> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Underlord turns hours of video editing into minutes. For Australian podcasters, marketers, and small business content creators who want to produce short-form clips from longer recordings without learning a traditional timeline editor, it is one of the better tools on the market. The credit system can feel opaque, the pricing is USD-only, and your footage lives on US servers — none of which are dealbreakers, but all of which deserve to be on the table before you commit.

## What Descript Underlord is

Underlord is Descript's AI video and podcast editing agent, embedded inside the Descript desktop and browser application. Where older versions of Descript let you edit video by editing a transcript, Underlord goes further: you give it a plain-English instruction and it carries out multi-step editing workflows on your behalf.

Tell Underlord to "find the three most shareable moments and turn them into vertical clips with captions," and it will do exactly that — scan the transcript, identify high-conflict or high-energy moments, make the cuts, add animated captions, reframe to vertical, and deliver three ready-to-post clips. It can also write show notes, generate YouTube descriptions, fix audio with Studio Sound, remove filler words and retakes, create AI avatars, translate captions into 61 languages, and dub audio into 30 languages.

The key distinction from tools like Opus Clip or Klap is that Underlord is an agent inside a full video editor. You can take what it produces, open it in Descript's timeline, and keep editing manually. Most pure AI clipping tools give you the clips and little else.

Descript was founded in 2017 and is headquartered in San Francisco. It is a private company backed by Andreessen Horowitz, among others. The Underlord feature was introduced in 2023 and significantly expanded in 2025 and 2026, becoming the primary face of Descript's AI offering.

## What it costs in Australia

Underlord is not a separate product. It is built into every Descript plan, though the free plan limits how much you can use it. All pricing is in USD. There is no AUD billing option. GST is not included in the listed prices — Australian subscribers may be charged GST on top depending on their billing circumstances.

Prices shown are billed annually. Monthly billing costs 35–46% more.

| Plan | USD/month (annual) | AUD/month (approx., ex-GST) | Underlord access | AI credits/month |
| ---------- | ------------------ | --------------------------- | ------------------- | ---------------- |
| Free | $0 | $0 | Limited | 100 (one-time) |

AI credits are consumed every time you use an AI feature. Underlord conversations use credits even when you are just chatting. A single "find my best clips" run on a 45-minute podcast can consume 100–300 credits depending on output length and model used — this is variable and Descript is transparent that "the same task can use different amounts of credits." On the Hobbyist plan at 400 credits per month, heavy Underlord use can exhaust your allocation in a week. The Creator plan's 800 credits (plus occasional 500-credit bonus) is more workable for regular users.

Top-up credits are available to purchase if you run out.

## How it works in practice

You import a video or audio recording into Descript. The platform transcribes it automatically. From there, you can open the Underlord panel and type a request: "make a 60-second clip of the most interesting moment," "remove all filler words," "write show notes," or "generate a social caption for LinkedIn."

For clip generation, Underlord reads the transcript, identifies segments, makes the edits in the Descript timeline, and presents the result. You can accept it, modify it, or try again with a different prompt. For audio cleanup, it applies Studio Sound and filler-word removal in one action.

The text-based editing model is Descript's core product. Underlord sits on top of it. Delete a word from the transcript, and the corresponding audio and video disappear from the timeline. This is still the fastest way to edit talking-head content for non-editors.

---

## What it does well

**Clip generation is legitimately fast.** A 45-minute podcast can yield five to ten candidate short-form clips in under five minutes. The clip selection is reasonable — Underlord leans toward moments with strong statements, clear transitions, or high-energy exchanges.

**The full editing environment matters.** Unlike standalone clipping tools, you can open any Underlord-generated clip in the Descript timeline and adjust it manually. This is a meaningful advantage for creators who want control over the final result.

**Filler word removal and audio cleanup are excellent.** Studio Sound removes background noise and levels audio reliably. Remove Filler Words works well on clear Australian speech. These two features alone justify the tool for podcasters.

**Caption quality is high.** Descript's transcription covers English well, with dynamic animated captions that look professional without requiring manual styling.

**Multilingual output.** Caption translation across 61 languages, plus AI dubbing in 30 languages, is genuinely useful for Australian businesses with international audiences or multilingual teams.

---

## What it doesn't do well

**The credit system is opaque.** Descript does not provide a clear "this task costs X credits" guide before you run it. You find out afterwards. For small business owners budgeting carefully, this unpredictability is frustrating.

**Underlord's clip selection misses context.** The AI identifies strong transcript segments but does not always understand narrative structure. A training webinar, a sales demo, or a client testimonial video may need significant manual curation of Underlord's output before it is usable.

**No AUD billing.** Every charge hits your card in USD. With the Australian dollar fluctuating, a plan advertised at "\~A$34/month" may land higher or lower depending on exchange rates and your card's foreign transaction fee.

**Data lives in the US.** Descript stores media on Amazon S3 or Google Cloud in the United States. For Australian businesses handling sensitive client content — legal consultations, medical consultations, financial advice recordings — this is a genuine compliance consideration. Descript is SOC 2 Type II certified and GDPR-compliant, but there is no Australian data residency option.

**Underlord is not available offline.** All AI processing requires a live internet connection and active subscription. The desktop app works offline for basic editing but Underlord features are cloud-dependent.

**English-language bias.** Transcription supports 25 languages, but Underlord's clip-finding and content understanding is optimised for English. Non-English content produces weaker clip selection results.

---

## Australian fit

**Caption accuracy for Australian accents:** Generally good on standard Australian accents. Broad accents, strong regional dialects, and Australian Aboriginal English can produce more errors. Australian place names (Woolloomooloo, Parramatta, Geelong) are sometimes mangled in transcription. Always proof captions before publishing. Default captions use American English spelling — "realize," "color," "organize" — and there is no option to set the caption output to Australian English. You will need to manually correct these before your content goes out.

**AUD pricing:** USD-only. No AUD option. Foreign currency charges apply.

**Data residency:** US-based storage (Amazon S3 / Google Cloud US). No Australian data residency. Not suitable for content subject to strict local data governance requirements.

**Commercial use of outputs:** Descript grants users a licence to use outputs for personal or internal business use. Stock media included via Storyblocks carries a commercial licence under the Storyblocks EULA. If you are uploading client content, check that you hold the necessary rights to share it with Descript's servers. Always review the current Terms of Service at descript.com/terms.

**GST:** Descript does not appear to add GST to Australian subscriptions at the listed price level, but this is not explicitly confirmed on the pricing page. Verify with your accountant whether GST applies to your subscription.

- **Opus Clip:** Purpose-built for the long-to-short clipping workflow with a simpler interface. See our [Opus Clip review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-opus-clip-australia-2026/) for comparison.
- **VEED.io:** A capable browser-based video editor with AI subtitle generation and clip tools. See our [VEED review](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-veed-australia-2026/).

## Bottom line

Underlord is a genuinely capable AI editing agent for content creators who want to get more out of their long-form recordings. It is the best option in this review batch if you want AI-powered clipping *inside* a full editing environment rather than as a standalone clip factory.

The limitations for Australians are real: USD pricing with no AUD option, US data storage, a credit system that requires careful tracking, and captions that default to American spelling. None of these are unusual for this category — most competing tools have the same profile — but they matter if you are producing content at volume or handling client recordings.

**Best for:** Australian podcasters, marketers, and content creators producing regular long-form video or audio content who want to automate clip creation and audio cleanup. Strong if you also want to keep manual editing control.

**Think twice if:** You need Australian data residency, you are on a tight budget (the credit system can surprise you), or you want a simpler, cheaper tool just for clipping.

Update history
- **30 Sep 2026 — re-verified by browser; prices hold, the bonus credits are gone.** `descript.com/pricing` on an Australian connection: Hobbyist $16, Creator $24 and Business $50 a person a month on annual billing ($24 / $35 / $65 monthly); AI credits 100 one-time on Free, then 400, 800 and 1,500 a month. The "+500 bonus" and "+1,000 bonus" credits this table carried on Creator and Business are no longer on the page and are removed. Bare `$`, no `A$`. `aud_native: false` already set. Score unchanged. Capture: `Dossiers/captures/descript-pricing-2026-09-30.txt`; [Wayback 30 Sep 2026](https://web.archive.org/web/20260929183622/https://www.descript.com/pricing).
- **24 Sep 2026** — **The grossed-up AUD column removed from the pricing table.** The table carried a second Australian column adding 10% GST to every converted figure, so each plan had two Australian prices and the higher one asserted a tax most of our readers do not pay: a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is **not charged GST** on an imported digital service. The ex-GST column is unchanged and is the price. Removed, and kept visible here per our price-history rule — the column headed *“AUD/month (approx., if GST charged, +10%)”*: Free **$0**; Hobbyist **\~A$24**; Creator **\~A$37**; Business **\~A$77**. `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.
