*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Hedra does one hard thing better than almost anyone: it turns a single photo and a piece of audio or script into a talking avatar with genuinely expressive faces — real emotion, real lip-sync, not the dead-eyed puppets this category is known for. Its Character-3 model is the reason to use it, and it now does real-time "live avatars" too, billed by the minute. For an Australian creator making talking-head social clips, explainers or AI presenters, the output quality is the best in class. The catch is the familiar one: it bills in US dollars with no AUD line, it's hosted in the US with no Australian data region, and the credit system meters every second you generate. As a creative tool it's excellent; as a business system it asks you to manage currency, tax and data yourself. Score: 15/25 — Good.

## What Hedra is

Hedra is an AI content studio built around **talking characters**. You give it an image — a photo, an illustration, an AI-generated face — plus audio or a script, and its flagship **Character-3** model animates that image into a video of the character speaking, with synced lips, head movement and, crucially, facial expression that actually tracks the emotion of the words. It's the expressiveness that sets it apart: where most avatar tools produce a stiff, uncanny presenter, Hedra's faces emote.

The company, Hedra Labs, is based in San Francisco and was founded in 2023 by Alexander Bergman and CEO Michael Lingelbach. It's well backed for its age — a US$32 million Series A in May 2025 led by Andreessen Horowitz's infrastructure fund, with Amazon's Alexa Fund and AWS among the investors, taking total funding to around US$42 million at a roughly US$200 million valuation. That pedigree matters in a category littered with tools that vanish.

In the Australian market, Hedra competes with the avatar-video incumbents we've reviewed — [HeyGen](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/heygen-review-australia-2026/) and [Synthesia](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/synthesia-review-australia-2026/) — but it comes at the problem from a more creator-first, model-first angle. Where Synthesia sells polished corporate-presenter templates, Hedra sells a better underlying character model and, increasingly, **real-time live avatars** you can stream and interact with. Hedra Studio also generates images and audio, so it's a small content suite, not just an avatar button.

## What it costs in Australia

Hedra bills in **US dollars** on a **credit** model, where credits are deducted by the second of video you generate. There is no AUD pricing and no GST line published. The AUD figures below are our conversions at about 1.40 to the US dollar, shown ex-GST.

| Plan | USD/mo | Approx AUD/mo (ex-GST, \~1.40) | Roughly what you get |
| ----- | ------ | ------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Free | $0 | $0 | Free start, no credit card (credit amount not stated on the pricing page) |
| Basic | US$20 | \~A$28 | 2,000 credits a month, slower generations, commercial use |
| Pro | US$50 | \~A$70 | 7,200 credits a month, faster generation |
| Ultra | US$100 | \~A$140 | 18,000 credits a month (allowances up to 57,600), fastest generation |
| Teams | US$75 | \~A$105 | 14,400 credits a month, team access |

A couple of honest notes on the numbers. Hedra has rebuilt its plans since June (Basic rose from US$15 to US$20; Creator and Professional were replaced by Pro, Ultra and Teams, re-read 30 September 2026), so the exact monthly credit figure on each tier drifts — confirm the current allocation on the live pricing page before you subscribe. In June, Character-3 720p video cost roughly **6 credits per second**, so a 30-second clip is about 180 credits and a 60-second clip about 360 — budget by the second, not the clip.

Two pricing details genuinely work in your favour. **Credits from purchased credit packs roll over and don't expire**, even though your monthly subscription credits reset each cycle — a fairer model than rivals whose top-ups lapse. And **live avatar streaming is about US$0.05 per minute** (\~A$0.070 ex-GST), among the cheapest real-time avatar rates going if interactive avatars are your use case.

## How it works in practice

The core workflow takes minutes. You upload a face — a real photo, a character illustration, or an image you generated elsewhere — then add a voice: upload audio, record it, type a script for text-to-speech, or use a cloned voice. Hedra runs Character-3 and returns a video of that character speaking, lip-synced and emoting. For a 30-to-60-second talking-head clip, you're looking at a short generation and a result you can usually use on the first or second try, which is not something you can say of most AI video.

The expressiveness is the thing you notice. Eyebrows lift, the head tilts, the mouth shapes are tight to the audio, and the face carries the tone of the words rather than staring blankly. For social explainers, talking-head ads, faceless-channel narration with a consistent presenter, or a personal AI avatar, that's the difference between "obviously fake" and "good enough to publish."

The newer live-avatar mode pushes into real-time territory: an interactive avatar that responds and speaks on the fly, billed per minute, aimed at things like virtual hosts, demos and interactive characters. It's an early-but-promising differentiator that the template-driven incumbents don't really offer.

## What it does well

- **Best-in-class expressive faces.** Character-3 produces the most natural, emotive talking avatars in the category — the single best reason to choose Hedra.
- **Photo-to-presenter in minutes.** One image plus audio or a script becomes a usable talking-head clip fast, often on the first try.
- **Real-time live avatars.** Interactive, streamed avatars at about US$0.05/minute — a genuine capability the corporate-avatar incumbents largely lack.
- **Credit packs that roll over.** Purchased credits don't expire, which softens the usual credit-meter sting.
- **A small content suite.** Image and audio generation alongside video, plus voice cloning, in one studio.

## What it doesn't do well

- **No Australian anything.** USD-only billing, US hosting, no stated Australian data residency, no documented GST invoice, no local support.
- **The credit meter still bites.** You pay by the second, monthly subscription credits don't roll over, and higher resolutions and longer clips drain the pool quickly.
- **Narrow by design.** It's a talking-character tool, not a general video editor — no broad timeline editing, b-roll generation or scene-building.
- **Likeness and consent risk is on you.** Animating a real person's photo into speech is powerful and easily misused; in Australia, using someone's image or voice without consent carries real legal and reputational risk. That governance is your responsibility.
- **Young company, thin support.** Well-funded but new, with the support depth and documentation gaps that implies.

## Australian fit

Hedra scores poorly here, in line with the category. There's **no AUD pricing** — you pay in US dollars at your card's rate plus any international fee. There's **no GST line** documented; as an offshore digital service, GST may apply under Australia's imported-services rules, but Hedra doesn't state how it's handled, so an ABN-registered buyer claiming an input-tax credit should check the invoice rather than assume. There's **no published Australian data-residency region**, and processing is offshore — which matters more than usual here, because the inputs are often a real person's face and voice. And there's **no local support or AU business hours**. For an Australian creator this is usable, but treat it as a personal creative tool and own the consent and privacy questions yourself.

## Alternatives

- [**Synthesia**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/synthesia-review-australia-2026/) — consider this if you want polished, corporate stock-presenter avatars and templated training or explainer videos at scale.
- [**HeyGen**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/heygen-review-australia-2026/) — consider this for a strong all-round avatar platform with broad language support and translation features.
- [**Runway**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/runway-review-australia-2026/) — consider this if you want general cinematic AI video rather than a talking-head character specifically.

## Bottom line

Hedra is the pick when the *face* is the point. If you're making talking-head social content, a faceless channel with a consistent AI presenter, explainer clips, or experimenting with interactive live avatars, Character-3's expressiveness is the best in the category and worth the subscription. The credit-pack rollover and cheap per-minute live avatars are genuine bright spots in a category that usually nickels-and-dimes you.

It lands at 15/25 for the same reason most of this category does: the Australian fit is weak. USD billing, US hosting, no onshore data and no clean GST invoice mean it's a creative tool you manage around, not a business platform you build on — and the consent questions around animating real faces sit squarely with you. If those constraints are fine for your work, the output quality makes it an easy recommendation in its niche. The category moves fast; we'll revisit Character-3 and the live-avatar pricing as both evolve.

| Ease of Use | 4/5 | Photo plus audio to a polished talking avatar in minutes, usually right on the first try. |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | Best-in-class expressive Character-3 model, real-time live avatars, plus image, audio and voice cloning. |
| Australian Fit | 1/5 | No AUD pricing, no GST line, no stated Australian data residency, no local support — and face/voice consent risk sits with you. |
| Reliability & Support | 3/5 | Well-funded (a16z, Amazon) with a leading model, but a young company with thin support and documentation. |

Update history
- **30 Sep 2026 — re-verified by browser; every paid plan has changed.** `hedra.com/pricing` on an Australian connection: **Basic US$20** a month (2,000 credits), **Pro US$50** (7,200), **Ultra US$100** (18,000), **Teams US$75** (14,400), Enterprise custom, all billed monthly. The June ladder (Basic US$15, Creator US$30, Professional US$75) is gone. The page advertises a free start with no card but no longer states a free-credit figure, so the "100 credits" line is withdrawn. Bare `$`, no `A$`. Table, credit note, VfM note and the pricing FAQ (body and schema) updated; the Colossyan comparison synced. The live-avatar per-minute rate was not re-read. `aud_native: false` already set. Score unchanged. Capture: `Dossiers/captures/hedra-pricing-2026-09-30.txt`; [Wayback 30 Sep 2026](https://web.archive.org/web/20260929195019/https://www.hedra.com/pricing).
- **24 Sep 2026** — **The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was.** The header read *“gross-up; GST unconfirmed”* and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045\. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, **141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10**. **No figure changed here; only the description of them did.** Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: *gross-up* names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and *GST unconfirmed* is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is **not charged GST** on an imported digital service. **No USD price moved and no score changed.** `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.
