*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Crowdin is the most accessible serious localisation platform on the market. A genuine free tier, published pricing, AI translation charged at direct API cost (no markup), and 750+ integrations make it the right starting point for Australian software teams, marketers, and businesses going multilingual for the first time. It is not as feature-deep as Phrase or Smartling at the enterprise level, but for most Australian organisations, it covers everything they actually need.

## What Crowdin Is

Crowdin is a cloud-based localisation management platform founded in 2009 by Ukrainian developer Serhiy Dmytryshyn. What started as a hobby project for small open-source translations grew into a platform with over 3 million registered users by 2024, used by the teams behind Minecraft, Khan Academy, Notion, and Figma.

The core platform manages the full translation workflow: you upload source content (or connect your repository), translators (human or AI) work on it in Crowdin's online editor, and you pull translated files back into your product or website. Crowdin handles translation memory, glossaries, quality assurance, and project management.

Crowdin's AI positioning is practical rather than promotional. The platform integrates with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Microsoft Azure OpenAI, and other AI providers — and charges you the direct API rate from those providers with no markup. This is a materially different approach from platforms that bundle AI translation at a fixed per-word rate.

Crowdin also offers Crowdin Enterprise, a separate product for larger organisations that adds private organisations, advanced workflow controls, enterprise-grade security, and custom branding. The two products share a codebase but are distinct offerings with separate pricing.

## What It Costs in Australia

Crowdin publishes all pricing transparently on its website. Prices are in USD and exclude GST (noted explicitly on the Crowdin pricing page).

**Crowdin (for individuals and teams) — monthly pricing, billed annually for 2-months-free discount:**

| Plan | Price/month (USD) | Approx. AUD/month (×1.40) | Key limits |

*Source: Crowdin Pricing page (crowdin.com/pricing), accessed 26 June 2026\. Crowdin explicitly notes prices exclude VAT, GST, or other applicable taxes. AUD conversion at \~1.40\. A 16% discount applies on annual billing (equivalent to 2 months free). Exchange rate as of September 2026.*

**AI translation costs:** Crowdin does not charge a platform fee for AI. You connect your own OpenAI, Anthropic or Google API key and pay provider rates directly — Crowdin's own feature page says it supports “10+ providers” and “dozens of AI translation models” without naming them (checked 21 September 2026), so the bill is set by whichever model you pick, not by Crowdin. **Price it against the model you actually select, on that provider's own rate card.** An earlier version of this review worked the example against OpenAI's GPT-4o at roughly USD $0.01–$0.03 per 1,000 tokens; that model is now legacy and the band no longer guides anyone, so it has been withdrawn — see the update history. ⚠️ The AUD conversion that accompanied it was also arithmetically impossible (it read “AUD $0.001–$0.001 per word”, below the USD figure it converted) and is **flagged for the currency sweep** rather than re-guessed here.

**Human translation:** Available via Crowdin Language Services. Pricing is project-based; request a quote through the platform.

**GST for Australian businesses:** Crowdin is a Ukrainian company with global operations. As an imported digital service, Crowdin subscriptions attract Australian GST at 10% — add 10% to the AUD figures above. The Team plan at approximately A$251/month becomes approximately A$305/month including GST. Confirm with your accountant.

## How It Works in Practice

The workflow starts with your source content. You upload files (Crowdin supports over 50 file formats including JSON, YAML, PO, XLIFF, XML, CSV, Markdown, and more) or connect directly via integration (GitHub, GitLab, Figma, WordPress, Shopify, and 700+ others).

Translators then work in Crowdin's online translation editor. The editor shows source strings, existing translation memory matches, glossary terms, and AI translation suggestions side by side. Proofreaders review and approve. You download the finished files or let Crowdin push them back to your repository automatically.

The AI integration is where Crowdin distinguishes itself for cost-conscious organisations. Rather than charging a fixed per-word rate like Smartling (from USD $0.06/word for AI translation), Crowdin passes through provider API costs. For high-volume automated translation, this can be significantly cheaper — though you need to supply your own API credentials and manage provider relationships.

Crowdin's over-the-air (OTA) content delivery is worth noting. Mobile app developers can push translation updates to live iOS and Android apps without a new app store submission, using Crowdin's CDN. For teams maintaining apps across multiple markets, this removes a major release friction point.

The free tier is genuinely functional for open-source projects and small teams with only public projects. For any business work with private content, the Pro plan at USD $59/month (approx. A$83 + GST) is the practical minimum.

---

## What It Does Well

**Transparent, accessible pricing.** Every tier is published. You know before you sign up that Team costs USD $179/month, that annual billing saves you two months, and that AI translation costs you exactly what the AI provider charges. No sales call required.

**Real free tier.** The free plan includes unlimited public projects, unlimited translators, Crowdin AI, and core features. For open-source developers or teams willing to work with public projects, this is a genuinely useful free option — not just a crippled trial.

**AI at cost price.** Passing through provider API rates is a fair and unusual pricing model. At scale, this matters: a team translating 100,000 words/month would pay significantly less for AI translation through Crowdin than through platforms with fixed per-word rates.

**750+ integrations.** GitHub, GitLab, Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, Jira, Slack, Notion, WordPress, Shopify, and hundreds more. The integration depth rivals Smartling without the enterprise price tag.

**Developer-native design.** CLI tools, REST API, SDKs for iOS and Android, and native integrations with code review workflows. Teams building software products will find Crowdin fits their development workflow better than most TMS tools.

**ISO 27001 certified security.** Annual penetration testing and GDPR compliance via Standard Contractual Clauses. Solid for a mid-market platform.

**14-day free trial on paid plans.** Test the Team plan before committing. Crowdin Enterprise has a 30-day trial.

**Australian English (en-AU) supported.** Crowdin's language code documentation confirms en-AU is a supported locale. This is table stakes for any platform claiming international coverage, but worth confirming.

---

## What It Doesn't Do Well

**UI complexity grows with project scale.** Crowdin's interface is functional but not polished. Managing dozens of projects across multiple languages and translators becomes unwieldy without good project hygiene. Enterprise TMS tools like Phrase or Smartling have more mature project management interfaces.

**No Australian data centre.** Crowdin uses US and EU data centres. Australia is not listed as a storage location. For Australian businesses with Privacy Act obligations — particularly those handling personal information in source content (e.g., employee communications, customer data) — this requires a legal review before proceeding. The GDPR-compliant EU option is available; an Australian-specific option is not.

**No AUD pricing.** All plans are in USD. Add currency conversion costs and GST. Invoicing will be in USD.

**The "hosted words" metric is confusing.** Hosted words = source words × number of target languages. A 10,000-word document going into five languages uses 50,000 hosted words. The Pro plan's 60,000 limit runs out quickly if you are translating into multiple languages. Budget carefully and use the Crowdin pricing calculator before committing to a tier.

**Crowdin vs. Crowdin Enterprise is not obvious.** The two products are sold separately and have different feature sets. Many enterprise features — advanced workflows, teams management, private organisations, advanced security — require Crowdin Enterprise, which has custom pricing. The split creates confusion about what you are actually getting on the standard plans.

**Machine translation quality varies by language pair.** AI translation through Crowdin is only as good as the underlying model. For English-to-standard-European-languages, quality is high. For less common language pairs, or for nuanced content requiring cultural localisation rather than direct translation, plan for substantial human review.

**No phone support.** Support is email/ticket. Australian businesses working across time zones will find response times slow for urgent issues.

---

## Australian Fit

Crowdin is the most affordable and accessible localisation platform reviewed here, but "accessible" and "designed for Australia" are different things.

- **AUD pricing:** No. USD-denominated. Figures are ex-GST: a GST-registered business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers add \~10%. as an imported digital service.
- **Data residency:** US and EU data centres. No Australian region. Privacy Act review required for content containing personal information.
- **Australian English (en-AU):** Supported as a language code. No specific Australian English tooling or quality checks.
- **Support:** Email/ticket. No Australian office, no AU-hours phone support.
- **GST:** Explicitly excluded from published pricing. You are responsible for GST on imported digital services.

For Australian software companies going international, Crowdin is an excellent tool: the developer integrations, free tier, and transparent AI pricing make it a natural fit. For Australian businesses localising content to serve Asian markets (Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Bahasa), Crowdin handles those language pairs competently.

The data residency question is the main caution. If your localisation projects include any personal information — even employee training content or customer-facing account notifications — get legal advice before storing that content on US or EU servers.

**Australian Fit score: 3/5.** Better than most competitors at this price point. Transparent pricing and en-AU support are positives. Offshore data storage and no AUD billing are the primary gaps.

## Alternatives

- [**DeepL**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-deepl-australia-2026/) — For simpler, ad-hoc translation without a full TMS workflow. DeepL is faster to set up and excellent for document or text translation. Not suitable for continuous localisation or developer string management. Reviewed on The AI Directory.
- **Phrase** — Full TMS with more enterprise workflow depth. Better for organisations that need advanced translation memory management, video localisation, or complex multi-step review workflows. More expensive and harder to set up. See our Phrase review.
- **Smartling** — Enterprise-grade platform for large organisations with dedicated localisation teams. Best-in-class feature depth and integration breadth, but sales-led pricing and significant setup complexity. See our Smartling review.

---

## Bottom Line

Crowdin is the right answer for most Australian organisations that are serious about localisation but not ready for (or not sized for) enterprise platforms like Smartling or Phrase. The free tier is genuine, the pricing is transparent, the AI cost pass-through is fair, and the developer integrations are excellent.

The platform is not perfect. The hosted-words metric requires careful planning. The UI is functional rather than beautiful. And the absence of Australian data residency is a real issue for organisations whose content contains personal information.

But for a software company going international, a marketing team translating campaigns for Asian markets, or a business starting to think seriously about multilingual content — Crowdin is the best starting point on the market at this price point.

**Recommended for:** Australian software teams building for international markets; marketing teams managing multilingual content across platforms; any organisation starting a localisation programme that wants transparent pricing and a genuine free tier to test the workflow.

**Not recommended for:** Organisations with strict Privacy Act data residency requirements; teams needing phone support; projects where translated content requires minimal human review of AI output (budget for review time regardless of which platform you use).

Update history
- **9 Oct 2026** — Housekeeping: replaced internal editing references in this history with plain wording. No fact, price or score changed.
- **21 Sep 2026** — **No first-party Crowdin app on the Australian App Store.** Nothing published under crowdin.com; the search returns unrelated apps. The "Android app" this review mentions is Crowdin's mobile **SDK** for translating an app you build, not a consumer app you buy, so there is no app-store currency question here at all. USD pricing stands unqualified. Searched Apple's own Australian storefront endpoint (`itunes.apple.com/search?country=au&entity=software`) and matched each result on its declared **`sellerUrl`** rather than its publisher name — the method that resolved Msty (CloudStack, LLC → msty.ai) and Bluedot (Twiso Inc. → bluedothq.com) the same day, both of which the 21 September pass had recorded as untraceable. Checked 21 September 2026 by the app-store apply pass, `Audits/app-store-apply-2026-09-21.md`. Re-check if the vendor announces a mobile app.
- **21 Sep 2026** — Model-claims check (our sourcing rules). **Withdrawn:** the GPT-4o per-token cost band in the AI-translation pricing note. Crowdin does not name a model anywhere — its AI translation feature page says only “10+ providers” and “dozens of AI translation models” (checked 21 September 2026) — and this is a bring-your-own-key product, so the model is the reader's choice and GPT-4o is now a legacy one. The note now tells you to price against the model you pick. **Flagged, not actioned:** the AUD range attached to that band was arithmetically impossible — “approximately AUD $0.001–$0.001 per word”, a single repeated figure, and lower than the USD number it was converting. That is a currency defect, not a model claim, and our AUD pricing rule requires a dated rate this sweep is not the right place to set. Queued for the currency sweep. Score unchanged. `reviewed:` not moved.
