> **The verdict:** Crisp is a well-built live chat and AI customer support platform with genuine depth at a reasonable price point. For a bootstrapped French company with 25-odd staff, the feature set is impressive — omnichannel inbox, no-code AI chatbot builder, Hugo AI agent, knowledge base, and a CRM-lite all bundled together. The free tier lets you test it properly, and the Essentials plan at US$95/mo (\~A$133/mo) gives a small business team of ten more than most comparable tools at twice the price. The problem for Australians isn't the product — it's the infrastructure. Customer data is stored on servers in the Netherlands, there is no Australian data region, billing is USD-only with no AUD option, and while Crisp adds no GST it also issues no Australian tax invoice. For a business handling sensitive customer conversations, those aren't footnotes. Score: 14/25 — Good.

## What it is

Crisp is a customer support platform founded in 2015 and headquartered in Nantes, France. It is 100% bootstrapped — no VC funding — and serves more than 600,000 users globally.

The core product is a shared team inbox that consolidates messages from your website chat widget, email, WhatsApp, Instagram DMs, Facebook Messenger, SMS, Telegram, and more. On top of that sits a knowledge base builder, a no-code chatbot builder, an AI agent called Hugo, a lightweight CRM, and an analytics suite.

The pitch is that you replace several tools — Intercom, Zendesk, Freshdesk, a separate chatbot, a separate knowledge base — with one platform at a fraction of the combined cost. It's a credible pitch. The execution is better than most tools at this price level.

Crisp is aimed squarely at small and medium businesses, not enterprise teams. Its sweet spot is roughly 2–50 support staff. Above that, the ticketing system starts to creak and satisfaction drops — more on that below.

## What it costs in Australia (AUD + GST)

All prices are in USD. There is no AUD billing option. Prices below use an exchange rate of approximately A$1.40 to US$1.

| Plan | USD/month | Approx AUD/month | Seats | AI Credits included | Key features |
| ---------- | --------- | ---------------- | ------ | -------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------- |

| Mini | $45 | \~A$63 | 4 | \~$5 (\~90 AI conversations) | Email inbox, shortcuts, triggers, custom domain |

| Plus | $295 | \~A$413 | 20+ | \~$75 (\~1,350 AI conversations) | Ticketing, 100+ integrations, white labelling, advanced analytics |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom | Dedicated onboarding, custom SLAs |

Additional seats cost US$10/month (\~A$14.00) each across all paid plans.

**Annual billing** is available — you switch to yearly payment from the Plans page inside the app once you have subscribed. Crisp's pricing page confirms the yearly option but does not publish the size of the annual discount, so budget on the monthly rate and treat any saving as a bonus to confirm at checkout.

**GST treatment:** Crisp's pricing page states that "VAT is not included in our plan prices" and, crucially for Australians, that for customers outside the EU "we won't charge any VAT, regardless of your business or consumer status." In other words, the listed USD price is what you pay — Crisp does not add Australian GST at checkout. The flip side is that Crisp is a French supplier billing in USD with no stated Australian GST registration, so do not expect a GST-bearing Australian tax invoice. If you need to claim a GST credit, the supply is most likely treated as a GST-free imported service — confirm the treatment with your accountant before you rely on it for your BAS.

**Free tier:** The Free plan is genuinely functional — two agent seats, website chat, shared inbox, and mobile apps with no time limit. It is enough for a solo operator or a two-person team managing a modest volume of chats. You cannot export transcripts or access AI features on the free plan.

**14-day trial:** Every new account unlocks the full feature set for 14 days. No credit card required to start.

## How it works / features

Crisp centres on a shared inbox that pulls conversations from every channel into one view. Your team responds in one place rather than switching between apps.

**Hugo AI agent** is Crisp's flagship AI capability. Hugo reads your knowledge base, answer snippets, website content, and uploaded files (PDFs, CSVs), then handles customer queries autonomously. When it cannot resolve something, it escalates to a human agent. Hugo also classifies conversations by topic, which feeds into analytics.

You can choose which underlying AI model powers Hugo. As of mid-2026, options include models from OpenAI (including GPT-5.1 as the default automatic selection), Anthropic, Google, and Mistral, plus models hosted by Crisp itself. Models vary by cost, quality, speed, and data hosting region — specifically, some models offer EU-only processing, which matters for data residency.

**No-code chatbot builder** lets you map out branching conversation flows, add buttons and pickers, collect form data, and deploy the bot across channels. It is available from the Essentials plan upward.

**AI copilot** provides in-conversation suggestions to human agents — suggested replies, summaries, tone adjustments, grammar correction, and translation. This is the "augmentation" layer alongside Hugo's autonomous layer.

**Knowledge base** is a built-in help centre you build inside Crisp. Hugo indexes it automatically. No separate tool required.

**Omnichannel inbox** consolidates website chat, email, WhatsApp Business, Instagram DM, Facebook Messenger, SMS, Telegram, Line, and Viber. Available from Essentials.

**CRM** stores contact history, tags, and notes. It is not a replacement for a proper CRM such as HubSpot, but it keeps customer context visible inside the support inbox without a separate tool.

**Campaigns** let you send proactive messages — outbound chat or email based on behaviour triggers. Available on higher plans.

## What it does well

**Value density is exceptional.** At US$95/mo (\~A$133), the Essentials plan gives a team of ten a live chat widget, email inbox, chatbot builder, knowledge base, AI agent credits, omnichannel support, and analytics in one subscription. You would pay materially more assembling equivalent functionality from Intercom alone.

**The free plan is honest.** Two seats, website chat, and a shared inbox — for zero cost, indefinitely. Most competitors time-limit their free tiers or cripple them to the point of uselessness. Crisp's free plan is enough to evaluate whether the platform suits you before committing anything.

**Hugo covers the basics well.** Point Hugo at a well-maintained knowledge base and it deflects a meaningful share of repetitive queries — pricing questions, return policies, how-to instructions — without human involvement. The handover to a human agent when Hugo is stuck works cleanly in testing.

**Omnichannel without the enterprise price tag.** WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, email, and website chat in one inbox is a legitimate differentiator at this price. Alternatives that offer this scope typically cost two to three times more.

**Bootstrapped and profitable.** Crisp has grown to 600,000 users without VC money. That matters for continuity — there is no investor forcing a pivot or a fire sale. The product roadmap follows customer revenue, not a Series B covenant.

**MCP integrations for Hugo** allow the AI agent to reach into external systems and take actions, not just answer questions. This is a meaningful step beyond simple FAQ bots.

## Where it falls short

**No Australian data region, and the relay infrastructure goes further afield than you might expect.** Customer conversation data is stored in the Netherlands. Plugin data is stored in Germany. Relay servers — which handle real-time connections — operate from the United States, United Kingdom, and Singapore. For many Australian SMBs this will not be a dealbreaker, but for those handling sensitive customer data (healthcare, finance, legal), this is a genuine issue. Crisp does not plan to add an Australian data region.

**USD billing only, and no Australian tax invoice.** Your card will be charged in US dollars, so exchange-rate movements affect your effective monthly cost. Crisp confirms it does not add VAT (and so no GST) for customers outside the EU — the USD price is the price — but it also issues no GST-bearing Australian tax invoice, since it is a French supplier with no stated AU GST registration. For a business that wants a clean GST credit trail, that is avoidable friction Crisp has not resolved for international markets.

**No AUD pricing or localised support for Australia.** There is no Australian sales contact, no AUD pricing, and no AU-specific documentation. You are not an afterthought — you are simply outside the primary market focus.

**Trustpilot score is sharply lower than G2.** G2 averages 4.5 stars from 179 reviews; Trustpilot sits at 1.9 stars from 35 reviews. The Trustpilot complaints cluster around billing disputes and support responsiveness during problems — not the day-to-day product. This contrast is worth noting: the product is well-liked by active users, but when things go wrong the support experience can be slow and frustrating.

**No live chat on smaller plans — which is ironic.** On Mini and Essentials, Crisp's own customer support for your account comes via ticket, not live chat. A chat platform that doesn't give you live support is a reasonable thing to find annoying.

**Ticketing is thin.** Crisp's ticketing system is basic compared to purpose-built helpdesks. If your business runs a high-volume, structured ticket workflow with SLAs and complex routing, you will hit the ceiling. Zendesk or Freshdesk remain better options for that use case.

**Transcript export and filtering gaps.** Users consistently report that exporting full conversation transcripts is limited, and date-range filtering for conversations is clunky. For a business that needs to audit conversations or report on support performance, this is a real gap.

**AI credits deplete faster than you might expect.** At US$5 of AI credits per month on Mini (\~90 automated conversations), any business with meaningful chat volume will burn through the included credits quickly. Credits are a variable cost on top of the plan fee — budget accordingly.

## Australian fit

| AUD billing | No — USD only |
| GST treatment | No GST/VAT charged outside the EU; no AU tax invoice issued |
| Data residency | Netherlands (messaging), Germany (plugins) — no AU region |
| AU support team | No |

| Privacy Act (AU) alignment | GDPR-oriented — no specific APP compliance documentation |
| AU business context in outputs | No automatic AU context; Hugo is as Australian as you train it to be |

The honest summary: Crisp has no meaningful Australian footprint. The product works in Australia — the chat widget loads, the omnichannel channels connect, Hugo answers questions — but it is not built for Australia. Data sits offshore in Europe, billing is USD, and there is no local support. For many small businesses, this is fine. For any business in a regulated sector or one with Privacy Act obligations around data localisation, it requires careful consideration before signing up.

Australian businesses using Crisp should ensure their privacy policy discloses that customer chat data is processed and stored by a French company on EU-hosted servers. This is a real disclosure obligation, not a theoretical one.

**Australian Fit gate note:** Crisp scores 1/5 on Australian Fit. Regardless of its overall score, the five-star rating requires Australian Fit ≥ 4/5\. The displayed star rating is capped at ★★★. [See our review methodology.](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)

## Bottom line

**If you run a small Australian business with two to ten customer-facing staff and you need live chat, email, and basic chatbot automation in one tool at a low price** — Crisp's Essentials plan (\~A$133/mo) is one of the better value options available. Start with the free trial, train Hugo on your FAQs, and see how much ticket volume it deflects before committing.

**If you handle sensitive customer data — healthcare records, financial information, legal documents, or anything subject to the Privacy Act's cross-border transfer provisions** — Crisp's EU-only data hosting is a genuine compliance question. Get legal advice before you deploy.

**If you need a clean GST trail for your BAS**, note that Crisp charges no GST and issues no Australian tax invoice — the supply is most likely a GST-free imported service. Run the treatment past your accountant rather than assuming.

**If you are a larger SMB with structured ticketing needs, SLA requirements, or a high-volume support operation**, Crisp will feel limiting. Zendesk or Freshdesk will serve you better, at higher cost.

**If the Trustpilot score concerns you** — it should at least prompt you to test the support experience during your free trial. Lodge a support ticket with a real question and see how long it takes. That tells you more than a star average.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Crisp available in Australia?

Yes — the product works here: the chat widget loads, the channels connect, and Hugo answers questions. But it has no meaningful Australian footprint — no AUD billing, no AU data region, no local support team or documentation.

### Does Crisp charge in AUD?

No. Billing is USD only, so exchange-rate moves affect your effective cost. Essentials is US$95/month (about A$133). Crisp adds no GST for customers outside the EU, but it issues no Australian tax invoice either.

### Is there a free plan or free trial?

Both. The Free plan is genuinely functional — two seats, website chat, shared inbox and mobile apps, indefinitely (no AI or transcript export). Every new account also gets a 14-day full-feature trial, no card required.

### Where is my customer data stored?

In Europe. Conversation data sits in the Netherlands and plugin data in Germany, with relay servers in the US, UK and Singapore. There's no Australian data region and Crisp has no plans to add one — a genuine issue for regulated sectors.

### Who is Crisp best for?

A small Australian business with two to ten support staff wanting live chat, email and chatbot automation in one tool at a low price. For high-volume structured ticketing, Zendesk or Freshdesk serve better.
