- Description: Genmo's Mochi model is the most accessible open-source AI video generator available — but a thin free tier, US-only data handling, and a product still finding its market make it a niche pick for most Australians.

> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Genmo's Mochi 1 model is a genuine technical achievement — a 10-billion-parameter open-source video generator released under Apache 2.0 licence. For most Australians, though, that matters more to developers who want to self-host than to small-business owners and content creators who want quick, polished video. The free plan is nearly useless beyond a first look, pricing is USD-only, data sits offshore with no AU residency option, and output quality — while impressive for open-source — still trails paid competitors like Runway and Kling. Interesting if you want to experiment with open models. Not a production tool yet.

## What Genmo is

Genmo is a San Francisco-based AI research company founded in 2022 by Ajay and Paras Jain. In October 2024, it released Mochi 1 — at the time the largest open-source video generation model ever released, with 10 billion parameters and an Apache 2.0 licence. That licence means anyone can download the model weights, fine-tune on their own data, and deploy commercially without paying Genmo a cent.

The genmo.ai platform sits on top of that model as a hosted, credit-based service. You write a text prompt, hit generate, and get a short AI video clip — no timeline editing, no audio, no templates. It is a thin web interface over a powerful underlying model.

Genmo raised a USD $28.4 million (\~AUD $40M) Series A led by NEA in 2024\. The company is US-incorporated, US-headquartered, and processes data on US servers.

There are no China-linked ownership concerns with Genmo.

## What it costs in Australia

All pricing is USD. There is no AUD billing, no GST invoicing, and no Australian payment entity.

| Plan | USD/month | AUD/month (approx ×1.40) | Credits/month | Mochi videos |
| -------- | --------- | ------------------------ | ----------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| Free | $0 | $0 | \~50 (estimate) | 0 (insufficient for 1 video at 100 credits/generation) |
| Lite | $10 | \~$14.00 | 1,200 | \~12 |
| Standard | $30 | \~$42.00 | (confirm at genmo.ai/pricing) | Higher volume |

**Notes:** \- Each Mochi video generation costs 100 credits. - The free plan provides approximately 200 onboarding credits (2 videos) plus around 50 credits per month thereafter — effectively zero ongoing free generations at Mochi's credit cost. (verify against genmo.ai/pricing before publication) - Watermarks apply to free-tier outputs; removed on paid plans. - Commercial use requires a paid subscription; free-tier outputs are licensed CC-BY-NC 4.0\. - AUD conversions use AUD ≈ USD 1.40 (September 2026). GST estimates only — Genmo does not charge GST and does not issue Australian tax invoices. - Exchange rate risk: your bank or card provider will apply their own rate and may add a foreign transaction fee.

## How it works in practice

You visit genmo.ai, create an account, and write a text prompt describing the video you want. Click generate, wait (typically 30–90 seconds on paid plans, longer on the free queue), and receive a five-second video clip at up to 480p.

There is no image-to-video mode, no audio, no style controls, and no timeline editor. The interface is minimal: a text box and a generate button. Results are downloaded as MP4 files.

The Mochi 1 model handles motion reasonably well — smooth camera movements and natural-looking subject motion are real strengths. Where it struggles: coherent hands, complex multi-subject scenes, and anything requiring precise visual composition. Five seconds is the clip length ceiling.

For developers, the self-hosted path is the real draw. Download the weights from Hugging Face, run on a capable GPU, and build whatever you want on top of the Apache 2.0 model. The hosted web app is more of a proof-of-concept than a polished product.

---

## What it does well

**Open-source model with genuine commercial freedom.** The Apache 2.0 licence is unusually permissive. Developers and researchers can fine-tune, modify, and deploy Mochi 1 commercially without royalties or restrictions. No other major video model offers this at this scale.

**Reasonable motion quality for the price.** The Lite plan at \~AUD $14.00/month is among the cheapest hosted AI video options. For casual experimentation, that is fair value.

**No lock-in on the model itself.** Because the weights are public, Genmo cannot revoke access or change the model terms retroactively. That is a meaningful practical advantage over API-only competitors.

**Active development.** The team is shipping updates and the open-source community contributes improvements independently of Genmo's own roadmap.

---

## What it doesn't do well

**Almost no free tier in practice.** Two free videos on sign-up, then \~50 credits per month thereafter — nothing at 100 credits per video. Competitors like Kling and Pika offer substantially more usable free allowances.

**Output quality trails paid competitors.** At equivalent price points, Kling AI and Pika produce sharper, higher-resolution, more coherent output. A 480p cap is a real limitation for anyone wanting production-ready content.

**Bare feature set.** No image-to-video, no audio, no templates, no editing tools. If you need to animate a product photo, add background music, or access motion controls — go elsewhere.

**USD-only pricing, no Australian billing entity.** No GST invoice, no AUD payment. For Australian businesses claiming input tax credits, this is an administrative headache. Your accountant will want documentation that does not exist.

**Offshore data, no AU residency option.** Genmo's infrastructure is US-based. If your work involves client data, sensitive brand assets, or any regulated information, read the privacy policy carefully before uploading. There is no data residency option for Australia.

**Product feels unfinished.** The web interface is sparse, documentation is thin, and the product roadmap is unclear publicly. It still feels more like a research demo than a polished SaaS product.

---

## Australian fit

Genmo has essentially no Australian-specific features. Pricing is USD, billing is not GST-compliant, data sits in the US, and there is no AU support channel or local presence.

For Australian developers interested in building on the open-source model, this is genuinely interesting. For Australian small-business owners, content creators, or marketing teams wanting a reliable video tool, it is the wrong choice.

The company is a US-incorporated entity with no Australian operations and no China-linked ownership concerns.

---

## Alternatives

- **Kling AI** — stronger output quality, more features, lower effective cost per video, though China-linked with associated data jurisdiction considerations. See our [Kling AI review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/kling-ai-review-australia-2026/).
- **Runway** — the professional benchmark for AI video in Australia; USD pricing but a far more complete product with image-to-video, motion brush, and audio. See our [Runway review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/runway-review-australia-2026/).
- **Pika** — consumer-friendly, a decent free tier, good motion quality, and closer to a polished daily-use product. See our [Pika review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-pika-australia-2026/).

---

## Bottom line

Genmo's Mochi 1 is a real contribution to open-source AI — the most capable freely downloadable video generation model available. The hosted platform is a different story: thin features, a near-nonexistent free tier, USD-only pricing, and output quality below paid competitors at similar price points.

For Australian developers who want to build on an open-source video model, Mochi is the clear starting point. For everyone else, there are better-polished tools at similar or lower prices.

**Recommended for:** AI developers and researchers exploring open-source video models. **Not recommended for:** General video content creation, marketing production, or anyone needing AUD billing or AU data residency.

Update history
- **24 Sep 2026** — **The grossed-up AUD column removed from the pricing table.** The table carried a second Australian column adding 10% GST to every converted figure, so each plan had two Australian prices and the higher one asserted a tax most of our readers do not pay: a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is **not charged GST** on an imported digital service. The ex-GST column is unchanged and is the price. Removed, and kept visible here per our price-history rule — the column headed *“AUD if GST charged (+10%)”*: Free **$0**; Lite **\~$15.40**; Standard **\~$46.20**. `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Genmo AI free to use in Australia?

Genmo has a free plan, but it is extremely limited in practice. You receive approximately 200 onboarding credits (2 Mochi videos), then around 50 credits per month — not enough for a single Mochi video generation, which costs 100 credits. The paid Lite plan starts at USD $10/month (approximately AUD $14.00) for 1,200 credits.

### Can Australian businesses use Genmo commercially?

Commercial use requires a paid Genmo subscription. The free tier is licensed under CC-BY-NC 4.0 (non-commercial only). Paid plans include commercial usage rights. However, Genmo does not provide GST-compliant invoices or AUD billing, which may create accounting complexity for Australian businesses.

### What makes Mochi different from other AI video tools?

Mochi 1 is notable for being open-source under an Apache 2.0 licence — developers can download the model weights, fine-tune them, and deploy commercially for free. It is the largest open-source video generation model currently available. As a hosted web product, however, it has fewer features and lower output quality than paid competitors like Runway or Kling.
