**The gate:** Five stars need 21+ and Australian Fit of at least 4/5.

*Pricing figures updated 6 September 2026: USD prices are converted at the current rate (1 USD ≈ 1.40 AUD, verified 5 September 2026) and shown ex-GST, replacing the retired 1.55 + GST basis. A GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is not charged GST on an imported digital service; other buyers should allow \~10% on top (*[*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/)*).*

> **The verdict:** Bolt.new is one of the fastest ways to go from a sentence to a working web app. You describe what you want, it builds and runs the thing in your browser, and you can deploy it live in a few clicks. For prototypes, MVPs, and "is this idea worth building" experiments, it earns its place. But the token-based pricing is billed in US dollars and burns faster than you expect, the last 30% of any real app still needs a developer, and there is no Australian data residency or local presence. **Very Good for prototyping — but go in with your eyes open on cost and data. Score: 16/25.**

## What it is

Bolt.new, made by US developer-tools company StackBlitz, is an AI full-stack web-app builder. You type a description — "a booking site for my mobile dog-grooming business with a calendar and Stripe payments" — and Bolt writes the code, installs the dependencies, and runs the app live in a preview pane. All of it happens inside your browser tab.

The clever bit underneath is StackBlitz's WebContainer technology: a tiny operating system, written in WebAssembly, that boots a full Node.js development environment inside the browser. There is no remote server spinning up your code. When you ask Bolt to build something, the AI does the writing, but the app itself runs locally in your tab.

You can chat to refine it ("make the header navy, add a contact form"), edit the code directly if you know how, connect a database, add user logins, and then deploy the finished product to the live web. It sits in the same patch as Lovable, v0, and Replit — the "vibe coding" tools that let non-developers build software by describing it.

## What it costs in Australia (AUD + GST)

Bolt bills in **US dollars**, and there is no AUD pricing or local invoicing. Here is the published structure, with an Australian landed-cost estimate using our standard \~1.40 exchange rate ex-GST.

| Plan | Price (USD/mo) | Approx AUD ex-GST | What you get |
| ---------- | ------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Free | US$0 | A$0 | 300K tokens/day, 1M tokens/month, public or private projects, hosting, Bolt branding |
| Pro | US$25/mo (US$18/mo billed yearly) | \~A$35/mo ex-GST (\~A$25 yearly) | From 10M tokens/month, no daily cap, branding removed, custom domain, token rollover |
| Teams | US$30/member/mo (US$27 billed yearly) | \~A$42/member/mo ex-GST (\~A$38 yearly) | Everything in Pro, plus central billing, access management, shared design-system knowledge |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | SSO, audit logs, dedicated account manager, 24/7 support, custom workflows |

A few things matter for an Australian buyer. First, **GST treatment.** Like most US SaaS, Bolt should add 10% GST to Australian consumers; if you supply a valid ABN it can usually be zero-rated, so a registered business may pay closer to the raw USD figure. Confirm this at checkout for your situation. Second, **annual billing** is advertised as saving up to 28% versus monthly. Third — and this is the one to watch — Pro "starts at" 10M tokens; heavier monthly token tiers exist at higher prices, so the A$35 headline is a floor, not a ceiling. The pricing page doesn't list those higher tiers' prices up front — check them at checkout against your expected usage.

The real cost story is tokens, which we cover below.

## How it works / features (specific)

You start with a prompt. Within a minute or so, Bolt has scaffolded an app — typically a modern React or similar JavaScript front end — and it is running in the preview. From there:

- **Chat to iterate.** Plain-English instructions change the app. "Add a pricing page with three tiers" produces a pricing page.
- **Edit the code.** A full file tree and editor are right there. You can hand-edit anything, which matters when the AI gets something subtly wrong.
- **Add a backend.** Bolt connects to Supabase for databases, authentication, and user management. It can create tables and wire up auth flows for you. Bolt Cloud also offers its own hosting, databases, and custom domains.
- **Bring in designs.** You can import from Figma or pull a repo from GitHub as a starting point.
- **Deploy.** One-click publishing to Netlify (and other hosts), so your app gets a live URL.
- **Payments.** It can scaffold a Stripe checkout flow, though you supply the keys and test it yourself.

The free tier gives you 300,000 tokens a day and one million a month. Tokens are consumed by the AI as it reads and writes your code — a single complex feature request can chew through a surprising amount, because Bolt re-reads the existing code each time. Paid plans start at 10M tokens a month and let unused tokens roll over for one extra month.

## What it does well

**Speed from zero is the headline, and it is real.** A non-technical Melbourne business owner can have a working, clickable web app in front of them inside ten minutes. That is genuinely useful for testing an idea before paying a developer thousands to build it.

**It is full-stack, not just a pretty front end.** Plenty of AI builders stop at a static landing page. Bolt will stand up a database, user logins, and a deploy pipeline, so what you get is closer to a real application than a mockup.

**You are never locked out of the code.** Because the editor is right there, a developer can take over at any point. You are not trapped in a black box — you can export, edit, or hand the project to someone who knows what they are doing.

**The in-browser architecture is fast and private-by-design for your code.** Your app runs in your tab, not on a shared server, so previews are instant and your running code is not sitting on someone else's machine. (Note: this is about where the *app runs*, not where StackBlitz stores your account data — see Australian fit.)

## Where it falls short

**Tokens run out faster than you think.** This is the most common complaint, and it is fair. Every iteration costs tokens, and debugging loops — where you keep asking Bolt to fix the same stubborn bug — burn them quickly. The free tier is fine for a play; a real project will push you to Pro within a day, and a heavy build can blow past even Pro's allowance.

**The last 30% is the hard 30%.** Bolt gets you most of the way fast, then slows down. Custom server-side logic, business rules, and background jobs often need manual coding. AI-generated code frequently needs a clean-up pass before it is production-grade.

**Production gotchas catch beginners out.** A known issue: environment variables set in Bolt's Secrets panel do not always carry across to the deploy host, so a working preview crashes once live. Database security rules (Supabase RLS) can pass in preview but be misconfigured in production. These are the kinds of problems that stop a non-developer cold.

**Support is community-led.** Help is mainly the docs and a Discord, not a phone line. Fine for hobbyists; thin if a paying client's site goes down on a Friday afternoon.

## Australian fit (data residency, AUD billing, AU presence)

This is where Bolt scores honestly low for our readers.

**Billing is USD-only.** No AUD pricing, no local invoicing. You wear the exchange rate and likely 10% GST on top (zero-rateable with a valid ABN — check at checkout).

**The company is US-based.** StackBlitz is headquartered in the United States. Its privacy policy states that personal information "may be transferred to, processed, and stored in countries outside of your jurisdiction, including the United States." There is **no mention of Australia, Australian privacy law, or any data-residency option.** For EU/UK users it leans on standard contractual clauses; Australians get no equivalent local carve-out.

**No local presence or support.** There is no Australian office, no AU support team, and nothing AU-aware in the product.

One nuance worth crediting: because your app *runs* in your browser via WebContainers, your running code is not executing on a US server during a session. But your **account data, project storage, and any backend you connect (Supabase, hosting) are governed by US and offshore terms.** If you are building something that handles Australian customers' personal information — bookings, payments, health or financial data — you must do your own due diligence on where that data ultimately lands. Bolt does not solve data residency for you.

**Bottom line on AU fit:** usable from Australia, but treat it as an offshore tool. For anything touching regulated or sensitive Australian data, get advice before you build on it.

**⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Good (16–20).**

*Note: under our Australian Fit gate, a tool needs Australian Fit ≥ 4/5 to earn five stars or be named a category Top Pick. Bolt.new sits at 2/5 on local fit, so it is recommended for the right job but is not our category winner. See the* [*Methodology*](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/methodology/) *page.*

## Bottom line

**If you are a founder or small-business owner testing an idea:** Bolt.new is one of the best tools going for turning a sentence into something clickable. Use the free tier, build your prototype, and decide whether the idea has legs before you spend real money. Worth your time.

**If you are a marketer or agency building campaign pages or simple tools:** it works, and the speed is addictive — but budget for Pro and expect to babysit the token meter. Keep a developer on call for the deploy-day gremlins.

**If you are building a real product that handles Australian customer data:** proceed carefully. Use Bolt to prototype, but get proper advice on data residency and security before you put anything live with real personal or financial information on it. The offshore data posture is a genuine consideration, not a footnote.

**If you cannot read code at all and need a set-and-forget website:** a hosted website builder will frustrate you less. Bolt rewards people willing to roll up their sleeves when the AI gets stuck.

Update history
- **28 Sep 2026 — verified USD by browser.** bolt.new/pricing read on an Australian connection: Free $0, Pro $25 a month, Teams $30 per member, Enterprise custom — every figure in the table holds — and the Yearly toggle shows Pro at $18 and Teams at $27 ("save up to 28%"), now added to the table. The page prints a bare dollar sign with no currency label anywhere in the markup; Bolt is StackBlitz, a US company, and we read it as USD. Pro currently bundles "Bolt Forge included until Oct 14". ## Frequently asked questions

### Is Bolt.new worth it for Australian businesses?

Yes, for prototyping. Bolt.new scored 16/25 — Very Good — because it turns a plain-English prompt into a working full-stack web app in minutes. It suits founders and small-business owners testing an idea before paying a developer thousands. Go in with your eyes open on token costs and offshore data, and budget for Pro on any real project.

### How much does Bolt.new cost in Australia?

Bolt.new bills in US dollars only — there is no AUD pricing. The free tier gives 300,000 tokens a day. Pro costs US$25 a month, roughly A$35 ex-GST at our \~1.40 exchange rate. Teams is US$30 per member, about A$42\. GST is usually added at checkout, though a business with a valid ABN may be zero-rated.

### Does Bolt.new store data in Australia?

No. StackBlitz, the US company behind Bolt.new, offers no Australian data-residency option. Its privacy policy allows data to be processed offshore, including in the United States. Your app runs in your browser tab, but account data, project storage and any connected backend sit under US and offshore terms. Get advice before building with sensitive Australian data.

### Who should use Bolt.new — and who shouldn't?

Use it if you are a founder or small-business owner testing an idea, or a marketer building campaign pages — the free tier is enough for a play. Skip it if you cannot read code at all and want a set-and-forget website, or if your product handles regulated Australian customer data without proper advice first.

### What score did Bolt.new get and why?

Bolt.new scored 16/25 — Very Good. It earned 4/5 for ease of use and feature depth: prompt-to-app in minutes, with database, logins and deployment built in. Australian Fit dragged it to 2/5 — USD billing, US headquarters, no local support. Under our Australian Fit gate, that rules it out as a category Top Pick.
