*Pricing: USD prices are converted at A$1 = US$0.6970 (RBA, 7 Oct 2026) and shown ex-GST. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Mem is a notes app that throws out folders and lets AI surface the right note when you need it. It now pitches itself as an "AI chief of staff" that tracks your tasks and projects too. The "Heads Up" feature, which links related notes as you type, is still genuinely useful. But Pro has gone from US$12 a month with unlimited notes to US$29 with 100 notes and 100 messages a month. It bills only in US dollars and gives no Australian data-residency option. Many Australians already get overlapping features inside Notion or ChatGPT. Try the free tier if you drown in notes. Don't pay for it unless "Heads Up" solves a daily problem.

We keep every edition so you can see how the tool and our verdict have moved — [how and why](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-timeline/).

## What Mem is

Mem started as an AI-powered notes app. It now bills itself as "Your AI chief of staff" (homepage, 8 October 2026). Its Mem Agent "builds a living picture of your tasks, projects, and goals" and then steps in to keep you moving. Under that new pitch sits the same core idea: stop filing notes into folders. Dump everything in — meeting notes, voice memos, web clippings, random ideas — and let the AI organise and retrieve it.

You capture notes by typing, talking (Voice Mode), or clipping from the web. Mem connects related notes automatically and lets you chat with your knowledge base to pull answers back out. The newer layer tracks open tasks and projects drawn from those notes, and Pro adds custom routines and connections to Gmail, Slack and Todoist. In practice it is still a notes app first. The task-tracking agent is built on top of it, and the plan caps count notes and messages, not tasks alone.

The standout feature is "Heads Up" — as you write, Mem surfaces older notes it thinks are relevant, so a past meeting note or idea resurfaces at the moment it matters. That's the part that separates Mem from a plain notes app with a chatbot bolted on.

## What it costs in Australia

There is no AUD billing. Mem prices in US dollars only, so the figure on your card depends on the exchange rate and your bank's foreign-transaction fee. Conversions below use A$1 = US$0.6970 (RBA, 7 Oct 2026) and show figures ex-GST (GST-registered businesses quoting an ABN are not charged GST; other buyers add \~10%).

*Source: get.mem.ai/pricing, read from Australia 30 September 2026 and re-read 8 October 2026\. All limits reset monthly. No annual-billing option or annual discount is listed, so the figures are monthly. The first edition of this review (June 2026) scored Pro at US$12 a month with unlimited notes and chat, alongside a Teams plan that is no longer listed.*

**What changed matters more than the headline price.** In June, US$12 bought unlimited notes. Today US$29 buys 100 new notes and 100 messages a month. A heavy note-taker who dumps ten notes a day will need Pro 5× at about A$142 a month. That is the opposite of a "dump everything in" app.

A note on GST: A GST-registered business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow about 10%. The pricing page does not state how GST is handled, and the column above is a plain conversion with no loading applied. Check your own invoice for the actual treatment.

## How it works in practice

Setup takes about five minutes. You create an account, install the Chrome clipper if you want it, and start dumping notes. There's no folder structure to design first — that's the whole point.

The free tier is genuinely tight. Twenty-five notes a month and 25 chat messages a month is enough to test the feel, not enough to live in. A heavy note-taker will hit that wall inside a week, which is clearly the intent — the free plan is a trial, not a home.

On Pro, the AI features open up. You can chat with your notes ("what did we decide about the Q3 budget?"), let the agent track open tasks, and set up one custom routine. Every chat counts against a 100-message monthly cap, so the chat is something you ration, not lean on. The "Heads Up" suggestions are the daily payoff: write up a client call and Mem quietly surfaces the last three notes about that client. When it works, it feels like the app read your mind. When it misfires, it surfaces noise — and there's no way to tell in advance which you'll get on a given day.

## What it does well

- **"Heads Up" is a real feature, not a gimmick.** Surfacing related notes as you write is the one thing Mem does that a Notion-plus-chatbot setup doesn't replicate cleanly. If resurfacing old context is your pain point, this is the reason to look.
- **Zero-filing capture.** You can throw a thought in by voice, web clip or text and never think about where it "goes." For people who abandon note apps because filing is friction, that lowers the barrier.
- **Tasks come out of your notes.** The newer agent layer tracks open tasks and projects it finds in what you capture, and Pro connects to Gmail, Slack or Todoist. It saves keeping a separate to-do list in step with your notes.
- **Clean, fast capture surface.** The interface is quick and uncluttered — it reads like a notes app, not a project-management suite, which suits someone who just wants to write and move on.

## What it doesn't do well

- **No AUD billing and no stated Australian data residency.** You pay in US dollars, wear the FX spread plus any foreign-transaction fee, and there's no published option to host your data in Australia. For anyone handling client or commercially sensitive notes, that's a real gap. Mem's Trust Center (trust.mem.ai) did not expose hosting region, SOC 2, or GDPR detail in a readable form when we checked in June 2026, so treat the compliance posture as unconfirmed and check it directly before trusting Mem with sensitive material.
- **Paid plans are capped too.** Pro's US$29 buys 100 new notes and 100 messages a month. Heavy users are pushed up a ladder that reaches US$199 a month, plus US$50 top-ups on the top tier.
- **The free tier is barely usable.** 25 notes a month is a demo, not a free plan. You can't properly evaluate whether the AI earns its keep before you're asked to pay.
- **You may already own this.** A Notion AI or ChatGPT Plus subscriber gets overlapping capability — note storage plus an AI you can query — often inside a tool they're already paying for. Mem has to be meaningfully better at resurfacing notes to justify a second subscription, and for many users it won't be.
- **"It organises itself" cuts both ways.** When you give up folders, you also give up control. If the AI's connections are wrong or its retrieval misses, you have fewer manual levers to fix it than a structured app gives you.
- **Thin AU support footprint.** No Australian phone support, no local hours, and a US-time-zone team. Fine for a notes app; worth knowing before you trust it with anything important.

## Australian fit

This is where Mem struggles for our readers. It's a capable global product with no Australian adaptation at all. Billing is USD-only, so the Pro plan's US$29 becomes roughly A$41 ex-GST (Plus: US$9, about A$13), and your actual cost moves with the dollar. There's no published Australian data-residency option, which matters if you're a Melbourne business owner putting client notes into it. The product makes no concession to AU context — no local pricing, no local support hours, no stated hosting region.

None of that makes Mem unusable in Australia. It makes it a tool you use *despite* being Australian, not one built with you in mind. For a personal idea-capture habit, that's tolerable. For business-sensitive material, the unconfirmed data residency is enough reason to pause until you've read the Trust Center yourself.

## Alternatives

- [**Notion AI**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/notion-ai/) — if you want notes, databases, and an AI you can query in one place, and you're happy to do some manual structure. Many Australians already pay for it, which makes a second Mem subscription hard to justify.
- [**ChatGPT**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/chatgpt-review-australia/) — not a notes app, but if "chat with my information" is the job you're hiring for, ChatGPT Plus with its memory and file uploads covers a lot of the same ground for similar money.
- [**Claude**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/claude-ai-review-australia/) — strong for long-form thinking and working over your own documents; pair it with any plain notes app and you get much of Mem's retrieval value without the lock-in to one app's organisational model.

## Bottom line

Mem is a clever, well-built notes app with one genuinely distinctive feature — "Heads Up" — and a clear point of view: stop filing, let AI find it. If you take far more notes than you ever revisit, and resurfacing old context is your daily frustration, the free tier is worth an afternoon.

But it's a hard recommend for most Australians, and harder than it was in June. Pro costs more than twice as much and now caps the notes you can add. You'll likely already own an overlapping tool, you'll pay in US dollars, and you can't confirm where your data lives. For a 35-year-old Melbourne business owner weighing a second subscription, the honest answer is: try the free tier, but don't expect Mem to replace what you've already got unless "Heads Up" specifically solves a problem you feel every day.

| Value for Money | 1/5 | Pro is US$29/mo (\~A$41) for 100 notes and 100 messages, where US$12 once bought unlimited; heavy users need US$99+ tiers; overlaps tools many already pay for; thin free tier. Plus at US$9 is the cheaper way in, but 50 notes a month is a trial, not a habit. |
| Ease of Use | 4/5 | Fast, uncluttered, no folder setup — genuinely low-friction capture. |
| Feature Depth | 3/5 | "Heads Up" and note-chat are strong; the new task-tracking agent, routines and connections add breadth, but the caps limit how far you can use them. |

Update history
- **8 Oct 2026** — New edition. **Was:** 14/25, Value for Money 2/5\. The 30 Sep re-read moved the note to the US$29 Pro plan but held the score for a re-score. **Now:** 13/25, Value for Money 1/5\. Pro is US$29 a month for 100 messages, 100 notes and 50 open tasks; Plus is US$9 for 50 of each; Pro 2×–20× run US$49–US$199; all limits reset monthly and no annual option is listed. The homepage now leads with "Your AI chief of staff" and a Mem Agent that tracks tasks, projects and goals, so the description is rewritten. Model choice is no longer advertised, so that claim is cut. Conversions recut at the RBA rate of 7 Oct 2026\. Source: get.mem.ai/pricing and get.mem.ai (read from Australia 30 Sep 2026; re-read 8 Oct 2026). The previous edition is kept unchanged and linked above.
- **30 Sep 2026 — re-verified by browser; negative confirmed, plans rebuilt.** `get.mem.ai/pricing` on an Australian connection now lists Free, **Plus $9, Pro $29** and Pro 2× / 5× / 10× / 20× at $49 / $99 / $149 / $199 a month, all with capped messages, notes and Voice Mode hours; no Teams plan and no annual option. This review had Pro at $12 with unlimited notes and chat. The table, the currency paragraph, the Value for Money note and both pricing FAQs (body and schema) are corrected. The page now pitches Mem as an agent that tracks tasks and projects. Bare `$`, no `A$`. `aud_native: false` set. Score held at 14/25; \[RS15\] filed. - **20 Jun 2026** — First reviewed.
- **24 Sep 2026** — **The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was.** The header read *“gross-up; GST unconfirmed”* and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045\. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, **141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10**. **No figure changed here; only the description of them did.** Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: *gross-up* names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and *GST unconfirmed* is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is **not charged GST** on an imported digital service. **No USD price moved and no score changed.** `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Mem available in Australia?

Yes — it's a global web and app product accessible from Australia, but with no Australian adaptation: no local pricing, no local support hours and no stated hosting region. You use it despite being Australian, not because it's built for you.

### Does Mem charge in AUD?

No. Mem prices in US dollars only, so your card cost depends on the exchange rate plus any foreign-transaction fee. Plus is US$9 a month (\~A$13 ex-GST) and Pro US$29 (\~A$41), both with monthly caps on notes and messages, checked 8 October 2026\. GST handling isn't stated on the pricing page — check your own invoice.

### Is there a free plan?

Yes, but it's tight — 25 notes and 25 messages to Mem a month, plus 3 hours of Voice Mode. That's enough to test the feel, not enough to live in. A heavy note-taker will hit the wall within a week.

### Does Mem keep my data in Australia?

No published Australian data-residency option. Its Trust Center didn't expose hosting region, SOC 2 or GDPR detail readably when we checked in June 2026, so treat the compliance posture as unconfirmed and check it before trusting Mem with sensitive material.

### Who is Mem best for?

People who take far more notes than they revisit and find filing a chore — the "Heads Up" related-note surfacing is genuinely distinctive. For most others, an existing Notion AI or ChatGPT subscription already overlaps it, so a second subscription is hard to justify.
