*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Luma Dream Machine is the closest thing to a film camera you can drive with a sentence. The Ray3.14 model produces genuinely cinematic clips — real depth, believable motion, 1080p out of the box — and the Draft Mode workflow lets you fail fast before you spend credits on a polished render. But it's a US product through and through: priced in US dollars, hosted on US servers, with no AUD billing and no Australian data residency. For a Melbourne marketer or content studio it's a capable tool you rent from overseas, not a local one. Buy it for the output, not the comfort.

## What Luma Dream Machine is

Dream Machine is the consumer-facing video app from Luma AI, a US company. You type a description — or upload a still image, or a piece of footage — and it generates a short video clip. It is one of the three or four names that actually matter in AI video right now, alongside Google's Veo, OpenAI's Sora and Kuaishou's Kling.

The engine underneath is Luma's Ray model family. Ray3 launched in September 2025 as what Luma calls the first "reasoning" video model — it plans a shot before rendering it, and was the first to output high-fidelity 16-bit HDR for professional film pipelines. The current default, Ray3.14, landed on 26 January 2026: native 1080p, roughly 4× faster and 3× cheaper than Ray3 at 720p, and able to modify existing footage up to 18 seconds long (source: Luma's Ray3.14 announcement).

In plain terms: it does three jobs. Text-to-video (describe a scene, get a clip), image-to-video (animate a still), and video-to-video (re-style or edit footage you already have, via "Ray3 Modify"). It is built for creators and marketers, not developers — though an API exists.

## What it costs in Australia

Luma bills in **US dollars only on the web**. There is no AUD pricing there and no GST line — as an imported digital service, GST may be added at checkout or handled by your card issuer, so treat the AUD figures below as the real-world ballpark, not a quote. *(Corrected 21 Sep 2026 — the iPhone app does bill in AUD with GST included, but on the legacy tier ladder and dearer; see below the table.)*

Pricing is also mid-transition, which matters. Luma's main pricing page (lumalabs.ai/pricing) now shows a three-tier Plus / Pro / Ultra structure, while the support hub still documents the older Free / Lite / Plus / Unlimited tiers. Both were live when we checked on 20 June 2026\. We've shown the current marketing-page tiers as the headline, with the legacy entry tiers noted, because the cheap end of the range may still be available to you.

**The Australian App Store prices in AUD — and is selling the legacy ladder.** The [Australian listing](https://apps.apple.com/au/app/id6478852867?ref=theaidirectory.com.au) declares `"priceCurrency":"AUD"` with Luma AI, Inc. as seller of record, and offers **Lite A$14.99/month or A$149.99/year, Plus A$49.99 or A$499.99, Unlimited A$149.99 or A$1,499.99**, plus **Dream Machine credits at A$6.00**, GST included on an Apple tax invoice. Note the tiers: **Lite, Plus and Unlimited** is the older structure the support hub documents, not the current Plus / Pro / Ultra marketing ladder — so treat these as what the app will charge you, not as the price of a current plan. Where they compare, the app is dearer: Plus at A$49.99 is about A$45.45 ex-GST against the \~A$42 below. Read 21 September 2026.

AUD figures are a conversion at the project's \~1.40 rate; whether that loading is actually GST you can claim back, or simply your card issuer's margin, isn't shown on Luma's invoice, so treat the figures as a ballpark, not a quote. Luma charges in USD, so your statement amount will move with the exchange rate. Annual billing saves up to 20% per Luma's pricing page. Credits are consumed per generation, and higher resolution, HDR and longer clips burn more — so the "10,000 credits" on Plus is fewer finished videos than it sounds once you're rendering at quality.

Source for all pricing: Luma's official pricing page and support hub (see Sources), checked 20 June 2026.

## How it works in practice

You write a prompt, pick a model and resolution, and hit generate. The standout in day-to-day use is **Draft Mode**: low-cost, fast, rough renders you use to explore an idea — Luma claims up to 20× faster — before you commit credits to a polished 4K HDR version. This is the right workflow. AI video is a slot machine; Draft Mode lets you pull the lever cheaply until the composition is right, then spend.

A clip takes anywhere from under a minute (draft, 720p) to several minutes (polished, 4K HDR) depending on queue and tier. Image-to-video is the most reliable mode — give it a strong still and it animates with believable camera moves. Pure text-to-video is more of a gamble: you'll often run three or four generations before one nails the brief. Budget for that. A single "finished" 5-second hero clip realistically costs you several generations' worth of credits, not one.

Ray3 Modify is the genuinely new trick — feed it footage and a character reference image and it re-skins or re-times the shot while keeping the performance. It's powerful and fiddly, and it's where the pro pipeline (the HDR/EXR output) actually earns its keep.

## What it does well

- **The output is genuinely cinematic.** Depth of field, lighting and camera motion look directed, not generated. This is the core reason to choose it.
- **Native 1080p and a credible 4K HDR path.** Ray3.14 renders 1080p by default and upscales to 4K with HDR — output you can actually drop into an ad or a brand reel, not just a social teaser.
- **Draft Mode is the smart-money workflow.** Explore cheap, polish once. It respects your credit budget in a category that usually doesn't.
- **Commercial rights are included from the paid tiers.** On Plus and up you get no watermark and commercial use — important the moment you put a clip in front of a client.
- **Strong image-to-video.** Pair it with a still from Midjourney or your own photography and the animation is reliable and controllable.

## What it doesn't do well

- **No AUD billing on the web and no GST clarity there.** You're charged in US dollars, your bill moves with the exchange rate, and GST handling on the imported service isn't shown on the invoice. The iPhone app does bill in AUD with GST included — dearer, and on retired tier names. *(Corrected 21 Sep 2026.)* For a GST-registered Australian business that's an accounting nuisance every month.
- **No Australian data residency.** Processing happens on Luma's US servers. If you're handling client footage, brand assets or anything sensitive, it leaves the country. There is no AU hosting option.
- **Pricing is in flux and the cheap tiers are murky.** Two different plan structures were live on the same day we reviewed. The sub-$10 Lite tier still appears on the support hub but has dropped off the main marketing pricing page, so don't assume it will survive — if it goes, the real starting price jumps to \~A$42/month.
- **Text-to-video still needs several attempts.** You will burn credits getting a usable clip from text alone. The "cost per video" looks fine until you count the rejects.
- **Short clips, hard limits.** Generations are short by design (Modify caps at 18 seconds; base generations shorter). This is a shot-maker, not an edit-suite. You'll assemble the film elsewhere.

## Australian fit

This is where Dream Machine costs itself stars. There is nothing Australian about it: no AUD pricing on the web, no GST line on that invoice, no local data residency, no AU support presence — support is email and help-centre, US business hours. None of that breaks the tool, but it makes it an overseas service you rent, with the friction that implies: currency risk on every renewal, a tax treatment your bookkeeper has to handle manually, and client data crossing the Pacific. A Sydney production house can absolutely use it — many do — but with eyes open. If data residency is a contractual requirement for your clients, this is a problem you must solve before you start, not after.

## Alternatives

- [**Google Gemini**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/google-gemini-review-australia/) — if you're already in Google Workspace, the Veo video model is increasingly bundled there, with the billing and data story most Australian businesses already accept. Less specialised than Luma, more convenient.
- [**Runway**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/runway-review-australia-2026/) — the other serious creator-grade video tool, with a deeper editing suite around the generation. Similar USD/US-hosting caveats apply.
- [**Kling**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/kling-ai-review-australia-2026/) — strong output and often cheaper, but a Chinese-owned platform, which raises a sharper data-residency question than Luma's US hosting for most AU businesses.

## Bottom line

Buy Luma Dream Machine if your job is making short, cinematic video and you care about the quality of the frame above all else. On output, it's near the top of the category — Ray3.14's 1080p-native renders and Draft Mode workflow are the real deal, and the commercial rights mean you can put the results in front of paying clients. Skip it, or proceed carefully, if Australian billing, GST tidiness or data residency are non-negotiable — because on all three it offers you nothing, and there's no AU version coming. It's a very good camera with an American address. Rent it for what it shoots, and put the data and tax questions on your checklist before the first invoice lands.

| Value for Money | 3/5 | Output justifies the spend, but USD billing, credit burn on rejects and the murky cheap tier dull the value. |

| Australian Fit | 2/5 | No AU data residency, no local support — an imported service end to end. Luma is **USD-only** on the web; the Australian App Store does bill in AUD with GST included, but dearer and on Luma's retired Lite/Plus/Unlimited ladder, so it earns no credit. *(Rationale corrected 21 Sep 2026; mark unchanged — see Update history.)* |
| Reliability & Support | 3/5 | Capable and current, but support is email-only US hours and pricing changed mid-review. |

*Note on stars: a raw 16/25 lands in the four-star band on its own. Under our Australian Fit gate it could not have worn five stars regardless — Australian Fit is 2/5 — so the four-star rating stands.*

Update history
- **21 Sep 2026** — **Luma's Australian App Store listing prices in AUD — on the legacy tier ladder, and dearer. No score moves.** This review says *"Luma bills in* *US dollars only* *. There is no AUD pricing and no GST line"*. The [Australian App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/au/app/id6478852867?ref=theaidirectory.com.au) declares `"priceCurrency":"AUD"`, names **Luma AI, Inc.** as seller and sells **Lite at A$14.99/month or A$149.99/year, Plus at A$49.99 or A$499.99, Unlimited at A$149.99 or A$1,499.99**, plus Dream Machine credits at A$6.00 — GST included, on an Apple tax invoice. **Read the tier names against the paragraph above.** This review already flags that Luma's pricing is *mid-transition*: the marketing page sells **Plus / Pro / Ultra** while the support hub still documents the older **Free / Lite / Plus / Unlimited**. The App Store is selling **Lite, Plus and Unlimited** — the legacy ladder. That is the third listing in this pass (with Tana and Ideogram) preserving a tier structure the vendor has moved on from, and it means the in-app figures cannot be read as the current price of anything. **Where they can be compared, the app is dearer.** In-app Plus at A$49.99 is about A$45.45 ex-GST against the \~A$42 gross-up published above, and Unlimited at A$149.99 against the legacy \~A$133\. Lite is level at \~A$14\. **Australian Fit holds at 2/5 and Value for Money at 3/5.** Two of the four failures in the Australian Fit row (currency, GST clarity) are technically answered on a checkout that is both dearer and selling retired tiers, and no AU data residency or local support is untouched. **Was: "There is no AUD pricing and no GST line."** Found by the app-store pricing pass, `Audits/app-store-pricing-2026-09-21.md`. - **20 Jun 2026** — First reviewed.
- **24 Sep 2026** — **The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was.** The header read *“gross-up; GST unconfirmed”* and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045\. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, **141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10**. **No figure changed here; only the description of them did.** Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: *gross-up* names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and *GST unconfirmed* is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is **not charged GST** on an imported digital service. **No USD price moved and no score changed.** `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.
- **24 Sep 2026** — **A 10% uplift described in the text that is not in the figures.** The AUD figures here are plain conversions at 1.4045, and the note around them said a notional 10% had been added for GST. Removed under our GST rule: a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is **not charged GST** on an imported digital service, and this publication stopped adding a notional 10% to its own conversions on 5 September 2026\. The point worth keeping — that neither vendor documents GST on the invoice — is kept. **No figure changed; only the description of them did. No USD price moved and no score changed.** `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Luma Dream Machine available in Australia?

Yes. It's a web and iOS app you can use from Australia, but it's a US product end to end — no AU office and support is email and help-centre, US business hours.

### Does Luma Dream Machine charge in AUD?

No. Luma bills in US dollars only, so your statement amount moves with the exchange rate. GST handling on the imported service isn't shown on the invoice — treat AUD figures as a ballpark, around A$42/month on Plus.

### Is there a free plan or trial?

Yes. The Free tier gives 720p draft-quality, watermarked, non-commercial clips. A sub-$10 legacy Lite tier still appears on the support hub but has dropped off the main pricing page — don't assume it'll survive.

### Does Luma Dream Machine keep my data in Australia?

No. Processing happens on Luma's US servers with no AU hosting option. If you handle client footage or sensitive brand assets, it leaves the country — solve any data-residency requirement before you start.

### Who is Luma Dream Machine best for?

Australian marketers and content studios who want genuinely cinematic short video and care about the quality of the frame above all. Buy it for the output, not the comfort — and put the tax and data questions on your checklist first.
