> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Codacy is a solid, mature automated code-review and security platform that plugs into GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket and now wraps AI-generated code in guardrails. It does the boring work — flagging vulnerabilities, enforcing standards, blocking risky merges — without a human having to nag. But Australian teams pay in US dollars, and on the standard cloud plan your source code is scanned on Codacy's overseas AWS infrastructure with no published Australian region. Self-hosting fixes the residency question but lands you in custom-priced Business territory. Recommended for AU development teams who want automated quality gates and can live with offshore cloud processing — or who have the budget to self-host.

## What it is

Codacy is an automated code-quality and security platform. Think of it as a tireless reviewer that reads every pull request before your team does.

It connects to your Git provider — GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket — and scans each change for code violations, complexity, duplication and maintainability problems. On the security side it hunts for exposed secrets, vulnerable dependencies, SAST vulnerabilities, SQL injection risks and insecure infrastructure-as-code. It also tracks unit-test coverage over time.

The platform supports a broad sweep of programming languages and posts its findings straight onto the pull request. If a change fails your standards, Codacy can block the merge until it's fixed. That "merge gate" is the heart of the product: it turns code quality from a good intention into an enforced rule.

The newer layer is aimed squarely at AI-assisted coding. Codacy's **AI Reviewer** auto-reviews pull requests and suggests fixes. **AI Guardrails** push security checks into the AI coding agents and IDEs developers now use — VS Code, JetBrains and Cursor — so risky code gets caught as it's generated, not weeks later. For teams shipping a lot of AI-written code, that is the genuinely current part of the pitch.

Codacy says it serves more than 15,000 organisations. This is not a startup experiment; it is a settled tool with years behind it.

## Pricing in AUD

Codacy publishes three tiers. All prices are in US dollars, so Australian buyers should add the exchange and budget for GST.

| Plan | USD/developer/month (billed annually) | USD/developer/month (billed monthly) | Approx AUD/month (annual, ex-GST) | What you get |
| --------- | ------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ | --------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Developer | US$0 | US$0 | A$0 | IDE plugin: scan-as-you-type, AI guardrails, 38 languages |
| Team | from US$18 | US$21 | \~A$25 | Up to 30 devs, Git integration, cloud scans, merge gates; free for open source |
| Business | Custom — contact sales | — | — | Unlimited private projects, daily CVE re-scans, DAST, SSO/SAML, self-hosting |

*Re-confirmed on `codacy.com/pricing` in a browser on an Australian connection, 24 September 2026 — no figure has moved. Converted at US$1 = A$1.4045 (Frankfurter/ECB, 18 September 2026), ex-GST per our GST rule. There is a 14-day full-platform trial with no credit card required.*

**Developer — free, US$0 per developer per month.** This is the IDE plugin: real-time feedback, AI guardrails and scan-as-you-type inside VS Code, JetBrains and Cursor. Genuinely useful and genuinely free.

**Team — from US$18 per developer per month billed annually, or US$21 billed monthly.** At roughly 1.40 Australian dollars to the US dollar, that is about **A$25 per developer per month annually, or A$29 monthly**, ex-GST. A GST-registered business quoting its ABN is not charged GST on an imported service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top.

**Business — custom pricing.** You contact sales. This unlocks the serious controls: unlimited private projects, daily CVE re-scans, license scanning, DAST, container-image scanning, custom rules, SSO/SAML, audit logs and a dedicated customer success manager. It is also the tier that opens the door to self-hosting.

There is a 14-day full-platform trial with no credit card required.

The per-developer model is fair and predictable. The catch for Australians is structural, not numerical: you are billed in a foreign currency, so your costs drift with the exchange rate.

## Australian fit

This is where the picture gets honest.

Codacy's standard cloud service runs entirely on Amazon Web Services — Codacy's own AWS infrastructure, where all scans are performed. The company holds SOC 2 Type II certification and states it is GDPR-compliant. Data in transit is encrypted with TLS, and the architecture uses a virtual private cloud with no public IP addresses. That is a respectable security posture.

What it does **not** publish is an Australian data-residency option. The security pages describe the AWS-based cloud and point anyone with specific residency questions to contact Codacy directly. For an Australian business, that matters: on the cloud plan, your source code is uploaded and scanned offshore. For most teams building general commercial software that is an acceptable trade-off. For anyone bound by Australian government, financial-services or health data-handling rules, "offshore, region unspecified" is a conversation you must have before signing.

There is a path around it. Codacy offers a **self-hosted** deployment via a Kubernetes Helm chart, so a Business-tier customer can run the platform inside their own infrastructure — including an Australian AWS region or an on-premise cluster — and keep code in-country. The Docker images are gated behind support credentials, so it is a sales-led, enterprise path, not a download. It works, but it is not the cheap or fast option.

Beyond residency, there is no Australian-specific tailoring: no AUD billing, no local support hours advertised, no AU office. Support is documentation, community and — at Business level — a customer success manager. For a developer tool that is normal, but it is not a tool built with Australia in mind.

## Where it's strong

**It automates the review nobody wants to do.** Codacy catches the security and quality issues a busy team skims past. The merge gate is the standout: substandard code simply cannot get in without a deliberate override.

**The AI-coding guardrails are timely.** With developers shipping AI-generated code daily, having security checks fire inside Cursor and VS Code — at generation time — is exactly the right place to catch problems. This is the feature that keeps Codacy current rather than legacy.

**Broad language and tool coverage.** It supports a wide span of languages and the integrations most Australian teams already use: GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Jira and Slack.

**A real free tier.** The Developer plan is not a crippled demo. A solo Australian developer or a tiny team can get genuine value at zero cost, and the 14-day full trial lets you test the paid platform properly.

**Mature and stable.** Fifteen thousand-plus organisations and a long track record mean you are not betting on a fragile newcomer.

## Where it's weak

**No published Australian data residency on the cloud plan.** This is the central limitation for AU buyers. Code is processed offshore unless you escalate to self-hosting, which means Business-tier custom pricing and your own infrastructure.

**USD billing.** Codacy declares USD in its own pricing data and offers no AUD price and no currency control, so you carry the exchange-rate risk and there is no local figure to quote a client. A GST-registered business supplying its ABN is not charged GST on the import; everyone else should allow about 10%.

**Business pricing is opaque.** The features most regulated Australian organisations need — DAST, license scanning, SSO, audit logs — all sit behind "contact sales." You cannot budget from the website.

**It can be noisy.** Like most static-analysis tools, Codacy can surface false positives. The Business tier adds false-positive detection and custom rules to tame this, but smaller teams on Team will spend time tuning.

**Not a tool for non-developers.** This is squarely an engineering product. It belongs to your dev team, not your operations or marketing people. That is fine — but know who it's for.

## The score

| Criterion | Score | Why |
| --------------------- | --------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Value for Money | 4/5 | Fair per-developer pricing and a genuinely useful free tier. Marked down for USD billing and opaque Business pricing. |
| Ease of Use | 3/5 | Quick to connect to Git, but tuning the rules and managing false positives takes engineering effort. |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | Strong quality, security, coverage and AI-guardrail coverage. DAST and container scanning sit behind the top tier. |
| Australian Fit | 3/5 | Solid SOC 2 and GDPR posture, but no published AU data residency on cloud; self-hosting is enterprise-only. No AUD billing or local support. |
| Reliability & Support | 3/5 | Mature platform, 15,000+ organisations, SOC 2 Type II. Support is docs and community until you reach Business. |
| **Total** | **17/25** | **⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good** |

Australian Fit lands at 3 out of 5, below the four-star gate. Under our methodology, a tool cannot be named a category Top Pick or wear five stars unless it serves Australians strongly on local fit. Codacy's offshore-by-default cloud processing keeps it at four stars overall — a strong result, but short of the top tier for Australian buyers.

## Verdict

Codacy does what it promises. It is a mature, capable, automated code-quality and security platform that takes the tedious, easily-skipped work of code review and makes it relentless. The merge gates enforce standards, the security scanning is broad, and the AI guardrails put checks exactly where modern teams need them — inside the AI coding tools developers now lean on.

For an Australian development team building general commercial software, Codacy is an easy recommendation on the Team plan. Start with the free Developer tier, run the 14-day trial, and see whether the merge gates fit your workflow.

The reservation is residency. If your organisation is bound by Australian rules on where code and data may live — government, financial services, health — the standard cloud plan's offshore processing is a real obstacle, and the fix is the custom-priced, self-hosted Business path. Price that in before you commit.

A strong tool, recommended with that one clear caveat. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good — 17/25.

Update history
- **21 Sep 2026 🇦🇺 Currency verified by browser** — **USD confirmed outright, and the whole ladder still matches.** Read live on an Australian connection at `codacy.com/pricing`: **Developer $0 · Team from $18 per dev/month billed yearly, $21 monthly · Business by quote**, free forever for open source, Team capped at 30 devs. Every figure in this review is correct. The page's structured data declares `priceCurrency: USD` on all four offers, with no `AUD` or `A$` anywhere and no currency control — so this is an explicit negative, not an inferred one. `aud_native: false` set explicitly. One detail added while here: the Team plan now states a ceiling of **100 private repos** (with unlimited lines of code), which this review did not mention. No score change. Source: https://www.codacy.com/pricing · Wayback: capture pending (archive.org unavailable 21 Sep 2026).
- **5 Sep 2026** — Pricing re-verified against the vendor page and a Sources section added (the review previously carried price figures with no citation). Developer free, Team from US$18 annual / US$21 monthly per developer — unchanged. Score held at 17/25.
- **24 Sep 2026** — **Pricing table added; ladder re-confirmed and unmoved; one GST gross-up removed from the prose.** Read on `codacy.com/pricing` in a browser: Developer **US$0**, Team **from US$18** billed annually or **US$21** monthly, Business **custom** — unchanged since the 21 September currency check. The tile was blank only because the ladder lived in prose. **The defect:** the review said *“other buyers add \~10%, which takes the annual figure to roughly* *A$28* *per developer per month”* — A$25 × 1.10\. **Our GST rule says state the GST position in words once, which that sentence already did, not compute a second Australian price for the same plan.** It is the defect removed from 51 pricing tables today, in sentence form, and it survived because it never uses the word *gross-up*. Kept visible per our price-history rule. **No USD price moved and no score changed.** `verified:` set; `reviewed:` untouched.
