — flagging segments that need human attention.

Phrase Orchestrator lets you build automated workflows triggered by events (e.g., "when a new key is added to GitHub, automatically run it through MT, then queue for human review"). This is powerful for teams that push content continuously.

The practical limitation is setup complexity. Getting all of this working in your environment requires integration work, configuration time, and some technical capacity. The platform rewards organisations that invest in setup; it penalises those who want to translate a PDF by Tuesday.

## What It Does Well

**Published pricing up to the mid-market.** Team at USD $1,245/month (approx. A$1,743 + GST) is published, and the Software UI/UX and Professional plans sit at USD $525/month (approx. A$735 + GST). Business is now quote-only, and the USD $135 Starter plan has gone, so the gap between Freelancer and the next tier is wider than it was. Unlike most enterprise TMS tools, you know roughly what you are getting into before you talk to sales.

**Full-lifecycle localisation in one platform.** String management, TMS, MT orchestration, quality assurance, video localisation, and workflow automation are all present. For a team that needs to manage localisation end-to-end, Phrase offers more coverage than almost any competitor at the mid-market price point.

**Strong developer tooling.** GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket integrations, CLI tools, and a comprehensive REST API make Phrase a serious option for software companies building products for multiple markets. The continuous localisation model — where new strings automatically flow into translation — suits Agile development teams.

**Good quality assurance.** The Auto LQA tool, translation memory, and glossary controls combine to catch errors that raw AI translation misses. This matters for organisations publishing content in regulated industries or to external customers.

**Free trial available.** A 14-day trial gives you access to the platform before committing. This is more than most enterprise TMS tools offer.

---

## What It Doesn't Do Well

**Setup is not simple.** Getting meaningful value from Phrase requires significant configuration: integrations, workflow design, glossary creation, and ongoing administration. It is not a platform you log into and start using productively the same day. Small teams without a dedicated localisation manager will find the learning curve steep.

**USD pricing with no AUD equivalent.** All plans are USD. Australian businesses budget in AUD, and currency fluctuation adds unpredictability to the cost. There is no AUD pricing page, no AUD billing, and no indication this will change.

**Data residency is EU-focused, not AU-focused.** Phrase's data infrastructure is primarily in the EU (GDPR-compliant) with US options. There is no publicly confirmed Australian data centre. For Australian organisations with Privacy Act obligations — particularly in healthcare, financial services, or government — this requires legal review before sign-up.

**The pricing metrics system is confusing.** Phrase charges based on Processed Words, Strings Managed Words, MTUs, AI Units, video localisation hours, and Orchestrator Actions — multiple overlapping usage caps that can restrict functionality mid-billing-cycle if you misjudge volume. Budgeting accurately requires careful modelling upfront.

**Machine translation still needs human review for critical content.** Phrase's AI translation tools are good, but no machine translation is reliable enough for legal documents, compliance materials, or high-stakes customer communications without a human reviewer. Budget for that review layer.

**No Australian English (en-AU) focus.** Phrase supports en-AU as a language code but has no specific tools, glossaries, or quality checks tuned for Australian English. You build your own style guides or leave that work to the translators.

---

## Australian Fit

Phrase is a European platform with global coverage but no specific Australian product focus.

- **AUD pricing:** No. All in USD. Figures are ex-GST: a GST-registered business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers add \~10%. as an imported digital service.
- **Data residency:** EU and US data centres. No Australian region publicly available. Review Privacy Act obligations before committing.
- **Australian English:** Supported as a language code (en-AU). No native tooling for Australian spelling or idiom.
- **Support:** Phrase offers email and in-platform support. No Australian office; support aligned to European and US business hours.
- **GST:** Not included in published pricing. You are responsible for remitting GST on imported digital services if applicable to your business.

For Australian organisations with multilingual content needs, Phrase is a functional and capable choice — but it requires accepting USD pricing, offshore data storage, and the absence of localised support. Larger organisations with a legal team can work through the data residency question. Smaller businesses should ask before signing.

**Australian Fit score: 2/5.** Competent globally, but no AU data centre, USD pricing, and no AU-specific features or support.

## Alternatives

- [**DeepL**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-deepl-australia-2026/) — If you need high-quality AI translation without a full TMS workflow, DeepL is faster to set up and far simpler. Not suitable for managing large-scale continuous localisation programmes, but excellent for ad-hoc translation tasks. Reviewed on The AI Directory.
- **Smartling** — For enterprise organisations that need the deepest integration breadth and are prepared to invest in a sales-led procurement process. More powerful than Phrase at the top end, but significantly more expensive. See our Smartling review.
- **Crowdin** — Developer-friendly localisation platform with a genuine free tier and transparent pricing from USD $59/month. Better entry point for software teams or small businesses just starting out. See our Crowdin review.

---

## Bottom Line

Phrase is the best answer to the question "what do I use when I've outgrown DeepL but can't justify Smartling?" The published pricing, full-lifecycle localisation tools, and developer-grade integrations make it a serious platform for mid-market and enterprise teams managing multilingual content at scale.

The downsides are real: complex setup, USD pricing with no AUD option, EU-centric data residency, and a confusing usage-metric system that makes accurate budgeting difficult. None of these are dealbreakers for organisations with the internal capacity to manage them — but they are friction that Australian teams should understand before committing.

**Recommended for:** Australian teams at mid-market to enterprise companies with dedicated localisation capacity, ongoing multilingual content programmes, and the technical resources to configure integrations properly.

**Not recommended for:** One-off translation projects, Australian SMBs without a localisation manager, or any organisation with strict data residency requirements that cannot be met by EU or US storage.

Update history
- **30 Sep 2026 — re-verified by browser; negative confirmed, but the middle of the ladder has moved.** `phrase.com/pricing` on an Australian connection offers USD, EUR, GBP and CZK — no AUD. Freelancer $27 and Team $1,245 a month (billed annually) hold. **Starter (US$135) is no longer offered; Professional is US$525 (was US$875); a Software UI/UX plan for product teams is US$525; Business is now custom (was US$4,395).** Table, source note, the entry-point paragraph, the pricing strength, and both pricing FAQs (body and schema) rewritten; the Smartling comparison synced. Score unchanged: Value for Money (3/5) still rests on transparency and the complex metric system, though the entry gap is wider. `aud_native: false` already set. Capture: `Dossiers/captures/phrase-pricing-2026-09-30.txt`; [Wayback 30 Sep 2026](https://web.archive.org/web/20260929204704/https://phrase.com/pricing/).
- **22 Sep 2026 — the rebrand FAQ has been retired.** `phrase.com/launch-faq/` returns HTTP 404 and phrase.com publishes no successor. It was background for the Memsource / PhraseApp merger history, which the MultiLingual article cited beside it also covers — that one returns HTTP 403 to scripted requests, which is a bot block on this network rather than rot, and it is left as cited. The dead line is struck through beside its May capture, labelled with the real date; the capture predates our own check, so it is context and nothing more. No score moved.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does Phrase cost in Australia?

Phrase publishes pricing in USD. Plans start at USD $27/month for Freelancer (approximately A$38 + GST), rising to USD $525/month for Professional or Software UI/UX (approximately A$735 + GST) and USD $1,245/month for Team (approximately A$1,743 + GST). GST at 10% applies as an imported digital service. Enterprise plans require custom quotes. All prices are for annual billing.

### Does Phrase store data in Australia?

Phrase's data infrastructure is primarily EU and US-based. There is no publicly confirmed Australian data centre. Australian organisations with Privacy Act obligations or sector-specific data requirements should review their legal position and clarify storage location with Phrase before signing.

### Is Phrase suitable for small Australian businesses?

Phrase can work for small businesses with ongoing localisation needs — the Freelancer plan at USD $27/month is accessible, though the next tier is USD $525 — but the setup complexity and usage-metric billing model mean it rewards organisations with dedicated localisation capacity. Teams without a localisation manager may find Crowdin or DeepL easier to start with.
