> **The verdict:** Digits is a genuinely impressive piece of software — an AI-native general ledger built from scratch, not a legacy accounting tool with AI stapled on top. The bookkeeping automation is real, the interface is clean, and the product is attracting serious attention in the US market. None of that matters for Australians right now. Digits explicitly restricts its service to US-based entities. No Australian bank connections. No AUD support. No GST. Not available here. Score: 15/25 — Good.

## What it is

Digits is an AI-native accounting platform founded in 2018 by Jeff Seibert and Wayne Chang, and headquartered in San Francisco, California. The company has raised approximately US$98 million from investors including Benchmark, Google Ventures, and SoftBank.

The core idea: replace legacy accounting software — QuickBooks, Xero, MYOB — with a platform built around AI agents from day one. Digits calls this its "Agentic General Ledger" (AGL). Rather than reviewing every transaction manually, business owners and their accountants interact with flagged exceptions. The AI handles the routine categorisation; humans review the edge cases.

It connects to over 12,000 US banks and financial institutions via Plaid, pulls in transactions in real time, and maintains live P&L statements, balance sheets, and cash flow views. The "Ask Digits" feature lets you query your own financials in plain English — something like "How much did we spend on software last quarter?" — and get an immediate answer from your actual books.

Digits was named a 2026 Top New Product for Accountants by Accounting Today.

The problem, for Australian readers, is stated plainly on Digits' own pricing page: "Currently, our services are available only to U.S.-based entities."

## What it costs in Australia (AUD + GST)

Digits prices in USD only. There is no AUD pricing, no GST handling, and no Australian billing. The table below is for reference only — these plans are not available to Australian businesses.

| Plan | USD/month | Approx AUD/month | GST treatment | Available in AU? |
| ------------------- | --------- | ---------------- | ----------------------------------- | ---------------- |
| Essentials | US$65 | \~A$91 | Not applicable — AU sign-up blocked | No |
| Core | US$100 | \~A$140 | Not applicable — AU sign-up blocked | No |
| Pro ("Coming soon") | US$250 | \~A$350 | Not applicable — AU sign-up blocked | No |

AUD conversion at ×1.40 (approximate rate, September 2026). No GST applies: Digits restricts sign-up to US-based entities, so no Australian billing relationship exists. The pricing page notes that sales tax (US) may apply depending on location; no AU GST obligation arises while the service remains unavailable to Australian businesses.

A 30-day free trial is available for US-based users. Bill-pay transactions incur additional per-transaction fees on top of the subscription; Digits' pricing page does not publish the amounts, directing users to its Help Centre instead. Third-party software directories report figures in the order of US$0.50 per ACH transfer and US$2.00 per cheque, but these are not confirmed on a Digits-owned page — treat them as indicative, not quoted.

For accounting firms, Digits offers a separate per-client pricing structure ranging from US$35 to US$250 per client per month, depending on firm size and plan tier.

## How it works / features

For US businesses that can access it, Digits operates through a set of specialised AI agents running in parallel:

**Bookkeeper Agent** categorises transactions 24/7 using patterns it learns from your business. Unlike rule-based systems that require you to configure every category, it infers context and improves over time.

**Reconciliation Agent** matches transactions to bank statements automatically. Month-end reconciliation becomes a confirmation step rather than a reconstruction exercise.

**Quality Review Agent** flags low-confidence categorisations before they hit the ledger. You see exceptions, not a list of every transaction.

**Accrual Schedule Agent** (Pro plan only) automates depreciation and amortisation entries — the kind of work that typically requires an accountant's manual intervention each month.

**Agentic Close** (Pro plan only) is Digits' most ambitious feature: automated month-end close. It runs through the close checklist, surfaces issues, and marks items complete as it goes.

**Ask Digits** is a conversational interface over your own financial data. You ask a question in plain English; it queries your actual books and returns an answer. No spreadsheet export required.

The platform also handles invoicing (create and send to customers), bill pay (drag-and-drop invoice processing with approval workflows), and dimensional accounting — tracking revenue and costs across departments, locations, or projects.

Integration-wise, Digits connects natively to Gusto (payroll), Stripe (revenue), Ramp (spend management), Mercury (banking), and BILL (vendor payments). A developer API and Model Context Protocol (MCP) support allows connections to AI tools including Claude and ChatGPT.

## What it does well

**The AI is functional, not theatrical.** Many accounting tools now market "AI" that amounts to a chatbot layered over standard reports. Digits built its ledger architecture around AI agents from day one. The result is a system where automation genuinely reduces the work of bookkeeping rather than simply repackaging it.

**Real-time financials, actually real-time.** Transactions appear and are categorised as they happen. Your P&L at 3pm Tuesday reflects what actually happened by 3pm Tuesday — not last month's close. For business owners who want to understand their financial position now, not after month end, this matters.

**The interface is genuinely clean.** Digits looks like a product designed in 2024, not 2004\. The Inbox-first workflow consolidates flagged items, team messages, and outstanding reviews in one place. Context switching between different modules is minimal.

**Firm-friendly architecture.** For US-based accounting practices, Digits offers a per-client model with unlimited team seats, centralised billing, and task management — a direct pitch at CPA firms looking to automate their bookkeeping workflows across a client portfolio.

## Where it falls short

**It is not available in Australia.** This is not a limitation or a caveat — it is a hard stop. Digits explicitly restricts sign-up to US-based entities. An Australian business owner cannot subscribe. The platform does not support Australian bank connections (it uses Plaid, which has limited coverage outside the US), does not handle AUD, and has no GST functionality. There is no workaround.

**No timeline for international expansion.** The FAQ mentions a commitment to "expanding globally" but provides no timeline, no country list, and no waitlist. "Hope to serve businesses outside the U.S. in the future" is not a roadmap.

**US-centric integrations throughout.** Stripe and Ramp work globally, but Gusto (US payroll), Mercury (US banking), and BILL (US bill payments) are all US-specific tools. Even if Digits opened to international signups tomorrow, its integration stack would need significant work before it would be useful for Australian businesses.

**No multi-currency support.** Even for US businesses dealing with international clients or vendors, multi-currency accounting is not a current feature.

**Early-stage ecosystem.** Compared to QuickBooks or Xero, Digits has a smaller marketplace of third-party add-ons and integrations. The API is open, but the library of pre-built connectors is thin.

**Bill pay carries per-transaction fees.** Digits charges separately for ACH transfers and cheques on top of the subscription, but does not publish the amounts on its pricing page. Third-party directories cite figures around US$0.50 per ACH and US$2 per cheque; at that order of magnitude a business processing 100 supplier payments a month would add roughly US$50–$200 in transaction costs. Confirm the actual rates with Digits before relying on them.

**No inventory management.** Digits is built for service businesses, agencies, and SaaS companies. If your business tracks physical inventory, it is not the right tool.

## Australian fit

Digits scores poorly on every Australian Fit criterion — not because the product is bad, but because it was built exclusively for the US market and has not been extended elsewhere.

| Australian bank connections | Not supported — Plaid is US-focused |
| GST handling | None — no BAS, no GST categorisation |
| ATO compliance | None |

| AU-specific integrations | None — Gusto, Mercury, BILL are US-only tools |

Data is hosted in the United States. Digits holds SOC 2 Type II certification, which is a credible security baseline, but provides no information about data residency options for international customers — a question that is academic until the product becomes available outside the US.

For Australian businesses, the practical assessment is straightforward: you cannot sign up, you cannot connect your Australian bank account, and you cannot generate a GST-compliant report. Digits is currently a US product.

> **Note:** Digits does not replace tailored advice from a qualified accountant or tax adviser. Treat its output as a starting point, not a final position.

**Tax Practitioners Board guidance (final, 22 July 2026).** If a registered tax or BAS agent runs Digits's AI features on your file, the TPB's Guidance Statement TPB(GS) 55/2026 applies to the agent, not the software: they stay accountable for the accuracy of every output, must exercise their own judgement rather than rely on the AI, and must not put your information into an AI model without your permission and a clear answer on where the data is stored. Nothing here changes those obligations — and none of it replaces advice from a registered practitioner. *Note: the raw score of 15/25 would ordinarily sit in the ★★★ Good band. The Australian Fit gate does not reduce stars here — the band is ★★★ Good regardless. The gate is noted for transparency: this tool cannot be named a category Top Pick while Australian Fit remains at 1/5.*

## Bottom line

**If you are a US-based small business owner or accounting firm:** Digits is worth a serious look. The AI-native architecture is genuinely different from the competition. The 30-day free trial costs nothing, and the Core plan at US$100/month is competitive against QuickBooks and Xero for service-based businesses. Wait for the Essentials tier if budget is tight.

**If you are an Australian business owner:** Digits is not available to you. Full stop. Check back in 12–24 months — the product is well-funded and has stated global ambitions — but right now it is a US-only tool and there is no timeline on international launch.

**If you are an Australian accountant or bookkeeper:** Watch Digits from a professional development perspective. The agentic approach to bookkeeping automation is a genuine preview of where the industry is heading. But do not position it to clients; you cannot deliver it to anyone in Australia.

For Australian businesses looking for AI-assisted bookkeeping today, the options with actual local support are Xero (with its AI features), MYOB, and a growing number of tools that layer AI on top of ATO-compliant platforms. None of them match Digits' architectural ambition, but they actually work in Australia.

Update history
- **30 Sep 2026 — re-verified by browser; negative confirmed, and still closed to Australians.** `digits.com/pricing` on an Australian connection: Essentials $65, Core $100 and Pro $250 a month, all unchanged; Pro's button now reads "Coming soon". The FAQ still says "Currently, our services are available only to U.S.-based entities", and the 30-day free trial is unchanged. Bare `$`, no `A$`. `aud_native: false` already set. Score unchanged. ## Frequently asked questions

### Is Digits available in Australia?

No. Digits explicitly restricts its service to US-based entities — its own pricing page states "Currently, our services are available only to U.S.-based entities." An Australian business cannot sign up, and there's no workaround.

### Does Digits charge in AUD?

No. Pricing is USD only (Essentials US$65/mo, Core US$100/mo, Pro US$250/mo), with no AUD billing and no GST handling. Since sign-up is blocked for Australian entities, no Australian billing relationship exists at all.

### Can I connect my Australian bank?

No. Digits connects to US banks via Plaid, which has limited coverage outside the US, and its key integrations (Gusto, Mercury, BILL) are US-only tools. There's no GST or BAS functionality and no ATO compliance.

### Will Digits come to Australia?

There's no timeline. Digits' FAQ mentions a commitment to "expanding globally" but gives no country list, no date and no waitlist. For Australian buyers, check back in 12–24 months; for now, use Xero, MYOB or another ATO-compliant platform that actually works here.
