*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Verdict (TL;DR):** If you already work in IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm or Rider, JetBrains AI is the most natural way to add AI help to your day — it lives inside the editor you already trust, code completion is free and unlimited, and the new Junie agent is a real step up. But the credit-based pricing is hard to predict, there's no AUD billing, and your code is processed on European servers, not Australian ones. A confident pick for existing JetBrains users; not a reason to switch IDEs.

## What JetBrains AI is

JetBrains AI is the built-in artificial-intelligence layer for JetBrains' family of IDEs — IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, GoLand, Rider, PhpStorm, CLion and the rest. It is not a standalone app. It bolts AI features directly into the code editor that millions of developers already use.

There are two distinct things under the one banner, and the difference matters.

**AI Assistant** is the everyday helper: code completion, in-line code generation, a chat panel that knows your project, commit-message drafting, documentation writing, and explanations of unfamiliar code. It sits beside you while you work.

**Junie** is the agent. You give it a task in plain English and it plans the steps, writes and edits files across the project, runs your tests, and reports back. JetBrains moved Junie out of beta on 17 June 2026 — three days before this review — and added agentic debugging that uses the actual IDE debugger: it sets breakpoints, steps through code, and inspects live variables rather than guessing. There's also a standalone Junie CLI for the terminal and CI/CD pipelines.

Under the bonnet, JetBrains AI routes your requests to third-party models — GPT-5, Claude 4.5 Sonnet, Gemini 2.5 Pro and others — rather than running its own. You pick the model in the chat panel.

## What it costs in Australia

There is no AUD price. JetBrains bills the JetBrains AI subscription in US dollars, and its credit system is explicitly priced in US dollars — "each AI Credit equals US$1, charged in your local currency" per the JetBrains documentation. So you pay in AUD at the card-processing exchange rate, but the sticker price is American. On GST, JetBrains' own tax FAQ says treatment "varies by region" — where tax is included you see the exact amount in the store, otherwise it is calculated and added at checkout — but the page doesn't spell out the Australian line specifically. We couldn't confirm the exact GST treatment on an AU JetBrains AI invoice from a primary source, so treat the AUD figures below as a conversion estimates and check the GST line at checkout.

Conversions below use the AID standard rate (US$1 ≈ A$1.40), shown ex-GST; GST treatment on an AU invoice is unconfirmed, so read these as indicative, not invoice-exact.

Two things make this cheaper than it looks for existing customers. First, **code completion and Next Edit Suggestions are free and don't touch your credit balance** — only chat, code generation and agent work draw down credits. Second, **AI Pro is included free with the All Products Pack and dotUltimate subscriptions**, which a lot of professional JetBrains users already pay for.

The catch is the credit meter. A credit buys roughly 10 chat code-generation requests, or \~25 code explanations, or \~140 commit messages, per JetBrains' own estimates — but actual consumption depends on token volume, so a few big agent runs can burn through an Ultimate allowance faster than you'd expect. Top-up credits cost US$1 each (\~A$1.40 on the conversion basis above) and stay valid for 12 months.

## How it works in practice

Because it's inside the IDE, there's no context-switching. You're writing a Python function in PyCharm, completions appear as you type, and a sidebar chat already has your file and project loaded. That's the whole pitch, and it lands. You don't paste code into a browser tab.

Code completion is the part you'll use a hundred times a day, and it's fast and free. The chat is competent for "explain this regex" or "write a test for this method." Junie is where the new value sits: hand it "add pagination to the users endpoint and update the tests," and it'll plan, edit several files, run the suite, and show you the diff before you accept. The debugger integration is the genuinely novel bit — it's the first agent I've used that fixes a failing test by stepping through the running code rather than re-reading the source.

One hard limit: **Junie needs a paid IDE edition.** IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate, PyCharm Professional, WebStorm, Rider and so on. The free Community editions of IntelliJ and PyCharm don't run Junie at all.

## What it does well

- **Zero context-switching.** AI help lives where you already work. For anyone who spends their day in a JetBrains IDE, that's a real daily time saving, not a marketing line.
- **Free, unlimited code completion.** The most-used feature doesn't cost credits. The free tier is genuinely useful, not a teaser.
- **Junie is a capable agent.** Multi-file edits, test runs, and debugger-driven fixes — out of beta as of 17 June 2026, with a CLI for pipelines.
- **Model choice.** GPT-5, Claude 4.5 Sonnet and Gemini 2.5 Pro on the Ultimate tier, switchable per task.
- **Sensible data defaults.** Zero Data Retention by default, and commercial code isn't used to train models without explicit opt-in consent — better than several rivals.

## What it doesn't do well

- **The credit meter is hard to predict.** Pricing in "credits" rather than clear monthly limits means heavy agent users can't easily forecast cost. A few large Junie runs can exhaust an Ultimate quota, then you're buying US$1 top-ups.
- **No AUD billing and US-dollar pricing.** Every figure is American. You carry the exchange-rate risk, and a softer Aussie dollar quietly raises your bill.
- **No Australian data residency.** Code embeddings and collected data are stored in the European Economic Area, with the underlying model providers (e.g. OpenAI) processing in the US. Nothing is hosted in Australia.
- **Junie is locked behind paid IDEs.** If you're on free Community IntelliJ or PyCharm, the headline agent feature is simply unavailable.
- **It's only useful inside JetBrains.** No value if your team works in VS Code, Cursor, or a browser. This is an add-on to an ecosystem, not a portable tool.

## Australian fit

This is the weak spot, and it's the spot we weigh most heavily. There is no AUD billing, no Australian data residency, and no AU-specific support channel — JetBrains support is global and timezone-agnostic. Your source code is processed on European and US infrastructure. For an indie developer or a startup that's fine; for a regulated Australian business — anyone in finance, health, legal or government with data-sovereignty obligations — the EEA/US processing path needs a hard look before you turn on cloud features. The free tier and local-model support (Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp) offer a partial offline escape hatch, which is a point in its favour for the privacy-conscious. But on the criterion that defines this publication, JetBrains AI is built for a global developer, not an Australian one.

## Alternatives

- [**GitHub Copilot**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/github-copilot-review-australia-2026/) — the obvious cross-editor rival. Works in VS Code, JetBrains IDEs and more, with flat per-seat pricing that's easier to forecast than JetBrains' credit meter. Better if you don't live exclusively in JetBrains.
- [**Claude**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/claude-ai-review-australia/) — not an IDE tool, but for developers who want a strong chat-based coding partner alongside any editor, Claude's coding ability is excellent and the pricing is predictable.
- [**Cursor**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/cursor-review-australia-2026/) — a full AI-first editor (a VS Code fork). A bigger commitment, but more aggressive on agentic coding if you're willing to leave JetBrains entirely.

## Bottom line

If you already pay for a JetBrains IDE, turn this on today. Code completion is free, the chat is solid, and Junie is now a real agent worth using. Start on AI Free or the AI Pro that's likely bundled with your subscription, watch the credit meter for a month, and only move to Ultimate if you lean hard on the agent.

If you don't already use JetBrains IDEs, this is not a reason to switch — Copilot gives you similar help across more editors with pricing you can actually predict. And if you're an Australian business with data-residency obligations, verify the EEA/US processing path before you enable cloud features. Very good for the people it's built for; not a universal pick.

Update history
- **9 Oct 2026** — Housekeeping: replaced internal editing references in this history with plain wording. No fact, price or score changed.
- **23 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 Currency re-verified — still USD, no AUD. ⚠ The plan ladder below could NOT be re-verified and may be out of date.** Read on an Australian connection, 23 September 2026\. The **currency half closes**: the page's embedded pricing data carries **USD** and **no `AUD` anywhere**, so this review's no-AUD position stands and `aud_native: false` is set explicitly. **The pricing half does not close, and there is a restructure signal.** The page is now titled *“JetBrains AI Plans & Pricing”* and framed around **“AI in IDEs”**, and the three tier names this review prices — **AI Free, AI Pro and AI Ultimate** — **do not appear in its text at all**. The figures its embedded data does carry (US$299.00, US$239.00, US$179.00 annual; US$24.92, US$19.92, US$14.92 monthly) look like **IDE subscription** prices rather than the AI add-on ladder below. **No figure has been changed**, because the readable content sits behind a consent wall offering only *Accept All* or *Manage Settings*, and accepting a vendor's cookie banner is not something this session will do on the editor's behalf. **Treat the table below as unverified since 20 June 2026 until someone re-reads it with cookies accepted.** We're tracking it for a re-check.

- **24 Sep 2026** — **The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was.** The header read *“gross-up; GST unconfirmed”* and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045\. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, **141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10**. **No figure changed here; only the description of them did.** Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: *gross-up* names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and *GST unconfirmed* is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is **not charged GST** on an imported digital service. **No USD price moved and no score changed.** `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is JetBrains AI available in Australia?

Yes. It's built into JetBrains' IDEs (IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, Rider and more) and works from Australia. Support is global and timezone-agnostic, with no AU-specific channel.

### Does JetBrains AI charge in AUD?

No. The subscription and its credit system are priced in US dollars — each AI Credit equals US$1\. You're charged in AUD at the card-processing rate, so you carry the exchange-rate risk. GST treatment on an AU invoice isn't spelled out, so check the GST line at checkout.

### Is there a free plan or free trial?

Yes. The AI Free tier (US$0) gives unlimited code completion plus 3 monthly credits. AI Pro is also bundled free with the All Products Pack and dotUltimate subscriptions many JetBrains users already pay for.

### Where is my code processed?

Not in Australia. Code embeddings and collected data are stored in the European Economic Area, with model providers (e.g. OpenAI) processing in the US. Defaults are sensible — Zero Data Retention by default, no training on commercial code without opt-in — but a regulated AU business should review the EEA/US path before enabling cloud features.

### Is it worth switching to JetBrains for the AI?

No. If you already live in a JetBrains IDE, turn it on. If you don't, this isn't a reason to switch — GitHub Copilot gives similar help across more editors with pricing that's easier to forecast than the credit meter.
