> **Verdict (TL;DR):** Buffer is the most approachable and affordable social media scheduling tool for Australian small businesses. The free plan is genuinely useful. The AI Assistant is included across all tiers but should be understood for what it is: a text refinement and idea-generation add-on, not a sophisticated content engine. If you want reliable scheduling at a fair price, Buffer is hard to beat. If you want AI to drive your content strategy, look elsewhere.

## What Buffer is

Buffer is a social media scheduling and management platform founded in 2010, headquartered in San Francisco, USA. It lets you schedule posts to Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube, Mastodon, Bluesky, and Threads from one dashboard.

It added an AI Assistant in 2023, included across all plans including the free tier. The AI Assistant generates post ideas, repurposes content across platforms, edits tone, and suggests variations. It does not generate images, does not do social listening, and is not the product's primary reason to exist.

Buffer's identity is built on simplicity. The interface is clean, setup takes minutes, and the scheduling workflow is intuitive. It is the right tool for sole traders, small teams, and content creators who want a reliable, low-friction way to maintain a social media presence without hiring a social media manager.

## What it costs in Australia

Buffer pricing is per channel, per month. This makes it cheap to start and scalable to expensive quickly as you add more channels.

**AUD conversions use a USD/AUD rate of approximately 1.40 (September 2026). Figures are ex-GST: a GST-registered business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers add \~10%.**

| Plan | USD/channel/month (monthly) | USD/channel/month (annual) | AUD/channel/month (annual, approx) |
| ---------- | --------------------------- | -------------------------- | ---------------------------------- |
| Free | $0 (3 channels max) | $0 (3 channels max) | $0 |
| Essentials | $6 | $5 (channels 1–10) | \~$7.00 |
| Team | $12 | $10 (channels 1–10) | \~$14.00 |

**Volume discounts apply at 11+ channels:** Essentials drops to $4/channel USD (channels 11–25), $3/channel (26–50), $1/channel (51+). Team is $4/$3/$2 at the same thresholds.

**A practical example for a small Melbourne business:** Managing Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn (3 channels) on Essentials costs $5 USD/month × 3 = $15 USD/month on annual billing, roughly $21 AUD/month — less than a streaming subscription.

**Source:** support.buffer.com/article/595-features-available-on-each-buffer-plan (accessed 26 June 2026), buffer.com/pricing (re-read in a browser 30 September 2026).

Buffer bills in USD. No AUD pricing option. GST treatment depends on your ABN status — check with your accountant. There is no reported GST-inclusive pricing option.

## How it works in practice

Setup is fast. Connect your social accounts, set a posting schedule (specific times or Buffer's suggested optimal windows), and start adding posts. The content queue fills and Buffer handles publishing automatically.

The AI Assistant lives inside the post composer. Click the AI button and you can:

- **Generate ideas** — type a topic and get a list of post concepts you can expand.
- **Repurpose** — paste a blog URL or existing post and ask Buffer to rewrite it for Instagram, LinkedIn, or Twitter.
- **Edit text** — "make this shorter," "adjust the tone to be more direct," "add a call to action."
- **Adjust for platform** — the Assistant can reformat a LinkedIn post for Twitter's character limit.

There is no usage cap on the AI Assistant — you can run as many prompts as you like on any plan, including free.

**What the AI cannot do:** It does not generate images. It does not analyse your competitors. It does not tell you what to post based on your audience data. It does not build a content calendar from scratch. It is a text assistant that helps you write faster, not a strategy engine.

The scheduling interface itself is excellent. A visual content calendar, drag-and-drop rescheduling, queue shuffling, and best-time suggestions are all present and work reliably. Instagram carousels, Reels, TikTok videos, LinkedIn PDFs, and Twitter threads are all supported.

---

## What it does well

**The free plan is the best free tier in social scheduling.** Three channels, 10 scheduled posts each, the full AI Assistant, a community inbox, basic analytics, and 100 saved ideas — all free, forever. For a tradie managing a Facebook Page and Instagram, this is likely all they need.

**Pricing scales rationally.** At $5 USD/channel/month (annual), the cost per channel drops as you add more. A business managing five channels pays $25 USD/month — the same as a single seat of most competitor tools that cap your channel count.

**Platform breadth is excellent.** Buffer supports more publishing destinations than almost any competitor at this price: LinkedIn PDFs, TikTok auto-publishing, Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, YouTube. For Australian content creators who post across multiple networks, this matters.

**The queue and calendar.** The scheduling queue is Buffer's best feature — reliable, fast, and intuitive. If you work in batches (writing a week of content in one sitting), Buffer handles this cleanly.

**The AI Assistant is genuinely useful for repurposing.** Taking a 1,000-word blog post and asking Buffer to extract five LinkedIn post concepts from it is quick and produces usable output. This is the Assistant's strongest use case.

---

## What it doesn't do well

**The AI is a text helper, not an AI content tool.** Competitors like Jasper, Predis.ai, or Flick have AI that can generate full posts with creative direction, image suggestions, and platform-optimised formatting. Buffer's AI Assistant rewrites and edits — it doesn't originate content at the same standard. If you sit down with no ideas and want AI to fill your content calendar, Buffer will underwhelm.

**No image generation.** Buffer's AI produces no visuals. You'll need Canva, Adobe Express, or another design tool for images — then bring them into Buffer. This is a real gap given that visual content outperforms text-only on Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest.

**Analytics are basic on paid plans, absent on free.** The free tier shows only a "sent posts report" — no engagement metrics, no audience growth, no breakdown by post type. Essentials and Team include better analytics, but they remain thin compared to Hootsuite or Sprout Social. There is no social listening whatsoever.

**Single user on Essentials.** The Essentials plan supports only one user. If you need a team to collaborate on content — even just to have a VA draft posts for approval — you need the Team plan, which doubles the per-channel cost.

**No inbox management for all platforms.** Buffer's community inbox handles comments from Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Bluesky, TikTok, Mastodon, and Threads — but not X/Twitter DMs or Instagram DMs. For businesses whose customers message them via these channels, it's incomplete.

**US company, US servers, no AU data residency.** Buffer is a San Francisco company processing data on US infrastructure. There is no Australian data residency option and no ISO 27001 certification prominently disclosed. For regulated Australian businesses handling client social data, check Buffer's privacy policy and DPA directly.

## Australian fit

Buffer works for Australian businesses but is not built with Australia in mind. No AUD pricing, no AU support team, and support is primarily async (email/help centre). The Buffer Help Centre is comprehensive, but live chat is not available.

The platform does support Australian-relevant social channels — particularly Facebook and Instagram, which remain dominant for Australian small business marketing. LinkedIn scheduling with PDF carousel support is relevant for B2B professionals in major cities.

The time zone scheduler lets you set your posting times in AEST/AEDT, which works correctly. The "best time to post" suggestions are not Australia-specific but reflect global engagement patterns, which may not map precisely to Australian audience behaviour.

At the Essentials price point (\~$7.75 AUD/channel/month on annual billing), Buffer represents strong value for money by any measure. The free plan in particular has no meaningful Australian equivalent at this quality.

## Alternatives

- [**Hootsuite**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-hootsuite-australia-2026/) — significantly more expensive (from A$129 a user a month, billed annually) but offers stronger analytics, social listening, and a more capable AI layer (OwlyWriter). Better for businesses with dedicated social media budgets.
- [**Predis.ai**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-predis-ai-australia-2026/) — AI-first social tool with image and caption generation. Better for users who want AI to originate content, not just edit it.
- [**Canva Magic Studio**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/canva-magic-studio-review-australia-2026/) — pairs well with Buffer for visual content creation. Not a scheduler, but Canva's AI generates the visuals Buffer cannot.

---

## Bottom line

Buffer earns its reputation as the easiest, most affordable social media scheduler on the market. For Australian small businesses that want to maintain a consistent social presence without spending big, it is the obvious starting point.

The AI Assistant is a genuine bonus — useful for drafting, repurposing, and refining content — but it is not the reason to choose Buffer over competitors. Choose Buffer for the scheduler and the value. If AI-driven content generation is your primary need, you'll want to supplement it or look at more AI-forward tools.

The free plan alone makes it worth trying. Most small businesses will find they never need to leave it.

Update history
- **30 Sep 2026 — re-verified by browser; prices unchanged, one example on the retired 1.55 basis.** `buffer.com/pricing` on an Australian connection: Essentials $6 and Team $12 per channel a month, $5 and $10 on yearly billing ("save 2 months"); the channel counter at 11 and 26 channels confirms the $4 and $3 volume steps. Every figure in the table holds. Bare `$`, no `A$` or `USD` string anywhere. The Melbourne worked example put US$15 a month at "roughly $23 AUD", which is ×1.55; at the table's own \~1.40 it is about **A$21**. Corrected. `aud_native: false` already set. Score unchanged. - **21 Sep 2026** — **Value for Money corrected 5/5 → 4/5\. Total 16/25 → 15/25, and the band moves with it: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good → ⭐⭐⭐ Good.** Not a vendor change. Pricing was re-verified at `buffer.com/pricing` today and every figure in this review holds: Free with 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel, 100 ideas and the full AI Assistant; Essentials US$5/channel/month; Team US$10/channel/month; 20% off annual; channels 11+ discounted. **The 5/5 was wrong when it was set.** Our framework defines Value for Money as *"Is the price fair? Free tier useful? AUD pricing?"* — Buffer answers the first two superbly and the third not at all, as this review says in its own words: *"Buffer bills in USD. No AUD pricing option."* A band change is an uncomfortable consequence of a one-point correction, and it is the honest one. **Nothing about the product's assessment has changed** — Ease of Use, Feature Depth and Reliability are untouched, and the recommendation stands: start on the free plan, and most small businesses will never need to leave it. Australian Fit 2/5 unchanged, so the Australian Fit gate outcome is unchanged. Source: https://buffer.com/pricing · Wayback: capture pending (archive.org returning 500/429 since 19 Sep 2026).
