A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **The verdict:** Character.AI is a consumer entertainment app for chatting with AI characters — fictional personas, historical figures, made-up companions. It is genuinely fun and the free tier is generous. But it is built for roleplay and conversation, not work, and it carries a serious safety history that ended with under-18s being banned from open-ended chat in late 2025\. For a busy Australian wanting an AI to draft an email or research a supplier, this is the wrong tool — use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. As a bit of entertainment for adults, it is fine. Score: 13/25 (⭐⭐⭐ Good).

## What it is

Character.AI is a consumer platform for talking to AI "characters." You pick a character — there are millions, most made by other users — and chat with it the way you would message a friend. The character holds a persona: it might be a fictional detective, a study buddy, a language tutor, a fantasy companion, or a recreation of a public figure.

It is not a general assistant in the Wirecutter sense. Where ChatGPT or Claude are aimed at getting work done, Character.AI is aimed at conversation and roleplay. The pitch on the company's own site is "AI Chat, Reimagined — Your Words. Your World." That tells you the centre of gravity: imagination and play, not productivity.

The company was founded by two former Google engineers, and in August 2024 Google paid a reported US$2.7 billion to license its technology and hire its founders back. The app itself continues to operate independently. It is one of the most-used consumer AI apps in the world by time spent — people stay in it for hours, which is both its strength and the root of its problems.

For an Australian audience, the key thing to understand up front: this is an offshore consumer product. It bills in US dollars, stores data overseas, and has no Australian presence. We score it honestly on that basis below.

## What it costs in Australia (AUD + GST)

There are two tiers: a free plan and a single paid subscription, **c.ai+**.

| Plan | Price (USD) | Approx. AUD ex-GST |
| --------------- | ------------- | ------------------ |
| Free | US$0 | A$0 |
| c.ai+ (monthly) | US$9.99/mo | \~A$14/mo |
| c.ai+ (annual) | \~US$99.99/yr | \~A$140/yr |

AUD figures use our standard basis: USD × 1.40, shown ex-GST. As a digital service supplied to Australian consumers, GST should apply under Australia's "Netflix tax" rules, though the exact line-item treatment on your receipt depends on how the vendor invoices. There is no AUD pricing — you are billed in US dollars, so the final amount on your card moves with the exchange rate and your bank's foreign-transaction fee.

The **free tier is generous**: unlimited messaging with characters, access to all public characters, and a daily allowance of character creation and voice calls. The trade-offs are waiting rooms during peak hours, slower replies, and — new in 2026 — mid-chat ads and a virtual currency ("Charms") that some actions now consume.

**c.ai+** buys priority access during busy periods, faster responses, and early access to features. Over 2025 and 2026 the company has widened the gap between free and paid, adding an image generator and experimental features to the subscription. At roughly A$17 a month, it is cheap by AI-subscription standards — but you are paying for a better entertainment experience, not for work output.

The annual price has been reported at both US$94.99 and US$99.99 by third parties; we have not confirmed the current figure against the vendor's own checkout, so treat the annual number as approximate.

## How it works / features (specific)

The core loop is simple. Open the app or website, browse or search characters, tap one, and start typing. The character replies in its persona and remembers the thread within a conversation.

Concrete features, as of June 2026:

- **Millions of user-made characters.** Most of the catalogue is community-created. You can find a character for almost any scenario — a job-interview practice partner, a Spanish tutor, a Dungeons & Dragons narrator, a fictional friend.
- **Create your own character.** You write a name, greeting, description and example dialogue, and the platform builds a chattable persona. The free tier caps how many you can make per day.
- **Voice calls.** You can speak to characters and hear voice replies, with a daily cap on the free tier.
- **Image generation.** A subscriber image feature ("Imagine") lets you generate pictures, added in March 2026.
- **Scenes, stories and streams.** The platform has pushed beyond raw chat into more structured creative formats — building short videos, stories and streams with characters. This is also where under-18 users were redirected after the chat ban (more below).
- **Memory and persona consistency.** Characters hold their persona reasonably well within a session, which is the whole appeal — it feels like talking to a consistent "someone."

What it does *not* do well is the thing our readers usually want from an AI: reliable, factual, get-it-done output. Characters are tuned for in-character entertainment, not accuracy. A character will happily stay in role rather than give you a straight, sourced answer. It does not connect to your documents, your calendar, or your business tools.

## What it does well

**It is genuinely entertaining.** The conversations feel alive in a way a plain chatbot often does not. For casual fun, creative writing prompts, or low-stakes roleplay, it delivers.

**The free tier is real, not a teaser.** Unlimited messaging on the free plan is unusual and generous. You can get a lot of use without paying.

**It is approachable.** There is nothing to learn. If you can send a text message, you can use Character.AI. That low barrier is a genuine strength for non-technical people.

**Low price to upgrade.** At \~A$17/month, c.ai+ is one of the cheaper AI subscriptions going. For someone who uses it daily for entertainment, that is fair value.

**Breadth of characters.** Whatever niche you are into — language practice, story collaboration, a particular fandom — someone has probably already built a character for it.

## Where it falls short

**It is not built for work.** This is the headline limitation for our audience. Character.AI does not draft your business emails, summarise documents, or research suppliers reliably. Asking it to is using a screwdriver as a hammer.

**Accuracy is not the point — and it shows.** Because characters prioritise staying in persona, factual reliability is weak. Do not trust it for anything that matters. There is no source citation, no grounding in your data, no audit trail.

**A serious safety history.** Character.AI has faced lawsuits and sustained criticism over harm to vulnerable users, including minors. In late October 2025 the company announced it would **ban under-18 users from open-ended chat**, fully in force by 25 November 2025\. During the wind-down, teen chat time was cut to two hours a day and then to zero. Under-18s were redirected to creative formats — videos, stories, streams — rather than companion conversation. The company also rolled out age assurance (an in-house model plus a third-party verifier, Persona) and set up an independent AI Safety Lab. This is a product that had to be forcibly restrained around young people. Parents should read that history before letting any teenager near it.

**Ads and currency on the free tier.** The 2026 free experience now includes mid-chat ads and a "Charms" currency that some actions spend. The free tier is still usable, but it is more cluttered than it was.

**No Australian anything.** No AUD billing, no local data residency, no AU support, no AU-aware outputs. For a publication whose whole premise is Australian fit, that matters.

## Australian fit (data residency, AUD billing, AU presence/support)

This is where Character.AI scores poorly for our readers, and we will not soften it.

- **Billing:** US dollars only. No AUD pricing. Your cost varies with the exchange rate, and a foreign-transaction fee likely applies.
- **Data residency:** The privacy policy states data may be stored in the United States or other countries with differing privacy laws. The platform collects your chat content, created characters and posted images. There is no Australian or onshore storage option, and exact storage regions are not disclosed at country level.
- **Privacy compliance:** The company says it complies with regional laws such as GDPR (EU) and CCPA/CPRA (California). There is no Australian Privacy Act–specific commitment called out. Australians fall under its general international policy.
- **AU presence and support:** None. No Australian office, no local support channel, no AU-timezone help. Support is the standard online help centre.
- **Age and regulatory context (updated 6 September 2026):** The under-18 chat ban was driven largely by US regulatory pressure and litigation — but Australia has since acted directly. In October 2025 the eSafety Commissioner served transparency notices on four companion services, Character.AI among them. Its report, published in March 2026, records that "Character AI introduced age assurance measures for Australian users in early 2026 and has removed the chat function for its under 18s experience" ([eSafety media release](https://www.esafety.gov.au/newsroom/media-releases/esafety-report-shows-ai-companions-are-putting-children-at-risk?ref=theaidirectory.com.au) — [Wayback 28 June 2026](http://web.archive.org/web/20260628110732/https://www.esafety.gov.au/newsroom/media-releases/esafety-report-shows-ai-companions-are-putting-children-at-risk)). Character.AI's own 3 September 2026 [safety update](https://blog.character.ai/continuing-to-build-upon-our-safety-priorities/?ref=theaidirectory.com.au) describes the in-house age-estimation model and a k-ID parental-insights tool, without naming Australia. Practical effect for an Australian adult: expect an age check on sign-up; for a parent: under-18s here get the creative formats, not open-ended companion chat. eSafety also found none of the four providers had robust age verification before the notices, so treat the new checks as a floor, not a guarantee.

On every Australian-fit measure that counts, this is a generic offshore consumer app. That earns an Australian Fit of 2/5.

| Reliability & Support | 1/5 | Weak factual reliability by design, online-only support, and a serious safety track record. |
| **Total** | **13/25** | **⭐⭐⭐ Good** |

⭐⭐⭐ Good (11–15). Note: per our methodology, a five-star rating and any category Top Pick require an Australian Fit of at least 4/5\. Character.AI does not meet that gate and is not in contention for either.

## Bottom line

**For Australian business owners and professionals:** skip it. This is not a work tool. For drafting, research, summarising or anything that touches your business, use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini — all reviewed on this site.

**For adults wanting AI entertainment:** it is a reasonable pick. The free tier is generous, the characters are fun, and c.ai+ at \~A$17/month is cheap if you use it daily for creative chat or roleplay. Just go in clear-eyed: it is for play, not facts.

**For parents and anyone with teenagers in the house:** be cautious. Under-18s are now barred from open-ended chat after a string of safety failures and lawsuits. The fixes came late and under pressure. If a young person in your home is using this, read the company's own safety history first, and treat the age-assurance system as a backstop, not a guarantee.

This is a companion-chat product. Judged as what it is, it is decent. Judged against what our readers usually need an AI to do, it is the wrong tool — and we would rather say so plainly than pretend otherwise.

Update history
- **1 Oct 2026 — re-checked by browser; unresolved, no claims re-verified.** The c.ai+ subscription page redirects to a sign-up wall on an Australian connection, so no price could be read without an account. The table, which rests on a secondary source, is left as reviewed. Score unchanged. Capture: `Dossiers/captures/character-ai-pricing-2026-10-01.txt`.
- **20 Sep 2026 🇦🇺** — Australia's app-store age checks became enforceable on 9 September 2026\. They do not reach this app. The store gate covers only downloads rated R18+, and Character.AI is not rated R18+. The age assurance you meet here is the company's own, added under the October 2025 transparency notices. The other half of the same eSafety codes does apply. Since 9 March 2026, an AI chatbot that can generate sexually explicit, self-harm or high-impact violence material must confirm the user is 18 or older first. eSafety has named those chatbots its first enforcement priority for 2026\. - **6 Sep 2026** — Australian regulatory context updated: eSafety's March 2026 transparency report records age assurance for Australian users (early 2026) and the removal of under-18 open-ended chat, replacing our earlier "rules may tighten" framing. No pricing or score change.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Character.AI worth it for Australian business owners?

No. Character.AI is an entertainment app for chatting with AI characters, not a work tool. It will not draft emails, summarise documents or research suppliers reliably. For work, use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. As entertainment for adults, the free tier is generous and genuinely fun.

### How much does Character.AI cost in Australia?

The free tier gives unlimited messaging with characters. The paid c.ai+ plan is US$9.99 a month — roughly A$14 ex-GST on our standard 1.40 exchange basis. There is no AUD billing, so your card cost moves with the exchange rate plus any foreign-transaction fee.

### Is Character.AI safe for teenagers?

Be cautious. After lawsuits and safety failures, Character.AI banned under-18s from open-ended chat, fully in force by 25 November 2025\. Teens are redirected to creative formats like videos and stories, backed by age assurance. Parents should read the company's safety history first and treat age checks as a backstop.

### Does Character.AI store data in Australia?

No. The privacy policy states data may be stored in the United States or other countries with differing privacy laws. There is no Australian or onshore storage option, and no Australian Privacy Act–specific commitment. The platform collects your chat content, created characters and posted images.

### What score did Character.AI get and why?

Character.AI scored 13/25 — ⭐⭐⭐ Good. Ease of use is strong at 4/5, but Australian Fit is 2/5 and Reliability & Support 1/5: USD-only billing, offshore data, no AU support, and weak factual reliability by design. Its Australian Fit rules it out of five stars or any Top Pick.
