> **Verdict (TL;DR):** beehiiv is the strongest pure-newsletter platform available to Australian creators right now. The free tier is genuinely useful, the paid plans are competitively priced against Substack, and the built-in AI writing assistant earns its keep on long-form newsletters. The gaps are real — data stays offshore, pricing is USD only, and the AI credit limits on paid plans are stingier than they look. For anyone serious about building an email audience in Australia, it's the most capable starting point on the market.

## What beehiiv is

beehiiv is a newsletter platform founded in 2021 by former members of the Morning Brew team. It is built specifically for newsletter creators and publishers — not as an afterthought feature inside a broader marketing suite, but as the whole product.

The platform combines email newsletter delivery, a hosted website, a recommendation network (where newsletters cross-promote each other's subscriber lists), a native ad network, paid subscription tools, and digital product sales. In March 2026, beehiiv also shipped a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, letting users manage their account through AI assistants like Claude or ChatGPT.

The company is US-based and the product is used by Time, Newsweek, TechCrunch, and thousands of independent creators globally.

## What it costs in Australia

All pricing is in USD. There is no AUD billing option. Conversions below use approximately USD 1.00 = AUD 1.40 (excl. GST). GST of 10% may apply to digital subscriptions purchased by Australian businesses depending on your ABN registration and how beehiiv classifies the transaction — check with your accountant.

| Plan | USD/month (billed monthly) | AUD approx. (excl. GST) | Subscriber limit |
| ------------- | -------------------------- | ----------------------- | ---------------- |
| Launch (free) | $0 | $0 | 2,500 |
| Scale | $49 | \~$69 | 100,000 |
| Max | $109 | \~$153 | 100,000 |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom |

Annual billing reduces the Scale plan to approximately $43/month USD (\~$67 AUD excl. GST) and Max to approximately $96/month USD (\~$149 AUD excl. GST).

**The free Launch plan is meaningfully generous.** Up to 2,500 subscribers, unlimited email sends, a hosted newsletter website, custom domain, and 10 AI credits per day. You do not need a credit card to start. The main things missing on free are monetisation features, advanced automations, and AI tools beyond the basic daily limit.

**Note on scale pricing:** the $49/month Scale plan caps at 100,000 subscribers. Pricing for larger lists requires the Enterprise tier at custom rates.

---

## How it works in practice

You sign up, connect a custom domain, and start writing in beehiiv's post editor. The interface is clean and focused — it does not feel like a general-purpose tool awkwardly hosting a newsletter feature.

The AI writing assistant lives inside the editor. On the free plan you get 10 credits per day; Scale gives you 25; Max gives 50\. One credit covers roughly one AI-assisted action: draft a section, rewrite a paragraph, shorten content, or change tone. A credits-per-day cap means if you are writing a long newsletter in one session, you can hit the limit mid-draft.

The AI translator lets you convert a newsletter into other languages with a few clicks — useful for creators targeting multilingual Australian audiences. The AI Social Helper (Max and Enterprise only) generates platform-ready social posts from your newsletter content.

Monetisation is where beehiiv differentiates itself sharply from Substack. beehiiv takes 0% of paid subscription revenue — you keep everything minus Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. Substack takes 10%. At $10/month × 500 subscribers, that difference is $500/month in your pocket versus Substack's cut.

The recommendation network lets you grow your list by recommending other beehiiv newsletters to new subscribers, and vice versa. The ad network connects creators with advertisers for sponsored placements. Both require the Scale plan or higher.

In March 2026, beehiiv launched MCP (Model Context Protocol) access. Read access is on the free Launch plan; write access requires Scale. This means you can, in theory, ask Claude or ChatGPT to draft and schedule a newsletter directly — though most creators will find the native editor sufficient.

---

## What it does well

**Purpose-built for newsletters.** Every feature is oriented around publishing and growing an email audience. There is no bloat from unrelated CRM or e-commerce modules.

**The free plan is actually useful.** 2,500 subscribers with unlimited sends and a custom domain is a real working product. Most competitors limit sends or features more aggressively at zero cost.

**Monetisation without the Substack tax.** The 0% revenue take rate means beehiiv is financially superior to Substack for any creator generating meaningful subscription revenue.

**Deliverability focus.** beehiiv is built on top of infrastructure designed specifically for newsletter delivery, and it shows. Open rates reported by creators on beehiiv tend to be high, which matters more than any AI feature for a newsletter business.

**The recommendation network actually works.** Cross-promotion between newsletters is a real growth mechanism, not just a product marketing claim. Australian creators can participate in the global network.

**Solid analytics.** The 3D analytics dashboard (on paid plans) tracks opens, clicks, scroll depth, and subscriber acquisition source in one view. For a creator trying to understand which content drives growth, this is more actionable than most email platform analytics.

---

## What it doesn't do well

**AI credit limits are tight.** 25 credits per day on the $49/month Scale plan sounds reasonable until you spend an afternoon editing a long newsletter. You can exhaust your daily allocation quickly and then wait until midnight (UTC, not AEST) for it to reset. This is a frustrating constraint at the price point.

**USD-only pricing.** Every plan is billed in USD. Australian creators will pay the prevailing AUD/USD exchange rate through their card provider, plus any foreign transaction fees. There is no way to lock in an AUD price.

**Data stored offshore.** beehiiv is headquartered in the US and uses US-based infrastructure (Amazon Web Services). Your subscriber data — names, email addresses, engagement history — lives on servers outside Australia. If your newsletter handles sensitive topics or serves clients in regulated industries, check with a lawyer about Privacy Act obligations for offshore data transfers.

**No native Stripe Australia support for paid subscriptions.** Australian creators running paid subscriptions need a Stripe account, which does support Australia, but the payment processing is Stripe's fee, not beehiiv's. Worth factoring in.

**The Max plan features are not always worth the jump.** The gap from Scale ($49) to Max ($109) is significant. Max's key additions — removing beehiiv branding, dynamic content, and unlimited team seats — matter more to established publishers than early-stage creators. Many will sit on Scale for a long time.

**Limited CRM functionality.** beehiiv is not a CRM. If you need contact tagging, deal tracking, or sales pipeline integration alongside your newsletter, you will need a separate tool. For a small business using the newsletter as the top of a sales funnel, this is a gap.

---

## Australian fit

beehiiv works fine from Australia. The editor, the website builder, the automations — all function without restriction for Australian users.

**The gaps are structural, not functional:**

- **AUD pricing:** None. You pay in USD and absorb the exchange rate.
- **Data residency:** US-based. No Australian or Asia-Pacific server option.
- **GST treatment:** (unconfirmed) — beehiiv does not prominently address GST on its pricing page. If GST applies to your subscription, the AUD cost is higher than the table above.
- **Privacy Act:** If your newsletter collects subscriber data from Australians (which it does), you are the data controller under the Privacy Act 1988\. beehiiv processes that data as a sub-processor offshore. For newsletters with fewer than 3 million in annual turnover, the small business exemption in the Privacy Act may apply — but take advice on your specific situation.
- **Australian content:** No specific Australian market features. The ad network and recommendation network are global and US-heavy.

**Australian Fit score: 2/5.** The tool works here, but it does not serve the Australian market with any tailored features, local pricing, or local data residency.

## Alternatives

- [**Klaviyo**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/review-klaviyo-australia-2026/) — More powerful for e-commerce email, with deeper segmentation and automation. Significantly more expensive. Better for product-based businesses than content creators.
- **Substack** — Simpler, free to start, large built-in discovery network. Takes 10% of subscription revenue, no native AI writing tools, fewer growth features. Worth considering if audience discovery matters more than monetisation efficiency.
- [**HubSpot Breeze**](https://www.theaidirectory.com.au/hubspot-breeze-review-australia-2026/) — Full CRM with email marketing built in. More complex, more expensive, better if you need the newsletter integrated into a broader sales and marketing workflow.

---

## Bottom line

beehiiv is the best purpose-built newsletter platform available to Australian creators. The free plan is a genuine starting point, not a trial. The monetisation model is fairer than Substack's. The AI writing tools are helpful for long-form content, even if the daily credit limits are annoying on the Scale plan.

The offshore data storage is a real consideration if your newsletter audience expects their data to stay in Australia — and for most creators, it will not be a blocker. The USD pricing is a cost you will absorb as a cost of doing business with an overseas platform.

If you are an Australian creator, coach, consultant, or small publisher who wants to own your audience and eventually monetise it via paid subscriptions or sponsorships, beehiiv is the right platform to start on.

Update history
- **24 Sep 2026** — **The grossed-up AUD column removed from the pricing table.** The table carried a second Australian column adding 10% GST to every converted figure, so each plan had two Australian prices and the higher one asserted a tax most of our readers do not pay: a GST-registered Australian business that supplies its ABN is **not charged GST** on an imported digital service. The ex-GST column is unchanged and is the price. Removed, and kept visible here per our price-history rule — the column headed *“AUD approx. (incl. 10% GST estimate)”*: Launch (free) **$0**; Scale **\~$75**; Max **\~$168**. `reviewed:` untouched per our dating rule.
