*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Verdict in one line:** The most consequential ChatGPT upgrade since GPT-5 — not because it's smarter at trivia, but because it can now competently drive software.

> **📌 Two generations behind — updated 20 September 2026.** This first look covers **GPT-5.4** as it launched in March 2026\. ChatGPT's plan pages now name **GPT-6 Astra** and **GPT-5.6** on Plus and Pro, and **GPT-5.6 Luna** on the free tier. GPT-5.4 is no longer a model most Australians can select. For our current, fully-scored assessment, read the [**full ChatGPT review**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/chatgpt-review-australia/). We've kept this first look in place as a dated record of what GPT-5.4 introduced.
>
> ⚠️ **STALENESS FLAG — 20 September 2026.** This first look was published 18 March 2026 and is **186 days old**. It has not been re-verified against the vendor since. AI products move fast: pricing, model versions, plan names and Australian availability may all have changed. Read the verdict below as a snapshot of March 2026, not as a current recommendation. (House rule: any review over six months old carries this flag until it is updated.)

## What launched

On 5 March 2026 OpenAI released **GPT-5.4**, calling it its most capable model for professional work. It shipped in three flavours — standard, **Thinking** (visible reasoning) and **Pro** — replacing GPT-5.2 Thinking for ChatGPT Plus, Team and Pro users the same day. **GPT-5.4 mini** reached free users on 17 March.

## What it does

Two changes matter for working Australians. First, **native computer use**: GPT-5.4 scored 75% on the OSWorld-Verified benchmark for operating desktop environments — above the average human's 72.4%, and up from GPT-5.2's 47.3%. The model can genuinely navigate applications, not just describe how to. Second, **reliability**: OpenAI reports individual claims are 33% less likely to be wrong than GPT-5.2's, and whole responses 18% less likely to contain an error. The API adds a **1-million-token context window** at US$2.50/M input.

## Pricing for Australians

No price change: GPT-5.4 arrived inside existing **ChatGPT Plus (\~US$20/month, \~A$28 ex-GST)**, Team and Pro plans, with the free tier getting mini. The upgrade economics are simply "same money, better model."

## Australian Fit

Available in Australia day one across all plans. The usual ChatGPT position applies — USD-linked billing, offshore processing, no AU data residency on consumer plans. 3/5.

## Early read

**Good:** the error-rate improvement is noticeable in everyday business use — fewer confidently wrong answers is worth more than any benchmark; computer use opens real workflow automation for non-coders. **Not so good:** computer-use features arrive gradually and unevenly across plans and regions; "Thinking" responses are slower and chew usage limits faster; and benchmark scores are OpenAI's own homework, marked by OpenAI.

## Early verdict

If you already pay for ChatGPT Plus, GPT-5.4 quietly made your subscription better — nothing to do but notice. If you left ChatGPT for a rival in 2025, the reliability gain is the first reason in a while to re-run your comparison.

Update history
- **9 Oct 2026** — Re-checked for the AUD-claim queue (#386): the Plus figure above (\~US$20 a month, \~A$28 ex-GST) is what Australians paid when GPT-5.4 launched in March 2026 and stays as the record. Since then OpenAI has moved consumer billing to native AUD — chatgpt.com/pricing, read in a browser on an Australian connection on 9 Oct, shows Free A$0, Go A$13, Plus A$30 and Pro from A$155 a month — and the current figures live in the [ChatGPT review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/chatgpt-review-australia/). The page lists GPT-6 and GPT-6.1 models and no GPT-5.4, so the July note that GPT-5.5 had taken over is itself history now. Capture: `Dossiers/captures/chatgpt-pricing-2026-10-09.txt`.
- **20 Sep 2026** — Staleness check: vendor page not reachable to the agent; no claims re-verified this pass. OpenAI's launch post, the release notes and the live pricing page all refused us or returned an empty shell. The price, plan and benchmark claims below stand unchecked. The staleness flag has been added at 186 days (house voice rule 8). One thing we can see is a ChatGPT pricing render already on file. It names **GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6** on the paid tiers, *was GPT-5.5* on our 9 July note. The superseded note has been corrected. `last_reviewed` deliberately not bumped. Wayback: capture pending (archive.org unavailable 20 Sep 2026)
- **9 Jul 2026** — Superseded-model note added. GPT-5.4 has since been succeeded by **GPT-5.5** (now default in ChatGPT); forward-linked to the current [ChatGPT review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/chatgpt-review-australia/). Original first look preserved unchanged as a historical record.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is GPT-5.4 available in Australia?

Yes — it arrived in Australia day one across all ChatGPT plans, with GPT-5.4 mini reaching free users on 17 March 2026.

### Does it cost more than before?

No. GPT-5.4 arrived inside existing ChatGPT Plus (\~US$20/month, \~A$28 ex-GST), Team and Pro plans at no price change — the free tier got mini. The upgrade economics are "same money, better model."

### What actually changed for Australian users?

Two things: native computer use (the model can genuinely drive desktop software, scoring 75% on OSWorld-Verified) and better reliability — OpenAI reports individual claims are 33% less likely to be wrong than GPT-5.2.

### Does this change our recommendation?

If you already pay for ChatGPT Plus, GPT-5.4 quietly made your subscription better. If you left ChatGPT for a rival in 2025, the reliability gain is the first reason in a while to re-run your comparison. The usual AU position applies — USD-linked billing, offshore processing, no AU data residency on consumer plans.
