- Description: Clearscope's real-time content grading is the best in the SEO content optimisation category. But at ~A$181/month for the entry plan, USD-only billing, and no Australian data residency, it's a tool that earns its keep for serious content teams — not every small business.

> **The verdict:** Clearscope is the most focused, cleanest SEO content optimisation tool on the market. Its real-time content grading — built on Google's NLP API — is genuinely useful, and the Google Docs and WordPress integrations slot into how most Australian content teams already work. The problem is the price: US$129/month (\~A$181) for the entry plan, USD-only billing, no AUD option, GST treatment unconfirmed, and no Australian data residency. For a large content team or an agency churning out dozens of articles a month, this tool pays for itself. For a Melbourne café owner dabbling in blog posts, it does not. Score: 16/25 — Very Good.

## What it is

Clearscope is an SEO content optimisation platform founded in 2016 by Bernard Huang and Kevin Su. The company is headquartered in Austin, Texas, and employs roughly 14 people. It is not an AI writing tool — it does not generate content for you. What it does is tell you, with notable precision, whether the content you have written is likely to rank for a given keyword.

The core mechanic is a content report. You enter a target keyword, and Clearscope analyses the top-ranking pages on Google for that term. It surfaces the NLP terms, entities, and questions those pages have in common — the semantic fingerprint of what Google considers comprehensive coverage of that topic. You then write (or paste in) your content, and the platform grades it in real time from F to A++, updating as you type.

In 2026, Clearscope has leaned into AI search visibility. It now tracks how often your content is cited inside AI-generated answers from ChatGPT and Gemini — called AI Citations and Tracked Prompts. It has also added Topic Explorations, which maps the broader landscape of a subject rather than a single keyword.

The tool is used by Intuit, Adobe, Deloitte, IBM, Shopify, and Condé Nast. That client list tells you something about who Clearscope is built for.

## What it costs in Australia (AUD + GST)

All Clearscope pricing is in USD. There is no AUD billing option and no annual discount published on the pricing page. Clearscope's pricing page carries no tax language at all, so whether GST is added at checkout for Australian customers is not something we can confirm from the vendor's own pages — clarify it with Clearscope before subscribing.

| Plan | USD/month | Approx AUD/month | Tracked Queries | Pages | Topic Explorations/mo | Drafts/mo | Seats |
| ---------- | --------- | ---------------- | --------------- | ------ | --------------------- | --------- | -------------------------------------------- |
| Essentials | US$129 | \~A$181 | 50 | 50 | 20 | 20 | Unlimited |
| Business | US$399 | \~A$559 | 300 | 300 | 50 | 20 | Unlimited (plus a dedicated account manager) |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom |

**Add-ons (Essentials):** \- Extra 100 inventory pages: US$25/mo (\~A$35) - Extra 10 AI drafts: US$50 (\~A$70)

**Add-ons (Business):** \- Extra 100 inventory pages: US$15/mo (\~A$21) - Extra 10 AI drafts: US$20 (\~A$28)

There is no free tier, but as of 28 September 2026 the pricing page advertises a **14-day free trial** on every plan ("Start for free"), which it did not in June. Payment is by credit/debit card or bank transfer. AUD conversion calculated at ×1.40 (approximate rate, September 2026). Whether Australian customers are charged GST on top of these amounts is not stated on the pricing page, so treat the AUD figures as a card-rate conversion before any GST that may apply.

For a 35-year-old Melbourne business owner publishing two or three blog posts a month, US$129/month is a hard sell. At 20 content reports per month on Essentials, that works out to roughly A$10 per article — defensible if those articles drive real revenue, steep if they are exploratory.

## How it works / features

**Content Reports and the Grading System**

You enter a target keyword and Clearscope generates a content report: a list of NLP terms ranked by importance, drawn from Google's NLP API analysis of the top-ranking pages for that query. You paste your draft (or write from scratch) into the Content Editor, and it shows a live content grade, a word count comparison against the competition, and a readability score using the Flesch-Kincaid measure.

The grade runs from F to A++. Reaching A or A+ typically means you have covered the topic semantically as well as the pages currently ranking. This is a more robust signal than keyword density counting — it reflects what Google's own NLP infrastructure considers comprehensive.

**Google Docs and WordPress integrations**

Clearscope's Google Docs add-on embeds the grading sidebar directly into your document — terms, content grade, word count, all updating as you type. The WordPress plugin does the same inside the CMS editor. Microsoft Word also has an integration. These are not cosmetic — they remove the copy-paste friction that makes most SEO tools slow to adopt.

**Topic Explorations**

Rather than optimising one keyword at a time, Topic Explorations maps a subject area: related subtopics, questions people ask, content angles worth covering. This is useful for building a content strategy rather than just optimising individual pieces.

**AI Search Tracking**

Clearscope now tracks whether your pages appear in ChatGPT, Gemini, and other AI-generated answers via Tracked Prompts and AI Citations. You can monitor which prompts your content shows up for and spot gaps. For Australian businesses increasingly being discovered through AI assistants rather than direct Google searches, this is a genuinely forward-looking feature.

**Content Inventory and Monitoring**

The Content Inventory tracks your published pages continuously, alerting you when a page's content grade slips — usually because competitors have updated their content and pulled ahead. Essentials includes 50 inventory pages; Business allows 300.

**Unlimited seats**

All plans include unlimited users. For agencies or content teams with multiple writers, editors, and clients, this is a meaningful advantage over per-seat tools.

## What it does well

**The grading system is the best in the category.** Clearscope's content grades are more reliable and more actionable than competitors because they are built on Google's own NLP infrastructure rather than a proprietary model. When a piece reaches A+, you can be reasonably confident it addresses the semantic breadth of the topic.

**Integrations that actually work.** The Google Docs add-on is polished. Seeing your grade update in real time while you write in Google Docs — the tool most Australian content teams already use — removes the reason to work outside the platform.

**Unlimited seats without the usual per-seat penalty.** A team of five writers and two editors all accessing the same Essentials plan for US$129/month is a legitimate value proposition for small agencies.

**AI search visibility tracking is ahead of most competitors.** Knowing whether your content appears in AI-generated answers is an increasingly important metric as more Australians use ChatGPT or Gemini for research instead of Google. Clearscope's Tracked Prompts feature addresses this directly.

**Clean, focused interface.** Clearscope has resisted the feature creep that makes tools like Semrush feel overwhelming. Every feature is tied to a clear output.

## Where it falls short

**No AI writing.** Clearscope tells you what your content needs to say — it does not help you write it. In 2026, when most competitors have added at least a draft generation layer, this is a notable gap. If you want a tool that both outlines and drafts content, you are looking elsewhere.

**Twenty content reports per month is a tight constraint on Essentials.** A content team publishing daily will hit the ceiling in three weeks. Add-on costs ($50 per extra 10 drafts) escalate fast.

**No free trial means no risk-free testing.** At A$181/month, committing without any trial period is a real ask. Most competitors — Frase, Surfer SEO — offer at least a limited free tier or a trial.

**Topic Explorations are limited on Essentials.** Twenty per month means you can map roughly five to six subject areas before you run out. Strategic content planning at scale needs Business tier.

**Small business relevance is limited.** Clearscope's sweet spot is a dedicated content team publishing weekly. A sole trader or micro-business writing one blog post a fortnight does not have enough volume to justify the cost.

**The terms of service grant Clearscope rights to aggregate and analyse your data** to "improve and enhance the Services." The terms do not explicitly state that customer content is not used to train models. For businesses handling client-sensitive content, this warrants scrutiny.

## Australian fit

Clearscope is a US-based tool with no Australian-specific accommodations. Here is what that means in practice:

**Currency:** Billing is in USD only. Your credit card will be charged in US dollars and will incur a foreign transaction fee from your bank — typically 1–3%. AUD billing is not available. Clearscope's pricing page states no tax treatment for Australian customers, so whether GST is added at checkout is something to confirm with Clearscope directly before subscribing.

**Data residency:** Clearscope's privacy policy states that data "may be stored on third party storage and transmitted through third party networks" but does not name the hosting providers or specify geographic locations. No Australian data region is mentioned. For most content teams, this is manageable risk — you are not putting patient records or financial data through Clearscope. For businesses with stricter data governance requirements, the lack of transparency is a concern.

**Support hours:** Clearscope support operates 7am–6pm CDT (US Central time), Monday to Friday. That is 10pm–9am AEST in summer and 11pm–10am AEST in winter — completely outside Australian business hours. There is no stated Australian support channel. Priority support is included on all plans, but "priority" means faster response within US hours.

**Australian market context:** The content grading and NLP analysis is based on Google's global NLP infrastructure. Results for Australian-specific search queries — particularly those where local intent matters, such as "best accountant Sydney" or "café fit out regulations Victoria" — should be treated as a starting point, not a definitive guide. Clearscope has no Australian SERP-specific tuning. This matters less for topic research and more for granular local keyword work.

**No AUD pricing, no AU data region, no AU support hours.** That is the honest picture.

| Value for Money | 3/5 | US$129/month (\~A$181) with no free trial is steep for small teams. Unlimited seats partially justifies the cost for agencies. Add-ons escalate quickly. |
| Ease of Use | 4/5 | Clean interface. Google Docs and WordPress integrations are polished and genuinely reduce friction. Onboarding is straightforward. |
| Feature Depth | 4/5 | The most rigorous content grading in the category. AI search tracking (Tracked Prompts, AI Citations) is forward-looking. Topic Explorations add strategic depth. No AI writing is the gap. |
| Australian Fit | 2/5 | USD-only billing, unconfirmed GST treatment, no AU data region, support hours entirely outside Australian business hours. Tool works in Australia but offers nothing for Australians specifically. |
| Reliability & Support | 3/5 | Strong uptime reputation. Priority support included on all plans. Support limited to US hours — a practical problem for Australian users. No SLA published publicly. |

★★★★ Very Good (4 stars)

**Australian Fit gate note:** Clearscope scores 2/5 on Australian Fit, falling below the 4/5 threshold required for five stars. The displayed rating is capped at four stars regardless of the raw score. [See our methodology →](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)

## Bottom line

**If you run a content team of three or more people publishing weekly** — you are a content marketing agency, an in-house team at a mid-sized company, or a publisher with real SEO ambitions — Clearscope is the best content optimisation tool available. The grading system is accurate, the integrations are practical, and unlimited seats means everyone on the team can use it without the bill multiplying.

**If you are a sole trader or micro-business publishing one to two posts a month**, the economics do not stack up. You will pay \~A$181 a month for a tool you use a handful of times. Look at Surfer SEO (cheaper entry tier, AI writing included) or Frase (lower cost, content briefs and drafting in one tool).

**If you are running a local-first Australian business** where search intent is strongly geographic — trades, hospitality, professional services targeting a specific city — Clearscope's grading is useful but not tuned for local search nuance. Factor in Semrush or Ahrefs for keyword research alongside Clearscope's optimisation layer.

**If data residency matters for your business** — you are in finance, legal, or health — clarify data storage locations with Clearscope before subscribing. The privacy policy does not provide the certainty you need out of the box.

Update history
- **28 Sep 2026 — verified USD by browser; quotas and trial corrected.** clearscope.io/pricing on an Australian connection: Essentials $129, Business $399, Enterprise custom, add-ons $25/$15 per 100 pages and $50/$20 per 10 drafts — every dollar figure holds, bare dollar sign, no currency label, read as USD. Two things had moved: the page now offers a **14-day free trial** on every tier, where this review said none was mentioned; and the tracked allowance is **50 "Tracked Queries" on Essentials and 300 on Business** (was 20 and 50 "Tracked Topics" — Clearscope has repointed the metric at ChatGPT and Gemini query tracking). Business now lists a dedicated account manager. Table and text corrected. No score change: the price is unchanged, and the trial is a nicety rather than a value shift on a US$129 floor.
- **20 Jun 2026** — First reviewed.
- **24 Sep 2026** — **The AUD column was never grossed up for GST, and every word around it said it was.** The header read *“gross-up; GST unconfirmed”* and the note beneath described a 10% uplift — while the figures themselves are plain conversions at 1.4045\. Checked before changing a word: across the 63 files carrying this wording, **141 rows convert at 1.4045 and none at 1.4045 × 1.10**. **No figure changed here; only the description of them did.** Two things were wrong beyond the arithmetic: *gross-up* names a tax uplift and was being used for a currency conversion, and *GST unconfirmed* is stale — our GST rule settled it on 5 September 2026, and a GST-registered Australian business supplying its ABN is **not charged GST** on an imported digital service. **No USD price moved and no score changed.** `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.
